  • Here's an introduction from initial research to your first nuclear reactor on the rim.
    Mods seen in the video:
    Rimatomics (obviously)
    Stack XXL
    ResearchPal
    Extended Prosthetics and Organ Engineering (EPOE)
    Alpha Animals
    [WD] Expanded floors
    [WD] Reinforced Doors
    More linkables (workbench cabinets)
    Invisible conduits
    Vanilla furniture expanded:
    CORE
    Power
    Concrete Walls
    Utility Columns
    There are more but those are the main ones visible in the video. Happy to answer any questions in the comments. Sorry if the video is a bit haphazard, I tried to get through it as fast as possible and I've cringed at my humour.

    Interesting fact...SCRAM stands for Single Control Rod Axe Man. It goes back to the first US reactor which had a single control rod suspended by a rope and pulley. The rod was moved up and down via the rope and if something went horribly wrong, a researcher was to grab a nearby axe, chop the rope and drop the control rod into the reactor to shut it down. No joke.

    Radiators do have one other advantage, they can be built indoors, meaning they work well for overhead mountain bases. Sometimes you could use water cooling for this, but not easily.

    • @satafly2917
      @satafly2917  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While true, this strategy absolutely necessitates a bait room for infestations. You don't want your cooling system to get destroyed by a huge hive. Water does work well if you pick the right cell - I've picked mountainous river cells to set up in with one catastrophic result. For these reasons (and the ones mentioned in the video), I don't recommend using radiators unless you have chosen a cell that restricts the better options.
      As always though: it's your game. You have every right to play it however you want, including unnecessary difficulty. Thanks for watching by the way :)

      I noticed it would happen sometimes, usually when there was only one fuel rod available to haul and it was prioritised by someone else. Try pausing the game, clicking the fuel rods and disallowing them; unpause the game and let it play for one second, then repause; select your nuclear-assigned pawn and order them to haul the fuel rod directly.
      They should haul the fuel rod to storage, then immediately pick it back up and begin loading the reactor. Once that happens, in my experience at least, things start to work a bit more normally.

      Fuel rods (Rimworld and real life) aren't really radioactive until they've been excited with neutrons in a reactor. They're primed for a chain reaction but until they're inserted, they're harmless.
      Once they've been activated though, they will react for millions of years. So they're dangerous to handle once they've been injected (again, for both Rimworld and real life)

    She "Shit cooler" is an option to use when no other option is awailable.
    The tower needs to be placed outdoors, and water cooler needs to be placed on water.
    Ice sheet map would probably favour cooling towers and it has plenty of outdoors.
    Dense Mountain map however migh not be as generous. Most likely you will end up with your tower being outside your main defences, and thus voulnerable to raids. And you don't want to lose your rector cooling in the middle of the raid. So using those bad coolers that can be better defended is your option.
    And there is a concept of powering your SOS ship with rimatomics reactor. There is not too many options for cooling with water or outdoors there as well.

    • @satafly2917
      @satafly2917  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use cooling towers in Save Our Ship 2 by placing 4 large hardpoints in a square formation. That is exact same footprint as a cooling tower and it counts as outside, but still attached to the ship.

    • @pavelZhd
      @pavelZhd 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@satafly2917 Well... While technically this might be true (didn't try it) to me this sounds like a nonrealistic exploit based on mods not taking each other into account.
      Basicallu outside the ship os not "Outdoors". It is "Vacuum", and same as SOS heatsinks are not able to disperse heat while being in vacuum, I see no way how a cooling tower should be able to.

    • @satafly2917
      @satafly2917  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pavelZhd the cooling towers simply require "unroofed" hence it working.
      As for whether they'd actually work: cooling towers use evaporative cooling via steam. Which means if you supplied the water then they'd work anywhere, even in a vacuum (although they would probably need to be modified).
      Although that water demand is what makes the rimatomics towers unrealistic, because they absolutely need a body of water to function. That said, Dubwise made the right choice in his design, because game mechanics are more important than realism imo

    • @pavelZhd
      @pavelZhd 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@satafly2917
      Point one - I do aggree that sound game mechanics should come before realism in any game / mod design. So no arguing with Dubwise here.
      Point two - I do not have categorical objection to cooling towers actually working with SOS. After all if I find it not to my taste, I can just never build them.
      This being said - point 3. Even though evaporation technically works in vacuum, I still doubt that it would work as cooling in vacuum. The thing is, to act as cooling, matter should require energy to transit from liquid to gaseous state. This way it will capture energy from heat to enact this transfer. In low pressure, evaporation does not require much energy. So the only way you can get rid of heat here is to do basically what SOS emergency heat dumps do - vent a lot of material outside. And if you do this, you are prone to quickly running out of material to dump.
      ((PS: And actually evaporation is not the only thing at work in the cooling tower. Basically once evaporated, the wator will mix with the air, transfering heat into the air. Doing this some water turns back into liquid and rains back to be used for cooling again. Hot air then rises out of the top of the tower, and through the gaps at the bottom fresh air is sucked it. This is why you need a tower with this shape to act as cooling tower.))

    is there a way to use rimatomics without a water source?

    • @satafly2917
      @satafly2917  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah ofc! You only need a water source to use the water cooling system. You don't need it for the cooling tower or radiator.
      Which, strictly speaking, isn't realistic at all. But it's a good gameplay mechanic that allows players more versatility in map choice when using the mod.

    hello i resarc the liberator but how can ı make plutonium?

    • @satafly2917
      @satafly2917  ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll need to make a fuel refinery and insert spent fuel rods into it.
      The advanced reactors churn through fuel much faster and (from memory) generate rods with a much better plutonium yield.

    Researchpal bad. Adds load time to your game. Better to use dubs mint menu’s research window. Doesn’t need to use load time to organize the mod menu and it allows you to sort and search easily.

    ...I hate nuclear energy. Well trying to learn and understand it and plan it out, actual nuclear energy is great who doesn't want 100K volts shooting through to colony when you have 2 dozen mech chargers and a bio-sculptor for every colonist.
