I bet a face mask will act as a sort of pop filter, which could make the lavalier (especially more inexpensive ones) sound better by taking down the wind noise/t's/p's. So the lav is a great option for in-class teaching, especially since it allows you to move around the room unlike a standalone mic, which would root you to the desk. The lav mic is also probably a better option in the mask-wearing scenario than, say, a headset with a mic arm, which could hit the mask and in general cause weird interference due to its close proximity to the mask. But for at home "studio" recordings (where I suppose you aren't wearing a mask anyways), the standalone mic is king!
I'm facing a similar hybrid situation next week - my class is very discussion-based and I'm concerned that the personal lav mic I'm feeding into my laptop for the Zoom students won't be sensitive enough to pick up in-class students' questions & comments from 30 feet away. My strategy is to use a second lav mic (I'm limited to the gear I already own and don't have the resources for a proper room mic) placed near the front of the class with both mics feeding into a splitter into a Zoom H1 (for an independent audio recording) into the laptop. It's a little Frankenstein-esque, but I have high hopes.

Alternatives for zoom meetings on laptop: 1. For office calls, in Headset type, Jabra Evolve2 40 (~$140) works well. The mic cuts out ambient noise pretty well (including ur kids yelling in the same room). Cheaper alternative with mic noise reduction feature: Logitech H340 headset. 2. Combo of 'Airpods + Lavalier mic': For those who already own airpods.. if not satisfied wt the airpods microphone (muffled sound), club them wt Rode Lavalier/collar mic connected to 3.5mm jack on laptop with airpods connected to same laptop via bluetooth. Within zoom settings, select airpods as speakers and Rode mic as microphone.
2 years later i just came back to this to say i hope you come back to making content. You've inspired me to make my own content as well. This video was so helpful when my company went full remote and i needed to get better audio.

Ahh that's where the three or four ring 3.5mm jack matter, mic is typically the fourth ring but that usually connects to ground in three ring normal jack's 👌 Great videos, very informative. I'm just starting out myself so I really appreciate your content 👏👏👍

First of all, thank you for joining the TH-cam community. You are a delightful addition to the usual collection of techies that post about TH-cam production. I like that your point of view is more from a cinematography point of view than a gamer point of view, I was wondering how you were such a natural when this is your first post, but I see from your background that you have probably the ideal background to be doing these kind of videos - teaching and film. Good luck and please make more videos, especially on the budget end for teachers trying to keep students interested in the screen after all this time in lockdown. As for the lavalier mic, I picked up one that had an adapter that I found out I needed to use on my desktop computer, but it was included fortunately. I'm lucky I didn't toss it. Always check the packaging for extra cables, lol. Sorry, I don't have a link, I must have picked it up at a sale or maybe when Radio Shack went under. Anyway, you've inspired me to do a video for my own use to see which mic works best for my Teams meetings. Good luck and I like the bloopers at the end. It's always nice to see someone who isn't afraid to show what's behind the curtain.

Hey Julie, I cannot express how much I like this video of yours. I actually went ahead and ordered the mic Podcasting mic. It's affordable and seem to capture voice really well. I like how you get straight to the point and do different mic tests right away. No long intro, no exaggerating, no flashy images. Before watching your video, I actually looked at a bunch of other videos and really hate that most of them took so long to talk about the quality of the mic.
I was also having similar problem using lav mic on laptops. Later someone told me the jack plug is a hint; When you look at the jack plug on the mic, if there are 3 black rings on it, it is an audio + microphone device, just like those regular 3.5mm hands free earphone we use on smartphone. If there are only two black rings on the jack plug, it would be either an audio only or microphone only device. That may explain why there was the problem when it works with some laptops cuz the on-board system may only supports a combo jack (with sound and voice combined and there is a tiny headset icon next to the port) while the lav mic has no sound output to listen to. A simple fix is to use an external USB sound card for this combo jack, which diverts the signal to audio out (green color port) and microphone (pink color port) Alternatively, use a Bluetooth earbud and choose the speaker output when using Zoom, and choose the on-board audio port output as microphone separately. That looks a bit awkward but it gets the job done at the very least LOL Btw. cant tell this is your first video! You sound and look professional! Keep it going plz!
Hi Hoko! Oh, that makes a lot of sense. So the "headset" jack on my computer didn't know what to do with a lav mic that has no sound output. I didn't know you could get an external USB sound card - great solution. Thanks so much, and for the nice comment and encouragement too! 😊 Always appreciated!
This may very well have appeared below, given the number of comments. I’ve had similar issues with lab mics interfacing with computers in general. A cheap workaround is to use a USB audio dongle, which you can find for under $10. I’ve had very good results with these on many different laptops using many different mics.
Thanks so much Steven! It was a dongle problem lol. Needed a TRSS to TRS adapter. The Bose headset still wouldn't work but at least now my lav is happy!

just wanted to come by and add another comment. So i've used the Uhuru UM900 mic off amazon for the past 2 months now, it's been really really good. I've used it as a beginner streamer as well as at work and i've gotten quite good feedback from the listeners.
The problems you are having with " playing nice" is a cable issue TRRS and TRS, think what works on and IPhone won't work on and Android/Laptop, adaptors are available. I use Rode and Sennheiser.

Wow, again, I say, "Bravo!!!" Most people don't pay attention to the sound of a video, but, while people can put up with fuzzy focus, the audio is an instant click to choose something else. I have done these videos with headsets, and then I go the Blue snowball microphone. Such a difference. Julie, I appreciate the work and research that you put into each video. Again...BRAVO!

I would really recommend the Hyperx Quadcast for online meetings. So nice quality sound with different mic characteristics, touch mute button top of the mic. The mic is lit red when it's active, and it has a jack output for your favorite headset. In Scandinavia we have a hardware store called Biltema and they have a small clip on mic like the one you used on your chest. It cost approximately $3. Dead silent and one of the best I've have tested! Crazy value for the buck! 😊

Hi Julie, I wanted to mention the latest challenge I have experienced on the work from home communications front. My excellent USB condenser microphone was very sensitive and picked up tons of background sound (mostly kids and pets related). During conference calls, I was extremely nervous that my clients or co-workers will hear all the craziness at home. I got a USB headset with a noise-canceling boom microphone. Wow-what a difference, now I can confidently speak on video or voice calls without worrying about external sounds entering the call. The model I got was the "Logitech Zone Wired Noise Cancelling Headset, Certified for Microsoft Teams with Advanced Noise-canceling mic Technology for Open Office environments, USB-C with USB-A Adapter". The Blue Yeti or the Snowball USB mic are great options as they can be plugged into your PC or Laptop and both come with a mic shield and arm aswell. Also using Audacity which is a free audio software can help with audio recording. This was an excellent first TH-cam video. Great video!

Fantastic information here. A point to add is get a usb microphone with a gain dial and a 3.5 mm output for self monitoring. Amazon basics mics act as a usb sound card when plugged in to laptop or iPhone and you could here yourself and the others out of your headphone. Regarding Lav mics and laptops. It comes down to TRS vs TRRS , totally not worth the hassle go with a usb microphone option. Hey have not seen any recent videos . Keep it up... I am commenting on something you posted months ago as it’s relevant to my needs today. Cheers!

Those who are curious, there is a similar microphone by neewer that can be connected through an xlr through 3.5 audio input. that sounds really good for the price, i have been using that for years now and still going strong. I believe it uses the same diaphragm as the mic shown in this video. I chose this because I would like to eventually get an audio interface, and based on my research of products it has more flexibility and adaptability compared to a USB microphone.
Congrats on your first video. It was a delight to watch. About microphones not working on your laptop (and sorry if this was already mentioned), try using a headphone microphone splitter. I find that the mic, even being a trrs port doesn't register as a microphone in some laptops. Best wishes for you and your TH-cam channel.

The splitter would be if I had two jacks right (one for a mic and one for headphones) or are you saying that this would help with the dual port too? I've since found a TRSS to TRS cable that works for my lavalier (but not for the Bose headphones...nothing has helped those lol - I think it's a unique problem to that headset).
@@JulieSchiro Hi Julie, I meant a y-splitter cable that takes a single headset port (trrs) from the laptop and splits it into two separate ports (trs), one for headphones and one for microphone. Then try plugging the microphone into the microphone end of the y-splitter. (You may still need the trrs/trs adapter). I had to do that with one of my microphones and it worked afterwards.
I have been using a pair of Bose on ear wireless headphones and an antlion wireless mic, probably the best combination for portability and sound quality

The lavalier.. Also have the same one. When you plug it in you need to choose that you plugged in a headset and then the microphone works. Just need to choose your speakers in the options then, that worked for me and I love it for that price 😊

Just to let you know the plug for headphone with mic (phone headphones) have 4 poles instead of 3. Thats why you cant just plug them directly into a computer or a laptop. You need a headphone splitter (to split the signal into 2 outputs: Mic and sound) I hope that could help.

Your channel has grown so much for a 4-video channel. they are very professional and useful though which is weird why you stopped posting. BTW, you can use your earphones with the laptop, you need to fix some setting or might need an adapter to split the mic and line out. you should also create affiliate amazon account. good luck.
when you talked about being close so that it sounds the best and doesn't get quieter (at 7:07). You could always add some compression in post for if u ever do need to move around and talk at the same time.

Ahh that's where the three or four ring 3.5mm jack matter, mic is typically the fourth ring but that usually connects to ground in three ring normal jack's 👌 Great videos, very informative. I'm just starting out myself so I really appreciate your content 👏👏👍

First of all, thank you for joining the TH-cam community. You are a delightful addition to the usual collection of techies that post about TH-cam production. I like that your point of view is more from a cinematography point of view than a gamer point of view, I was wondering how you were such a natural when this is your first post, but I see from your background that you have probably the ideal background to be doing these kind of videos - teaching and film. Good luck and please make more videos, especially on the budget end for teachers trying to keep students interested in the screen after all this time in lockdown.
As for the lavalier mic, I picked up one that had an adapter that I found out I needed to use on my desktop computer, but it was included fortunately. I'm lucky I didn't toss it. Always check the packaging for extra cables, lol. Sorry, I don't have a link, I must have picked it up at a sale or maybe when Radio Shack went under. Anyway, you've inspired me to do a video for my own use to see which mic works best for my Teams meetings.
Good luck and I like the bloopers at the end. It's always nice to see someone who isn't afraid to show what's behind the curtain.

Hey Julie, I cannot express how much I like this video of yours. I actually went ahead and ordered the mic Podcasting mic. It's affordable and seem to capture voice really well.
I like how you get straight to the point and do different mic tests right away. No long intro, no exaggerating, no flashy images. Before watching your video, I actually looked at a bunch of other videos and really hate that most of them took so long to talk about the quality of the mic.

I was also having similar problem using lav mic on laptops.
Later someone told me the jack plug is a hint;
When you look at the jack plug on the mic, if there are 3 black rings on it, it is an audio + microphone device, just like those regular 3.5mm hands free earphone we use on smartphone.
If there are only two black rings on the jack plug, it would be either an audio only or microphone only device.
That may explain why there was the problem when it works with some laptops cuz the on-board system may only supports a combo jack (with sound and voice combined and there is a tiny headset icon next to the port) while the lav mic has no sound output to listen to.
A simple fix is to use an external USB sound card for this combo jack, which diverts the signal to audio out (green color port) and microphone (pink color port) Alternatively, use a Bluetooth earbud and choose the speaker output when using Zoom, and choose the on-board audio port output as microphone separately.
That looks a bit awkward but it gets the job done at the very least LOL

Hi Hoko! Oh, that makes a lot of sense. So the "headset" jack on my computer didn't know what to do with a lav mic that has no sound output. I didn't know you could get an external USB sound card - great solution. Thanks so much, and for the nice comment and encouragement too! 😊 Always appreciated!
This may very well have appeared below, given the number of comments. I’ve had similar issues with lab mics interfacing with computers in general. A cheap workaround is to use a USB audio dongle, which you can find for under $10. I’ve had very good results with these on many different laptops using many different mics.
Thanks so much Steven! It was a dongle problem lol. Needed a TRSS to TRS adapter. The Bose headset still wouldn't work but at least now my lav is happy!

The problems you are having with " playing nice" is a cable issue TRRS and TRS, think what works on and IPhone won't work on and Android/Laptop, adaptors are available. I use Rode and Sennheiser.

Wow, again, I say, "Bravo!!!" Most people don't pay attention to the sound of a video, but, while people can put up with fuzzy focus, the audio is an instant click to choose something else. I would really recommend the Hyperx Quadcast for online meetings. So nice quality sound with different mic characteristics, touch mute button top of the mic. The mic is lit red when it's active, and it has a jack output for your favorite headset. In Scandinavia we have a hardware store called Biltema and they have a small clip on mic like the one you used on your chest. It cost approximately $3. Dead silent and one of the best I've have tested! Crazy value for the buck! 😊

Hi Julie, I wanted to mention the latest challenge I have experienced on the work from home communications front. My excellent USB condenser microphone was very sensitive and picked up tons of background sound (mostly kids and pets related). During conference calls, I was extremely nervous that my clients or co-workers will hear all the craziness at home. I got a USB headset with a noise-canceling boom microphone. Wow-what a difference, now I can confidently speak on video or voice calls without worrying about external sounds entering the call. The model I got was the "Logitech Zone Wired Noise Cancelling Headset, Certified for Microsoft Teams with Advanced Noise-canceling mic Technology for Open Office environments, USB-C with USB-A Adapter".

The Blue Yeti or the Snowball USB mic are great options as they can be plugged into your PC or Laptop and both come with a mic shield and arm aswell. Also using Audacity which is a free audio software can help with audio recording. This was an excellent first TH-cam video. Great video!

Fantastic information here. A point to add is get a usb microphone with a gain dial and a 3.5 mm output for self monitoring. Amazon basics mics act as a usb sound card when plugged in to laptop or iPhone and you could here yourself and the others out of your headphone.
Regarding Lav mics and laptops. It comes down to TRS vs TRRS , totally not worth the hassle go with a usb microphone option.

Those who are curious, there is a similar microphone by neewer that can be connected through an xlr through 3.5 audio input. that sounds really good for the price, i have been using that for years now and still going strong.
I believe it uses the same diaphragm as the mic shown in this video. I chose this because I would like to eventually get an audio interface, and based on my research of products it has more flexibility and adaptability compared to a USB microphone.

Congrats on your first video. It was a delight to watch. About microphones not working on your laptop (and sorry if this was already mentioned), try using a headphone microphone splitter. I find that the mic, even being a trrs port doesn't register as a microphone in some laptops. Best wishes for you and your TH-cam channel.

The splitter would be if I had two jacks right (one for a mic and one for headphones) or are you saying that this would help with the dual port too? I've since found a TRSS to TRS cable that works for my lavalier (but not for the Bose headphones...nothing has helped those lol - I think it's a unique problem to that headset).
@@JulieSchiro Hi Julie, I meant a y-splitter cable that takes a single headset port (trrs) from the laptop and splits it into two separate ports (trs), one for headphones and one for microphone. Then try plugging the microphone into the microphone end of the y-splitter. (You may still need the trrs/trs adapter). I had to do that with one of my microphones and it worked afterwards.

I have been using a pair of Bose on ear wireless headphones and an antlion wireless mic, probably the best combination for portability and sound quality

Any passive mic (lav mic) that works for a combo jack (like your phone) will need a TRRS to TRS adapter to work in a mic only plug.

Good video. I spent ages looking for a good work headset and was amazed at how bad 99% of the equipment out there is for voice calls etc.

The lavalier.. Also have the same one. When you plug it in you need to choose that you plugged in a headset and then the microphone works. Just need to choose your speakers in the options then, that worked for me and I love it for that price 😊

Just to let you know the plug for headphone with mic (phone headphones) have 4 poles instead of 3. Thats why you cant just plug them directly into a computer or a laptop. You need a headphone splitter (to split the signal into 2 outputs: Mic and sound) I hope that could help.
and also you can use Nvidia Broadcast to use AI to remove background noise

when you talked about being close so that it sounds the best and doesn't get quieter (at 7:07). You could always add some compression in post for if u ever do need to move around and talk at the same time.

Oh yeah, if nobody mentioned it below already; the word that you're looking for when speaking about using a "pop filter or pop screen" for when you say P's and S's is called "Plosives" in voice over(V.O.) world.
