    Wish I could have seen this before I bought my first few mics, as a person who hates asking stupid questions and does not trust salesman in shops. Great Summary. Never understood why headphones and lav mics did not come with easy break away connectors, for when you forget and start to walk away.

    Thanks. As a beginner I've started with a cheap wired lav, a PurplePanda. I'm super happy with my purchase and dramatic quality improvement over the internal iphone12pm mics.

    Con lav mic - easily forgotten resulting in you treating your audience and/or sound crew to the sounds of your bathroom ablutions or perhaps what you really think about the show host.

    The NTG3 is a pretty expensive starter option. I'd go with the Videomic NTG. It works extremely well as a boom mic and is very cost effective with a nice balanced sound. The thing which turns me away from Rode is that it tends to take over all the sound on one's machine which, for a blind person, is not a good thing - and Road Central is not accessibly designed.

  • @NSA.Monitored.Device
    @NSA.Monitored.Device ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well, moved to a Rode NTG-2 (used) for testing and more than satisfied - still knowing there's much room for improvement and looking for alternatives. Main reason to move to a shotgun was also that "standard" mics look plain stupid when you are filming yourself and take too much room in the frame. Also, as said, if you are dealing with a very active person in front of the mic and you have no possibility to adjust it all the time, the sound quality drops all the time - super annoying.
    Still having that problem with the NTG-2, but like 85 % less. The streamer really has to move out of the "target zone" or put something directly in front of the mic to cause issues.

  • @MartinKoss
    @MartinKoss ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Excellent explanation. I have a Rode NT USB, NT1 with AI-1 and a few other random mics but I've been contemplating a shotgun for some purposes (filming clients talking for example without having to have a mic in their face or compromising with a lav mic. Thank you.

  • @BrandtRedd
    @BrandtRedd ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Can you comment on headworn mics? Specifically, I'm looking at the Shure SM35. It sort of falls into the lavalier category except that it's directional (cardioid pattern) so you have to point it at your mouth. More visible than a lavalier but doesn't block as much as a conventional mic.

    • @DarkCornerStudios
      @DarkCornerStudios  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Headworn are good mics, but it is hard to include them. They are prone to plosives if placed improperly...and can be tough to get GREAT quality.
      The sound quality is up there with a basic lav style mic...with a bit more clarity.
      You can end up with a lot of breathing noises...or plosives if you arent careful

    They definitely have a distinct sound, close up mic has a podcast sound, lav has a very dry sound, partially due to the acoustics at the chest location, and the shotgun has that film sound to it. Somehow I think Lavaliers work well for talking head videos, it almost feels right, whereas the shotgun creates a more intimate feeling video.

    Frustrated looking for an XLR lavalier...

    • @BrandtRedd
      @BrandtRedd ปีที่แล้ว

      Take a look at the Shure mics. They make inline preamps that convert from the lav connector (meant for a radio pack) into XLR and amplify the signal at the same time. The preamp requires phantom power, of course. For example, the MX183 is a lavalier mic bundled with the preamp and XLR connector. the WL183 is exactly the same microphone but without the preamp and made to connect to a Shure radio pack. (This is paraphrased from Shure's website).
