      I have recieved my blue yeti today and am hoping to mae a start on doing an anime vocal cover channel and big the big anime cover singer for the UK, but idk which programs are going to be the best ones to start on that I can still implement all the vocal effects that all finalised sings have such as the echo like effect or the voice sounding eletric or compressed. What one do you recomend me that I can still easily learn on and that isn''t too complex?

    As an audio engineer, I can say that all of these tips are spot on except one big tip that was completely wrong: Gain.
    So with gain, you have to understand that the Blue Yeti is a USB mic, meaning that turning the gain down increases the susceptibility to EMF, which sounds like a light hiss. Instead, I recommend turning up the gain to about 75% (not to max because you will peak and that also sounds bad), then turn down the mix volume in Windows. I have my volume in Windows set to about 60, but this may vary depending on your voice volume.
    Think about it this way: Any time you use audio, you want to get the best quality source audio as possible. If you are recording your voice, this means you want to get the best voice source. Turning the gain down reduces the signal strength, and thus the quality, of your source. If you notice a light hiss in your audio that you have to clean up with software, your gain is too low.
    The result is that I have to do almost no post-processing cleanup. I don't know where this "low gain" myth got started, but it makes the average person's mic quality much poorer, especially if they are using the mic to live stream where post-processing isn't an option.

    • @mybestideas1
      @mybestideas1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Thank you very much for this. I kind of wondered about it. I used to keep it on low and people complained about the low volume. I put the gain up and have my windows volume just as you said.
      I still get complaints that the sound is not clear. How close to the mic should I be? I have one of the foams that goes over the Yeti and today I ordered shock mount because i keep it on an extended arm. I use it for video recording so it would be a nightmare separating video and sound to fix the sound.
      Thanks in advance.

      FromZeroToHero - Minecraft! What do u mean by “fix”?

    • @revvilo
      @revvilo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've always wondered, wouldn't doing this introduce clipping?
      My thoughts are that because your mic is a higher volume than windows, the mic picks up a loud sound, it clips because the gain is high, it goes into windows and gets turned down again, but that clipping is still there... is this accurate at all?
      I drew this conclusion when I accidentally had it at extremes of this (as in SUPER high mic gain, but very low windows gain) and noticed distortion even though it was quite a distance away from clipping.

    I do a lot of recording with the blue yeti and my biggest tip is to actually have your gain up to near max (just keep turning it up until you reach any sort of negative tonal qualities or clipping, then dial it back to just before that point) and then changing your windows input volume to about 10-20% range. This changes everything- you'll truly be surprised at how much this helps your overall sound, volume, etc.

    Have been using my blue yeti mic for about 6-7 months now and love it! Picked it up used for $40 CAD and haven't looked back. One issue I struggled with early was an audible hissing noise that can be fixed by turning your mic gain up and reducing the device volume through the Windows sound controls. Great vid and very helpful!!

    Brilliant video, Hazel. Thank you so much!
    I have a cramped space and my solution to the vibration issue was to keep the desk stand. I cut a 6"x6" block of 2.5" thick foam, drew a circle around the stand in the middle of it and then cut out a 1" deep hole for the stand to sit in tightly. Took me 10 minutes with a short, sharp knife and cost nothing, as I already had some foam.. It's very stable and completely damps any vibrations from the desk. It doesn't take up (non-existent) spare floor space for a stand, or risk a boom getting into the video shot. Just an idea.

    • @PamelaHill
      @PamelaHill 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for this! I was wondering if I could do something like this, since I have no room for a large stand. I was thinking of putting foam under it, but you're saying you put the foam around the stand? A picture would be awesome. :)

    I always get weirded out by hearing my own voice on playback. Do you ever get over that?

    • @Hazelnuttygames
      @Hazelnuttygames  7 ปีที่แล้ว +159

      You do! When you hear your own voice normally, it's modified by vibrations through your body. A microphone will show you your voice as other people hear it, which typically you aren't used to. People tend to prefer things that they're exposed to a lot, so that's very natural. After a couple of weeks of working with clips of your own voice every day you'll get way more comfortable with it!

    • @Playingwith3D
      @Playingwith3D 7 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      I suspected you would finally get use to it. I am only use to occasionally talking awkwardly at some friends wedding caught on video, and when I see and hear myself I'm thinking "omg I sound like that to others? I'm never talking again". lol

    • @cujoedaman
      @cujoedaman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Playingwith3D, one trick you can do is to hold two large pieces of paper or file folders on each side of your head in front of your ears. What this does is causes the sound of your voice to bounce around before it reaches your ears giving you a much better idea of what you sound like to others. This way you can kind of self analyze your voice and you can figure out what you don't like about it and change it.
      I notice on videos I tend to talk "through my nose" and so I try to talk from my diaphragm, the same way with singers, they sing from their diaphragm and not the throat. It takes practice because you're used to talking a certain way, but when you become conscience about it, you can stop and say "hey, I sound better if I do this". I've been able to recognize when I'm talking that way and change the way I release my voice.
      It's not a perfect solution, but it does help :D

      if you have the blue yeti you can hear your voice at the same time you talk , that way you can control your voice , when you do not use the mic as a voice card it comes later and it is impossible to talk .

      Late reply, but I think he was asking if you can use it as just a normal mic while you still have the headset plugged in. This is because there are technically two mics connected - The headset microphone and the Blue Yeti. Since I'm already here though I think I might as well tell ya the answer. Yes, you can only record with the Yeti because the Yeti is a USB mic so it records in a separate channel than your headset. You just have to change the settings for recording on your PC.

    Have you ever considered going to school to become an Air Traffic Controller? I am a retired US Military Pilot 26 years Military and 8+ years Civilian. Yes you speak like you had 15 cups of coffee, but with that said here is my professional analysis of your presentation.
    1. You definitely speak fast, understatement
    2. Ok you talk fast but your voice quality is pitch perfect and your dialectic is crystal-clear and pitch perfect
    3. You pronounce your words with a crisp and clear tone, sharp and extremely snappy
    4. Something that drives me absolutely insane are people who use Uh’s, Um’s, So’s over and over again. I had a good friend (another Pilot) who when he was giving a class I would actually count how many Uh’s and Um’s he would say, it was unbelievable what my tally total’s were. It was impossible for me to focus on the topic he was discussing, drove me crazy
    5. When flying into Class B Airspace in large city’s like Los Angeles, Dallas, Memphis (Fed Ex Major Hubs, pilots have to give 100% of their skills to fly and follow the Air Traffic Controller. One missed call could be the difference between being placed 6’ under or going home when my mission was completed, like all pilots we all have missed calls and directions. You would be a joy to follow!!! I understood 100% what you were trying to get across in your video.
    6. You would be an awesome asset to ATC
    7. With that said, I could never be married to anyone it I had to listen to that 24/7/365. That’s not a hit on you, that’s a hit on me. I am a very calm dude, after 6 hours of that I would have to start taking drugs to calm myself down, I would become so friggn wired and wound up. Again that’s my problem not yours
    I would hire you if I owned a popular Radio Station, if I worked for the FAA, I would hire you in a split second for ATC School
    Sorry if there are any typos, I don’t have time to correct plus it’s kind of dark in my room now

      You've got to check out DaVinci Resolve (free, and used by big name studios like Marvel). It has an easy right-click auto-sync by waveform in the Edit app. I can't speak for how it compares to FCP, but it's miles ahead of Adobe Premiere in ease of use (and, again, free).

      Or you can get keyboards that don’t make noise, specifically looking at blue keys. Blue keys are meant to be silent

    Thank you so much for your video. Would you mind showing your steps to cleaning your audio i.e. Treble & Bass Boost, Compressor, Normalizer, and Noise Reduction? What step order do you apply each effect and what are your settings set to. This information would really help as all the tutorials on youtube show the older version of audacity. I just downloaded the latest update and things are a bit different. I'm using Audacity 2.2. Thanks Hazel. I appreciate your help in advance.

    I'm new to voice over work, so this is a huge help! I recently bought the Blue Yeti mic(pop screen and headphones included) and have been intimidated. I did one test that sounded very tinny. I submitted it to a potential customer and they didn't like the sound. I've used Audacity in the past to record radio from the internet, so i'll give it a try for playing with my recordings. Thanks!!

    +1 on the post-processing in audacity. The first time I tried this I went from me-in-my-garden-shed sound to I-now-command-the-airwaves sound. Essential step.

    I like those boom stands better than the scissor arm stands because it's more durable for heavier microphones.

    I enjoyed the video but would like to add something to it and other options :) 1.) Donationware VB-Audio VoiceMeeter Banana software helps a ton with other sounds in the room and it controls all the computer audio settings. I have mine setup for both of my Blackout Blue Yetis on separate inputs so different users can adjust their voice and save the settings for future use. The software has settings to have a noise cutoff so the mic isn't constantly on and will turn back on when a certain amount of volume is reached (Adjustable). 2.) Donationware (gets you 2 more cables) Virtual Audio Cable - VB Audio is also helpful because they are virtual patch cables so you can redirect things all to one place etc. 3.)If you can spend the money ($50 est.) on a pop filter type of device then the Stedman Proscreen 101 is the way to go. The pop filter like the one used in this video only tries to cause a fabric barrier for the words/letters we breath out heavier to pronounce. The Stedman is metal mesh that is shaped to redirect your breath away from the mic instead of being a barrier. The Stedman is also much better looking and much easier to setup because it is a bit smaller diameter wise allowing it to be closer to the Mic especially when your using a Blue Microphones Radius III Custom Shockmount for Yeti/Yeti Pro or aftermarket version. 4.) I suggest Using a Rode PSA1 Swivel Mount Studio Microphone Boom Arm over the Blue version. Extra.) I actually made my own height adjustable floor stands for my 2 mics and matching accessories out of PVC Pipes (4" exterior 3" Interior) and PVC Flanges and a Heil Sound FL-2 Permanent Flange Mount on each to put the swivel end of the Rode Arm into. Safety Note.) When making things out of PVC don't use a sander/sand paper because the dust will get in your lungs and effect your health. In order to cut and modify PVC for this other use I use a small PVC Hand Saw and a large non kitchen knife (I used my K-Bar) that's not going to snap or be hard to handle under a lot of pressure to scrape down the areas I need to make looser for the height adjustment option. But I am preparing to stream from on a couch so table clamping wasn't an option.

    Here's a quick tip if you want to fix a "buzzing" noise in the background of your yeti mic!
    1. Turn your Gain all the way up
    2. Go into your computer settings and reduce the sensitivity of your microphone to about 20-30.
    That's it!
