    We, in the studio have become obsessed with compressors. I remember reading an article that was written by a famous mixing engineer and he said, in the old days, you didnt worry about what type of compressor you had, you just used what was available, didn't matter, 1176 or a radio shack compressor, you just used it. He said that the biggest worry that the engineer had in those days was getting through the sessions without the tape machine breaking down and not what type of compressor you were using..

    This was informative. I tend to use compressors on their respective sources; FET on individual tracks, VCA on busses, and optical sometimes when stacking compression. But I never knew why I subconsciously reached for these compressors for these applications, until now!

      It's fine to experiment, although I'd avoid choosing any tool out of habit or "rules" - because I don't like being lazy and/or getting dull mixes!
      > *LISTEN FIRST and then decide what tool is either **_complimentary_** or **_stacking_** towards the result of what you are after.* <
      I've been at this for 3 decades, and in the end there are only those two ways to go with any processing: stacking or complimenting to achieve the desired result. The rest is indeterminate confusion and second-guessing that is best saved for experimentation., i.e. trial and error (go until you know *that* you know).

      PWM also.
      Digital compression should be a separate class, too - a Weiss or FirComp are nothing like the others.
      Look-ahead is the digital 'game-changer' and is a major difference producing results impossible to get from other comps. Instead we like to pretend that the VST "equivalent" is doing "the same thing" when it is not - it's doing a code-limited digital compression instead.

    There are more than 4 types.
    Diode Bridge and PWM are two. I'd absolutely call digital compressors (whether from Weiss or FirComp) another class as well; it is ridiculous to pretend that the many differences don't matter. In fact, VST compressors really "don't matter" when all they are is code going through the same D/A circuit. The differences in workflow and yes, SOUND are pretty dramatic vs the real hardware that they claim to be emulating.
    The right tool for the job, is all that matters here.

  • @dougleydorite
    @dougleydorite 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Electricity isn’t 1/100’th the speed of light. What you are referring to is frequency being at 60 hz, coming off the line. A lot of instances boost the frequency. Frequency drives on a motor for example. Electronic ballasts in a light commonly change frequencies to 50Khz, which makes electricity way faster than the speed of light (according to your claim)

    • @lewisticknor

      It's the internet, so facts are not important, or pronunciation or how compressors work, or what components are important in a FET. But outside of that, it's a very nice video. Now viewers think they know what is going on, which is the value TH-cam brings us.

    • @dougleydorite
      @dougleydorite ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lewisticknor audio is a strange area of expertise. A kid with a laptop and headphones can make better music and mixes than someone who is experienced, competent, knowledgeable etc… which raises a question in philosophy.
      And all these software companies are trying to make the best pre-set workflow so everyone can sound the same. $$$
