Belgian hermit embraces life of solitude

- Stan Vanuytrecht has taken up his new job as a hermit at a 350-year-old Roman Catholic hermitage in Austria. 58 year old Stan was one of the seventy candidates from around the world who applied for the unpaid position. Saalfelden is one of Europe's last hermitages. the Roman Catholic chapel has been around for 350 years and there is no running water or power in the 431sq ft hut. Vanuytrecht says he's found all he could ever want. But he's not expecting complete seclusion either as many people come up to enjoy views of the surrounding glacier. The hermit says he's prepared for visitors and there is a small chapel for those who wish to confide in him in private.

You think being alone is lonely but when you've been around enough humans to know what loneliness really feels like solitude doesn't seem so bad.
I get what you wrote. I’m usually alone or alone in a room with other people. When I see these videos, being a recluse has it’s appeal. It’s a vicarious fix.
It depends. Those who feel lonely around people will not feel less lonely in seclusion. Seclusion, at least in the Catholic sense, is best done by those who already have gained inner peace with God in Christ. There are dessert fathers who have written about such things. It was mentioned by one for instance that an angry man who tries to become a dessert monk will begin to get angry at the rocks and the sand when no one else is around. The reason he says this is because a lack of inner peace cannot be blamed on externals. It is easier to blame others than to look within at our internal enemies. That being said, I am not claiming that a worldly person could not go to the wilderness and find salvation in seclusion. I am simply saying that a good understanding of the psyche and spiritual warfare is needed to conquer oneself regardless of where he lives.
Exactly. Not everyone is made for a reclusive life. Some need people more than others.

@justfaceit0005 I agree that this is the life of the few but I'm not entirely sure about the 'life not having a meaning' part. Rather we must question, what is the meaning of life? Because there certainly is a meaning as God has placed us in this world. If one comes to the conclusion that living life as most people live it (as active members of society) is meaningless, then for sure, they may wish to follow the path of hermitage or monasticism.

I wonder if he is still there. My uncle was a hermit in a very old chapel near Malmedy in Belgium, he also started with no running water but there was a fresh water source close to the chapel and he used to collect water from it. He translated sacred texts /books. Beautiful memories

Meh… I am a hermit. I got like zero contacts or connections. People think I am completely miserable. Oddly, it is pretty peaceful once I turn on Tokyo city pop. I think people blow the misery of being a hermit out of proportion. It is possible to somewhat enjoy this lifestyle.

A Catholic hermit does not enter solitude out of hatred for people but out of love for people and God. Nor is it a life on your own terms so to speak. It requires poverty, celibacy, and solitude - it is a life of penance and prayer.

@@eugeniovincenzo1621 The Church was strong then but still had problems and it was a lot smaller. Every age of the Church has its own set of problems. You should look up the theory based on Prophecy on the Seven Ages of the Church - alluded to in the seven letters to the Churches in Revelation. If this theory is correct then we are currently nearing the end of the fifth age which is known as the age of apostasy.
We also must remember that the current issues of our time are God's judgement against us in order to try and wake us up. We must remain faithful both when the Church seems strong and weak. God will restore His Church in His own time.This is not an easy age to be Catholic but that also means we have so many more graces available to us.
The Hermit Desert Fathers are still with us because they continue to pray for us in Heaven. And that is one of the most beautiful things about being one of the faithful during these times, is that we have so many Saints and Martyrs in Heaven praying for us whereas the early Church had far less of that. Lets keep strong in the faith and endure to the end.

Breath taking
Living this way is so amazing. There is absolutely no stress from dealing with other people and their demands on your time and energy. You can pursue your own goals and interests with zero distractions. Your mind and imagination develop and you gain a deep amount of wisdom. The flip side is it is very addicting and after prolonged periods of solitude it becomes almost impossible to deal with society and people and all their strange shallow social conventions.

Which I could do that live my life the way I want to live it which is alone and no judgements or rules to live by I would be cut off from the world and not bother with anyone and I could do what I want! Living in isolation doesn't bother me people never liked me and they never wanted me around anyways, and people always hated me and they even said so nobody likes you they hammered this in my head over and over and people in Northern VA these people suck b/c they are backstabbers, lairs, users, abusers and idiots who have no common sense and brains. They always bullied me and hated me and they still do and people always hated me and I would give anything to cut myself off from the world and live this life and do want I wanna do! Nobody would hurt me or yell at me and I would be fine alone! Better than jail or prison if you ask me! Hermits live their life like that for a reason. They probbaly hated people just I hated people! MEAN PEOPLE SUCK!
The nice thing about being a hermit is you have your life on your terms, no boy friend or girlfriend, nobody telling you what to do and for this man I think he seems happy! Happiness is what he wanted and I want this life being hermit and just being alone isn't
bad. Its the people that I don't miss! I don't want to deal with trauma again and having people hate me so much. I am still hated no matter what I do. I am getting out of VA in 2019 and I am going some place else. I dont' care what happens to me. I want to be some place else. Or another world. If its possible to go into another world. My life sucks b/c I am being gang stalked and I am hated so much. I can't wait to be old and dead. That's the ticket out of this world is waiting to die. I hope I die soon.

Feeling lonely from time to time when you're alone is normal. But when you're with some one, may be a spouse, or friends, and you feel lonely, then that is a problem. That's a good sign that you're better off alone. i spend 9-10 blissful months a year alone. Absolutely loving every minute of it. Then 2 months a year I spend with my daughter and wife. That is alright too, but the time alone is very special to me.

Yes, people should learn from each other but where is the interest, and what could the west offer? On the other hand it is a great loss for the west to ignore the ancient Orthodox tradition of hermitic life that continues unabated from even before the idea of a Catholic split in Christianity.
Besides this, there is a fundamental difference between the two in understanding the nature of God in relation to men, let alone the liberal opening of the west towards giving consideration to sexual preferences in faith. I personally don't support such an example of learning [other than how not to do it...]
@@d1427 Eastern Catholics are Christians with Eastern rite liturgies who have remained or have reunited with Rome due to not wishing to remain in schism.
Where is the interest you say? Maybe none from you apparently. But there are many who wish to learn and do so. What does the west have to offer you say? Perhaps some humility. Western Catholicism has a rich history of saintly writings and doctors that many have found quite insightful; likewise with the Eastern Catholic dessert Fathers and Saints.
Both Eastern and Western Catholicism have the same creeds and are not opposed in doctrine. What they do have is a different approach to theology, and I think that is where each gets their strength and weakness.
Both the west and the east have had ruptures in Christian teaching. The Orthodox for instance have ruptures in the teaching of divorce, contraception, authority. And many in the west don't value tradition enough. Those who wish to preserve the faith wish to fix these ruptures by going to the roots and leaving the revolutionaries to their own self-destructive demise.
By your own words of not supporting good examples of learning, it would certainly explain your lack of humility and hatred of western Christianity

he doesn't need anybody because God is with him. he is not afraid of death because we Catholics believe that Jesus will resurrect us from the dead if we follow him. because real salvation is not in this world. it's after this life.

If you wish to be a hermit as a spiritual journey you should look up to this man and the position he has made for himself rather than critique his lifestyle. If you had the balls to live as a true hermit by your definition you'd pack as much useful items in a backpack and go out into the woods to live in solitude even if it meant sleeping on the forest floor and scavenging for insects to eat...
