That penny looks to me to be in VF35 condition, so not too bad for something circilulated that long. With the offset error and the IBERTY error, it could be worth quite a bit.

It's not like the edge of another coin struck the letter "L" and removed it as sometimes happens when they are bagged. There would at least be some evidence of that happening. Looks like an extra letter showed up on the other side of the coin. Look straight above 1972 about mouth high. Can’t tell what it is but maybe it’s your missing ‘L’. I have seen a couple of these with weak strikes on the L, even an L on the rim. But not one with no L at all.

I'm pretty sure this is a "grease error" where the die was greased multiple times without being cleaned causing the die to strike down the metal where the "L" should be. If you want to know more or see another example look for BlueRidgeSilverHound's video over the quarter he found with this error. Hope this helped!
That is definitely a rare dye misprint or a buffing incident where they off the coin up and I accidentally buff the L off of the coin. It's so this coin could be one of a kind in worth unknown amount of money if it's the only one in currency.

I haven't been a coin roll hunter long, but I've found a couple coins like this myself. I found a 197?-Denver penny which is missing the last date digit and has a very faint 7 as the second to last digit. I confirmed this to be a pre-1982 copper penny by weighing it, so it's more than likely from the 1970's. It's also missing the "E-" in, "E-PLURIBUS UNUM" on the reverse. This penny, like the one in the video, is in pretty good condition with no noticeable scratches. In addition to this, I found a 2009 nickel with no mint mark (2009 nickels are supposed to either have a P or D mint mark) which is in great condition. What makes me think though is how these supposed errors are in such iconic spots, almost as if they're there intentionally. Could I have just gotten lucky, or do you think these are faked? If they're real, how much do you think they could be worth (I'm not going to sell them either way)?
Swamp Donkey Detecting doesn't explain why the rest of the letters are crisp and clear in liberty. But grease filled die errors are very common and are probably not worth a lot unlike the wire strike errors. My guess is that something solid blocked the negative portion of the L like solidified grease or something due to improper cleaning so this might be a "Ghost". I'm betting there is a 72D that has a light strike from the same grease filled die and then another 72D that might have a wire strike after the die was cleaned with a wire brush leaving one of the bristles trapped on the die.
I checked my coins, especially 1972 D. You are absolutely correct LIBERTY is latterly shows as IBERTY on my coin too, so there must be a lot of them out there or maybe few of them, but for sure me and you have one:)
