This is almost certainly my nostalgia talking, but I really like how barebones the design of the OG LEGO droideka is. The later ones I think are trying and failing to be more faithful to the actual design with more curved parts for the lower orb and head/back plating, whereas the first of them all lets your imagination fill in way more and overall looks in place with the rest of LEGO, especially sets of the time period. I especially dislike how several of them went for leg parts that can't even move! Sure, they stand up alright, but LEGO is about play, not just making display pieces! I should be able to wiggle my droids' legs around like they're walking, or at least position them at different angles.
Alas, those old droid arm pieces were prone to breaking, and when my droideka's grey ones started to break and I couldn't keep it together anymore, the surviving arm parts became prosthetics for my Life on Mars aliens who tragically lost their arms to repeated use. Many of them remain amputees to this day...
What I'm really not sure of is why they won't just make some new molds for specialized parts to build these things. Yeah, they might be limited in utility, but LEGO also kept making sets with droidekas in them. Surely, at some point, that justifies a specialized part or two, right? Or, maybe not. Your design blows all the rest out of the water with no need for custom parts, and I just may have to get some parts and make a few myself.

The original lego Droideka is easily my favorite for the fairly appropriate proportions and shaping, but most of all the ability to actually fold it up into a ball! I don't know if it was really intentional by the designer, but it's such a key coolness-factor of the Droidekas, and it's a shame none of the later iterations have attempted this.
Your design is really cool, although personally I'd might attempt to try and combine it with some of the elements of the original.

I have allways loved the design of the droideka even before I got into starwars, I might have to build your custom one just to add to my minifig display

Wow, this is amazing! Yours is definitely the best looking of the droidekas.
As somebody who prefers display pieces play features don't matter so much, but it'd still be awesome to see one that can actually roll!

Best droids in all of Star Wars. I love them.
I hate the 2007 and 2018 ones. Cant even roll up.
Yours looks fantastic, and it could probably roll up in some capacity too

Agreed with the OG 2002 Droideka...nothing really can beat it that lego's put out since then. Looked around for a jedi defense set for years as a teen before giving up, only to find both a few years ago and having the memories flood back from the game. First time since I was a kid I was willing to open an unopened star wars set.
Yours that all said is likely the second best/tied for first, just seems kinda small to me? I know its closer to accurate for on screen size but yeah. Love the use of the claws for the eyes.

I would love to see this format for the Spider Droids. I love those things and am interested to see which is most accurate.
Also I have the last Droidika and I got it from the Lego Star Wars magazine.

Love your design, but its true one major flaw with it that it can't fold up to roll like an actual Droideka. Still one of the best attempts I've seen!

something else you could potentially achieve with your moc are the two side panels that aren't present in any of the official builds, thanks to the weapon rack's extra pinholes

I have to give you props for using the claw as the eyes of the droideka; frankly genius part usage. That being said, while your custom is certainly more accurate, I feel it’s inferior to the original 2002 minifigure because, as far as I can see, it falls into the same trap that a lot of the others do by being completely incapable of curling into a ball. That to me is why the original is peak: not just nostalgia, not just because it appeared in the game, but because can do everything I would want a Lego droideka to do.

I built a droideka once too. It's a fair bit larger than "to scale" though, using the smallest Bionicle parts I have.

Dreat video, and your droideka is adorable, but one of the best and most defining things about those droids were their ability to roll. I love when LEGO prioritizes that aspect when they do their designs, witch is why the first one still is one of the best. I feel like leveing that aspect out of the video is a bit sad. I whould have liked to se your take on a rollable droideka.

The first Droideka design was near perfect, although slightly tall it had all the right dimensions. The one thing that makes it even better which you have not shown was that the first one can roll up unlike the other ones. Your own take is great but I don’t think Lego would agree to use Wolverine claws as the head lol
