If Game and Watch was actually finished as intended (l cancel aireals and bigger shield) he might actually be viable. With a chain grab on spacies he could actually be around Samus and Yoshi in the right hands. It’s fascinating how small little mistakes can change a character so significantly

He'd be a high tier around Falcon's level, an L-cancelable back air would be insane.
having a chaingrab on spacies alone isn't enough to make a character viable. Roy can chaingrab the spacies. Pichu can chaingrab the spacies
GnW has decent mobility, range, and power, but there are still a lot of things that would need to be changed to make him good:
-a much better grab (considering most his combos come off grab)
-better oos options (at least fix spot dodge and roll)
-a real projectile instead of neutral B (useless move)
Due to Mr Game & Watch being 2D, realistically no fighter can really see him well from their pov

Any character with two working eyes would be able to see him. He'd be hella narrow, but still, depth perception would unmask him.

The story of melee’s rapid development is one of the most incredible stories ever. The fact that they were able to get so much done in so little time is mind boggling. Also the jank is so charming.
That's what happens when a bunch of talented people know what they're doing. These were the early 2000's, much better times made by more intelligent people.

they did that with project m and it was a mistake
I feel like a Melee 2.0 with only SLIGHT buffs to characters would make the game outlive any other. I mean things like being able to jump out of kirby throws or the last hit of luigis dash attack, alongside all the g&w fixes (things that are clearly development oversights), as well as some tweaks like reducing the lag on ness b moves or ganon side b snapping ledge. Still, if it’s not developed by nintendo there’s no hope for a tournament viable sequel

@@AlexFBauer Buffs aside, i think just fixing the stuff that feels unintentional/ unfinished would be awesome. Luigi having to charge his down b, yoshi's grab, kirby's throws, roy and gnw as a whole, the invisible ceiling, etc. (Also maybe throw in the frozen version of stadium and improve nana ai if possible)

Our closest thing: In 2010, Nintendo reissued Ball, the first G&W game.
I don't think he'd work in any modern-type games, his whole shtick is that he basically belongs in the LCD land and era he's from, and kind of sticks out like a sore thumb anywhere else.
(I'd totally buy if they did make new G&W games, though. They're fun to have!)
I have always thought that a Game & Watch rhythm game would work today, though...
@@SP_Sour They could make it look like it's an LCD game though. The gimmick could involve treating the way he's "animated" at face value, making all of his movements a series of tiny teleportations. Players could time when he disappears to avoid obstacles and such.

yeah, I found that part really interesting, man did they rush this character
They had too becuase back in the day smash was so successfull for the 64 the devlopment team had one year to make melee. You can tell towards the end of the devlopment they rushed to much of the game to so it can be released with the Nintendo gamecube back in 2001. If Nintendo simply waited like 02 to 03 melee would be a prefect game and you would most likely have characters like sonic, snake, and maybe banjo back then. They was an article about how they want to get those characters in melee but due to time restrictions and copyright infringement for thrid party character back then it was hard for them to pull off this game and watch was thrown in there to just make a complete 24 character roster. People forget this and bash melee for it. It's the problem we have to today kids are impatience and what games rushed and then complain the the game is not finished.

That they need to fill a spot and they probably want to bring awareness to their character becuase before mario. G&w was Nintendo first mascot.

That sounds silly. Old games aren’t defined by being a glitchy mess, they defined as being...well, ‘old.’ Age is where most of their negatives are seen.
I like to look at it like at least he got in the game at all. Its not like they were expecting this game to be a pro fighter people pick apart, they didn’t even want it to be a fighting game really.
Probably a good 80% of players did not notice game and watches flaws because you need to be a pro player to even notice.

I really enjoy these game design commentary type videos. You should do more of them, maybe about Ness glitches or weird hurtboxes in Melee.
i suck ass at melee but it was a big part of my childhood and i love these videos. theyre all just as informative as that watch for rolling rocks with 0.5 A press video. the way you use the characters in the video are hilarious! keep but the great work!!!

I always thought the shield bubble just turns off your hit boxes, had no idea the exposed limbs means you can still get damaged.

Quickly becoming one of my favorite channels fucking great content.
I like to think Game and Watch's copied qualities are due to him technically being the main character of Nintendo before Mario, with Game and Watch coming out a year before Donkey Kong.
It's possible that the oversight for his aerials being programmed as specials instead of airiels was because they were initially MEANT to be his specials.
I mean just look at the artwork for the neutral air, that looks like it can be an up-b. And the back air also looks like it's his down-b after being fully charged. I have no idea about the up-air though, that just looks like an aerial.
The Nair became his up special in Ultimate, FYI.
Because, you know... Parachutes are for flying and stuff...

It literally became the end animation of his Up-B in every game since Melee, but that doesn't mean it was suppose to be. Unlike in Melee the Parachute doesn't damage the opponent it just helps horizontal recovery.
