I remember watching this series as a kid and liked it, but this one is anachronistic in that the story line doesn't match the times it's supposed to take place in. A kid the boy's age, even in the 40s much less in the 1800s, would have already killed hundreds of chickens himself, since it would have been his job to kill one for Sunday dinner after church. That's 52 chickens a year, so he wouldn't have been in the least shocked by the man killing one. Also, the American bison was killed in part to starve the western plains Indians, not just for money and the period of buffalo hunters was short, just as the period of the "mountain man" was only about 20 years, if that. Ranchers at the time were not exactly anti hunting and still aren't to this day. But even then most hunters only killed what they ate with a few exceptions, like predators. All the way up into the 40s the federal government had bounties on just about all predators, including eagles and bears. Very little about this story makes sense. Fortunately, most of the rest of them were better. The shooting on these shows isn't realistic at all, but that goes without saying.
Pa most likely kill the chickens, not the boy and probably with an ax chopping there head off, not by strangling them with his bare hands and the buffalo were killed for sport and money,

This was a TV show meant for cheap entertainment, not a PhD Thesis on 19th century western american culture. LOL
The number of bison killed by hunters was trivial compared to their total numbers. Disease was what actually eradicated the bison.
Pa most likely kill the chickens, not the boy and probably with an ax chopping there head off, not by strangling them with his bare hands and the buffalo were killed for sport and money,
