I really liked how this game keeps it fair without it being a bullet hell.
The power ups in this game are amazing and are very helpful.

I still remember playing this game on an arcade machine near our house, just looking at the enemies gets me anxious if im already late at school since I used to play this on mornings before going to school
Things I still remember while playing this
    1) On stage 2, you wont get hit by enemies if you stay on bottom right of the screen in the part of spaceship thing
    2) Lv 4-5 of the mini shooter will follow the enemies always if you triple click B
    3) There's a shrimp thing boss stage here thats is very hard for me to finish
    4) Atomic will let you attack enemies bullets
    5) I've never ever finished this game my entire life

You can stay in the bottom right corner of the screen when the shrimp emerges. You won’t get hit by the bouncing lasers

Good to see this game in a different version than the Snes I'm used to. Homing, homing, homing... wingman level 3 -> atomic missiles :D

The Arcade version of this game is great and the Snes version is great too. I say this game is a Thunder force clone not because it has the word force. But with it's graphics and it's rolling options that move around your ship is pretty good. Thunder Force plus Darius plus Thunder Cross equals Earth Defense Force.

about time Jaleco's most well-known property got the W.O.L. treatment... and by Sensei SCHLAUCHI no less! yet as masterful as this game was, I haven't been able, in the years I've known it, to shake the feeling that the bosses (with exception of the 1st. one) were "inspired" by other staples of the shmup genre: 2]ThunderForce, 3 and ther last one]R-Type, 4]Darius & 5]Gradius. but that may just be me! other than, it's IMO an essential addendum to any MAME library if you're a shmup enthusiast!

It kinda reminds of carrier airwave with the way the plane flies around etc but this has more a space atmosphere and I'm guessing a little bit of RPG thrown in with that level gauge down at the bottom of the screen cause I notice the weapons change each time that fills up.

Unlike the arcade version, the SNES port lacks multiplayer. If the arcade version is played on M.A.M.E., you’ll have the luxury of unlimited continues, thus no need for the save state function. Unless you’re skilled enough, the save state function is necessary when playing the SNES version, whether is via emulation or the Wii U Virtual Console or Nintendo Switch Online.

Luckily "EDF" or Earth Defense Force" itself isn't really trademarkable (at least in the EU and in many parts of Asia) since it is such a generic term. It has been used in works of fiction since at least the 1950s.

Yeah, I grew up with the SNES version of this -- never even knew it had an arcade original. At first I thought this looked mostly-superior with the gorgeous clouds in stage 1 and the better-sounding OST, but I quickly realized; the SNES port actually has 4 more weapons, one more total stage (with the only one totally omitted being the volcano one which had kind of awful music here anyway), arguably better arrangements of many of the songs, and even prettier backgrounds in some parts, plus it seems like it was much more challenging. Oh, and it has a much cooler finale sequence and a whole new boss at the end, that's always cool.

I’d like to see a brand new E.D.F., this time in Unreal Engine 4 or 5 like R-Type Final 2. I’d like to see how E.D.F. would be like with polygon based graphics as opposed to pixel graphics. Keep the nostalgia joke out of it. Pixel graphics come with gameplay limitations. Maybe the developer of R-Type Final 2 should develop such a game.

    • @meriscorditan2799

I know this is an old comment, but if I would have to guess, it’s to make the bullets more distinguishable so the player can see them better. This is especially true for more hectic shooters, like bullet hell types.

I distinctly remember there being one more boss after the final one in this video (a big turtle-like creature that chases you backwards through the enemy base). Is that only available in another version or difficulty, or was a criteria to make it appear not met?

@@koopakape Although it's possible that Jaleco was gonna have said turtle-like creature in the original arcade version of E.D.F. and said boss fight was to have a time limit that if it ran out would result in a bad ending.
