    It's spiritual. Transcends time and space. Pure light. A ray of beauty. The beat is pretty badass, too.

    When I was a young man, I was one of those jazz purists who didn’t like what Ornette was making, but many years later and listening to more of his music, I realized I was wrong.
    The more I listen to Ornette Coleman, the more I appreciate him and his genius.
    Rest In Peace Ornette Coleman 🙏🏾

      i`m a jazz purist too, in the sense, but i think that such artists as ornette, cecil taylor, don cherry, etch are pure jazz

      yep. i was the opposite. thought all jazz besides ornette was trite (I was coming from metal -> john zorn -> ornette). ken burns of all people really framed things for me and once i got over that little initial hiccup ....well, it's a gift of endless depth, aint it?

    Dissonance is all relative. People shouldn't be so offended or threatened by it. One person's noise is beauty to another person's ears.
    The wider ranger of genres of music, etc one listens to will enhance their perspective.

      I think I get why people have problems with it. Mainstream feeds you with "sugar" all time and than suddenly getting the whole range of taste is "too much", so they close up and cry. I myself started leaving the boundries of producing"normal" music after 40 years and though I felt the fascination almost right from the beginning (otherwise I wouldnt have continued) it took me 3-4 years to overcome the "this is funny - what am I doing here - am I getting crazy now?" to finally accept the universal freedom that comes with it. Then you hear people freaking out like "you cant doooooo that, its against the "rules" of ... " and you realise its the same mind jail like in so many other areas (dresscode, behaviour, furniture, gardens, actually nearly everywhere ... we get used to the "normal" things and lose openes to the endless space of possibilities. Like someone demanding a highway through the jungle screaming "I cant walk here - this should be forbidden!"
      I think another mistake people (listeners) make is thinking they have to "understand" whats going on (intelectually, rationally etc.) instead of just letting it work on them and experience how their mind opens up and broadens like with traveling, or other experiences ...
      anyways: just my 2 cents

    There is increasing attention to the amount of nonvideo content or otherwise unhelpful content on TH-cam. There were two stories on the excellent show "On the Media" (available on podcast) about this, including a response by TH-cam guru. As users commented on the show, the presence of incorrect links makes it much harder to find the VIDEOS that one goes onto TH-cam to find. That is what this site is about. No one is stopping anyone from putting music on another site. Also, check out Spotify.

    Because of Ornette's interest and playing with the Master Musicians of Joujouka/Jajouka isn't this more likely to be a Moroccan Ghaita or Rhaita rather than a Suona which is Chinese. The Ghaita or Rhaita is often known as the Arabic Oboe and the Chinese version is called a Suona.

    At about 10:56 i finally had to stop. I really want to enjoy this, and feel as though i'm somehow musically handicapped because i don't, but it is down right painful to listen to. It is suitable as movie soundtrack music to accompany the 2-3 minute violent fight scene that leaves blood and severed limbs strewn across the gutter.

    • @RWP108
      @RWP108 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I totally agree. And ironicall, so did Thelonious Monk, who was himself often hard to listen to....
      "At this time the fashion is to bring something to jazz that I reject. They speak of freedom. But one has no right, under pretext of freeing yourself, to be illogical and incoherent by getting rid of structure and simply piling a lot of notes one on top of the other. There’s no beat anymore. You can’t keep time with your foot. I believe that what is happening to jazz with people like Ornette Coleman, for instance, is bad. There’s a new idea that consists in destroying everything and find what’s shocking and unexpected; whereas jazz must first of all tell a story that anyone can understand."
      -Thelonious Monk

    • @JeremiahEnglish
      @JeremiahEnglish 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perfect. I'm a big Monk fan. This makes sense to me. Thanks.

      RWP108
      The fact that Thelonious (a very idiosyncratic person himself) also called Ornette crazy is ironic as well.
      Thelonious' remarks is in my opinion testament to the revolutionary style of Ornette's music. It's so revolutionary, even Thelonious Monk doesn't like it. That by itself is an honor and a compliment.
      What Monk said about Ornette and free jazz in general is exactly what critics said about Monk and bebop in the 1940s.

    I have been trying to find Ornette Coleman VIDEOS on this website for videos. But there are dozens of entries like this--recordings of published and readily available music. It's difficult to tell what is a video. So, now I don't look for Ornette Coleman videos.
    No matter how useful it is to have Mr. Coleman's music (without paying him anything for it), it is bad if such entries overwhelm the purpose of the website--providing videos.
    Kindly note that I have responded civilly to your reply.

    @kevinherbert i get what you're saying, but i say that if someone has 'musical ears' (i.e. is an improviser/a composer to some degree) and he/she figures out a way to make tones on a given instrument, then he/she may/could say something pertinent/expressive/e.t.c. despite lack of proper technique and/or fluidity on it...
