As an elder, this made me cry. That at age 69 I should be marginalized as unnecessary and unworthy is an affront to who I am. The community you seek to achieve is what many would appreciate if they recognized their need. I watch your channel with the enthusiasm and love of a parent. Seeing what you are accomplishing makes my heart glow!
Yeah, I’m an ole bird myself. Keeping in touch with the youngers rounds my life. Live in the present, remember the past through stories and style, plans for future adventures.
Even as a somewhat still “youngster”, this also hit me hard - I turned around to discover I have very little in the way of a community after college and the first bought house and stable job and find myself searching for these social connections almost every day. I agree with what James said about there needing to be a giving and taking - an exchange - between all ages otherwise we just lose so much. Too much imbalance in the world otherwise.
Yes! I'm here for Doreen too! The way she jumps right on and drives heavy equipment shows that she's been in for the entire process! I'd live to hear their entire live story and how they've come to be the people they are today. I'd like to know a bit about there children too and if they are following in their parents footsteps. Barren and Elsa, you also have supportive families who have helped you during different stages of Scamp living. I feel that you've set goals and kept your eyes on them which led you to James and Doreen. They needed you as much as you needed them. You are a big part of this community that's being built. I think things happen for a reason and your respect for people, the land, and each other have landed you at this particular place and time. Talk about life being mysterious.
YES! I was thinking the same. As a 58 year old woman I can tell you that those older wise women that I was close to years ago have shaped me in such a powerful and lasting way. Now it’s my turn
I feel like James saw the potential in Barron to carry on the legacy of helping others and handing down skills to future generations. It's really beautiful to see their friendship unfold.
This was so cool to watch! I really hope James shares his full story. He's a true and shining example of how important the elders in our society should be.
I also just recently lost everything from leaving a high control group like James. Your videos give me hope that i can regain the community I lost and have a good life again.
Awesome to hear from James! Love his philosophy on the old giving back to the young instead of being high and mighty. What a world it would be if we all worked together for the greater good.
Very impressive! James is a very knowledgeable smart man. You are so lucky to have James helping you build your dream home. He should have a TH-cam channel himself! So mesmerizing to listen in, explaining the building process. You can talk forever James love it! 😊
This was one of the most informative and interesting videos to date. James is a natural speaker and quite intelligent. He clearly has a lot to offer, so I say pick that brain of his as deeply as he's willing to afford us. Thank you Elsa, Barron and James. You have friends out here in www land that are grateful for you all.
Buy land out in the Boondocks and happenstance brings this knowledgeable man James into the picture. Wow! Interesting building, your going to have a strong house built on a solid foundation . I learned a lot watching this concrete tiny house series, mortarless dry stacking, quick wall, Lintels. And a lot more. Cool stuff.
Intergenerational conversations are the best and needed to be showcased more like this one. Love the use of "entitled"...us older generation are entitled to Give Back to the next generations coming up behind us. Only way we continue certain legacies, and only way one gets stronger and gains necessary knowledge and lifeskills as an individual. Thank you for sharing this amazing conversation! From Denver, CO.
I can't agree more with James' opinions on how the older generation should give back to the younger. Every place I have moved in the last 5 years we have ended up with amazing friends who are all older than us. We learn so much from each other. I hope more people can feel that joy!
Yes. This is what coming alongside looks like. This is what community looks like. Too rare in our ME, ME, ME culture which has resulted in isolation, smallness of soul, living lives the size of a thimble, and aching loneliness. James, Doreen, Elsa, Barron..and those in their extended 'tribe' are providing a glimpse of 'how it can be'...what so many heart's desire. Community.
Love listening to James! He is a walking encyclopedia. I was surprised that he’s my age. He certainly has youthful exuberance! You & Barron are definitely going to be your generations James & Doreen. Awesome video!! Love you guys!!!❤️❤️❤️
I’ve loved James and his wife ever since you introduced them. You have found great friends and wonderful mentors. They left the restricted life style and now have the freedom to be what they were meant to be. They didn’t leave their faith behind.
Wonderful interview. Thank you James for sharing with us, and especially your life knowledge and neighborly generosity with Elsa and Barron. Good neighbors are priceless.
Fabulous video. Hearing from a master builder and architect was fascinating to listen to and giving his opinion from decades of construction work. More please
He is such an amazing man. Y'all got lucky living close to him, what great neighbors. If we could all live this way, life would be so much better. So excited to see the house all done.
What a nice sit down. I do have one question; would James ever consider running a building workshop course to help new builders learn his alternative techniques? I would enjoy learning from him in exchange for labor on his next building project.
Such a lovely gentleman! It's been really heartwarming seeing James and Doreen in your videos lately and witnessing (even in some small part) the positive influence you're clearly having in each others lives.
Good on you James...you tell it straight....I live in Alabama and "stick" homes have many repair/maintenance issues.... I personally have the same opinion as you. I am positive that Elsa and Barron will be delighted with their home...it is built right. Blessings and Good Wishes to all.
It’s always great listening to James and would love to hear more. What y’all have together as a community is amazing! I have no doubt that making more videos like this will make a difference in others lives. Especially love what James said about old and young working together.
What an incredible gift you have in James & Doreen as neighbors and friends! Feels like a higher power brought you all together for this time. It’s beautiful to watch. I love the energy going into your home-the love is going to radiate from the walls as well as the heat!
Took a little break & now binge watching trying to catch up! I could literally type 4 ever re this video. Loved the trip w/James & Barron. Elsa, the way u edit is what I love most! It's just tells a story every time. It's personal, business, relationship, family, community, construction, educational on so many levels, off grid life, cooking, mental/physical/spiritual health, animals (both domestic and dinner).😊 It is all that and so much more! And Elsa puts it all together so beautifully. Then u add Barron's knowledge of tech, (and just about everything else it seems), and I am a smitten kitten.💝I understand time constraints and will be here regardless, because all of those things have 2 things in common...Elsa & Barron. I think u are a wonderful couple, perfectly made for each other and I love watching your life as it unfolds together. U both play to your strengths, support each other's weaknesses and encourage each other thru all the bumps along the way. You seem to compliment each other in every way!💕I couldn't help but notice Barron's ring on his left hand in the truck petting James' dog. U two didn't go off and get married did u? I said I could type 4 ever! Sorry 😅Back to the binge watching. Please have more w/James. Would love to hear his life story. Also, does he have any single brothers? Asking for a friend. Lol😘Regardless of your choices, try not to stress. It won't change anything but your mood and your health. Enjoy each day and know your journey will turn out exactly as it was supposed to. Might as well enjoy the ride! Thanks for all your hard work and sharing your lives with us. 🙏🏽💝✌🏼
James is such a blessing. There's not many people so giving of their time and knowledge so freely. Elsa and Barron...knowing what you know now do you think you could've done this project without James's guidance? He seems like he's guiding you through this whole process.
Oh my gosh, thank you so much for doing this! First off, I’m so sorry for the loss of James and Doreen’s friends and former community, I know that must be so painful and difficult. I just absolutely love this guy! He’s so amazing, he knows so much but even more than that he has such gentle, humble energy. I really could listen to him for hours. You are all so lucky to have met one another and to be enriching each other’s lives. I am very interested to hear more about James and Doreen’s journey. Thank you again so much for filming this video for us, I really appreciate it.
What a interesting man, so articulate, intelligent, kind, and wise. Would love to hear more about his life. I thoroughly enjoyed this and hope to see more with James. You truly are blessed to have him in your lives.
True friendships are rare in today's world. Many acquaintances can be made, however, true friendship stands the test of time, is secure through mutual respect, trust and endures trials still staying strong. You ALL are SO VERY BLESSED to have something so sacred that many people only dream of in life. May God continue to bless all of you richly a you have blessed others.
When we built our house, we laid the first row wet, and the last row wet. In between the block was laid dry. we put rebar in the openings and poured concrete also. When the walls were done we parged both the front and back with a product called B-Bond. There was another product called Sure-Wall. This product is a rich mortar with fiberglass pieces in it. It does leave a finished smooth wall. Our house was built in 1983, and we have had no issues of any kind. We put a french drain around our house, and also have a swale that takes the water runoff from the driveway away from the house. We have never had a water issue. Building this way the wall is flexurally stronger then laying the block traditionally. You can't build vertically to high with this method. We only did our basement with this method, and post and beam for the two stories.
This was so fun and informative. How lucky you all are to have found each other and the beautiful community you have. Friends that are family is a very rare find. Love you all. 💕💫
James is an amazing friend. I want him as a friend!! I am not even building a home or anything, but I absolutely LOVE you guys. It is so interesting watching the progress you share with us all here on YT. Thank you for sharing, and giving of yourselves to us all!
I love James' attitude. Seeing him talk shop all while sitting in a zero gravity chair is so fun to watch. This video is absolutely perfect for your channel right now. Less time intensive, but you'll still get your views, and it continues your Normal2Nomad podcast style. Perfect perfect perfect
Dang, I love everything James is saying about building and about community. I think his community just expanded by a few hundred in the last hour. Thanks so much for this content!!
Entertaining and educational! James is right on target with his philosophy. And, log homes are beautiful, inside and out, but, as James said, you are a slave to maintenance and upkeep. Look forward to learning more from James and Doreen!
Oh man what a joy that was. To talk with someone that has experience with so many building systems and to hear educated opinions. James is one of those guys that you'd love to work with on whatever and pick his brain.
James is a very smart and wise man! He definitely knows what he's talking about when it comes to building. I'm so glad he's out of that religious c u l t. The good Lord will send him some true friends. Looks like he already has. Tell James to write a book I'll buy it. I enjoyed this video see y'all in the next one.
Yes! I’m 59& I know the knowledge and info. That we can pass to the next generation. Love your endless Compation for your life style, that’s what makes you guys so interesting to watch, this interview was Great! ❤️✨🙏🏻
WOW. I love James even more. He talked about the older generation giving back to the younger generation. I wish I could've been taught a skill from my grandparents or my aunt's, but nothing. Many people complain about the younger generation not knowing a life skill, when they aren't willing to put in the effort to teach them.
Loved this! My husband and I were also raised in a very conservative religion that we left together at 21, and they also practice shunning. I can’t imagine starting over in our 60s but you are obviously making so many friends and sharing your skills with others. Good for you!!
Thank you Elsa and Barron! for directing us to James and doreen's video of their bus home. It is so beautiful I can only imagine how beautiful your home will be once it's done with the help of your truly legendary friend James! 😊👍
If I didnt live in Canada and could make a living in the US, I'd build with his expertise. I love his values and I'm aligned with economical approaches and materials. And yes, like to hear about James and Doreen and their life...but if they prefer to forget the past and move forward with visions of the future...Im here for it!
Hola Elsa&Barron! I enjoyed Listening to your Conversation with James... He is a well of information for sure... I admire your respect you show towards James and His wife! Looking forward too seeing the Build moving forward! 👍😊🇺🇸
Wow!! Such a knowledgeable elder!! This man is a living treasure that should be loved by all! James is the neighbour we all would love to have! Thankyou James for doing this interview. Much appreciated. Elsa and Barron you must feel awesome knowing that you have such wealth of knowledge at hand. Wishing you all the very best as you continue on the build. It’s so exciting! Big hugs!
I live in central Texas and have a lot of sun and heat. I'm really interested in this concrete block type of home but will it keep me cool during the summers here? I'm wanting to stay under 500sq feet too. AND I would love to hear James and Doreen's story, the teaser is interesting! ❤️
Enjoyed the vid 👍 Good points for not wanting to do "stick" homes & log cabins. One point not brought up which I have experienced: Termites 🐜 When we sell our current 🏡; we're going back to block.
Yes please... more of James' past! The younger generation not only needs the community and skills taught by the older generation; we need to learn from their past experiences. We are influenced daily from numerous sources... not all good. We need to learn when and where we can. Thank you!
James is the man!! Such an awesome blessing to have you guys meet him and become great neighbors and friends. Professional contractor!! and building a house...sometimes the universe lines up pretty nicely.
Thanks to each of you for the time it took to create this. Im always inspired by your way of living and the people you surround yourselves with. The courage each of you clearly embody on the regular - it makes it really easy to root for you (all) from afar. much love
It was fascinating to hear from James. I love his phylosophy of lending assistance to each other among a diverse age group. There's an inner peace that comes with choosing to do something nice for someone. It's good for our health and happiness. We all benefit from respect in our social connections. It's so unfortunate that there are so many in leadership positions that set a very different tone in today's social media. This concept is lost on them and we all pay the price with higher levels of emotional stress. Thanks for sharing.
I love the relationship between James and Barron. When I was young in a very stable neighborhood, the men worked together helping each other out building and repairing things. You don't see that so much anymore, at least here in the northeast. This is the kind of male friendships I grew up around and it warms my heart. AND I loved watching the video of their road trip.
What an interesting conversation. I find it refreshing to see young adults so willing to accept and learn from an elder with such respect and admiration. Many times what we older generation hear is our input is old fashioned and definitely not wanted. I believe it wasn’t by coincidence that you guys became neighbors. I say, Go Team! Love it!
My pop mostly built our house when I was 4-5 years old. It was also a block home, he let an electrician do all the wiring and was insistent that it not have aluminum wiring-my pop was a perfectionist. He also had a fear of fire, so the inside walls are made of brick…makes it hard to hang a picture, but very solid. I’m very appreciative of his efforts, now that my parents have passed away, I inherited the house. I sometime think about getting a tiny home, but I hate to give up my childhood home. I doubt I ever would. ✌🏼❤️
This is so profound! I’ve been watching you alls journey for 3 years. Your commitment to yourselves, each other and the process of living authentically, while being good to the planet is a work of art. So impressed, what a magnificent blueprint! 💓
So, James is an amazing human being. He is a blessing and I'm so glad he's here to provide knowledge and to help the younger generation. His advice is so important.
What people don’t often talk about is building mass against the elements when you live in an environment of extremes cold heat rain and in particular wind the benefit of mass in your building is really important. To be able to reduce wind noise to feel the mass between you and the outside when it is storming or in a heatwave really is important to comfort levels and noise reduction. You don’t want it to feel like the storm is inside or your dwelling can’t withstand it’s onslaught. This building and method makes perfect sense to me.
James speaking has changed my mind about homes. I guess you don’t think about it too much but he’s right it is standardized and doesn’t go above & beyond on anything! Great hearing from him 🤗
Ok but James is my freeeekkkkin fave. I loved this video so much. Not gonna lie- Elsa I felt like you and Barron were having to defend yourselves and I loathe that.... but as always, y'all handled it with the style and grace I hope to embody one day even though I am older than you. Thanks. JUST THANKS.
What a beautiful amazing man James ❤️❤️❤️ Would love for you both to have another informal chat with James about your philosophy on life in general 👍👍👍 Excellent video really enjoyed it 👏👏👏 thank you Love from the UK x
I have a log cabin in Derbyshire uk great as a go too but as a full-time home it would be way to expensive with keeping it warm seven days a week You have definitely done the right thing listening to James, us olders definitely need to let younger ones pick our brains if the want too
Wrote a huge paragraph & just deleted it James has a beautiful soul Anything he's willing to share will definitely be beneficial to someone listent You don't reach his age without a lot of wisdom That should be heard/shared and learned from Maybe this is a way to reach the younger generation
The transfer of tribal knowledge. That unwritten experience that the older generation has is just amazing. I wouldn't know what to do with out my dad's experiences to lean on. Glad you guys have found such a resource right down the road.
Very wise comment and I completely agree.
Yeah, I’m an ole bird myself. Keeping in touch with the youngers rounds my life. Live in the present, remember the past through stories and style, plans for future adventures.
😃🌷❤🌷🏠
I agree with you. I'm 60 and disabled but I feelni still have value. You certainly do!
Love James. So happy he was willing to be interviewed. Would love to see more of him and Doreen.

I like seeing how having James in his life at this time in his life will no doubt have a shaping into who Barron will be as an older man.
YES! I was thinking the same. As a 58 year old woman I can tell you that those older wise women that I was close to years ago have shaped me in such a powerful and lasting way. Now it’s my turn
Same thought, too. Both generations respect each other. Beautiful thing.
If/when Barron goes grey, here's to hoping he ends up looking like James' beautiful hair.
I feel like James saw the potential in Barron to carry on the legacy of helping others and handing down skills to future generations. It's really beautiful to see their friendship unfold.
@@table4glasses very true
James has such a warm, wise energy about him. Y'all hit the jackpot buying land next to such wonderful people.
This was so cool to watch! I really hope James shares his full story. He's a true and shining example of how important the elders in our society should be.
Totally and fully agreed
I also just recently lost everything from leaving a high control group like James. Your videos give me hope that i can regain the community I lost and have a good life again.
Awesome to hear from James! Love his philosophy on the old giving back to the young instead of being high and mighty. What a world it would be if we all worked together for the greater good.
Tried t hit like but it computer chose dislike. Wrong
PLEASE have James do a long story about his life - he’s super cool, so curious about his life experience.
This was so awesome. Loved hearing about James the man. What a talented, loyal friend.
I love seeing Barron and James together! I think James and Barron are spiritual brothers /kin. But I could listen to James talk for hours on his own.
Wish everyone had a James in their life! The knowledge he’s willing to share is just priceless
Very impressive! James is a very knowledgeable smart man. You are so lucky to have James helping you build your dream home. He should have a TH-cam channel himself! So mesmerizing to listen in, explaining the building process. You can talk forever James love it! 😊
This Q+A was so informative. Hope to see more. The relationship that you've developed...nothing better.

What a great video, both in terms of questions and answers but also to see the friendship and respect among you all.

Great chat, love listening to James, what a wealth of knowledge & experience, totally agree with him, enjoy your week xxx
WOW. I love James even more. He talked about the older generation giving back to the younger generation. I wish I could've been taught a skill from my grandparents or my aunt's, but nothing. Many people complain about the younger generation not knowing a life skill, when they aren't willing to put in the effort to teach them.
James is so right about the need for the generations to make friends with one another and learn from one another.
What a delight to listen to this wise man. I especially like the mutual respect you have.
This was wonderful I learned a lot about building a home, James was fascinating and very wise looking forward to know his story. ❤️👍😃

He's a man's man. He reminds me of my dad. His wisdom and laid bk attitude. U r in good hands. 👍
Big hugs!
Kudos to James for thinking outside of the box AND the strength to leave a community that doesn't. This shows incredible inner strength!!
I live in central Texas and have a lot of sun and heat. I'm really interested in this concrete block type of home but will it keep me cool during the summers here? I'm wanting to stay under 500sq feet too. AND I would love to hear James and Doreen's story, the teaser is interesting! ❤️
Enjoyed the vid 👍
Good points for not wanting to do "stick" homes & log cabins. One point not brought up which I have experienced: Termites 🐜
When we sell our current 🏡; we're going back to block.
Glad you have help in building your home👍😄❤️
Great to hear from James about all of his building wisdom! Thanks for the great content as always guys 😊
You can tell James is a wonderful man, a good soul!! I would let him build my house in a heartbeat!!!! Love you guys and love your videos!!
I would love hearing more about James and Doreen’s lives!!
This is so profound! I’ve been watching you alls journey for 3 years. Your commitment to yourselves, each other and the process of living authentically, while being good to the planet is a work of art. So impressed, what a magnificent blueprint! 💓
Building community and friendships while you build your home is a beautiful thing. Thanks for sharing your adventures
Yay Loved James!!! He seems so real. What you see is what you get!!!
So, James is an amazing human being. He is a blessing and I'm so glad he's here to provide knowledge and to help the younger generation. His advice is so important.
Love this guy. Good heart, gives freely, loves unconditionally. Wish every human in the world were like him.
Thank you for sharing! I look forward to watching your content no matter what it is, I always am learning from it.
James has such a great laugh! What a beautiful friendship 💙
Idea: James starts his own TH-cam channel. 🎥 🤗 I would love watching that!!
I have a log cabin in Derbyshire uk great as a go too but as a full-time home it would be way to expensive with keeping it warm seven days a week
You have definitely done the right thing listening to James, us olders definitely need to let younger ones pick our brains if the want too
So happy on your progress...in life!! Love ya both, blessings from western NY.
YES, please! An informal, sit-down conversation between the whole community, maybe?
Respect = mutual giving
So insightful! Thank you James for sharing your knowledge. They are lucky to have you as a neighbour
Loved that!!!! James is such a lovely human !! You all are GOALS!!!
Very interesting, you all are awesome.
Loved this… James is a wise man.. and you two are very fortunate to be able to learn from him …but he respects you both too.. very cool relationship!
James is a great guy, I'm happy you all found friends in one another.
Wrote a huge paragraph & just deleted it
James has a beautiful soul
Anything he's willing to share will definitely be beneficial to someone listent
You don't reach his age without a lot of wisdom
That should be heard/shared and learned from
Maybe this is a way to reach the younger generation
I would love to hear more of James & Doreen's story! What a lovely and comfortable chat to witness.
The transfer of tribal knowledge. That unwritten experience that the older generation has is just amazing. I wouldn't know what to do with out my dad's experiences to lean on. Glad you guys have found such a resource right down the road.
