How the U.S. Space Force Plans to Police The Private Space Boom

- Space is becoming even more important to the U.S. military. The U.S. Space Force has been at the front of U.S. government efforts to safeguard this key domain, and to help private industry players navigate this inherently dangerous environment.
Outer space is getting crowded, with both commercial endeavors and secretive military projects. And it's going to be up to the newest United States military branch, the Space Force, to protect American interests there.
Space launches in the U.S. have been on the rise, and participation by private companies has increased over the last decade. What's more, satellite imaging in the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia has underscored the importance of space-based assets, both commercial and military.
"We've been collaborating with private industry for years now," said Maj. Gen. Shawn N. Bratton, commander of the U.S. Space Force Space Training and Readiness Command. "And certainly we increase that activity as the presence of commercial industry increases in space."
SpaceX, Virgin Orbit and United Launch Alliance, which is a joint venture of Lockheed Martin and Boeing, are launching more and more satellites into space. And in SpaceX's case, some have increasingly ambitious projects involving reusable rockets, crewed flights and potential colonization.
"That's what really provides us the edge over any other country in the world," said U.S. Rep. Salud Carbajal, D-Calif., a member of the Space Force Caucus in Congress. "We really have a great partnership between our Department of Defense and those companies who make their own personal investments in technology for their own economic interests, of course, and we are able to spur that innovation"

People laughed at the Space Force, but having a more proper organizational structure for things that were already being done makes sense
As the video mentions, there was already a Space Command under the U.S. Airforce, so let's hope these entities can be merged to reduce costs and improve efficiency.

@@robertortiz-wilson1588 Air & Navy are two different domains using different technologies. Air & low orbit space are domains that are not poles apart, and utilize same protocols and technologies.
logistics...nothing beats american logistics and adding more structure with the creation of space force is an excellent idea. it means the government is getting serious about space especially with all their investments up there.
I can't wait for 4th Ranger Battalion to be recreated so there will actually be Space Rangers!

MobiusCoin: Sadly but Truly, Most Americans, both Men and Women, whether Military Forces, Veteran, or Civilian, have no clue what The F--- U.S. Space Force ( Department of The Air Force) is, and much more important than that, what The U.S. Space Force is not. There is not even a Space Force Reserve and Space Force National Guard, much less, a SPACESOC ( Space Force Special Operations Command) ,and , the Deltas that will stand up Special Operations Guardians, both Active Duty and Reserve Component, to cooperate alongside The Army,Air Force,Navy , Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.
As a sci fi fan of coz I am excited about force in space, but I really hope we figure out the space debris problem first before any fighting or else we may trap ourselves on earth really quickly
Use the existing satellites as a primary planetary defense system, while recycle the old satellites in orbit
@@VoidSpace9 That might be a bit hard to do, old satellites that don’t work literally are dead and don’t work. If we can find a way to repair old satellite in space without needing too much effort, your idea would be a good one.

Rocket delivery is interesting. SpaceX rockets can "land" safety somewhere going say from the U.S to Europe. But how do you track it, allow specific lanes and what do you do in case of failure? Because eventually someday something is going to fail, and now you have a rocket & cargo that's out of control going haywire or exploded and raining debris everywhere.
But a really interesting concept. SpaceX - Cargo Division. Delivering Pizza intercontinentally in 30 minutes or less!
I hear you, assuming this isn’t secretly being developed already, I suspect after a proof of concept, it will be a minimal use (10 or more per year?) where mostly governments and a couple Fortune 500 companies will use it. I imagine say in an emergency, they will create a rocket field (like an air field) to receive which will be in minimally populated areas. I imagine they will coordinate with the national aviation authority of the destination countries. Elon Musk is also creating barges that are essentially space ports that can be placed in local waters of cities. It’s all manageable, but first starship has to get past many milestones. If the ship reaches production for anything besides Starlink delivery before 2028(ish). I’ll be surprised.
Don't forget Starlink it was instrumental in Ukraine and still is. Without it we likely would get very little news from the area, since it is one of the few if not only internet that the Russians have not taken down that can be used in Ukraine.

In space, it's hard to separate civil and military apart. US is (out of big 3) one of the most defined divided between civil and military in space apart from EU.

You don’t need to control 100% of the oceans to protect it, you just need to protect the ports, straits, canals etc and you’re basically 95% there.
Same with space, there’s only 8 plants, and a couple hundred moons in the solar system. And we aren’t even really concerned about them all. Mainly the earth and moon right now.
Also space is completely hostile to people compared to oceans, people will be incentivized even more to help each other.

Space Force in one form or another was proposed as far back as the 1980s, when there was talk about giving US Air Force Space Command more funding and autonomy. The fact that Space Force has been almost exclusively associated with President Trump has been a gross mischaracterization, from both sides of the aisle.
