So I wanted to wait until morning before posting this comment, I literally sat on my laptop writing this. For starters I wanted to say that I am so glad that I was able to find this entire video via TH-cam, I think this was an excellent conversation and this platform is simple yet effective. For me, I’m from one of the roughest neighborhoods in Atlanta, GA and my community only knew of one thing about gay men or what gay is in general. It’s the typical troupe of hyper feminine guys that are a little loud and obnoxious. And of course on the sexual side, they just suck and take dick in the ass. Coming into today’s world, people in my community now have a word for that, BOTTOMS and that’s all that they know so for most of us coming of age, being a bottom was all we knew and at 19 most of the guys who had the knowledge or who were the elders were just trying to fuck us. Coming through that I have had the luxury to explore what I like outside of being a bottom and be able to break “hetero-norms” that were based upon how I appeared to the outside world. Sadly that didn’t start happening for me until I moved into the suburbs of that same city. Despite my height and lengthy hair and how I sound, I was able to venture outside of the box that people who looked just like me put me in. I do believe there is a double standard between tops and bottoms, just like the straight world, promiscuity rewards men and damns women. So for us, the power goes to the top and the shame or damming goes to the bottoms. To reiterate Jordan’s point we degrade or devalue all things feminine and celebrate everything masculine. I do believe there is an element of internalize homophobia that we use as a weapon against each other. I do believe that we try to make other men feel less than by leaning into what is deemed a “submissive” role to elevate ourselves. To that end we’re reinforcing an idea that masculinity and being able to pass as straight is the goal and is what is attractive.
