  • Mr Pelargonium has more queries about cuttings than any other topic so with the mid summer cutting season in full swing he talks us through the processes he uses for success. This video (Part Two) concentrates on cutting back Regals to get cuttings in late summer.

Is there any hope for real leggy growth? I didn’t know when or how to prune and never did. Only dead heading and watering. I have many pots of leggy plants growing green but terrible aesthetically.

Just cut them down and see what happens. They will regrow but some varieties are naturally long jointed so may always have a leggy habit.

Hi Thinking about keeping my regals going for next year. Watched this video, but very reluctant to take the flowers off now/soon to promote new growth for cuttings. Wondering about keeping the whole plant and doing the root pruning method later to keep the plant small (limited windowsill space to overwinter). What are the pros and cons of cuttings v keeping the whole plant and which do you recommend?
I know you are busy just now but hope you might get chance to reply sometime! Many thanks.

Oh gosh that is a good question. Doing the cut-back method will ultimately give you bushier plants but you will still need a bit more room than over wintering small newly potted cuttings. So the choice is yours really. Maybe do some with each method and see how you go. D

It takes a number of years and constant cutting back in order to make the side shoots break out from the sides of each branch.

Is that white fly all over the leaves>

    • @thepagsociety

No, the bits are far too large compared to whitefly. From what I can see it’s just plant debris, probably stigma breakages from the flowers. David

Hi, yes take the cuttings at you coolest time. Regals prefer cooler conditions ideally so keep them in the shade and outside during your hot periods. David
