@SnakeWorksStudio I think it came about as a reaction to the rising alienation brought on by increasing computerization and political backlash. If I remember rightly, it was a far more common sight in Britain than over here in America.

That round thing on the guardsman's shoulder reminds me of a round bit they had on medieval armor. Its to cover the vulnderable area between the shoulder armor and the breastplate.
The stylized A is a common punk meme from the time (A for Anarchy) but this one has a resemblance to the Crass logo ( while looking nothing like it) which is appropriate because, His hands are big he's got big hands, BIG HANDS BIG HANDS BIG HANDS!
Always love your old hammer vids! In the military, the hat the orks are seen wearing is often called a field cap or patrol cap… also, the guardsman with the circular “badge” looks like it may be what is called a besagew, which was common during the days of plate armor… and for the fellow with the “A” belt, the symbol is often called the “anarchy symbol” in punk circles but may have origins with a particular band from the older days
6:25 The asymmetrical shoulder pads on some of the Imperial Guardsmen (also on a couple of the old Adventurer and Pirate models) make sense for heavy weapons, but I'm pretty sure it was mostly "just because it looks cool".
In 2nd edition, I liked the description of the Orks as violent psychopaths. My issue was that the art and miniatures all seemed to have a goofy grin on their faces. I loved the 3rd edition Ork box set because the miniatures looked fierce and vicious.
Great video. We need more random labyrinth songs, more graffiti and slogans on our 40k and more old school 40k art flair today!!! It all had so much more fun and imagination
That 1st edition art is funny cause it looks more punk and free, leaving much to the artists imagination, while they were creating all that early version of 40k universe. Lore has strong vibes from brit comic mag 2.000 AD and I love that.
It's all subjective, I suppose, but you can't hate on the correct pronunciation of "arbite" while simultaneously referring to "cat-ak-ans" as "cat-a-chans". The latter sounding rather like a cutesy anime character from the 70's with gigantic eyeballs or something.
I don't care for the Blood Angels and successor chapters because I don't find vampires exciting. If I were going to make a "scary" Marine chapter, I'd base it on the Cenobites from the first 2 Hellraiser movies.
(ahem) North American non-wargamer here. Is calling it "War Hammer Forty Thousand" instead of "Warhammer 40 K" what you island folk refer to as "taking the p*ss"? Just curious.

The big A on his belt is the Anarchy symbol. It was an extremely common sight on clothes and and as graffiti in the 80s.
Do you know where it came from?
@@SnakeWorksStudiogiven the time and place it would be UK punk culture, think sex pistols

I have one tattooed on my hip.
The old art is awesome. Love the graffiti on the armour. I would draw on my helmet back in 2004 in Afghanistan.

The big circles at the shoulder joint are besague which were used to cover that opening (you cant tightly plate the under arm there)
'No one wants to play the side getting beaten all the time'
Guard players: :(
Shoutout to all the Guard players having their arses handed to them!

Thanks! Do you know the name of the particular band?
@ from what I could find, the band Crass popularized it as a punk symbol in the 70s-80s
14:34 I believe that hairstyle is named "The Mr T Experience"
Damn I miss him! Was that your fave piece ?

I'm thinking the odd "muzzle flash" is actually a rocket contrail.

I always loved the old ork war paint on the face!
We need to see it on Ork models nowadays!
I think the picture on the wanted poster is the guy sitting next to it.

That first ork in the pic with the bionic space marine looked like he had a thousand yard stare. Seen too many bad ork pics I'd guess.
Old art will do that to you!

The works versus marines is by Ian Miller. Very much his style.
The guardsman illustration looks very reminiscent of strontium dog from 2000ad
I need to look 2000ad up, was it a good comic?
@@SnakeWorksStudio yes it has all sorts of scifi stories, games workshop borrowed quite extensively from 2000ad for 40k
Hm, I thought the gesture he made for chest bursters was for some other kind of burster...
A back burster?

I always thought it was 'Aaargh-Bites' too, (like R White's Lemonade)

Centurions reference, what! ❤
You remember them too! I thought I had dreamt them as nobody remembers them!
A scumbag is a slang term for a condom where I’m from…
Where is that??
maybe its a second axe is hilariously perfect for 40k
Everyone needs a back up Axe right?

A good idea! What do you dislike about vampires?
@SnakeWorksStudio Vampires are just a bit twee. There are other creatures out there much scarier.
