This was my introduction to Touhou as a whole, it got me to watch the first four episodes of Memories of Phantasm to learn more about the characters in the game, and I was reintroduced to them in the mobile game Lost Word. I haven't had the opportunity to dive much deeper, but even when I do, I don't think that Sakuya, Lady Remilia, and the other residents of the Scarlet Devil Mansion will leave my heart anytime soon. I've become very fond of them all.
Luna Nights is not only one of the best Touhou fangames I've played (and as a huge Touhou fan who's been into the series for at least 7 years I've played many) but it's also one of the best Metroidvania's I've ever played as well. Team Ladybug did an excellent job incorporating the bullet hell gameplay of the original games with classic Metroidvania gameplay.
One of the best games I've ever played. Phenomenal boss fights, a great soundtrack, and genius use of time as a mechanic. The perfect Sakuya Izayoi simulator.
03:31 All but three characters: Hieda no Akyuu, she's the manga-only character, first appeared in Perfect Memento in Strict Sense; Nitori Kawashiro from Touhou 10 Mountain of Faith; Marisa Kirisame from Touhou 2 Story of Eastern Wonderland then became the deuteragonist of the Touhou series.
It is so amazing to see someone giving this underrated gem some much needed love and respect. I hope it gets talked about more, because even if it is small, it's amazing.
This was honestly my first exposure to any of the touhou games, and I loved it it's what got me to start listening to the music from the series. I can't wait for the Castlevania homage coming out this summer 😎
People talk about some of the best Metroidvania games out there and I feel like this game almost never comes up. It’s incredibly underrated, with great gameplay and incredible music. Your character feels so OP but so do the bosses and it feels like two bosses fighting each other whenever you go up against one. My only “complaint” is that I wish the game was a bit longer, the experience is over far too soon. Still, legitimately one of my favorite Metroidvanias out there, if not one of my favorite games in general. Also it’s a great way to step into some of Touhou’s music and characters! Highly recommend!
I think it’s because the metroidvania elements are a little underwhelming; there’s not much backtracking, exploration is limited, and the game is fairly linear. However, the combat, bosses, music, and especially the mechanics are so good it makes up for it. Kinda reminds me of the messenger, which is one of my favorite games ever. It’s also a metroidvania, and I’d consider the metroidvania elements alright at best, but everything else is so incredible I can get over it.
not the parrot everyone else, but as a massive fan of the genre, this is genuinely one of my favorite Metroidvania/Search Action games. The lesser emphasis on exploration is honestly really refreshing to me, as other games in the genre sometimes tend to be a little TOO exploration heavy, to the point that it just gets tedious.
I'm really glad to see touhou fangames covered, they dont get a lot of recognition because of that touhou tag in the beginning. But there are some real hidden gems there. Theres honestly a game in each genre that touhou fans have tackled. From boardgame style, to rts, to racer. Thanks for the review!
I really can't stress how much I love this game's art style. The pixel art is gorgeous and the little details all over the place, like raindrops slowing to a crawl or stopping entirely during Sakuya's time shenanigans or the mesmerising spiral of Marisa's Master Spark when time is slowed is just plain wonderful. Game's got flaws, for sure, but it's a downright masterpiece and I'd happily recommend it to anyone.
This game is constructed as a stage by stage game with a boss fight at the end of each stage. My best guess is that stages are connected to satisfy the modern demand of metroid-vania formula. I'm glad it's that way as I had fun looking for the extras which obviously you didn't look for as you said "the hidden places are obvious". This game is what I would call "Elite Gaming" the real escence of a videogame. Check the other Ladybug hit "Record of Lodoss War - Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth" same concept new mecanics and epic boss fights
"over 50 unofficial fangames across every genre imaginable" ... I mean, you're not wrong, but that's a ludicrous underrepresentation. There are THOUSANDS and still counting, both in the doujin and indie scenes. Luna Nights is at least the first completely outright touhou metroidvania-type game, but it's not even the first true touhou castlevania-style game (or the first metroid-inspired one either). For reference, it's worth mentioning that there are AT LEAST 6 touhou fangames off the top of my head inspired by ace attorney, AT LEAST three inspired by Senko no Ronde of all things (and even more with similar gameplay systems, which is pretty wild for a subgenre as entirely niche as "shmup-fighting game hybrids" even for a shmup series), several developers have made touhou fangame series inspired by other series like Mystery Dungeon or Etrian Odyssey, Paper Mario, Valkyrie Profile, so on and so forth... Never mind every genre imaginable, you can really count on there probably being a fangame for every SERIES you can think of too, short of fangames themselves. Mario Party? It's Marisa Party. Mario KART? There are others, but try Super Marisa Kart, or Gensou Skydrift if you want something more modern (it's honestly one of my favourite kart racing games in recent memory too). Fire Emblem? There are very probably more fangames with FE gameplay than actual FE entries. Tetris? Absolutely, and every other puzzle game under the sun surely has countless ones too (especially ones like puyo puyo, and if jon reads this, yes also panel de pon). Mega Man? Plenty of those too, including at least one Mega Man X-inspired one from the composer of Luna Nights himself! Anyway yeah, that aside the map was my big issue with Luna Nights too honestly so I'm glad you also brought it up. Great game anyway, way more polished than that MMX-like game I just mentioned, but it being so rough around the edges despite its polish is what honestly makes me want to just play the real "touhouvania" (or Koumajou Densetsu, soon to be Koumajou Remilia with a remastered global release coming in a couple of months...) instead. Or really just, most other Team Ladybug-related games instead.
For Paper Mario, the only one I can say for sure is the unfortunately never completed Paper Tenko. I'm not ruling out the possibility that there are maybe a couple of others but nothing else is coming to mind unfortunately. Also worth mentioning Touhou Shoujo Tale of Beautiful Memories based off Super Mario RPG though, as well as Three Fairies Hoppin' Flappin Great Journey (i forget the original title which presumably sounds less dumb than that) which I personally feel takes very moderate inspiration from Paper Mario (but even that's maybe a bit debatable). So maybe a bit of a stretch there idk.
For Fire Emblem uhhhh the ones I'm aware of are the various games from Chiyuudou (I think in total they did 5 specifically FE-likes, as well as a bunch based off others like nobunaga's ambition, harvest moon, atelier... Naming the FE ones specifically, there was East Chemblem and its sequel Seirensen, Gensou no Keifu and its side/gaiden entry Cirno Senki, and lastly Hifuu Bouenkyou). I'm also pretty sure Disfact made a couple and bundled them together for a Steam release (Senran Meisuishu Tactics). There is also a literal Touhou Emblem series from Neronsoft I don't really know about, and apparently there is also another actual Touhou Emblem fangame series which seems to be comprised of romhacks (not actually sure, haven't played). Finally, one last one I'm aware of is Story of a Lost Sky from Feathered Melody, which draws inspiration from SRPGs in general and cites Fire Emblem specifically among them. And I'm pretty sure that's just the tip of the iceberg since I never really tried looking for them before.
I keep trying to post my response for ace attorney ones specifically but it keeps not posting properly for some reason so i'll just keep it short and say there's actually like 9 that count from Suicayasan you can find on vndb and stuff, mostly in the Gyakuten Touhou series. Most of them are spinoffs or crossover parodies though. And there's also Hikage Sabaiban from myohu-kai, which is super crossover parody-ey. Gyakuten Saiban was really one of those kinds of games that was a popular template for doujin fangames in the mid-00s tbh, a few other circles ended up making their own multi-entry series based off other works like Haruhi, Higurashi, multiple based off Maria-sama ga Miteru, FF7 and so on, all of which I'm pretty sure you can likewise find on vndb if you search gyakuten. also don't play the ff7 one
I heavily reccomend Rabi Ribi for another Bullet Hell Metroidvania hybrid, that game is actually heavily inspired by Touhou and pays a lot of tribute to the franchise. It's a real hidden gem, once you get past the cringy writing and overly done fanservice what's left is a Metroidvania with spectacular combat and exploration, a banging soundtrack, and an absurd amount of potential gameplay time and replay value if you want to truly dedicate yourself and do everything. Real hidden gem.

Oh hey, this team released a very fun shmup called (yes that's a real name) DRAINUS a few days ago. As someone who sucks at shmups, but enjoys all the action they present - very big recommend, bullet drain system, checkpoints, leveling your ship up and infinite continues make it very beginner friendly, like, I'm still bad at it, but I finished the story on Normal and training to do more. Team Ladybug is up there for me with Treasure in making good action games with a fun layer of in-depth mechanics, and unlike Treasure's titles, they all are pretty approachable.

This game makes me wish there were more fast-paced action games with time stopping/slowing mechanics. Getting the hang of the strengths and weaknesses of time control in this game and going toe to toe with the crazy bosses in this was some of the most fun I've had in a game. Luna nights is good starting point to touhou because, you don't need prior knowledge of the series to play the game. I from here you can branch off to other games. For me I would definitely recommend Fantasy Maiden Wars series when its fully translated (either wait for the complete box edition to be translated or buy the 4 games that is somewhat translated via fan translations), if you love SRPGs like Super Robot Wars, due to series uses the plots of many of the touhou games to make a cohesive story that introduce new characters properly.
yeah, I personally went straight from Luna Nights to Touhou 6. While nothing can really prepare you for your first bullet hell, I feel like Luna Nights is the best semi-introduction to that concept as you can get in a game from a different genre.
I'll be honest in that I have never heard of Touhou before, but this was an interesting video. Don't know if I will ever get a chance to play the game as I am mainly a console gamer, but the info is nice and I enjoyed your honest opinion of the game. Metroidvania is a genre that I love, so any new looks at games and hidden gems is always welcome. There’s another very popular Touhou fangame duology in the style of classic Castlevania called Koumajou Densetsu. The first game is supposed to get an official Switch release soon. th-cam.com/video/WcKzfhgrqfE/w-d-xo.html
playing Metroid Prime for the first time it's pretty fun then I'm going to play 2 and 3 going to be really fun I'm going to try 100% all of them🙂🙂😄😄😄✨🎆🎇✨🎇
I've played a lot of metroidvanias. I can't think of one at the tip of the tongue which would make for a good exploration of the genre, aside from the usual suspects. At least, not one with an interesting a story as being part of touhou. Maybe brazilian metroidvanias Dandara and Unsighted? I but I haven't played those and maybe unsighted is still too fresh on the audience's minds?
This is a great game and if I had any complaints is that it's to short and the reimu fight is kinda bullshit. I do have to get around to getting that record of the lodos war game they made.
Touhou Luna Nights plot is a bit more of a dickish moment then one might realize. After beating the secret/extra final boss, Remi (or rather Nitori) reveals that, contrary to what she said before, the world was made for her younger, destructive powerhouse of a sister but because she didn't have the correct resources to make the world itself possible she used her own sister's personal collection of gems and Flan rightfully gets *pissed!* Because not only did her sister pull a Marisa and stole Flan's own collection of hard earned gems, but she then had the gull to have *Sakuya* of all people run through the fabricated Gensokyo Remi created to test the artificial world which resulted in Flan thinking Sakuya and the rest of her family was having fun even though there were multiple times where Sakuya stated otherwise and wanted to get back to the real Gensokyo so she could resume her duties as the head maid of the Scarlet Devil Mansion. (Although I wouldn't be surprised if a part of Sakuya's mind was enjoying herself.) And so the main reason why Nitori is asking you to trade Gems for money to obtain extra items and more ammo and time for your Time Stop (During the Time Stop you have a *very* limited supply of Knives to throw at enemies and bosses which gets increased throughout the adventure via exploring every nook and cranny for upgrades to both the Time Stop's time limit and the number of knives you can throw during the Time Stop.) is because that's not the real Nitori, that's Flandre in disguise who somehow managed to steal one of Nitori's mechs and snuck in the false Gensokyo to take her stolen gems back. The real Nitori only appears a select few times which includes the extra ending itself. During the final boss if you refuse to sell any or very little of the gems you've collected Flan will comment on how weak she is which will also make some attacks easier to avoid. But still, the game is fun, it's just the conflict with Flan could've been avoided if Remi just used her brain more often and thought about the drawbacks of using something her sister held very dear to her. But that's Gensokyo for ya, a world filled to the brim with folks that don't do a whole lot of thinking. It's a weird type of paradise I'll say that much.
Derrick talking about Touhou isn't something I was expecting today. But this is a very welcome surprise! Luna Nights is a great game.

This is a great game and if I had any complaints is that it's to short and the reimu fight is kinda bullshit. I do have to get around to getting that record of the lodos war game they made.
ooooooooooo
(Although I wouldn't be surprised if a part of Sakuya's mind was enjoying herself.)
And so the main reason why Nitori is asking you to trade Gems for money to obtain extra items and more ammo and time for your Time Stop (During the Time Stop you have a *very* limited supply of Knives to throw at enemies and bosses which gets increased throughout the adventure via exploring every nook and cranny for upgrades to both the Time Stop's time limit and the number of knives you can throw during the Time Stop.) is because that's not the real Nitori, that's Flandre in disguise who somehow managed to steal one of Nitori's mechs and snuck in the false Gensokyo to take her stolen gems back.
