I'm a survivor main, and I feel killer has a slight edge, I'm able to far more easily have a good game as killer than I am as a survivor whether it be in solo que or with my friends who have much more seat time than me. It should also be noted I play Wesker and xeno so I don't really use bad killers, but I also haven't felt the need to prestige a single killer yet where as I have about 20 prestieged survivors and still feel like I'm lacking perk combos that can really help me hold my own against most killer situations. It's not nearly as bad as most people say but I'd say it still leans killer.
I play both sides and think the game is survivor sided but these days it's only because of the maps it's just too easy to run forward and not get caught
@@slothman4631I play both sides and I don't feel like I need perks as a survivor. But as killer some slowdown feels necessary with most killers. And yes, I challenged myself with it. Also I think this game is as balanced as a asymetrical game can be in my opinion.
I'm not so interested in whether the game is balanced or not, more-so whether it's fun. DBD was extremely unbalanced the past few years -- and it was the most fun that people ever had. The game design didn't make sense, but that also created a sense of goofy-ness and silliness that got a lot of people hooked into the game. Pallets and maps were extremely survivor sided, and as a killer you had to work overtime to get kills -- so I do understand why BHVR has been moving in the direction to make things feel fairer on both sides, I really do. Playing killer should be fun and not so stressful. That being said, I think the fundamental problem is that the game designers have no clue which direction to go. Are we building a competitive game, like a League of Legends, where skill expression and knowledge of the game will dominate? Or are we building a fun party game, where you and your friends can be chased by a spooky killer for 20 minutes? The problem is that they want to have it both ways, and what we end up with is having neither. This game is clearly not just a "party game" for most players, but it also doesn't enough elements of competitive titles either. Instead, it offers some traits of either genre, and makes for a much worse experience for either side looking to enjoy their version of the game. If your goal is to win, but you're matched with a Meg whose only goal is to never be seen by the killer and hides in the corner, you are fundamentally playing two different versions of the game. One more thing I think is relevant: the game can never be killer sided for too long, or it will lose popularity. I'm not saying this bc I'm a hardcore survivor main or anything -- but because from a game design perspective, if you make the game fun for 1/5 people in the match, you are making it unfun for the other 4/5 people in the match. Everyone who plays, does so because they want to "win" -- if the wincon for a killer is a 4K, then 4 people just lost so that 1 person can win. That's not a sustainable design in the long term. The challenge DBD's designers are faced with is how do they make sure players generally have fun, and not just on one side. I don't have the answer to that but it doesn't seem like they've met this goal in this current iteration, and I'm personally not confident in them making decisive and positive changes to the game.
The problem with the game's balance has nothing to do with perks or even killer powers(except Nurse. she is broken.) it's the maps and it is BHVR's map design philosophy. Some maps have so many pallets that you are just fucked if you play an m1 killer(The Game, Garden of Joy, Badham, etc.) and some maps are full of dead zones that fuck the survivors if the killer isn't C tier or below(Haddonfield, Rotten Fields, etc.) If they could just reach a middle ground on having a reasonable amount of pallets on each map with most of them being playable on both sides, then the game would be in a better spot.
Oh hey, I participated in this poll. I thought you did a great job summarizing everyone's responses, and really appreciate this type of content, as I feel there's a lack of data on player's thoughts regarding complicated topics like these.
Saying that the game has become more balanced but less fun is probably the most accurate way to put it. Stuff like pain res feels more balanced for survivors but in the killer side it not only feels unrewarding for finding a previously hooked survivor hidding or just wanting to create more pressure, but also pretty useless in the gran scheme of the game as you may be able to kill at least one survivor you aren't helping the overall macro game cause you can't get value out of pain res. And, I think I said this in the survey, the fact that we need to rely on something like pain res or even ruin is a big problem that has been in the game for ages in the killer side. This idea that the killer's presence needs to be felt everyone in the map to at least somewhat pressure the gens falls completely flat with characters like clown that can't affect areas of the game that aren't were he's standing right now, thats why killers like Artist, Larry and even Unknown are fun now a days cause they can either teleport or affect survivors far away. I feel like modern dbd forces you to have that type of mentally because pain res isn't that good anymore and ruin has been shot in the basement for over 4 years now, and while the previously mentioned killers can get away with it, what is poor old myers gonna do about a gen that's on narnia? Killer's value, in terms of fun or hwo good they are, depends on either been deadly at chase or having map control for far away, so when you play an M1 killer you NEED pain res and all that stuff, and when you play other killers you still kinda only run pain res cause every other playstile has been butchered or is just mememy. BTW no Ace gaucho skin 2/10 game
I'm not going to write a long reply because I already made my own 10 minute video talking about this, but thank you for taking the time to do this research. I've had my own suspicions that the player base was starting to recognize the game becoming more balanced at it's core, but I don't think they recognize the impact that is going to have long term. Hopefully BHVR can recognize "perfect" balance means boring and finds ways to keep the game fresh.
Everyone who claims this Game is Killer sided is completely delusional! The Game should be balanced 50/50! 50% Killer, 50 % Survivors! Means every Survivor should have 12,5% Power! How they balance is every player counts 20%! THATS where the mistake of the balance of this Game lays. Asymetrical means that the side with lower player count has more power! But in this Game every Surv can easy take on the Killer on his own! That is not how it should be!
If you play soloQ, the game is killer sided. If you play with friends, the game is survivor sided. Overall, the game is pretty survivor sided, especially when considering how map offerings come into play and how the most survivor sided map by far isn't as strong as the most killer sided map
(Casual player bias) it used to feel killer sided to me when I played killer. Even swf with op shit seemed easy counter-able if I was good. OVERALL based in games I play, it feels balanced on both sides regardless of solo q. I just don’t get the mentality of “because you play one side more means you automatically think the other side is easier” honestly. It’s more about “how you play” and “what skill level” than trying to say other people lack skill or whatever. Mfs whining about “oh killer mains think survivor sided” or “oh survivor mains think killer sided” yet I feel like whichever side I play more at the time is easier. Even as a horrible player.
I made such an over complicated way of saying people can have opinions independent of what side they play on geez but yeah. It feels sided to whatever side if you abuse things
im a fairly new player. i started playing like 4-5 weeks ago and i have about 120 hours. i can 100% say, picking up killer is way easier to be "successful" on. Killer in low mmr is so easy, i legit felt bad for the survivor players. but i reached iri 1 and since i won a lot early i think my mmr is not so bad right now. because i play vs much better survivors and i also play was premades a lot! And killer is so hard in those matches, i kinda have to resort to tunneling or slugging, if i want to have a chance vs those. as survivor on the other hand it was the other way around. playing with other low mmr survivors is such a pain, they all run into the killer and get slugged on the 1st down. they all just want to loop the killer but get downed in 10 seconds, when they watched too many ayrun videos. they do the worst unhooks, sandbag or hide all game in lockers and corners. but the higher the mmr went the easier the games became. if my new payer opinon counts for anything. i think it actually is fairly balanced. the problem is, killers try to abide to low mmr survivor "rules" like no slugging, camping, tunneling, etc. just to not get called toxic, when its legit needed to win depending on the situation. if i see 3 leons with flashlights in the lobby im not gonna pick people up a lot unless its super safe. but then i get called toxic for slugging. when they rush 3 gens in the first 2 minutes because i chase someone for too long and then decide to tunnel someone out, i get called toxic. like this dont make sense. the survivors are allowed to try hard but the killer isnt. if we talk about low mmr, survivor is a lot harder than killer and i feel like on high mmr its the other way around.
I completely agree. I'd say I'm similar to your situation, I have around 140 hours and as soon as I reached iri 1 on survivor, the other survivors somehow gained common sense and the games were going smoother (although there are exceptions sometimes...) but on killer it's so much different than that. These days I decided to main hag because she seems really fun and the traps are super cool. Long story short, It's borderline exhausting trying to main her since I get put up with sweaty survivors that pick up flashlights the last second before the trial starts so you can't get lightborn. I'm honestly afraid of not using corrupt intervention just because of the crazy gen rush in most matches. After a killer game, I honestly need to take a breather to recover the energy lost trying to deal with these type of issues.
@@bluefiremoon1158 yea i feel that. i started out as legion because it seemed to be a good killer to get into that side of the game. but vs good survivors its so hard to get wins with them. i kinda started playing spirit as an S Tier because i felt like i had no chance vs these better survivors on a lower tier killer :D but im glad, im not alone with this perception. these game are INTENSE, when the survivors know what they are doing.
This is pretty spot on. as a 2000 hour killer i've more or less been conditioned to tunnel or camp very little if not almost never. For a long time i've been trying Variety builds and basically trying to be a build artist and get creative, just to keep sane and find new effective playstyles. I've tried all sorts of things from a mix of early and endgame perks to trying to make a basement artist build (Which was almost viable, but the issue is the birds you place are too difficult/inconsistent when it comes to hitting survivor on basement stairs for me). Honestly, i've been pretty frustrated with how recently every time i've been trying it's been proving ineffective when creating more or less almost any build i deem creative or interesting. It really DOES feel like dbd as of this patch suddenly reached it's boiling point where the Majority of killer Perks and Tactics are just completley unviable against fairly competent players. Or Any Team with a Swf be it 2 3 or 4. I pretty much have to rewire myself to stop being creative with my builds and trying to go off meta, or to at least condition it to be more objective or anti meta, because being creative and selecting whatever perks you want just isn't Viable anymore. not easily, at least. its very, VERY painful. Something else worth mentioning is the NATURE of the games balance. it may be balanced, but some videos like otzdarva's experiment bears to mention that in some sense it might be only because both sides have some REALLY strong/busted stuff and thus what "side" in terms of balance is on shifts rapidly and wildly from game to game, especially with map rng, at the very peak of perks or addons or offerings, Meaning anyone who wants to play "fair" like me, misses out on using those things. I am in pain :
I resonate heavily with this. It's so much harder to get into survivor if you don't have a dedicated team, which most people don't. It's part of why I prefer killer: My success depends on MY skill, and part of why I'm scared of 2v8 becoming the more popular mode.
@Baby-Blue-102 the gane has no balance in the traditional sense if you play nurse you're capable of winning every match you play if you play ghostface there are matches that no matter how well you play you were never going to win so for weak killers the game is horribly horrendously monumentally survivor sided but for strong killers its fairly balanced
All due respect, the comment about Billy - "New Billy turned Billy from a beloved killer to a menace" is wild. The accurate statement would be "Beloved by survivors.". Nobody played Billy before he was buffed. He wasn't beloved by anyone - except survivors. Because he was so insanely unfun to play as, and insanely easy to outplay just by running in circles and predropping pallets.
@@CreditR01 you haven't seen that many, then Most I know, with thousands upon thousands of hours and chainsaw downs, switched to blight cause he was so miserable. I'm calling bs on your comment.
Im sure that many not complaining about every change Billy got New Billy is fun and fine Overheat Billy can be frustating expecially if he miss, he recover fast that making loops only for 5% of playerbase (high mmr)
A creator who's inspired me somewhat is MrTatorHead who runs no perks on survivor and killer. I don't go perkless, but like as survivor I favour altruistic off-meta perks like BT or We're Gonna Live Forever, and as killer I just try to give off-meta perks some love in my builds. Personally I'm just trying to treat the game more casually because the game's always gonna have balance issues, and I don't want my enjoyment of the game to be tied too heavily to winning my matches. I love getting value out of stupid/niche perks like Leverage or Borrowed Time
Base killer is balanced, base survivor is also balanced but needs basic quality of life changes like being able to see your teammates perks, a potential ping system and base-kit bond. While basic killer is balanced, some killers are just obnoxious to play against. Buffed nemesis is the biggest example. His main issue of no map pressure due to lack of mobility wasn't fixed, instead the devs made his chase even more powerful even though nemesis was unfun to play against since there was no counterplay besides hoping the killer missed. So nemesis still has the same problems but is more obnoxius in chase. Billy has been overtuned massively. The maps are also a problem because you can go from the most survivor sided map like badham to the most killer sided map like haddonfield. You have coldwind maps that have literally no pallets on them. Behaviour either makes giant maps with garbage pallets or tiny maps with no pallets, no in-between. Perk wise I'll say they're the most balanced they've been
@@lillipton8838 change my mind but survivors focus should be the perks, bcs thats where the fun is, no wonder why mft and old dh was popular. And for killers, they should make the power and addons fun, not the perks bcs thats the WHOLE point of playing killer.
My god, build in bond and ping that would be so awful, it's already so hard to keep survivor down or injured without then healing in 5 sec when dissapearing. Killer need base kit regression on hooks that's for sure. Hooking is not rewarded. Also, nemy is really fun to play against, idk where you come from.
@Kazrain973 yeah I also think nemy is fun to face and I have NO CLUE what they mean about maps the maps are mostly pretty horrendously survivor sided lmfao
Nice to see the results of the poll I participated in ! Out of curiosity, is lery mentionned a lot as an unbalanced map ? Except 3gens scenarios I feel like this is the best indoor map they ever designed tbh, so I'm not sure if anything else is mentionned
True! I get shit on every once in a while by a coordinated swf. I'm usually a 4K maniac, but these dudes made sure I finished the game with 1 hook 😂 @D-Boy22
hey carni, I wanted to throw my two cents into the ring. In game design, there's a saying: "Given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game". now this isn't 100% fact, but i think it's incredibly apt in dbd's case. as a game designer you want to best align what is the most enjoyable experience you can create with what will be the most optimal path to victory/the goal of your game. I don't think this is a new phenomena in DBD, its something most games, especially PVP ones, have to contend with at some level. I don't think DBD is unbalanced, more so that what is fun for your average player, will end up hurting your chances of winning versus playing to the metagame and having an even playing field, which due to how unchanging DBD's meta's tend to be, gets pretty boring after awhile. I personally think that alot of balance discussions kind of fall flat on their face for this reason, I don't think peoples win percentages is really the issue, it's the fact that getting those win percentages just doesn't feel good. I'm not saying they have to make backpack nemmy the best build in the game unironically (its already the best and we all know deep down), but with how many perks and killers and maps there are, its a real buzzkill to see the same stuff over and over again for what appears to be the same reason, every killer feels better to play when you have more time to play inefficiently, and every survivor feels better to play when you don't have to worry about being instantly sacrificed out of the game and downed in 2s. Chaos shuffle and the meta shakeup were so popular because they gave breathing room for creative perk usage even if in my not so humble opinion they were both deeply flawed. This took me like 4 rewrites, im such a nerd. anyway, good video carni 👍
When I first started the game I felt significantly more stressed as survivor than killer, but this has changed drastically as i get motr experienced. Im a hardcore killer main, I barely play survivor- and I would 100% say the game is killer sided. But playing killer is strictly more stressful nowadays for me because the mental toll that losses take is far more significant- this being primarily due to toxicity and the general attitude the community has towards being aggressive to both sides. If I try my absolute hardest to win, which I often do as this is how I have fun, I will probably get bagged and hate messaged if I lose. And if I decide to play more chill, I'll probably still get tbagged and hate messaged if I lose. Knowing that a loss on my end means that I'm gonna get treated like shit at the end of the match makes the game so much more stressful for me- because now I feel so much worse about losing and trying to improve. Suddenly I feel like I HAVE to try my absolute hardest and win so I don't feel like shit at the end, and chill killer matches to relax inbetween trying to win becoming far less enjoyable. I also get toxicity from killers when I play surv, but for some reason I care far less in those instances- maybe because the loss isn't entirely on me and it's only one other person mad at me. All this culminates in me feeling like I need to win due to the stress and emotional toll that losses take, which leads to me feeling like I need to bring the best perks and addons I can, tunnel and camp, and generally just diminishes the overall satisfaction I get from the game. Which is all to say: I think that the toxicity of the dead by daylight community does in some part contribute to the prevalence of people who want to run meta loadouts and don't feel like they can just chill out and have fun, as losing is now going to take some personal toll on their emotions for both sides- whether that be anger, frustration, embarrassment and the like.
Ngl this just sounds like a you problem. You shouldn’t be taking it so serious, it’s a game. You’re out here getting stressed over some tbags 😭. If you don’t want hate messages just go anonymous??? They won’t be able to see your profile. Another thing that would solve it is YOU not taking dbd so serious. You’re not winning money if you win or lose. To make your comment short, all you’re technically saying is, “I don’t want my ego to get hurt”. 🤷♂️
As a killer main the “balance” doesn’t matter to me. I run whatever build I find fun on whatever killer it’s fun to run on. If I’m winning I won’t tunnel, if I’m getting out looped and Gen rushed I’ll tunnel. If it’s a sabo bully squad I’ll BM and 4 man slug. I have fun almost every game
I really enjoyed watching the video. I've seen so many others like this posted but 90% of those covered only one side and not both. I think there are issues on both sides of this game but there is also common ground. I wish the devs would implement more game modes and not just time gated events like legit long standing if not permanent modes without builds like chaos shuffle and 2v8. It made dbd feel fresh and didn't just feel liks killers and survivors going at eachothers throats running back to back meta builds.
Idk about if it’s fully killer sided as it isint completely however something I do wanna add is that for a game to be survivor sided there needs to be a good 3-4 stack trying to make the game harder on the killer w perks etc or just a really good player and a worse killer whilst for a game to be killer sided you simply need to use mechanics that are unfun and feel cheap whilst playing a decent killer and having basic game knowledge which is significantly easier to do
I think the biggest problem with dbd is that the balance for survivors is completely different between swyfs and solo que. Playing against a swyf feels like you're playing a completely different game, they don't even have to be chase gods, they just need to bring a few second chance perks, waste a bit of your time and the gens absolutely fly by. This makes it nearly impossible to balance survivor correctly, because balancing around solo que will make swyfs even stronger, but balancing around swyfs will make solo que even more harrowing. There's no winning
I’m so sorry!! I couldn’t sworn the graphic mentioned Sadako, but that’s completely my fault! Cenobite and Plague are being updated in November after next weeks mid chapter update. I apologize for the confusion
The game is very balanced now. The clear issue is “some players”. fun builds barely exist because you try something on soloQ only to be tunneled or camped/slugged. Survivors have been getting the bad side more because the new maps have terrible loop design.(like a pallet inside a house in Haddonfield that loops a 2m couch) as a very good killer player…I don’t see how the game is survivor sided, I win most of my games with low tier killers, I don’t even use regression perks, which tells me killer players suck at looping and creating pressure, they chase one survivor at a time and complain when 3 free survivors do gens
If you are new to killer, get ready to have people escape. When you are in the mid level like most people then it's killer sided all the way. Once you get to higher/top mmr is when it starts tipping the other way. Especially if you're using a M1 killer, get ready to get looped and gen rushed while survivors are getting critical saves when you finally down someone. But I say it evens out if you main one of the top killers and they have strong mobility and anti loop abilities.
IIRC, the win rate for killers excludes DCs, and it's almost always a losing survivor that DCs. If you include those games, the win rate for killers is more like 70-80%. Also, how can it be balanced when a Blight can go on a 1947 win streak. And a Billy can go on a 400 streak using only 1 perk. What's the record for a survivor streak?
Because it's Blight, the second strongest killer in the game. I'm unfamiliar with the Billy streak; was it before or after his rework? Wasn't there a 4 man that got 500+ wins?
Win streaks don’t mean a whole lot in terms of balance. Not saying those killers aren’t amazing, they definitely are, but a majority of those wins are against teams who aren’t going 100% like the killer. Most of those survivors probably aren’t even SWFs. Take MomoSeventh’s blight streak for example. He lost when 4 insane survivors brought strong perks, items, and addons. Despite him being insane, playing an insane killer, and using an insane build, he still lost. A strong 4 man SWF is almost unstoppable
Made two videos discussing camping/slugging. The largest problem Too often, the devs overcorrect using a cleaver instead of a scalpel. The key is to allow "cheap" gameplay but discourage it with diminished reward or a penalty. Did you tunnel one survivor? They get extended BT/Haste or an additional hook. Did survivors pop 2 gens without anyone losing a health state? Remaining gens take longer ATM killer addons are the biggest balance problem as they often give infinite gamebreaking power with little downside. Survivor addons can be annoying but will be exhausted with use.
Which killer addon give "infinite gamebreaking power" ?? But i agree on the punish for tunnel and gen rushing, it should be implemented, slowing the gens and the tunnel will make the game funnier.
Playing both sides, and exclusively solo, I came to realize that the game is generally Killer sided against solo survivors but very survivor sided against SWF groups or at higher levels of play. It just have to do with how the loops are designed. And it make sense that the game favor survivors since they outnumber the killers 4 to one in a game. But it also makes the argumentation of the community lopsided.
i mainly play surv but dont think its any sided necessarily jus depends on how good both sides are tbh bc it can go either way. and i mainly jus use a support healin build or a goofy one never rlly any meta specific ones
In most case survivors will alway be better assuming if they willing to work with each other but sadly in solo queue because there so many time you cant even do anything what so ever or you team dont want to do anything
I definitely think the game is SWF sided. If it’s 2+ solo queues the killer has an advantage. I think the best solution is a VC function for survivors or have a class system for casual matches like they did in 2v8 and have a ranked mode for perks
I think the game is killer sided but becomes survivor sided the more organized the survivors are. I've had matches where I could do literally nothing as killer. Every attempt is just shutdown. Likewise, i've had survivor matches where I felt utterly powerless. The killer just outplays me at every turn and nobody is helping or even doing gens. But I guess that's the nature of an asymmetrical game. It will never be balanced. You just have to endure the bad matches and hope the next turns out more fun.
On one handed yeah with new hooks spawn rate and hooks now just coming back and not every map has been changed its more for killer side but that's only when its a solo. When facing survivor friends it actually becomes survivor sided they have be at certain skill level to pull off old builds thwt would normally work if hook distance wasnt so close by a loop.
As a killer it feels like some maps the hooks are far away and if team had break out i be screwed. As a survivor the hooks are magically on top of me , team mates just cant always be perfect to savers
The thing is, from a developper point of view the game is balanced and they can hardly do better than keep doing minimal tweaks to perks and powers, as for the player experience the game truely is survivor sided they have an overwhelming advantage in number of player, perk playstyle, item... But this potential goes to waste most of the time, when killer usually run a trial with 2 meta addons, 4 perks and a plan in head, survivors just launch a game most likely in soloq or duoq, most of the time teamate don't bring any item or low quality item/addon and there is 0 coordination with them It doesn't stop there, survivors as a whole also have a much worse mentality than killers, they start trolling, playing less efficiently or straight up give up on hook or disconnect when they are unhappy which happen almost every game, "I don't like this killer, boring gameplay, my teamate are bad, we lost the advantage we're going to lose anyways let's go next", killers on the other hand cannot give up easily, if they disconnect they get a penalty and no bloodpoints and there is no way to give up on hook, survivors will finish all gens, 99 gates then waste your time until you push them out and probably post the clip online, which is why people usually don't give up as killer If you look at a match with 5 new players, the killer will have a much easier time winning because the difficulty of this role is created by the survivors, if they cannot hit skillchecks and complete generators you have more time to find them and chase, it's easier to follow a beginner and hit, than loop a killer which abilities you don't know about, your teamate also don't know what to do and may run into the killer or let you die on hook But if you look at a match between 5 really good players, survivors brought items, they are communicating, they run meta perks, they know how to waste killers time and they will force chase away from gens being worked on, hooking is basically useless, you are wasting time by picking up a survivor, risking to get flashed then you have to go all the way to a hook, easily losing 5-15s for every hook you do, and since you are against experienced players, they will stick to the gens as much as they can, you spend 30s earning a hook state and that's 1/3 of a gen multiplied by 3 and now you have to search a survivor and repeat the process, which is why competitive player tend to slug, you put someone out of the game temporarily, you don't lose time and they can't pick themselves up unless they use a perk Devs are trying to accomodate both ends of the stick, not giving swf too much power and not making the game too hard for new players / soloq I don't think this game can be fully balanced it would imply that survivors either always perform at their best or at their worst, or that perk/base game would work differently if you play soloq or swf, making two differents games with differents rules
its not really a problem if the game is unbalanced tbh. the only balanced version of the game is 1v1s with limited perks and good ping. what matters the most is experience. its really frustrating playing vs a killer like wesker where he has multiple opportunities to mess up while you have to play much better or have a really strong structure to counter him. opposite side: as billy or huntress your power is worthless on a lot of loops. aura reading perks give no feedback when your aura is being read, discouraging stealth (it's a playstyle endorsed by the game, doesn't matter your opinion on it). playing vs trapper on grassy maps is a miserable experience. playing vs skull merchant at all is dogwater. the game isn't clearly survivor sided anymore, i don't think the experience is as fun with the newer killers having overloaded kits when you compare older similar killers (ex. spirit moves at 110 with a mobility power but blight and wesker move 115 while having better mobility, artist is 115 while huntress is 110, etc.). theres a lot to be said in this regards, namely gen speeds changing, hook grabs removed, and base kit bt. as far as perks go, killers are undeniably favored when you compare the old perks (even if you count fundying ruin meta). the only thing arguably stronger for survivors are anti tunnel perks, but getting tunneled out is going to happen on any sufficiently powerful killer tbh.
Right now, the game is balanced overall (possibly Killer-sided), but mechanically Survivor-sided. This is due to the majority of Survivors players being *terrible*. This isn't an insult, but an observation as many will simply... not work on gens for large periods of time.
Hey Carniveris, I'm a content creator in the anime and movie analysis space that is looking to make a video on DBD. I was hoping to collaborate with you, but noticed you don't have a business email in your TH-cam bio. What would be a good way to get into contact with you?
imo this game isnt balacanable if you cant fix the gap between solo survs and SWF (even if voicechat or pings dont fit DBD, you cant balance a role that is so inconsistent)
frankly speaking, just as important, i think, is giving a chat for killers and survivors to talk pre game, BEFORE the match starts. do you have any idea how much healthier the game could be if you talked beforehand? take a look at formats like MTG's Commander format or other format where you discuss the powers of your deck. sure, you'd get toxic people, but actually chill people and toxic people alike could communicate and eventually it would even out. survivors and killers could talk and know what to expect from one another, and even perhaps try to balance their builds or agree on a map before the match.
@@Baby-Blue-102 that would achieve absolutely nothing. That feature would be ignored by most people and would be mostly used to BM the other side. No way one side will say "im going in for a medium difficulty game" and the other side would change their plan. And even then, how can you quantify the difficulty? Each side will just do their best to win no matter what
@@D-Boy22 It may be used for BM, but those who are actually good could really benefit from it. if you're a killer and just want a chill game, you can let survivors know and if their not toxic or assholes, they might try to chill as well. or, if you're going to sweat anyway, you can tell them that. it gives everyone an idea of what to expect and might reduce the toxicity.
But sad no one critize about matchmaking BHVR force Surv to be more alturistic but only escape count and we know being selfish get you higher escape rate than risk your life
I play both sides pretty evenly and in my experience dbd is horrendously survivor sided for the most part unless you're a top 5 killer there will eventually be matches that you cant possibly win no matter how well you play and no matter how much it seems you're demolishing gens simply go too fast for killers that don't have pressure and as survivor I find most of my matches being way too easy my average solo q match on both sides lasts maybe 5 minutes because of how fast gens get done I agree that the game is more balanced than ever but with the maps the way they are it's just way too easy to get away with really bad plays as survivor
As someone who plays both sides game is killer-sided no contest. I win every match as killer and lose every match as surv; when does mmr kick in? Where are the harder survs and easier killers? When do "bully" squads start being a problem cause the ones i see can't even bully right, and, when do killers stop being toxic? (Face camp, tunnel, slug, starting as early as 5 gens but only as late as 3) You can "Out-Skill" a "Bully" squad, but, can rarely "Out-Skill" a "Toxic" killer. Not to mention "Bully" is a whole build; "Toxic" is a playstyle you can adjust on the fly.
You have cross play one dont you. Turn it off and you'll probably see more experienced players on system but fewer matches . You where more then likely going against freshed face players . Mmr just push people to the top so red mmr person could still be a freshed face survivor they escaped. Because as long they keep playing they will eventually get pushed up the ranks. Say which killer your playing as . Since not every new surivior are against trash killers like freddy.
someone doesnt understand the difference between a singleplayer and a team parts game and thinks that a single person from a team part of the game should have enough agency to 1v1 killer and win the match no matter what. the game only seems killer sided because survivor players are consistently underperforming and only part of that is not their fault.
I have been playing mostly killer for over 2 years now and at first i thought the game was survivor sided and then i reached a mmr brickwall and thought it was extremely survivor sided. Now i have alot of experience in the game and game knowledge and i have come to the conclusion that the game is killer sided if you compare it to solo queqe. You can put the effort in as killer and it pays off. As solo queqe you put in the effort and odds you you are still dying at the end if you are not a selfish player😢
Hey!! I didn’t get the chance to fully test on the PTB so I’ll have to wait till it’s on live servers to really know for sure, but I’ll probably add deadlock, ruin, pop, or an aura perk back into my build!
The game is not balanced. It also makes me sad how everyone thinks that everyone thinks they are journalists/investigators whilst missing the actual point: BHVR needs to get their $h1t together. They don’t know what their game is anymore, nor have their own identity. 1) when you are balancing a game you need to know: are you a party game or a competitive game. Currently, playing swf makes MATCHES (not the game) survivor sided, by the same token playing against a 4 man solo q team makes a match killer sided. The game will never be properly balanced due to this. If BHVR wasn’t lazy, there is a way to satisfy both Q’s returning swf to its own mode (or revamping swf mode into a competitive mode) or vice versa (solo q into competitive mode) and balancing each mode differently. 2) also with dbd copying overwatch and Fortnite’s business model, the game continuously loses more of it’s identity to be more like those other games in order to grab its player base-which are not the most skillful or wholesome of players that love cheap gameplay mechanics like spamming buttons and not learning the game. Dbd is lately often referred to as the “Fortnite” of horror but I digress although we are somewhat at a high this game will probably eventually die out-especially when Fortnite can get these licenses themselves. Why play the Fortnite of horror when you can actually play horror on Fortnite?
Do you need me to tell you why they took so long to nerf perks like MFT and B:CoH? $$$ strong perks mean characters and even DLC being sold. and in my opinion the incredible buff on the huntress was just so they could sell that were-elf skin. I might just be being pessimistic, but they are a company and for me all the decisions that BHVR makes are based on profit, for me that is their biggest problem.
This game is so far from being balanced. Survivors , especially solo ones, really do get the crappy end of the stick. The tunneling/proxy camping/slugging meta that is so rampant makes days playing the game impossible. No one wants to cue into a game that they get killed out at 5 gens. It’s disgusting and disgraceful to players. The developers keep their head in the sand because they fear the killers not playing. However they are pushing survivor players out of the game completely. The perfect example was the anniversary event and those insta hooks from a distance. Totally over powered but behavior did nothing about it. We need to address this toxic play style and allow all players to enjoy a balanced game.
The game is skill issue sided , majority of the player base are casual players on both sides who don’t want to invest time in getting better which is fine . I win most of my killer games unless I actively throw and use one gen regression perk . And to be honest dbd being balanced would make it boring the charm of dbd is how arcade like it is and the funny interactions that can occur . I don’t tunnel or camp and if I lose well I lose gg go next
While that was a choice made by my editor, I like Xeno but I was disappointed with the adaption from movie to in game. I wanted something a bit more horror and stealth based rather than the chase based mechanic we got. Alien is one of the most suspenseful horror licenses and I wanted to have another spooky killer personally. But I love the chapter overall, just not my favorite adaptation.
People that hate the chapter usually do because they don't know how to play against xeno and/or because the hate playing as xeno because they have to deal with the turrets
imo dead by daylight was made to be one sided killers always end up killing most of the people they are after just before the one thing that the last person does that defeats them so personally dbd shouldnt be balanced all fighting games are made that way and its all fun so i think if dbd was the same way where escaping took quite abit of time and effort it would give dbd a fresh feel and improve the skills of everyone
The high killer kill rate is due to most players not being good at the game. Note how the data also says nurse has the lowest kill rate despite being the best killer and Sadako has a high kill rate despite being far weaker than nurse.
@@AxisChurchDevotee Saying most players arent good at the game probe my point, bcs how do you expect to get better if you doesnt win? I think the game is currently the most balanced it’s ever been, which inherently makes it survivor sided. It’s supposed to be an ASYMMETRICAL game, where the killer is supposed to be a threat. I play both sides, as a survivor, the only time when we don’t escape is if our team makes TERRIBLE decisions or the killer is cracked out of their mind. As a killer, if the survivor team has even just two competent survivors, I either have to play try-hard to ensure I simply get a kill, or play normally/nicely, and risk getting 0 kills. Mistakes hurt killer SO MUCH MORE than survivors currently. Survivors have so many second chance perks and there are 3 other people to potentially pick up slack. Killers have next to nothing, outside of (in my opinion) broken meta perks they need to have even a decent chance if they don’t wanna play sweaty.
Not to mention that the “fun” part of the game is supposed to be getting into chases, which inherently is going to go one of two ways. Either, survivors get perks/buff/etc. to extent chases, what they’re supposed to do or killers get perks/buffs/powers to end chases quickly, this being the deciding factor for how good a killer is. It’s a constant back and fourth for the two sides. Now, killers like nurse, I think are actually really fun to go against, because even though their ability makes it difficult to keep them in chase for long, the skill difference between you two is where the fun is. Are you able to run her around effectively before she downs you, can you mind game her, did you (as the nurse) get the PERFECT hit? Compare that with killers like skull merchant and knight. Their kits snuff out chases and loops so effectively that it just feels insanely boring, usually even for the killers themselves. Behavior has to find the right balance to the actual “fun” part of the game for both sides. That’s likely why there are so many bully squads, against certain killers, playing the game normally just feels so insanely boring, might as well try and enrage the killer best you can.
Agree with pretty much all of the points, my main question would be how to properly buff the lower tier killers? I think I'm in the minority on this, but I think a fair amount of the lower tier killers need sweeping add-on overhauls BEFORE big changes to their kit itself. Ex. Fixing killers where only 1 or 2 add-ons are useable, like pyramid head for range add-ons, or Freddy who only has his iridescents and the 2 dress add-ons. Also any changes the devs make to encourage an altruistic playstyle feels pointless ever since they changed survivor win conditions to just escape, and the rise in more rat playstyles (ex. Sole survivor wake-up etc.)
@@MagicMonkey96 I'm not sure where you would place him on a tier list, but I've always placed him mid tier. He's one of my 3 mains and I've always done pretty well with him. The only thing mechanics wise that's ever been wrong with him to me was how jank his reveal mechanic seems, and lack of object leaning support. Aside from that, super coordinated teams are punishing, but that's any stealth killer (being able to be called out). Also map dependency, which is poor map designs for M1 killers by BHVR (not a killer issue). What issues do you have with him?
say whatever you want to say but since at least half a year, about 50% of my teammates throw the game 3 minutes into it and just troll around without doing any gens, because of how OP many killers' abilities are, let alone when they run OP perk sets according to the killer they play and yknow what? i can't even blame them anymore 🤷♂️ the devs have nerfed pretty much everything-survivor in this game that was OP, not to mention the insane gen times and increased healing times, but think it is necessary to buff Chucky/Tiffany and Bubba the other day, yeah sure right ok
yeah really the biggest thing to me is the loss of skill expression and the stuff that survivors and killers can actually DO in the game. let us climb rocks again, or sky billy, or flashlight spins :P
So what I take from this is that survivors are crying piss babies, and shouldn't be catered to at all because they are disgusting and want Killer mains to have zero fun whatsoever in the game. Killers are reasonable individuals.
I don't think its sided either way. People just want cry and complain. Great game. Been playing for a year. Mostly good interactions with killers and survivors alike. Again, I think people sweat to much playing DBD. We all need to chill.
Hi carni great vid like always 🩶 The biggest issue I’ve ever seen when i met 4 SWF with gen rush build and map offring without old pop and pain res I can’t keep up with them they stayed ninja until I found one of them and the others start rush again with god toolboxes it seems the devs wants from the killers to use tunnelling or slugging as a strategy they nerfed the killers last breath perks while buffing toolboxes at the end dbd can’t be balanced like this because there 4 of them and one of me it’s not fair Since they made a gen regress from a current progress everything goes down
“Unsurprisingly those who played both sides see the game as balanced” imagine my shock
No but like imagine MY shock
I'm a survivor main, and I feel killer has a slight edge, I'm able to far more easily have a good game as killer than I am as a survivor whether it be in solo que or with my friends who have much more seat time than me. It should also be noted I play Wesker and xeno so I don't really use bad killers, but I also haven't felt the need to prestige a single killer yet where as I have about 20 prestieged survivors and still feel like I'm lacking perk combos that can really help me hold my own against most killer situations. It's not nearly as bad as most people say but I'd say it still leans killer.
Killer main and survivor player: game is pretty balanced. My killer MMR is much higher than my survivor MMR however 😂
I play both sides and think the game is survivor sided but these days it's only because of the maps it's just too easy to run forward and not get caught
The problem with the game's balance has nothing to do with perks or even killer powers(except Nurse. she is broken.)
it's the maps and it is BHVR's map design philosophy.
I've been excited for when this vid was coming, glad I was able to take part in your survey for this and hopefully the data I provided helped you out!
Every side have there issue true overall its balance

@@OrdellRob I play both sides equally, thank you
(Casual player bias) it used to feel killer sided to me when I played killer.
I was curious bout the artist gameplay from a puffalope video, but you do great knowledge vids.
im a fairly new player. i started playing like 4-5 weeks ago and i have about 120 hours.
i can 100% say, picking up killer is way easier to be "successful" on.
@@bluefiremoon1158 yea i feel that. i started out as legion because it seemed to be a good killer to get into that side of the game. but vs good survivors its so hard to get wins with them. i kinda started playing spirit as an S Tier because i felt like i had no chance vs these better survivors on a lower tier killer :D
but im glad, im not alone with this perception. these game are INTENSE, when the survivors know what they are doing.

I love getting value out of stupid/niche perks like Leverage or Borrowed Time
Same i like running build where surv need to play more alturistic
And for killers, they should make the power and addons fun, not the perks bcs thats the WHOLE point of playing killer.

hey carni, I wanted to throw my two cents into the ring.
Sadako isn’t getting changed. Assuming that was a mistake meant for someone else.
Yeah, she kinda got my hopes up for nothing.
I’m so sorry!! I couldn’t sworn the graphic mentioned Sadako, but that’s completely my fault! Cenobite and Plague are being updated in November after next weeks mid chapter update. I apologize for the confusion
@@Carniveris it’s all good! I just about shit myself as a Sadako main. Was like what!?
The game is very balanced now. The clear issue is “some players”. fun builds barely exist because you try something on soloQ only to be tunneled or camped/slugged. Survivors have been getting the bad side more because the new maps have terrible loop design.(like a pallet inside a house in Haddonfield that loops a 2m couch) as a very good killer player…I don’t see how the game is survivor sided, I win most of my games with low tier killers, I don’t even use regression perks, which tells me killer players suck at looping and creating pressure, they chase one survivor at a time and complain when 3 free survivors do gens
The only people for whom the skull merchant changes are disappointing are those who did not read them

Dont forget u can go Trapper on a 400 win streak
Was 250@@NoNameTheFirst
@@NoNameTheFirst It was by DwichaelJackson, after the Billy rework.
Remaining gens take longer
ATM killer addons are the biggest balance problem as they often give infinite gamebreaking power with little downside. Survivor addons can be annoying but will be exhausted with use.
Which killer addon give "infinite gamebreaking power" ??
But i agree on the punish for tunnel and gen rushing, it should be implemented, slowing the gens and the tunnel will make the game funnier.
We need the elephant outfit again🐘
Crazy
Playing both sides, and exclusively solo, I came to realize that the game is generally Killer sided against solo survivors but very survivor sided against SWF groups or at higher levels of play. It just have to do with how the loops are designed. And it make sense that the game favor survivors since they outnumber the killers 4 to one in a game. But it also makes the argumentation of the community lopsided.
nice editing
I play both, but i made the poor poor mistake of being a Legion Main. Life is pain~
i mainly play surv but dont think its any sided necessarily jus depends on how good both sides are tbh bc it can go either way. and i mainly jus use a support healin build or a goofy one never rlly any meta specific ones
It's usually the side I am not on sided game.
You get it
@@Carniveris i'm way too much of a casual to not get it
I personally miss when the game was just pure choas. Thats what made it fun..... Now..... Its a more balanced, less fun sweat fest.
But this potential goes to waste most of the time, when killer usually run a trial with 2 meta addons, 4 perks and a plan in head, survivors just launch a game most likely in soloq or duoq, most of the time teamate don't bring any item or low quality item/addon and there is 0 coordination with them
It doesn't stop there, survivors as a whole also have a much worse mentality than killers, they start trolling, playing less efficiently or straight up give up on hook or disconnect when they are unhappy which happen almost every game, "I don't like this killer, boring gameplay, my teamate are bad, we lost the advantage we're going to lose anyways let's go next", killers on the other hand cannot give up easily, if they disconnect they get a penalty and no bloodpoints and there is no way to give up on hook, survivors will finish all gens, 99 gates then waste your time until you push them out and probably post the clip online, which is why people usually don't give up as killer
If you look at a match with 5 new players, the killer will have a much easier time winning because the difficulty of this role is created by the survivors, if they cannot hit skillchecks and complete generators you have more time to find them and chase, it's easier to follow a beginner and hit, than loop a killer which abilities you don't know about, your teamate also don't know what to do and may run into the killer or let you die on hook
But if you look at a match between 5 really good players, survivors brought items, they are communicating, they run meta perks, they know how to waste killers time and they will force chase away from gens being worked on, hooking is basically useless, you are wasting time by picking up a survivor, risking to get flashed then you have to go all the way to a hook, easily losing 5-15s for every hook you do, and since you are against experienced players, they will stick to the gens as much as they can, you spend 30s earning a hook state and that's 1/3 of a gen multiplied by 3 and now you have to search a survivor and repeat the process, which is why competitive player tend to slug, you put someone out of the game temporarily, you don't lose time and they can't pick themselves up unless they use a perk
Devs are trying to accomodate both ends of the stick, not giving swf too much power and not making the game too hard for new players / soloq
I don't think this game can be fully balanced it would imply that survivors either always perform at their best or at their worst, or that perk/base game would work differently if you play soloq or swf, making two differents games with differents rules
its not really a problem if the game is unbalanced tbh. the only balanced version of the game is 1v1s with limited perks and good ping. what matters the most is experience.
its really frustrating playing vs a killer like wesker where he has multiple opportunities to mess up while you have to play much better or have a really strong structure to counter him. opposite side: as billy or huntress your power is worthless on a lot of loops. aura reading perks give no feedback when your aura is being read, discouraging stealth (it's a playstyle endorsed by the game, doesn't matter your opinion on it). playing vs trapper on grassy maps is a miserable experience. playing vs skull merchant at all is dogwater.
the game isn't clearly survivor sided anymore, i don't think the experience is as fun with the newer killers having overloaded kits when you compare older similar killers (ex. spirit moves at 110 with a mobility power but blight and wesker move 115 while having better mobility, artist is 115 while huntress is 110, etc.). theres a lot to be said in this regards, namely gen speeds changing, hook grabs removed, and base kit bt.
as far as perks go, killers are undeniably favored when you compare the old perks (even if you count fundying ruin meta). the only thing arguably stronger for survivors are anti tunnel perks, but getting tunneled out is going to happen on any sufficiently powerful killer tbh.
Very true
frankly speaking, just as important, i think, is giving a chat for killers and survivors to talk pre game, BEFORE the match starts. do you have any idea how much healthier the game could be if you talked beforehand? take a look at formats like MTG's Commander format or other format where you discuss the powers of your deck.
sure, you'd get toxic people, but actually chill people and toxic people alike could communicate and eventually it would even out. survivors and killers could talk and know what to expect from one another, and even perhaps try to balance their builds or agree on a map before the match.
@@Baby-Blue-102 It really would not. Specifically because this is a player vs player game.
(Face camp, tunnel, slug, starting as early as 5 gens but only as late as 3)
You can "Out-Skill" a "Bully" squad, but, can rarely "Out-Skill" a "Toxic" killer. Not to mention "Bully" is a whole build; "Toxic" is a playstyle you can adjust on the fly.
Best comment so far
You have cross play one dont you.
Turn it off and you'll probably see more experienced players on system but fewer matches .
You where more then likely going against freshed face players .
Mmr just push people to the top so red mmr person could still be a freshed face survivor they escaped. Because as long they keep playing they will eventually get pushed up the ranks.
Say which killer your playing as .
Since not every new surivior are against trash killers like freddy.
someone doesnt understand the difference between a singleplayer and a team parts game and thinks that a single person from a team part of the game should have enough agency to 1v1 killer and win the match no matter what.
the game only seems killer sided because survivor players are consistently underperforming and only part of that is not their fault.
bro unironically thinks he can beat team elysium 💀💀💀
Delusionnal, you just play against low survivor and are a terrible one who can't loop a killer or play the map, hope it helps.
As solo queqe you put in the effort and odds you you are still dying at the end if you are not a selfish player😢
hello carniveris! Since dms are nerfed what perk gonna use better for artist now?

I play both sides pretty equally and dbd is def killer sided, not that that's necessarily a bad thing it's 1v4 it should be a bit killer sided
We need to address this toxic play style and allow all players to enjoy a balanced game.
wait...i'm goated
The game is skill issue sided , majority of the player base are casual players on both sides who don’t want to invest time in getting better which is fine . How is it balance if Killers literally have 60% of winrates?

Low tier killers are bad basekit. Making them addons reliable is not a good solution

Since they made a gen regress from a current progress everything goes down
