Thank you! That was a very practical demonstration, and very inexpensive. I am just a beginning carver, and I really need this protection.

A strip of leather as the base is good too, wrapped around with the green tape to hold it.

Use cold porcelain - (pva glue and cornflour), mold your thumb, let dry, and wrap in preferred medium.

I simply use a piece of “Mole Skin” easily cut and easily wrapped on my thumb. One three inch long by one inch wide piece works miracles. Pretty easy too.

Gracias por la idea para proteger el dedo. Buena contribución a las medidas de seguridad que se deben emplear en un arte tan exigente con el manejo de objetos cortantes. Felicitaciones

7:10 actually looks like a piece of leather wrapped with that green tape, to me.

@@oldedrum Or AMAZON. I ordered thin leather guards but I wrap them with the gauze tape for added protection.

    Is that racquet gauze?

It's a cohesive (sticks only to itself) tape. Some brand names are "Vet Wrap" by 3M, and "Flexx Wrap", but it's generically referred to as "cohesive bandage", as at Amazon..

A good carving knife will slice cleanly and quickly through thick leather. But not this wrap tape.

    • @garthaffnerjohn
      @garthaffnerjohn 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Limicola1 yes it will slice right through, but how it's used for doing a pearing cut, not really. I've reinforced with leather before and rewrapped with the green guaze.

A piece of leather will make one much quicker than all that tape.

Actually you have no sewing to do if you use a lighter, say 4 to 6 ounce leather, dip it in hot water for a sec and "mould" it to your thumb. I used to make them to protect my thumb from the needle when sewing heavy leather.

Tanned Moose hide would make an excellent thumb guard. It's likely about ten ounces in weight and would protect your thumb quite well. You're probably right, in that it would have to be sewn though.

i cut a thin strip of leather and use that as a lace for the fold over leather thimbly bit.

I've been woodcarving since i was 7 years old (21 years now). Never managed to cut my tumb, even tho i keep my knifes razor sharp.
So IF you need a thumbguard to protect your selfe from cutting yourselfe. Then you are werry likely doing somthing wrong.

There's an elderly man that's been doing this for years. The man has his own TH-cam channel. Lynn O. Doughty. Its where this guy stole the idea and he don't even credit the ol man for it

You know, several people can come up with the same idea if it’s simple enough
