Just bought this reel from trident’s ‘used’ section! Always a great place to buy used gear, and the reviews help. 😊 Can’t wait to see what it’s like!

I have a Guru S 7+ on a 6wt rod that I use in saltwater. It has been completely submerged several times and is still going strong. Good reels and a great drag.

I'm wanting to get one of these for a 10 WT, but I'm holding off until I see more reviews about them. Thank you Trident Fly Fishing for being one of the only reviews about the Centerfire!

Hi Trident. Not to go off topic regarding Lamson reels, they are good products and you gave a great review, but can you please check into reviewing the saltwater TFO BVK reel series. I picked up a 7 weight to try out and still haven’t fished it yet. They’re pretty new on the market and not very much information from the pros or outfitters available. I’ll keep watching. Thanks a million for your diligence and hard work.

Hi Tom, we'll add it to the 'to-do' list.
Thanks for watching and we appreciate the kind words!

    Honest appraisal.

Looks like the Centrefire has the same excellent attention to detail as the Cobalt. eg. The spool appears to be very well balanced, meaning low reel wobble for fish that have long fast runs. Most reel companies are lazy and balance reels like car tires and simply wack extra weight opposite the handle. Lamson like most fly companies are just terrible at explaining their tech and expect reviewers and shops to guess at the features.

My biggest complaint w saltwater reels, even expensive one, is that seemingly no matter how diligent you are about rinsing them w fresh water after use, they still can corrode.

      Silicone spray helps.

You have to grease the insides.

Hence the Cobalt being IPX8 and titanium screws.

Don’t like Lamson’s handle too small for me

my opinion is Lamson reels suck. They are not durable at all and the "sealed" drag is a mess after a few months of proper saltwater use. I have had 4 Lamson reels over the years and all of them failed in the same way ... had to call their support so many times to send me a new conical drag because it was corroding or once it actually disintegrated mid fish and I went from drag to free spool while fighting a fish. I switched to Galvan about 6 years ago and haven't looked back. One time I dropped a galvan off the roof of my truck when a gust of wind took the rod off the roof and all that happened was a scratch on the anodizing... I dropped a lamson off the coffee table and it landed on the wood floor 2.5 feet below and the frame bent and the reel was basically never the same after that.

Not my experience at all. Recent Lamson's are badass, and I put serious use on my reels living in South Florida and spending a sh*t ton of time in The Bahamas each year. To anyone reading this, go handle a Lamson Litespeed M and Nautilus NVG side by side and let me know.

@@bluechipmurray I’ve had 6 litespeed reels over the years and ALL of them have leaked . I fish in the surf of the west coast wading and getting battered by waves … I had lamson support on speed dial to send me new drag clutches a few times a year. they seem to have moved away from the plastic spindle housing and moved to aluminum with their more recent reels. I did just purchase a speedster for my trout setup but I doubt I’d go back to lamson in the surf … especially not since the Galvan reels are so solid and the drag is 100 times better than lamson. Only reason I got a lamson is because they are super light weight and it balanced well with a 5wt. Speaking of light weight That reminds me of the time my litespeed 3 fell off a coffee table and landed 2 feet below on the wood floor and the frame bent lol . One of my galvans blew off the roof of my car and barely had a scratch.

@@Raevenswood Your experience has nothing to do with the reel featured in this video, or really any of the new/current offerings from Lamson. It's not applicable to their current line of product. I promise you, we're talking apples and oranges here.

@@bluechipmurray we’ll see how my speedster holds up but once a company puts out a crap product it’s hard to have confidence in anything they make. It’s like people saying KIA makes great cars now lol I’ll never believe it

@@bluechipmurray also it’s hard to see how it’s apples and oranges when literally the only difference I can see in the reels is that the spindle housing is now metal and not plastic but the spindle cap is still plastic and inside is the same drag clutch they have used forever so it really just seems like it’s still an apple with an orange facade 😂
