      @@randomnpc445 especially light basla wood is nearly as light as typical styrofoam, but it was hyperbole. Balsa is closer to styrofoam than woods like oak though.

      @@jwalster9412 I mean, I get it, it's clearly ment as an entertainig video which it is, but I was aleso courious to see how a properly made bat from that type of wood would perform. And even if they couldn't find one proper piece of wood from which to make the bat at least put a bit of efford to give it as much chances as possible to make a bat that could be used/tested at least a couple of times.

    I'm halfway through the video and anxiously anticipating seeing how many pitches this balsa wood bat actually survives.
    Mariano Rivera made a career out of breaking normal bats and making it look easy. You're all obviously God tier athletic specimens, so I bet you make it look even easier and I can't see this bat surviving more than a single decent swing with contact.

    The obvious way to go is to make the next bat hollow, that would be even lighter, it would be a Pinger, not a Dinger though.

    When doing the glue-up, you could have glued all edge-grain to edge-grain by staggering the lengths of the pieces being glued. If you want a light bat that doesn't break so easily, you might also try a balsa core.

    I like how it didn't break at the weak connection point. No, the dowel you used to connect it was so much stronger than the bat, that it broke at the ends of the dowel glued inside.

    I saw this coming when you said balsa wood, then had to dovetail it together.
    Still, awesome video. Awesome idea. I'd like to see it done with a full piece of balsa. It'll still fly apart, but I bet it sends the ball farther.
    Or try it with pine or cedar. Normal bats are made with Ash or other similar wood.

    Maybe a carbon fiber insert/shank through the center and some epoxy would have kept it together. Though a better idea is a water jet lathe turned carbon fiber bat.

    Try a sturdy wooden bat hollowed with a metal tube in the center and then wood put back into the tube right at the sweet spot making it light and fast but also hard and sturdy on impact.

    If u go to hardwood stores, some have pre-made billits for lathe work. The one I go to here in San Diego had some that were 24" long made of balsa wood and I think they could even cut longer ones and were 4" wide. So if u ever do this again, don't go to a craft store, go to a wood working store and go to the precut lathe wood area... 😀
