Some of the graffiti is actually commissioned by professional artists, but agree that most of it is vandalism and is quite ugly! Great video as always ❤
Thank you! We found out since publishing, thanks to one of our lovely viewers, that some of the artwork we cruised by that was featured in the video, was actually part of the 'Bring The Paint' festival organised by Leicester City Council. They gave permission for talented street artists to work their magic in some of the derelict and inner city areas, to brighten them up and it worked! We still hate the tagging on lock gates and bridges though
Such a shame to see all the graffiti and damage/deterioration to the locks. Broken Window Theory may well be in effect here. An organised clean up and paint refresh would work a treat in some of these locations.
I think you’re right about Broken Window Theory and it’s so sad. Our next video that will be out later today has us going through the same area a year later and interesting to see how much it has changed, or hasn’t. Thanks for watching 😊
Love the videos just finished watching the video when you told us of the sad passing of your lovely Jasper.we lost our Kobe in feb very sad time regards Ashley
It always strikes me that when the "decorators" are given a space, they do some stunning urban art. However when I see a beautiful old canal bridge with some tags on it, it makes me sad. Also when you see a beautiful 18th or 19th century building, albeit derelict, covered in tags, it also makes me sad. But as the saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
So true! Those tags are so ugly but there were some truly stunning pieces of art, and we were glad to find out that they were on approved buildings to help bring some colour to derelict areas 😊
Very interesting watching this as I am born and bred Birstall and lived there for 59 years before moving on to our widebeam April 2022 - currently moored at a marina in Barrow but hoping to move around more as we get used to it. However 70’ x 12’3” limits us to probably north rather than south. Great vlog.
We loved out time in Birstall, especially the water park, as you will see in the latest video that I just published today. It was the perfect change of plan for us, after we couldn't find a mooring in the city! Hope you are enjoying your new boating life as such as we are 😊
Lovely video - it's raining / sleet and snowing here. So it's so nice to see a warm weather video. Hope the puppies and both of you are doing well. Take care..
We are staying warm in our cosy boat, and enjoying winter out on the cut. I don’t like being so far behind with the editing, but I also love remembering warmer times. Thanks for watching 😊
Art if its commissioned and allowed. Vandalism no matter how nice it is if permission was not granted by building owner or neighborhood. Enjoyed the video!
Glad you enjoyed it! We have to agree. We found out after publishing this video (from a viewer) that some of the art features was part of an initiative by the city council to allow street artists to create their artwork on buildings to brighten up derelict areas 😊
Things might not have gone to plan, but they sure were beautiful, at least the cruising part. Graffiti as art or vandalism certainly is in the eye of the beholder, and in the pocket book of the lock arm owner or building owner who has to pay to repaint it! Sure wish those graffiti artists would help paint the things that really do need painting. The city of Tacoma (Washington State) has paid graffiti artists to enhance all manner of walls, bridges, and such, and it's very attractive. But most of what we see, and you see, seems just scribbling. I love that you show so much of the lock mechanism and how all of that works. We don't have that here in the USA. One of these days, I hope to hire/rent a narrowboat in England or Scotland, so I'm learning from you. 🙂 Thank you. Love the lights from your boat at night.
You are so right Ann, it's in the ye of the beholder. We did find out (form a viewer), after I published this video, that Lecciester City Council hosts a 'Bring The Paint' festival every 2 years, inviting street artists to come and show off their talents decorating derelict buildings and walls. Some of that work was superb, but it's the ugly tagging and spray painting on lock gates, walls, and especially bridges that is a sad sight in so many towns and cities that we pass through. We can highly recommend you trying out a narrow boating vacation in the UK one day. We have met so many lovely people from overseas on their travels on the waterways, and we are happy we have whetted your appetite! 😊
Great vlog, you must of been knackered at the end of a 10 hour stint 🥰 Some graffiti is more like art but we find most of it vandalism. We’ve never really been fans of any of it, I’m afraid. ☺️
10 hours was rather a crazy day, and more stressful than normal, as we knew we couldn’t just moor up anywhere like we do in the countryside. We are with you that most of the graffiti we saw was just vandalism, but then there were some beautiful murals that from some further research, thanks to one of of viewer’s comments, are part of a plan to allow street art in some areas of Leicester. Thanks for watching! 😊
Oh wow you two!! I love watching your TH-cams... I swear... every time you go under a bridge I duck... hahaha... You are doing an excellent job on the videos... Carry on cruising! Love and hugs from Texas! Oh and I would say part vandalism and part art... Some of it really nice!
Thank you so much. We love that you are enjoying our travels with us, and keeping up with our new life after our time in Texas! Life is certainly different from driving along 518 every day to work! Some of those bridges are SO low and narrow aren’t they and we feel like we breathe in and duck too! Some of the graffiti, like the murals are just so creative, and we’ve found out now that some of them are in approved legal areas in an attempt to brighten up the city with street art 😊
Even though I don’t like being so behind, it is nice to remember back to the lovely weather and green, green scenery when I’m editing on a cold and rainy day! 😊
It's certainly is a wonderful art form! We found out after filming this vlog that some of the art pieces were part of a drive from the city council to rejuvenate derelict areas and brighten them up, and they definitely do that! thanks for watching 😊
I almost forgot to share! My mother thought the detail you captured a flower was incredible with my girlfriend just over all loving the colors you capture.
Enjoyed that. We holidayed at Barrow on Soar in 2017 from NZ. Can't wait to see your video of that section. Remember helping a boat with the lock there.
We loved Barrow On Soar. So pretty! That’s upcoming in a couple of videos. We had a lovely little girl help us with one of the locks there who had been learning all about the canal system in school and was so excited to be able to help us! Thanks for watching 😊
It was good to see Camille and Cameron again. Also I saw that you passed by Narrowboat Dunworkin' - and it was good to see that again. Graffiti can be both art and vandalism. Some of it is really art (and some not!) but it doesn't alter the fact that it is done on property that doesn't belong to the artist which, in my view, makes it vandalism. There are towns, I believe, where the municipality employs people to "decorate" the outside of buildings with murals (i.e., graffiti). That is great.
Hi Ruth, it was a lovely catch up with Cameron and Camille! We agree with your view on graffiti. Most of it is so ugly and an eyesore along the canal, but some of the colourful street art murals we saw were stunning. I’ve done some more research about the ‘graffiti’ along this stretch of the canal, thanks to one of our viewers, and found that there has been a project to legalise street art in certain areas along the canal and the city centre in Leicester, and there are now designated areas for artists to display their amazing street art 😊
Curious what your thoughts are on the Hybrid electric now that you're poling early morning to get water! That was very kind of you. Serious, I am curious your thoughts if you would build again would you change anything or build the same?
We have talked about getting a hospital silencer fitted to our diesel engine, after we heard a fellow boater’s very quiet engine, but at the time of our build electric boats were still not that common. That is changing now and we have good friends that are currently having an electric boat built, and other friends that we went onboard their all electric boat and it’s definitely something we would consider much more if we ever had another boat built! 😊
I tend to thing that "tags" are just vandalism, but I also sdmire the talent of some of the more picturesque spraycan users, i take it the sporting theme on the building you passed was because it was a stadium of some sort - if so I thought that "art" was approproriate. Loved the vlog and thanks for bringing us along on what must have been a long and tiring day.
Thanks Jeff! A comment from one of viewers led to us doing a bit more research, and finding out all about the 'Bring The Paint' Festival last summer. Some of the amazing art work we saw now makes so much more sense, where the City Council have made sure there are spaces and areas for talented artists to leave their mark and brighten up the surroundings! It definitely worked! But we have to agree that the tagging of lock gates and bridges is just ugly. 😊
Some is Art and very nice , alo some is relevant to the area. the name tags and such like are the vandalism. If it imporves the area it should stay. That is my thoughts on this. Thank you for asking and I love your vlogs xxx
Thanks so much for watching and commenting Karen! We have to agree with you, and since filming and publishing this video, we have found out about Leicester City Council's 'Bring The Paint' festival last summer, where certain areas were designated for street artists to work their magic, and it worked! It's made a lot more sense of what we saw now!
great vlog guys I think vandalism isn't nice but there are some really lovely street art, over here in Adelaide Australia, they have professionalism people go and paint silo's they are beautiful... So I guess it comes down to what it looks like...
Some of the street art was just stunning on some of the walls, obviously painted by some very talented artists. We have found out since that the city council had a ‘Bring The Paint’ festival and designated buildings that could be painted to brighten up some derelict areas. 😊
Hi James, we since found out, thanks to a viewer's comment, that the city council have designated some areas of the city for artists to be allowed to 'Bring The Paint' as part of a festival last summer. We still don't ,ike the ugly tagging on the lock gates and bridges though. Thanks for watching 😊
Some of the art is applied by very talented people and brightens up dull inner city areas. The art has a place and in my opinion is appreciated in inner cities but not for the countryside. Excellent video yet again.
Thanks so much Steve. We've found out since filming and publishing this video (thanks to a great comment from a viewer) that some of the artwork featured was part of the 'Bring The Paint' Festival last summer in Leicester. The City Council approved certain areas for talented artists to work their magic to brighten up some inner city areas, and it definitely worked! We still hate the ugly tagging along the canal though.
Hi Guys Love Your videos. Perhaps another Poll You could have posted is whether people thought that this is the most overgrown, untidy, unloved canal in England and Wales. How overgrown does a canal have to get before someone, anyone notices and does something about it. The water plants are growing from bank to bank and will end up meeting in the middle, trees are growing over and into the canal. I have seen videos where volunteers clean up the over growing herbage but apparently no one has noticed the the state of this canal. Even the people who live along the edges of the canal seem oblivious to the state of the back fence line. Perhaps it the Greenies who prevent this from being done, if so it wont be long before You will be able to walk along the canal instead of boating along it. Perhaps canal boaters can give an annual award for the worst overgrown canal in England and Wales. Perhaps it is just my O.C.D. but that is a mess. David in Oz.
You’re right that some of the canals have become so overgrown and some stretches are so narrow because of it. I think it’s a massive task to undertake and the CRT are very thinly spread, but it certainly makes it hard going in some places. Thanks for watching and we hope you are enjoying our videos 😊
Sadly that's what friends of ours experienced the week before we were there, which is why we didn't stop. Others had had a great experience there though. Thankfully we were happy with where we ended up in Birstall though! Thanks for watching 😊
It was so good to see Cameron and Camille from Narrowboat Badger, though I know this is not a recent. Definitely miss them and hope they are well. Last I heard they were looking for a new boat. Your Vlog was beautiful as usual. I find murals to be nice, like the long sports themed one you shot, but hate the tagging of names or other words and assorted messes that are all over the place. Around here murals are given permission as art work , graffiti not. Thanks for sharing. 🙏🤗❤️🐾🐾🐾 Kathy
We are of the same opinion as you Kathy regarding the ugly graffiti tags, but some beautiful murals along the way that brighten up otherwise dull walls. I loved editing this and seeing Cameron and Camille’s smiling faces again. They are currently visiting her family in Jamaica over the winter but still plan to come back and by another boat when we last messaged. We followed them on Badger from the start, and when we finally met out on the canal and got chatting about living in Texas, we found out that Cameron spent some time living in League City, on the outskirts of Houston, just like us! Thanks for watching as always 😊
@@onedaymoreaboard Thanks for the reply and letting me know about Cameron and Camille. I too followed them from the start. Loved their vlogs and their photography. Was fortunate enough to get a postcard with one of their B/W photos, that I have framed. Glad that you have met such good people. Take care. 🤗🐾 Kathy
It is cut back intermittently by contractors employed by the Canal & River Trust, but the frequency seems to be somewhat sporadic, especially in more remote areas 😊
I agree! We did find out from a viewer that some of the street art shown in this video was actually part of a plan by the City Council to bring art to the city to brighten up derelict areas. Some of the street art was stunning but the ugly tagging on the lock gates and bridges is definitely vandalism. Thanks for watching 😊
If they don’t own it or have permission, then it’s vandalism. There isn’t any sort of Law Enforcement on the canals? The abandoned boat made realize I hadn’t seen LE on the waters.
The Canal and River Trust try to manage abandoned and unlicensed boats, but it seems to be a long and expensive process to notify and potentially remove them from the waterways. We found out after we published the video that some of the graffiti/street art featured was part of an initiative by the city council to give artists permission to brighten up derelict areas with their artwork 😊
We have to agree! After filming this episode we found out from one of our viewers that some of the art work featured was part of an initiative by the city council to bring colour to to derelict areas, encouraging street artists to show off their talents. But it’s totally different to the random tagging and awful graffiti on the bridges and lock gates that we often see on lock gates and bridges coming through towns and cities. Thanks for watching 😊
We have to agree! There were some stunning prices of artwork and we found out (thanks to a viewer) that some of it was part of a ‘Bring The Art’ festival organised by the city council to brighten up areas of the city 😊
If you have permission to place a statue, paint a mural or place art of one kind or another, It's art. If you don't have permission it's vandalism. I would not want Picasso to paint my garage door. Unless he signed it and I could sell it 😉 John & Cindy (Idaho)
Hi John & Cindy! I’ve done some more research on the street art along the canal in Leicester thanks to one of our viewers, and found there has been a project to regenerate areas with colourful street art, and have legalised it in certain areas. That all makes sense now with our video showing some stunning art work along the way, but the tagging on lock gates and bridges and abandoned buildings is ugly. Thanks for watching 😊
I do not think the question is, is it art or vandalism? If they had permission to paint the building or bridge it is their art even if not my taste. If they did not have permission it is vandalism no matter how much I admire its beauty.
You are very right. We found out form one of our viewers, after this video was published, that quite a lot of the street artwork featured was part of a plan by the city council to rejuvenate derelict areas, and they gave permission to street artists to come and brighten up the city 😊
Very good answer. Some of it, we know now, is in areas approved by the city council to brighten up some inner city areas. Thanks for watching and commenting 😊
Hi Colin, thanks for watching and commenting. We've done a little more research since making this video and found out that the city council approved some of the street art to brighten up some inner city areas, but we have to agree that most of the ugly tagging of bridges and lock gates is absolutely vandalism sadly
We found out from a viewer that some of the artwork featured in this video was approved by the city council as part of their plan to beautify derelict areas. That made so much sense, but we really hated all of the graffiti tagging as we cruised through the city. Thanks for watching 😊
We thought the same until we found out after publishing this video (from a viewer) that some of the artwork shown was actually part of an initiative by the city council to bring colour to derelict areas, and they gave permission to street artists to showcase their talents. Some of the artwork was amazing but we still hated all of the non approved tagging graffiti all over some of the locks and bridges. It was really good to find out this information and look at it all from a different perspective
Need some facts checked guys, most of the graffiti you showed was part of paint Leicester that was last summer I know because I rode past the guys as they were doing it, there is some in the city centre too whole sides of buildings
Thanks for your great comment, which led to us doing a bit more research, and finding out all about the 'Bring The Paint' Festival last summer. Some of the amazing art work we saw now makes so much more sense, where the City Council have made sure there are spaces and areas for talented artists to leave their mark and brighten up the surroundings! It definitely worked! Thanks for watching 😊
We think you’re right. Some of the murals were stunning and very creative but we hated all the tagging on the lock gates and bridges. It really taints city cruising 😞. Thanks for watching 😊
We think somewhat the same Jay, especially all of the tagging on lock gates and under bridges. However, we found out after filming (from one of our viewers) that the city had given permission to some street artists to paint murals on the sides of derelict buildings to bring some colour to the area, and those pieces of work were stunning! Thanks for watching 😊
On dedicated areas for Graffiti artists to express themselves there are some really talented designs for the public to enjoy and there are times, when done cleverly, it can really cheer an area up. However graffiti on historic buildings and structures or people's private property isn't art in my opinion, it is vandalism and creates an ugly, depressing world. There should be more dedicated areas for the real artists, but it probably won't stop those who are vandals from continuing to ruin beautiful structures and views. Hey ho 🙄
100% agree with everything you've said Karen. we've found out that some of the art work we saw was part of a festival organised by Leicester City Council for street artists to work their magic to brighten up derelict, and inner city areas, and it worked! Thanks for watching 😊
Some of the graffiti is actually commissioned by professional artists, but agree that most of it is vandalism and is quite ugly! Great video as always ❤

Thank you, we appreciate your vlog🙏✝️🙏
Thanks you James 😊

'I'm Punting Dear' you should have burst into a verse of Just one Cornetto!
I wonder if Cornetto ever imagined that everyone would forever sing that version of the song! Pete would be right at home on the canals of Venice 😂

Take care. 🤗🐾 Kathy
In this video i noticed the vegertation on the canal is really over grown. Do people clear it, or is it left up to mother nature?.
It is cut back intermittently by contractors employed by the Canal & River Trust, but the frequency seems to be somewhat sporadic, especially in more remote areas 😊
Some of its art but some of its vandalism
So many Banksy so they think
You’re right. There is certainly some talent in places, but most is just ugly sadly 😞
Great filming but in my opinion it would have been improved by dumping the music in the canal.
Sorry you didn’t like the music John. It’s hard to cater for all tastes, but thanks for watching 😊
@@onedaymoreaboardI thought the music was lovely what a grumpy britches 😂😂
Thank you ❤️
I think graffiti is a mix of art and vandalism. Some is beautiful and some is just random paint spraying.
When it comes to graffiti, if its in good taste I think it's ok. Intention is a big player!
Unless he signed it and I could sell it 😉
John & Cindy (Idaho)
Hi John & Cindy! I’ve done some more research on the street art along the canal in Leicester thanks to one of our viewers, and found there has been a project to regenerate areas with colourful street art, and have legalised it in certain areas. That all makes sense now with our video showing some stunning art work along the way, but the tagging on lock gates and bridges and abandoned buildings is ugly. Thanks for watching 😊
I think the graffiti is great along the canal (in the cities)... I've seen some great art on canal-side walls to make Banksy weak at the knees!
You are right, some of it are truly stunning works of art! 😊
It's art if you don't mind it there..... Graffiti if you don't
Very good answer. Some of it, we know now, is in areas approved by the city council to brighten up some inner city areas. Thanks for watching and commenting 😊
I don't care at all for the graffiti, but I try not to let it ruin my day. People should find a better use for their talents.
You’re so right. It’s quite sad to see. Thanks for watching 😊
Vandalism definitely
Hi Colin, thanks for watching and commenting. We've done a little more research since making this video and found out that the city council approved some of the street art to brighten up some inner city areas, but we have to agree that most of the ugly tagging of bridges and lock gates is absolutely vandalism sadly
There may be artistic talent and expression, but unless the person owns the canvas or has permission, it is vandalism.
We found out from a viewer that some of the artwork featured in this video was approved by the city council as part of their plan to beautify derelict areas. That made so much sense, but we really hated all of the graffiti tagging as we cruised through the city. Thanks for watching 😊
Vandalism because the canvas isn't theirs. Those buildings belong to others
City area I’m thinking crime is much higher. Graffiti 80% is trash.
We think you’re right. Some of the murals were stunning and very creative but we hated all the tagging on the lock gates and bridges. It really taints city cruising 😞. Thanks for watching 😊
It’s so annoying that assholes have to vandalize the natural beauty of the canals. Some call it art but I think they must be blind…..
