A very popular conversation in the day. Great choice of a Chevrolet small block and a Toyota. Both really simple to work on and have taken up a lot of the last 50 years of my life. You are going to learn a lot and enjoy yourselves. Love this.
When it comes to car build projects, nothing's better than a project vehicle that comes with loads of fond memories and acres of sentimental value. And if the vehicle is a classic and desirable to boot, makes it far better. Love the intro of this video of nostalgic photos showing how the FJ has been part of the family for years - as well as seeing what it looked like at its prime. I hope you keep the original colour. I love it ❤ Looking forward to following the journey of this build. I'm very excited for you guys. I wish you both the very best. 👍
I love these cars my dad drives one currently and we have one in the backyard that I’ll buy off him when I save the money and I’d love to drive alongside him once I do
Loved the start of this video ❤ It's wonderful to see that this truck has been part of your family for decades. Makes the build even more special. Just like my 80 Series. It's been with my eldest sister's family since new (1996) and since 2018, it's been mine - still keeping it within the family, and it's a keeper. Looking forward to the next build episode.
Your intro smiles say it all! 🙂...the mention of 1HZ got me!! I had an old 75 trooper like your other truck with the twin tank diesel running the bulletproof 1HZ. I know someone with an FJ like yours running a 1HZ. that thing drives and hums like a dream!! not to mention they are still awesome looking trucks. All the best with your build....it will surely look brilliant Im sure!
Same here i grew up on a farm in South Africa and my dad had one of them. Learned to drive it when i was prob 10 years old. Thank you for brining back all the good memories. I remember that dashboard as a child i was so interested in all the buttons and what they do.
Going to be a good project, you’ll learn a lot on the way. If you fold the bonnet back on to the windscreen frame it makes it easier to work on the engine bay, motor.
Thanks for watching Kyle. I tried to push the bonnet all the way back and the latches snapped because they were all rusted out 😂 almost knocked myself out when the bonnet fell!
Looks like a quadrajet carbie, great carb when setup but will most likely need a rebuild. Good luck with the project, Facebook groups and old forums are a great source of information 👍
From the research I’ve done they do seem to be going up in value a fair bit but could never sell it would love to keep it in the family for years to come! 👍😊
I'm glad I found this. First episode to. I had an FJ45 myself years ago and would love another one. Subscribed and will follow till the end. Good luck guys.
Mate what a cool project build you to are taking on. Hats off to you both for having a go👍. It shows you don't have much mechanical knowledge but i really can't say how good it is that you are trying something way out of your comfort zone man😉. I can't wait to see what you do wath it im sure you 2 will do a great job of it. Love ya work 👍
This is going to be an interesting project,i learn't to 4wd in the 40series cruisers in central OZ. You will enjoy the make over and the driving fun.Good luck. Thanks for the vid......
Really love the intro you guys. Great editing! Been following you guys a while now, as the big lap is on my bucket list. I love your work, but moreover how genuine and real you guys are. Can't wait to see what's coming up. All the best from a tiny European country
My enthusiasm in your channel has just gone up to extreme! This is exciting stuff. Now a reality check! What you'll need Big shed with plenty of space and loads of tools. $30 - $40K Heaps of time, patience, tenacity and most of all an understanding partner. It sounds like you want to do a proper job which is my preferred method of restoration. This will take time and money but is worth it. Marty from Perth
Thanks Marty! We have a pretty good setup where the car is going everything that we need for the job is in the one place so should all work out great! A lot of hours ahead of us we’re going to learn a lot I’m sure.
Yes, this is a fantastic idea to restore the vehicle. Is not much work, guess 2-3 weeks, then he stands like new there.... And it is a wonderful relationship project! Please also show the corresponding scenes. I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes.
oh wow ! cool! going to be one big restoration job that's for sure! surprised you didn't show it running at the end ? . I hope the costs of the project don't overexceed your budget for travelling ! but once restored would definitely be worth quite alot !
Kudos to Megan for jumping in from the start! I think you need to make sure she gets plenty of manicures, pedicures or whatever strikes her fancy. She is a keeper!!
Awesome 👌.. Where's Olie... l had a 1980 HJ45 30 yes ago... it was yellow too..loved it and still dream of it..if l found it, l would do what you are doing.. Love the yard.. at least no one will steal it.... lol
You need to sand blast and hot dip Galvanise the chassis. You need to plan and start at the very beginning. Parts are available from Mr Landcruiser such as roof, panels, wiring looms and accessories. Search Mr Landcruiser. You need to plan and do it right from scratch. It needs a "Nut and Bolt" job - rebuilt to new. Planning, time and money are the key words. Do the job properly. It's a huge job.
If worse comes to worse, you can weld a roll bar onto it and turn it into a dune buggy. Cant wait to see what you both do to it. Cheers from Northern California.
What an awesome project. I had an FJ40 with a V8 back in the day as my beach toy in Qld. but I always wanted to build a 45 & of course with a V8., it just never happened! As an Ex-business owner of a Hot Rod/Resto shop, be prepared to do the "Hard Yards" & Please...... do not cut any corners with the build. Not knowing much about cars has you at a very big disadvantage (I try not to cringe when you have no idea) but please be careful of any advice you might get here or from the so called "experts" THIS is your next adventure, going somewhere you haven't been before can be very daunting, but I can kind of tell you'll do ok. Looking forward to the challenges ahead!!
Thanks for your tips mate. Love a challenge and will definitely take our time and not cut corners luckily for us where the car is going we have all the right people around us with years of panel beating experience! So should learn a lot! Can’t wait to see how the old v8 preforms when it’s all done.
The oil filter position and battery location seem weird because of the non-standard engine. FJ45s had a 2F 6 cyl petrol motor (that used almost as much fuel as a 350). Great old trucks - I wish I'd kept my 1982
Hey guys stick a screwdriver through the oil filter and turn. Hard to see from the video but it looked like to could get the screwdriver through the top of the chassis. Hey guys we will keep the troopy could never sell it 😊 we plan to take the fj on some awesome adventures! And the troopy will be used for our second lap mid next year 😊 if all goes to plan.
Love it how your ol' man kept it registered all these years but never drove it. Classic 🤣WA obviously do not have an annual rego safety inspection. In NSW, vehicles older than 5 years, are required to pass an annual eSafety check (aka Pink Slip) at rego time. You would not be able to continue to register a vehicle without it.
I've seen them in much worse condition than that , the good thing with them is all the body panels come apart , right down to the tub . There was a restored one down the road from me a few months ago for sale for $35,000 , a few weeks later it disappeared so presumably sold . The windscreen surround will have rust ( they always do ) so that should come out but is repairable by the looks , crash course in mig/tig welding coming up ? Do you know if the gearbox is 4 or 5 speed ? Great to get a first look at it , chassis looks good and it's straight , good base to start from :-)
Hey Gordon. Yep will be getting on the welder at some point I rkn! $35,000 sounds about right they are becoming a sort after car for sure. Definitely will be rust around that window frame I reckon.

I was surprised the motor only takes 4L of oil whereas the 1HZ needs 9.8L... I wonder what the oil change intervals are... it'd be a real PITA to do the filter everytime it's due for a service. That rig will look a million bucks once you've completed the resto, guys. It'd be worth quite a bit too! Looking forward to joining you on your rebuild series!
