The Royal Marines were on the beaches in Normandy several weeks before the invasion. They were there to do a recce and report back on the state of the beaches and the cliffs, on one of the American beaches. The British and Canadians took three out of the five. The history chap does the best descriptions of Military history.

Mark, Dan of York here. I just learned today on a U tube video, of a D Day connection to my area of North Yorkshire. At a place called Kirkham there are the remains of an ancient Priory, a monastery, beside the river Derwent, deep in a secluded valley, near Malton.
It is charming, beautiful place, which I always looked out for from the train on journeys home to Scarborough from York. The ruins seem slight at a distance, but there are a number of high ragged walls, including most of the Gatehouse, & parts of the refectory building. On the run up to D Day this place was used for the training of assault troops, & more importantly, vehicles & landing craft, & other equipment, was tried & tested for the attack on the French coast. The place was ideal as the river is fast flowing among terraces of mostly wet fields, enclosed in woodland & hedgerows similar to the 'bocage' country of Normandy, & the ruins provided a site for climbing, the walls standing in for cliffs etc.
The area is very out of the way, with only one road in & the railway available for transport of the gear & troops, so secrecy was assured, & of course it was very far from the major activity of preparations for D Day in the SE of England. In the weeks before D Day, many important figures visited to inspect & study the activity at Kirkham, including Churchill & leading military figures. It was also the first place to which our late Queen Elizabeth made an official 'Royal Visit', along with her parents, the King & Queen. I will try to trace the video. Yes Mark, what those Commandos did was amazing, the courage they showed to get the job done !!!
The site is 'Explore Yorkshire with John', the Yorkshire village with a D Day secret'.

An unknown action to most of us, sadly. These guys - so few amongst so many on D-Day, and no less deserving of our respect, admiration and thanks . 👍🇬🇧

Excellent.......sadly, there are hundreds of unknown battles fought by the Allies during the war that had to be won by them, lest the world descend into the abyss......its not possible to adequately remember the heroes......thanks....

Hi Mark. Lovely video. I knew nothing about this. There are so many things about the invasion that we do not know. What we do know is the incredible bravery of these young men who gave their lives for the liberation of Europe. We the allies, the US, UK and all the others could have said, "let Hitler have Europe", the cost will be too great to liberate it. But we sacrificed our young men and women and vast amounts of our respected national wealth to free Europe from tyranny. A great endeavour!!!!

Really do love the History Guy. Nice to see the Brits getting some recognition - most movies just focus on Omaha, and make it seem like the Brits and Canadians just walked ashore. There were an awful lot of very stiff battles, that rarely ever get a mention. The Melville Battery assault by the 9 Para was another similar case - planned for a 600+ man force with loads of equipment, it actually went in with 150 and without their equipment. As to the VC - the criteria are extremely difficult to meet, which is one reason why they are so special - the Jeremy Clarkson VC program highlighted it well.

They took as much equipment and rations from the dead and wounded as they could, as this mission was vital for the success of D-Day. Something similar happened to the British airborne men further inland from Sword. They had to go through a minefield improvising with a lot fewer men. Superhuman feats by very humble men. ❤🇬🇧

When mentioning a commando unit like 42 commando it's said four two not forty two etc. Easy way to tell a walty mitty. ✌️

You're right, nothing went to plan, often troops were landed at the wrong place. I've heard many stories where British troops were landed in the American zones and Americans in the British. They then came under the control who was in command of that section of beach. It only started to click when a beach head was established and stores could flood in. The Romanians, bulgerians and Hungerians had a rough day on D day for sure. What units did servive were then sent to the eastern front to protect Germany. - How's your luck :(

There were small ports along the coastline for the use of fishing vessels and small freighters but the biggest port was Cherbourg which was at the north end of the north end of the Cotentin Peninsula and sure to be wrecked by the Germans. I will say that of such ports, one of the best action scenes in the film 'The Longest Day' is Free French Commandos from No 10 Commando (Inter-Allied) liberating the small port of Ouistreham on the 6th June.

Another facet of DDay unknown to most of us Mark- the impression we all had was that it was just the landings on the beaches, but obviously a lot more was involved to get them there - the logistics of it all is mind numbing- to say they were just brave is to understate their achievements - they were all more than brave, most making the supreme sacrifice for the benefit of all- which is why I get so angry when a commemoration that took place yesterday can be ignored for the most part in London in favour of rainbow flags! By a "regime" and its members that wouldnt be in existence if it wasnt for the bravest of the brave - well I for one and the majority of the true citizens of this country thank them and will remember and honour them . Take care mate, love to all ,that includes the odd couple! X🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

@@mikdavies5027thanks mate but I'm sick to the core of the snipes and accusations towards us from criminals for the most part that shouldn't be here- the worst of it is they are enabled by the deluded, and in my view traitorous, so called fellow citizens we have to listen to with their rainbow rhetoric- roll on the revolution! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

@@claregale9011if it's a free country why can't we fly our countrys flag? You missed the point- rainbow flags represent nought but an ideology that doesn't represent me or 99% of this country- to give precedence to these rags over our true flag is disgraceful, demeaning the sacrifice of real men and women 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
