- Do you collect physical media, movies, TV shows, video games?
Here's a secret, it doesn't matter what you collect or how you do it. Your collection IS YOUR COLLECTION. So join me in diving into what matters when collecting movies, TV, Blu-ray, or whatever else.

AMEN! i'm a really basic collector and i watch a lot collection videos on youtube and i swear the 4k people sometimes feel like some weird cult following :D i would never part with my dvds. it's what my collection got started back in my teens. now i basically buy standard blu-rays all the time. i get the special features i want to see and that's enough! :) i don't even own a tv that is able to show 4k movies. so i'm good. i actually get excited when a blu-ray has a slipcover cause it's not that common in germany...
Really? Not that common in Germany!? Didn’t know that, but yeah, Blu-ray is just fine, if not perfect for most collectors.
4k isn't always better. It depends on the company that does the restoration. I've seen some pretty bad 4k "upgrades"
I am happy with Blu ray. Yes i do have some 4ks but most movies I just get the blu rays. Agree. Get what makes you happy.
Nothing wrong with that, most 4Ks just come with the Blu-ray anyway, might as well not pay out the ass.
Same here, blu ray is the go to for me, a 4K has to be truly special for the price.
Great video. I often say “stay out of other peoples wallets” because everyone enjoys different things. If someone wants 10 copies of the same movie or only VHS go for it. Collections are supposed to be representative of the owner.
That’s what I’m here for, take my opinion/advice/reviews/whatever, not as the gospel, but as a tool to make your own conclusions.
Sometimes a 4K release of a film is from a horrid, inaccurate new video master (even from Criterion!!!) and that is happening more than you'd think or it should. the Blu-ray can be more accurate and in an extreme case, Stanley Donen's CHARADE was issued on Blu-ray from Criterion and it looks good, but it is still not up to the original colors of the film, which were 35mm three-strip Technicolor prints. The only video copy that is that good is a long out of print VCI DVD that was only pulled because of the copyright on the music, not the film, as it had fallen into public domain for home video at the time. That its why you have to be very picky and not just totally upgrade to the next format. Thanks for the video!
I was JUST GONNA SAY THIS!! Even as a collector, YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL. And Scream is a GREAT EXAMPLE …. The VHS has footage the DVD never included…. The DVD and the Blu Ray each had separate features the 4ks never had but if u just go for 4k and throw everything else away who would know that. Just do you
@@aarongilmore1254 Then different video companies in different countries have different extras or at least some different extras, which just happened with FEAR IS THE KEY, two decent, different transfers 9it needs a 4K) and two different audio commentary tracks. BRANDED TO KILL had two different Blu-rays (Arrow U.k. and Criterion) then the 4K Criterion with no HDR arrives with a new restoration and the detail is not bad, but it is WAYYYY to lite and that killed its Noir look. Good thing the Criterion edition has both discs, both transfers. People need to know.
Thanks for the kind words, and yes! Color timing has been messed up before with BIG TIME releases, and it’s maddening.
95% of my movies are standard Dvd, most of them second hand but i do love them.
I have absolutely no interest in upgrading every dvd I have like some collectors, but there are a few of my favorites that i will buy every release possible (Halloween, Return of the Living Dead, Black Christmas etc) just because i gotta have it. I still buy a lot of new dvds and they typically look great. Bluray vs DVD i think has a large quality gap but the difference between bluray and 4k often doesn't seem to be worth it. I have a number of dvd to bluray upgrades but a lot of the charm in some of the old dvds and the inferior picture quality is that nostalgic look to it.
And they just came out with a new 4k of Carrie from Arrow but I have the 4k from Scream factory if u Look at reviews some with say each one is awful and each one is great. Best to just get what works for you or enjoy what you’ve already purchased
Exactly, you’re buying it at the end of the day, I’m just one voice to take into account.
I actually started buying regular DVDs again. Most of my collection is 4K but some movies I just don't need in 4K or BR. Also paying $2 for a DVD movie special edition is pretty awesome.
Finding an old DVD copy and then realizing that most of the extras ported over on newer releases are from that DVD is awesome.
I collect the 4K’s of Scream Factory (Collector’s Edition) because when I first moved out of state my girlfriend said you should get a hobby since your family is so far away and I was like yeah I agree and my Best Buy had the They live and Prince of Darkness 4K’s and I was like ok first 4K’s and they just put them out maybe the re-release 4K’s of OOP blu-rays will make this worth collecting but now even with Arrow VS MVD I still make sure to get all the 4K Scream factory’s that come out because that’s my main collection
That’s an awesome story, and a great way to collect!
I collect some 4k and it’s great and all but I’m still amazed by blu ray, it really is good enough for me. this is kind of hard to put into words because I can enjoy watching all formats but I personally need at least blu-ray to feel like I actually own the movie/a good representation of the movie (if there is a blu ray release).
I can understand that argument, for some people, it’s about that picture quality, and that’s worth improving if you’re into it.
Great video. You got a new sub.
Thank you for the sub!
I collect VHS, full screen DVD, widescreen DVD, LD, BD, and 4K and have a perfect display for each. CRT, HD CRT, 480p plasma, 1080p plasma, and QLED. The more I love a film, the more money I'll pay for a higher resolution. I love Home Alone but I don't need to see it in ultra high definition. But regardless of format, my setup allows for a top tier experience. And there are certain things from VHS versions of movies not found on later releases. Like Ace Ventura's cut Dolphin scene. Or just the nostalgic trailers and ads at the beginning.
Part of VHS for me ARE those commercials, it’s a Time Machine.
