"To Have And Have Not" (1944) is amazing. Love that Hawks picture. Perfect pairing of Bogart & Bacall, their first as well. It's a loose take on Hemingway. There's another film a noir from director Michael Curtiz called "The Breaking Point" (1950) that is closer to Hemingway's work. Both classics in their own right.
Yor is cheesy, cheap, fun and has Corinne Clery. It is basically and italian movie with cavemen, dinosaurs and extraterrestrials. I found it once on VHS and the second half had no image. Many years later got it on DVD and now I have on Blu-ray. It's a guilty pleasure but if it has science fiction and or dinosaurs I keep them in my collection no matter what. Greetings from Sweden!
Great haul. Across the universe is a great film. One of my personal favorites. There is a 4K release, but only through Amazon. The 4k looks amazing & is worth the upgrade in my opinion. Hope all is well.
Just discovered 2nd and Charles this year, always find something worth bringing home! The Apartment is so good I have the Arrow Academy just didn’t know there was a box set, hope I didn’t get ripped off 😮Great video nice pickups.
Great team! I miss those blu ray stores, they're gone and done here in Brazil since 2012, I think. And don't let Mike Nichols light films fool you. Virginia Woolf is harsh and heavy stuff.
Ah that sucks, man. We don’t have many stores left. Just a few, and it’s tough to find things. But it’s fun to visit every once in a while. Thanks for watching!
It's interesting that here in Burbank which is really the center of the American Film Industry that our local used blu-ray stores rarely have titles from the Warner Archive collection. Always lots of other boutique titles at great prices. ( I work at Warner Bros. and wish that I had access to the Archive titles at a discount price,)
I actually saw Yor : The Hunter From the Future in the theater! I was ten years old. It was the Summer of 1983. My family and I were on vacation in Maine. We went every summer for about five years. On that trip, my father took me to see Yor, Krull, and Wargames! My old man loved movies as much as I did....even crappy movies like Yor.
Love To Have and Have Not! It’s a big Casablanca knockoff that’s not as perfect, but still really good. It’s worth it just to see B&B falling in love with eachother every moment they’re on screen. I’m a big Bogart and Bacall fan (I’ve seen over 50 Bogart films!) and I absolutely recommend checking out all four of their collaborations - To Have and Have Not, The Big Sleep, Dark Passage, and Key Largo :) Also, I’m SO jealous of that The Apartment pickup!!!

@@FilmsByColor It doesn't have the same massive inventory as the Kennesaw location but I've been lucky and scored a ton of 4K movies that were recently traded in. It's much smaller and newer but is starting to get some more good things traded in.
Brawl in Cellblock 99 is great. Pretty much anything the director S Craig Zahler) does (Bone Tomahawk, Dragged Across Concrete) is great. It's all uber violent, but the storytelling is elevates it.
I've seen Yor. It's almost so bad it's good. Maybe worth watching with friends to poke fun at it. Actor Reb Brown, who plays Yor, has been in some really bad movies: Space Mutiny, Yor, Howling II and the made for TV Captain America movies from 1979. And I met him at a convention in Pittsburgh, PA a few years ago. Nice guy who is aware of the poor quality of most of his films but he has fun talking about them.
Brawl in cell block 99 is pretty crazy. Definitely a violent film and a different side of Vince Vaughn. The writer/director did a movie called Bone Tomahawk. I highly recommend it. It’s a western/horror movie that’s amazing. It’s got Tarantino dialogue and humor as well as very cool action. Definitely different than any movie I’ve ever seen
To Have and Have Not was made after a conversation Hemingway and Hawks had during a hunting trip. Basically Hemingway and Hawks agreed it was his worst novel and Hemingway then said no one could make a movie out of it and Hawks took the challenge.
Love that aspect of the film & that Hawks was even friendly with Hemingway. The way Hawks went about making the adaptation, what to focus the story on. It's an all-round Classic for a reason.
I go to a 2nd and Charles when I visit my family in South Carolina along with Mr K’s. 2nd and Charles is always overwhelming because they have so much and they seemingly put no effort into organizing anything. Also they don’t seem that stringent about what condition the items they buy are in. Definitely prefer HPB which we have here in Ohio as well as The Exchange.
@@ethanedwards7557 Yeah HPB is much better at organizing. Plus, they don’t have as much because they put stuff on clearance after a while. I’m pretty sure some of this stuff has been at 2nd & Charles for over a decade.
On "Public Enemies" it's interesting the place John Dillinger has in general crime movies. There's a number of films either about him or featuring him, of course a number of true crime docu-drama stuff, and that line in Reservoir Dogs about being "deader than Dillinger" which is neat considering Lawrence Tierney (who played Joe Cabot) played Dillinger in the first Dillinger movie. But more than that, Dillinger influenced Bogart's character in "High Sierra." The film "Public Enemies" I don't recall much, but Dillinger makes for interesting pictures.
@playedout148 makes sense, although I've only seen 2 Mann movies. "Heat" and "Public Enemies". "Heat" kind of blows most films away in the dust, sort of like what happened there to the real John Dillinger outside that there movie theater in Chicago. He had seen "Manhattan Melodrama" by Woodbridge Strong Van Dyke. Michael Mann that's a name, but Woodbridge Strong Van Dyke that's something else.
Hi Have Yor on VHS. It's brutally bad. One thing that I always remember is the scene where the guy is shot with a "laser", the effect was really excellent. Yea, like my VHS copy of ETN, Extra Teresterial Nasty, can't give it away, it always boomerang back. So it's in a box with lots of other VHS stuff. At one point me and the late wife had more than 800 VHS movies. Plus 100's more of taped stuff from TV to keep. Those were the days. Be safe
Some fun picks, but I think you missed a good bet by not snagging that Looney Tunes 6 volume DVD box set. I picked them up individually as they came out back in the day, and not only do they contain a lot of content that has yet to make it to blu-ray, but there are tons of documentaries and commentaries as well...
Love the idea of a big box used media chain but 2nd & Charles dissapoints me. The prices are about what you would pay online (or more) when you include shipping - feels like they could charge less than since you are there in the flesh with no shipping required. Also I very much DISLIKE how they mix DVD and Blu-ray on the shelves. Pretty annoying if you are only interested in Blu-ray.
