      Hi Andy, we're going this May - we have a small budget as most of our $$ is going towards the trip (Barcelona, French Riviera, Rome, Sicily, Croatia, Venice)...so we need to eat well, ON THE CHEAP! Any recommendations from your trip?

    Just a note for those who want to enjoy jamón. There are very different qualities of jamón. Jamón serrano is any kind of salty curated jamón. Normally you want to look for iberico wich comes from iberian pigs and has normally more quality (obviously you can find a very good serrano that is better than an iberico, but rule of thumb iberico always tops serrano). If you want you can rank also jamon iberico from the ones that eat fodder (jamon de recebo) to the ones only fed with acorns (jamon de bellota). Another tip is avoid touristy places to get it. Any butcher's shop will have a selection of different jamon and cheese with the same or better quality than boqueria and normally a lot less pricy, although probably not in a cone to eat as street food but better to enjoy once in your hotel room.

      My parents are from Spain, I had a hard time eating jam when I was younger, fear of choking to death, older it's a delicious salty food, but some people don't like it or some people don't like the best ham, I eat it, I am ok with it, my good friend tried it and hated it. I would say it might be similar with tourists, what do they know about ham other than american ham in a sandwich. Spaniards believe their food is amazing and the best, it could be if you like fresh fish or other special dishes most people don't know about even some of the spaniards. Lamb is big but in a nice restaurant, sherry wine isn't known by everyone, dry or sweet, there are chupitos that are very good, beer is what everyone drinks, some people who don't drink alcohol don't have much of a option but to get drunk of it. Eat more. Paella is Spain, they usually make it horrible. Not everyone likes a paella like Valencia. Stickly , many people don't like Rabbit. I love it, but I have seen a German family who couldn't believe they were eating it. We are living in a world where gypsies are wonderful and being robbed should be fun, maybe they can pay gypsies not to rob tourists so the left won't trash the police. In the US, they will riot and break everything and start fires and change the whole country due to the police making a mistake. We use to have a safe country, now the movement is to send people who rob and ruin everything by plane or any way possible to their country and cites. People should be aware of this and not travel and vote or better to move to a state or country that doesn't support this way of life, at some point, your going to live in a world without police and you have to defend yourself. Going to jail if you harm the bad guy.

      I don’t think he got him jamon iberico in the cup. It was a different type of jamon. You guys know more but I have been to bcn twice. I think you need to get the plate of jamon ibirico experience.

    'ive been to Barcelona, Spain. I went by myself, I was only 19. I toured the whole city by foot, metro, bus, and rollerblades (I had brought them from the US) The only time I experienced something unnatural was when I decided to go visit a club by myself downtown closer to the beach area. It wasn't so great tbh and on the way back home towards Catalan, I'd taken a metro. the blue line, Line 5. Mind you this was like 3 AM. There were still a good amount of people on the metro as if night-life were always that lit. So I got comfortable and I stood on the metro as if I were taking the red line from DC to MD. I was wearing a shirt, shorts and some sandals because I did not have night-out outfits. (Oh well! I still don't! Lol) Out of nowhere some man, who seemed to be "drunk" came up to me and tried to stumble on me and felt up on me when he did. I gave him a stank face and I moved. I looked around to see what others reactions were or why they didn't help and everyone in that cart just looked at me. It was a look you get when you know something's up. So I got a flight feeling inside then. I went to go sit down by a few people. I Facetimed my friend who was still awake here in Penn. US and told him about what had just happened. He asked me "Is he still there?" I looked up thinking the man had left and on the row next to mine the man was there, looking at me with his arm resting on his leg and his head resting in his hand just looking directly at me. If this were daytime I don't think I'd think much of it but the man didn't get off and there were two more stops left on the metro until it ended its trip. My stop was second to last, and I thought there is no way this man has the same stop as me. My stop had come, which was El Carmel and people had begun to get off. I got out and started to walk fast paced toward the exit. For those who haven't taken this stop, it's quite a walk to get to the surface- if anyone has taken the metro from DC to MD to Wheaton Station and seen the flight of stairs you have to climb to get to the surface-- well imagine that x4. So while I was exiting the first room where the metro had dropped us, as I looked behind me while going up the stairs and thought 'yes! he's gone!' but I thought too soon because when the metro was about to leave, out pops the man looking around, saw me, and headed towards my direction. By that time I was on top of the exit stairs and my flight senses kicked in. I sprinted all the way home. Not to the surface, HOME. I ran like I never ran in sandals before in my life!! I don't know how I did it but I did and I'm lucky. I'd still go by myself again-- or maybe not be selfish and share the greatness with somebody-- either way those two weeks were the best weeks of my life! I'm 22 now, and I miss it very much!

    If you want real catalan food, go to the moutains, to a Masia (rural house), those restaurants are awesome!! There's a great Restaurant near my house called Can Guinart, and if you go there you have to try Botifarra amb Segues (big sausage with beans) and Canalons anb seps (caneloni with mushrooms). By the way, here in catalonia we have a lot of kinds of mushrooms, for example: xampinyó, sep, rovalló, trompeta de la mort, cama groc, girgola, fredolic, llenega... And they are delicious. Oh! And if you like ham or jamón in spanish (pernil in catalan), you have to try ham and melon, it's a classical appeticer. And don't forget the pa amb tomàquet (bread with tomato). Or calçots and romesco (some kind of onion and a sauce). Allioli (a sauce made of garlic and olive oil)... There's a lot more that paella and tapas...

    • @Jaycation
      @Jaycation  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for all the great info! I definitely will get to trying these dishes. I loved Calçots! I tried them twice. Never knew there were so many types of mushrooms. Thanks for watching Judith!

    Barcelona guy here: I must note that "El Quim de la Boqueria" may sound a bit funny to some english speakers since in england, "quim" is slang for vulva. In this case, anyway, Quim (which is pronounced "kim") is a short form for Joaquim, which is a catalan personal name.

      All Jamon Iberico is aged for at least a year... some up to 4 years. They're definitely not "fresh" as you describe in the video.
      Ciudad Condal is great, been in there a few times - best pimientos de padron in the city. Terra D'Escudella in barrio Sants (10 mins outside the centre) is excellent. They serve proper Catalan food and beers in there. Santa Piadina, and Bo de B are the best places for lunch to go.

    Great video! Looking forward to our visit in October. Do we need to make reservations for any of the tapas places your mentioned? I went on the hyperlinks below and it looks like there's a link to make reservations. Thx

    • @Jaycation
      @Jaycation  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! No need to make reservations, most of these places you just have to wait a little to get a seat. If you want to reserve a table at Ciudad Condal you can but the experience is more fun sitting at the tapas bar! If you go a little earlier, you can just walk in and take a seat! As for El Quim de la Boqueria, you just have to wait for a seat to open up. Try to avoid going on a saturday... loads of tourists! Hope this helps! :)

    • @lisagrear9079
      @lisagrear9079 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jaycation Just one more question. Do most Tapas bars close in the afternoon? Is so, for how long? Thx

    • @Jaycation
      @Jaycation  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the touristy areas they don't. If you go to neighborhoods like Gracia, u may experience more of that. But places like Ciudad Condal, Cerveceria Catalana & Vinitus stay open. (Best Tapas Bars in my opinion) Don't hesitate to ask if you have anymore questions, I'd love to help!

    My wife and I are planning a trip to Barcelona in October. How was the feel as far as crime (pickpockets) compared to Rome, Berlin, London, etc?

    • @Jaycation
      @Jaycation  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Always be aware and be safe. Especially in crowded areas like Las Ramblas and the metro. Use zippered pockets and always keep your phone in your control. I lived there for 2 years and never got pickpocketed but numerous people i knew who visited got pickpocketed in metros and las ramblas simply by letting their guard down for half a second.

    • @mbarekahachach68
      @mbarekahachach68 5 ปีที่แล้ว
