4yrs later and Joker 2 basically confirms he in fact, wasn't the Joker..
I got the feeling that the main character was originally written as being just some guy but the studio said, "This will sell a whole lot better if we make him an iconic character. He's a professional clown, how about the Joker?"
Agreed 😂
Kind of like what happened with Terminator Salvation. It was turned into a Terminator movie after the script was around for years.
Yeah, agree completely. This became a huge hit and critically loved but I really think it made no sense at all connecting it to Joker and Batman. It is one of those films where you feel that you are just missing something everyone else gets, because this made no sense as a joker movie.
@user-iv8hm6ui4l Is there an interview or article or something where I can see that?
Nope. Todd Phillips wrote this movie specifically for the joker Because comic book movies were at it's peak with the avengers and he knew an original idea wouldn't work
I'm so glad its not just me, all the reviews are like "omg its amazing hes the best joker" but he was nothing like the joker at all.

I wouldn't classify the positive comments as being "Politically Motivated" this comment reads as if a child wrote in hoopes of being viewed as an adult.
No what this the positive comments reflect is an industry desire to gernerate so much hype that it results in immense Box Office revenue and award nominations.
One thing that had me confused is how the Joker is 30 years older then Bruce. By the time Bruce becomes Batman, Joker is already in his 60’s.
He isn't 30 years older. Bruce is like 10 and Joker is like 30 something on this movie probably. More like 20ish years.
Bruce looks 10 in this movie and Joker looks mid to late 40s. Joaqion Phoenix is 45
It’s a stand alone movie not connected to the other dc movies
Joaquin was 44-45 when filming Joker, and his character looks that age. So I think we can assume that Arthur is more than 30 years older then Bruce. And if Bruce becomes batman somewhere after 25, Joaquin joker will be in his 60s.
@@stefanmikkelsen5998 there is no Batman it’s a stand alone movie
The thing that’s bad in my opinion is, The joker is one of if not the most evil comic book villains out there. And they kinda made it seem like he’s a good person but hes broken. But in reality he’s a complete psycho who will kill anyone without caring
True, the only "joker" thing about this movie is the title.
Its almost like a commentary on what normies think of people who like comic book characters like The Joker.

Thanks for this video, I also can't imagine this character they've shown in the movie could ever become THE Joker, who manipulates people, unpredictable, intimidating, plan way ahead of things, and always prepared for his escape from any situation, as you said controls the chaos. The Joker movie could have been a way better movie if it wasn't called the Joker and they are not trying so hard to sell it as it's about the comic book character. But Joaquin Phoenix played great the awkward, clumsy sociopath who is imagining taking revenge on others for things his mind created.
Thing is I never felt like at all that the film was trying to sell it as a Joker film. Like forget about the title of the film act like it's something else. Take out that it's set in Gotham replace it for any other US city. Take out that he calls himself the Joker at the end. And then lastly pretend that Thomas and Bruce have completely different names like call them Jon and Mike Smith. Do all that and nobody would even think it's a Joker film or had any sort of connection to any comic book at all. Those would be very very minor changes to make and wouldn't change the film one bit. So to me that is how little the film itself was trying to sell it as a comic book movie. It was just WB and DC that were selling it as that. While it was clear as day that Todd Phillips had zero interest in making an actual comic book film. Instead he just had always wanted to make a film like this. Pretty sure he himself even came out and said basically exactly that. That this was a film he already had written and come up with and that it never involved Joker or anything to do with comics.
Yeah this Joker felt more like an autistic Joker rather than a psychopath Joker.

Good review. In stories like "The Killing Joke", the man who would become The Joker was gradually undone by a series of unfortunate events. Arthur did go through the same kind of stuff, but considering how he had been portrayed right from the start of the movie, I didn't feel that he was being undone; he was more like an accident waiting to happen.
In stories like “The Killing Joke”
joker specifies that he remembered things different, not specifically sure about it. It’s just the most recognizable backstory of Joker.
TheFerBoi 1 yeah but it’s really great and would be a good movie
This is a night and day difference between The Killing Joke and Joker, no comparison imo, The Killing Joke is one of the best scripts ever written, with a great, meaningful story, with tona of possible and plausible interpretations on different aspects... Also, very cool how the story develops along with characters, with two stories progressing together... In "Joker" you just get a take on a character whose only use is to show how mad people nowadays aren't helped, the guy does nothing, it's just stuff happening to him, start to end...
I kinda picture Joker as the clown telling one version of his backstory.
I really don't like the joker's origin in killing joke. It's so bland. He fell into a toxic tank and then he became crazy. Like what? Sure, his life is bad but they didn't focus on that aspect enough. Also his life isn't even that bad. Joker in 2019 had worse
I wouldn’t say this movie is necessarily an origin story for The Joker rather than a character study on how a person could eventually end up becoming someone like The Joker.
but an origin story IS a character study. Also, this movie is posed as Arthur Fleck pre-becoming the Joker so it's definitely an origin story. A character study anyways is supposed to show a logical line of events and character changes that lead to the character we all know. But we don't really see Arthur Fleck really actualising himself until the very end, and even then it still doesn't feel like he's complete or accurate to the traditional Joker. Like, all his decisions are impulsive, not methodical. And sure, there are villains that are purely impulse over logic, creating them as "loose-canons" for the superheroes to try and utilise emotional intelligence to make them come to their senses. But The Joker was never that. He's always been methodical and witty, just PORTRAYED as chaotic. He just creates chaos as his means of doing stuff. Any form of chaos or significant event Arthur Fleck creates is purely accidental, almost like he just happened to participate in it. But in the comics and previous movies, The Joker is the author of chaos and confusion. Ugh this movie shouldn't of ever been made because all it did was prove that dude-bro's don't know how to follow emotional or logical queues of storytelling
It was a bad character study though, he’s just crazy so his actions aren’t really coherent enough to be interesting and compelling. The themes are boring and weak. It’s just very meh.
@@joehopkins8799 Yea it's why I disliked the movie so much. As if your gonna make a Joker film of any sort I want to at least be able to imagine the man as the Joker. Yet with Arthur even in 15 to 20yrs I could never imagine him going toe to toe with Batman. I can imagine him being able to come up with some plot that kills hundreds. I can't imagine him getting under Batman skin and pushing him to his limits mentally or physically and by physical I don't mean him fighting Batman I just mean the trails he puts him through whether that is him using other villains to fight him or just some ordeal he puts him through. I can't imagine Arthur ever gaining follows can't imagine him ever convincing Harley Quinn to fall in love with him. He's just an idiot mostly and no way in hell is a man his age with his mental health gonna magically become smart and methodical out of the blue. He also has very little to any charisma and I can't really recall and single memorable thing he said in this film. Unlike the Joker from the comics, animated series, video games or other films where they have so many memorable lines.
Like why the hell did people rally behind him and start a revolt. Just because he shot a few rich assholes and then a late night host. People aren't gonna rally behind you just for shit like that. So it just feels flat and like he just got lucky that his actions caused any sort of ripple effect at all. While other versions of the Joker would be using people like Arthur as his followers. He would prey on weak minded people or mentally sick people and make them feel like they were special to be working with him. They he understood them that he would have their best interest. That the world has been unfair to them yet he is the answer they need. While Arthur is just like ohh wow people are doing shit because I killed a few men.
This takes place in like the 70s so I'm pretty sure Arthur fleck won't become the joker, but will inspire the actual joker. Since there are riots at the end and stuff.
You hearing the people involved talking about its a "character study" and using it as a defense for it not being boring doesnt make it any more interesting

Timothy Murray So why even call it the Joker? The movie literally sold itself on being this realistic dark take on the Jokers origins. I thought your overall take was spot on. Not only did I feel like this character was never the Joker, it was impossible that the character could ever turn into the Joker in the future, either. It was more a dark movie about someone with very low intelligence who suffering from serious emotional and other psychological problems. There were a couple of moments in the movie when he was unpredictably dangerous, such as when the short man (i.e., with dwarfism) was trying to get out of the apartment after Arthur killed their former co-worker, and when the female neighbor he had imagined having a relationship with started to freak out when he was in her apartment. However, those were intense scenes because Arthur seemed unpredictable from being so mentally and emotionally disabled, which is such a far cry from the conniving and ingenious mastermind of chaos that is such an essential characteristic of the Joker. This character simply did not have the IQ to be able to transform into the Joker, and I would have enjoyed it more had there been no references to Joker or Batman, and it was simply a psychological drama about a man in a clown suit suffering from mental and emotional problems.
He doesn't come across as particularly intelligent but I wouldn't describe him as dumb either. This is a movie about a man who feels so abused, neglected, and unoticed by the people around him that he sees no alternative but to become completely nihilistic and vengeful, and in the end finally accepting that his life is "nothing but a comedy". I could see this joker eventually becoming an intelligent criminal, not overnight but a sequel to this movie could show his rise to being someone worthy of the title of gotham's "clown prince of crime". I could easily see that happening as long as they don't rush it. He can't go straight from shooting Murray to pulling off a bank heist, he'll have to start smaller. I think that would be cool to see. Kind of like a joker version of breaking bad.
Also I think it's his emotional problems that make him seem less than bright. We often assume naive, kind natured people to be idiots but I think that's an unfair assessment of his character. I don't think his nearly as simple minded as he appears to be, he just has a simple minded sense of morality which his mother instilled in him. It's all very black and white to him.
@@clayton7993 I think Walter White’s transformation to Hisenberg was better. I don’t think you could compare the two. I prefer a intelligent joker.

Raising hell everywhere, being increasingly obsessed and lunatic about this pointless things for "fun", making enemies just to trample them. Then this reaches its peak when he grows up and finds Batman. Then the story could go into the love-hate relationship between them, why it all matters to the Joker. Francis Fazio I understand why you think that
If you think that Arthur Fleck is the one who inspires the Joker, doesnt become Joker himself, it would make more sense, because Arthur is alot older than Bruce, also even he had changed through times, he seemed a bit unlikely to become a criminal mastermind like Joker.

Origin story
Man, you hit the nail on the head. I have been trying to tell people this for months and they look at me like I'm crazy. The name of this movie should have been Arthur because I still haven't seen the Joker in this movie. If people want to suspend their belief and think that he could one-day rival Batman then have at it, but nothing in this movie even remotely hints at him having the mental capacity to do so.
This movie sucked and you're right about that not being the joker. What got me was the Joker's power, to me, is being complete unaffected by anything. You can hit him, arrest him, insult him, nothing gets through. Even when you think you're getting him it's a part of his plan. This guy was an emotional marshmellow. Everything got to him, even not getting to make pedo faces at someone's kid he didn't know on a bus effected him emotionally. I know they were trying to show all the 'bad stuff' that happened that caused him to 'snap', but we saw the snap and he still ended up being a dumber less interesting self loathing loser. Like you said, stepping outside of the movie how does this guy end up being an arch-manipulator or develop the ability to test philosophy and ethics when he can't even take care of himself without his mom lol. This guy couldn't even break out of a bus and I'm supposed to believed he'll break out of Arkum over and over.
When those detectives were chasing him he caused a fight on that train in order to avoid them. The character does seem quite clever in my opinion.

My friends all said they loved the movie when we got out of the theatre, and I was baffled - I thought it was obvious how bad this movie was. I thought it was both boring and uncomfortable to watch, which made the whole ordeal painful. My biggest gripe was - like you said - they completely messed up the Joker's character. I'm all for creativity and thinking outside the box, but to me the Joker is smart, cunning - almost confident, in a way - and definitely nothing like the movie's Joker. It all just felt like a missed opportunity. There's no way this Joker would be able to take over Gotham.
Anyway, rant over. Keep up the good work!
@Wernher von Braun This is not a JOKER MOVIE!
Everything wrong with this movie:
- Lazy story
- Slow pacing
- Arthur kills people bc of feelings; the real joker killed either bc he enjoyed it or to toy with batman
- Arthur is a weak, depressed 40 y o Mamas boy; the real joker is a witty mastermind with a skillset.
- Every character except for Arthur is trash.

I think this joker movie was really just meant to be a standalone story that doesn’t integrate into a greater DC universe. If this was meant to the the jump off point into the next DC chapter it’s a major fail. But if this is a story about a guy who becomes the joker and that’s all- it’s crazy good.
Phoenix did an absolutely amazing performance for sure. But the writing is totally off. They should have gone for a more "Good Will Hunting" type story
Agree 100%! It's the writing. His acting was brilliant but his lines are lacking.
Something about this movie was off, cant explain it. Didn't like it though.
The performance and the score CARRIED this movie. Everything else was alright though for me.
Baba Yaga exactly how I feel about the movie too. Look at it this way. The Godfather was Micheal Corleone’s origin story and that movie had way more going on.
In the killing joke, joker didn't start as a criminal mastermind. He had to get stepped on and pushed around until he hit the acid. And even after leaving the acid he doesn't just become a criminal mastermind. He had to work his way up and figure it out until the time Batman started doing what he does AND THEN the joker starts unleashing what he's learned. This isn't the joker we know. It's just the beginnings of a joker we may eventually know
Thank you! Arthur becomes The Joker by the end in his mindset, and he's perfectly poised to turn his now villainous mindset into a supervillain; but that takes time. Another movie would make the transition seemless.
I also would hate if they tried to pull some: "he's not the Joker, but is the InSpIrAtIoN for the Joker", because that would just invalidate Arthur's journey; and it would gatekeep The Joker as like this: "mythological figure", when we've already seen, and accepted, ridiculous portrayals of the character.
Good analysis and critique. I ultimately feel like this movie is essentially Taxi Driver with Joaquin Phoenix playing the joker. It seems like they're trying too hard to make it THE story of how the joker went over the edge when the psychology is wrong...the Joker is not a mentally ill, awkward, and dumb villain. At the end of this movie, could anyone be convinced of his diabolical genius? He's supposed to be Jesse James, not robert de niro in Taxi Driver. Society didnt push the joker into being a villain...the joker makes this choice because he WANTS to do that. I wanted to see why he would make that choice but i got a political statement about the ills of society instead.
That being said, Joaquin phoenix is indeed a great actor haha.

I have watched this movie 5 times and I've sat and thought about it more times than I can actually remember, each time I watch it I try to see it in another perspective which only leaves me more confused than the last time I watched it.
The "Joker" in this movie has none of the traits that we know and love the character for, no intelligence, no charisma, no leadership qualities. We are meant to believe that this character can take on Gotham and it's Dark Knight, but it seems that the city of Gotham has defeated him, truth be told. And are we to believe (as Todd Philip's as said) that Arthur is only making way for the real joker to be inspired by him? It makes no sense to me, possibly explains the meeting between arthur and Bruce during the movie which I personally don't buy for a minute, it just opens up the theory that someone nearer to Bruce's age (bare in mind Arthur is around 35yrs old) is waiting in the wings to be a copycat joker?
To sum it up after watching this movie time and time again trying to understand it, it seems to just focus on mental health issues and they've just thrown a clown in the mix and called it joker. Still on the brighter side Heath Ledgers Crown remains in tact, his Joker was legendary also we have a new Batman movie let's hope and pray it's not wish wash of ideas like this Joke of a movie. The one statement that seems to stick with this movie is the line "You wouldn't get it" and I don't...
Well said. This is just a movie about a guy with serious mental and emotional problems, and he does not possess the intelligence, charisma, or leadership skills to be able to transform into the Joker.
That's because, and I mentioned more in another comment, this isn't about Joker as a *man* - but the Joker as a *concept* that questions the systemic inequality in our modern American society, and critiques it. It says "there can't actually be a Joker, the Joker is instead the social phenomenon that Batman fights against, and fights to understand, because it's also a part of who he is."
@@RBEmpathy yeah rite, and why call it 'Joker' then? if it has almost Zero to do with real Joker? oh i tell you why, just to destroy the real cool and awesome of a character that real joker is. with its charisma chaos and coolness. but just to say - 'hes just a complete loser that just have some mental problems'

That's because it isn't meant to be about the Joker we know. If I remember correctly it was stated that this was a standalone, outside of normal DC universe and stuff. I really didn't watch this expecting the Joker we already know.

@@snakeyman5560 I just thought every villain not including emperors,space-conquereros and high-egotistal villains, should'nt really be noticed as a villain needs to be defeated by a hero and if the villain is not known by the public it would make it harder for the hero to find out who they are,now I'm not saying their alter-ego citizen personas should'nt be recognized because that'd just be a green goblin/lex luthor story and those are good. And if the villain's alter ego is popular it'd be really tricky for the hero and in lots of occasions the hero could be seen as a menace. If you count henchmen and mercenaries like the joker's henchmen from the animated series or the mercenaries vilgax hired from ben 10 , then yes they can be noticed and that'd become a story where if the villain's identity is still unknown to the hero he would have to find a way to negotiate with the mercenary and specifically the mercenary since henchmen would'nt really be a go-to storyline for this type of "find out the villains identitiy" storyline and together with that the hero would also have a couple of issues trusting the mercenary.

It's an interesting perspective to say the least, I think part of me thought this aswell.
But i'd prefer this Joker be an Inspiration to the real Joker due to the gap in age between Bruce & the Joker.
The problem with this point of view is that there's nothing in the movie to show it , it would be nice if there was a hint of intelligence, I mean him building a gadget or messing around with chemistry, hell even a line about how he used to be so smart would have made this more legit.

Agree with everything except for one thing... you said the movie is good, it's not. Acting and cinematography are good but the writing is barbaric and cringeworthy. Film vomits it's "themes" in your face and leaves no subtlety or cleverness in it's approach. On top of all this it botches it's main character and now mainstream audiences believe this to be an accurate portrayal doing a great injustice to a master crafted villain. A very amateur film made by a very mediocre director.
Not only great injustice to a master crafted villain, but also horrible, horrible injustice to the whole psychiatry by yet again showing the stigma that personality dissorder leads to violent behaviour. The writing is really horrible.
I totally agree with almost all of that! I think Todd Phillips is a decent director, but that he should stick to comedies (I enjoyed Hangovers 1 and 3. 2 shouldn't have been made).
Director said he wanted to remake Taxi Driver but no studio wanted to give him funding for it. Since anti hero movies like dead pool showed that people like anti heroes and this director was like ok I want to remake Taxi Driver but no studio's want's that so I'll just slap joker's name on the same script and just add in the clown/joker parts. This is why it doesn't feel like a joker movie because it's actually just a remake of Taxi Driver. This also explains the low IQ which goes against the type of villain joker is being a mastermind archetype but fits inline with the lead in Taxi Driver. That's why it makes an awful joker origin movie because it has nothing to do with any of the joker's origin stories or theories that are already out there.
Yeah, that's spot on. It doesn't feel like a Joker movie because the writers didn't actually want it to be a Joker movie. They just called it Joker for more publicity and attention. That's why it doesn't feel like The Joker we all know and love.

It is the joker movie
OH MY GOD, YES.
I am SO glad I am not alone in this. It has been 5 years since that atrocity came out and my god, does it effin' suck. It makes no sense and it is in no way, shape or form a Joker movie. It has nothing to do with the Joker, the Batman or anything else in the slightest.
It is just some mentally ill guy. Which, like, okay? Good for you? You made a movie about a mentally ill guy who gets abused and neglected by everyone around him because he's weird and different and socially awkward. But that's not the Joker.
There was nothing that could have been in any way connected to the Joker. Artur is stoopid, the Joker is incredibly smart. He's weird, but not Joker type of weird. He's not cunning. He's not competent. He's not charismatic. He's not well versed and linguistically gifted. He's just a mentally ill guy with Tourettes. And even that doesn't seem like Tourettes, which looks very different from what you can see people who have it are like, but I won't comment in that much due to my lack of knowledge.
If someone took you to see this movie and they never told you what movie it is, they never showed you the poster for it, you never had any mention of the Joker and the movie wasn't allowed to show the movie name anywhere or mention Gotham, NO ONE would EVER think for a second that this was a movie about the Joker. What they would see is a guy who's not all there, who gets abused his whole life and he decides he has had enough. He genuinely just wanted love and attention, but never got it. So he takes matters into his own hands and the movie ends. What you learn is basically not to be an a-hole to others, because you never know what thex are going through and they don't deserve to be treated badly. Be kind is the message. Cool. That is what the movie should have been, not this.
A little side note. Arthur is also a bit of an a-hole who thinks he's better than everyone else and that he is a misunderstood genius who never had the chance to be famous, because people don't understand his brilliance, which is actually just stupidity and a lack of self awareness. That is why I wasn't that sympathetic for him, except for the parts where he was beaten and abused needlessly.
I understand your point AngryJoe also has it but basically, in a different story I don't think it's fair to compare it with other superhero movies, anyway good to see you are still uploading video man

The character in this movie has an IQ that is well-below average, no charisma, no ability to be a criminal mastermind (let alone any kind of mastermind), and no leadership skills. It's basically a dark movie about someone suffering from mental health issues, and they've called it "Joker" even though the character is so far from possessing any of the characteristics of the Joker. Even the real Joker's laugh is meant to be sadistic, but this character does it when he feels uncomfortable because of an uncontrollable psychological condition.
Why you don’t like it is because the joker is much more realistic!! The mental health is on point ! There is reason! There is society! And there is a realistic joker who is oppressed!, and want revenge for it!. Nowadays when someone kills people they never get away with it !, it’s not a retarded mastermind clown guy that you see on DC! It FUCKING REALISTIC!!! There is no super power! Except fucking rage!! That’s why we like it ! Thats what makes it real!. All you want is him to do some bombshell trap home alone bullshit ! And ofc u like the suicidal squad joker
@Ali Shabbiri pls shutup..with that shit. All humans get oppressed in different ways. Don’t give a fuck if his white , black, blue or green! He is suffering from disorders, anxiety, laughing syndrome, and abused. So it should be over hyped
@Ali Shabbiri :) if u don’t have any other reason why this movie is bad, just fuck off❤️
@Ali Shabbiri have u heard about an actual human being going through chronic mental illness 🤡
I felt sorry for THIS Joker...
Real Joker is not a relatable character. This joker instantly became "Literally me" character for abused people.
This isn't a "Joker" movie, but an Elseworlds Joker movie.
I went into this movie thinking that too, but I can't say Elseworlds and chuck away my feels this is just a guy in clown make up who thinks society is bad. Plus I don't feel like we can use this as an excuse or rebuttal if the director didn't intend for that (I doubt Todd Phillips even know what Elseworlds is).
legend 4 life it’s a great excuse actually
I agree with everything hes saying this joker was a lifetime movie
Lol @ the accuracy
Speak english
love your videos, amazing perspective on so many movies. With this one I had a different view personally (I know you have a follow up) I feel jokers joke is exactly what you said.. It's all a lie he's telling the doctor in the final scene. The shift in camera colour/style shows that either the entire film or the final interview scene exist and the other does not. I took the joke to be the entire story was a lie, it did not reflect in any way what his back story was, the shot of Wayne's murder shows he was there and has a memory of it, and his slaughter of the doctor shows his actual evil side. The joke was that she had sat listening to the story taking it at face value. Who knows though, you're watching stuff on a whole different level to me. Thanks for putting all this great content up
You're review is phenomenal!
It embodies everything how I felt from watching the movie. You gave it credit where it was due but also really catch the most glaring point of who inferior and incompetent he is. He never rose to display intellect
So it begs the question... Why is everyone overlooking that? Why is no one catching how much of a simpleton he is? I'm curious.
1) Sympathy. 2) Phoenix's acting performance. 3) Grimdark movie about a mentally disabled character in a city of rude, classist people. 4) Phillips confused Joker's mental condition, because it's vague in the original comics. He thinks Joker has intellectual disability, depression or schizophrenia (more sympathetic, like "Sling Blade," "Forrest Gump," "The Gardener," etc.) when he shows antisocial personality disorder, narcissism (most movie villains, especially serial killers in slasher flicks) and Science-Related Mimetic Disorder (mad scientists' condition). All that tends to bias and distract the viewers from Joker's non-canon mental incompetence and social awkwardness. His comic book condition would have made the movie look like Scarface-meets-Saw, with Bond villain tech. To set him up as an archenemy of Batman, he would have to be a teenager, perhaps a creepy child prodigy and delinquent, with gadgets made of junk. It would better fit the love child of Thomas Wayne theory. To prove his mother was stalking Thomas, scenes of her watching and following him and Thomas and Martha getting love letters and crank calls from Penny Fleck, some CGI hallucination scenes and security escorting her out of Wayne Manor would be needed. Dream sequences resembling erotic thriller love scenes would show Penny's delusions. The Flecks knew where the Waynes lived, so adult Arthur would have confronted Thomas sooner than at 37 and would have demanded child support, a trust fund and his inheritance. He would have used his advanced technology to get past any security Wayne had. This Joker planned capers since high school, so after losing his clown job and bombing at the comedy club, he would have pulled a bank heist, like the Dark Knight version, with his cult following. He would have planned and led the riot, of course.
