It’s crazy seeing the didact erring on the side of mercy, and voting against wiping out humanity in the council scene. Makes him kinda tragic
Well it was their strength and their hubris. That scene takes place at the very beginning of the Human Forrunner war, when the Didacts noble ideals have been relatively untested. By the time of their victory the Didact had lost all of their children in the war with the humans, and so his plan to genetically regress the humans was largely born of vindictiveness, while still trying to stick to the ideal of the Mantle. Just, without the same Noble idea to try and get humanity "to stand with the galaxy" as he'd once desired.
The other problem was that the Forrunners also couldn't recognise the danger of the Flood until it was too late. Unlike the Humans, they initially thought it was just a biohazard to be contained. Not a hyper intelligent species that needed to be fought with no holds barred.
The Didact's story never fails to touch me. So much wasted potential, so much that was good gone rotten... Sadly, he was too far gone into madness by the time he was sealed away, even if that madness arose from the weigth of responsability, from the Sword of Damocles ever dangling over his head.

And in age reversal there is a concept known as longevity escape velocity meaning that as our scientific understand and technology advance exponentially then age reversal will be constantly improved ones it is achieved. Perhaps we will live a thousand years or longer.

The reason that the forerunners and the humans couldnt see eye to eye is because the forerunners were foolish, in the wiki it states that the forerunners did not see the flood as a sentient race that should be fought against using weapons of war, the forerunners believed the flood was merely a sickness, a parasitic disease that needed to be contained.
Instead of fighting a war the forerunners were using methods of disease containment against the flood which proved inneffective and failed because the flood was not a disease, by the time the forerunners realised their need to engage in warfare it was far too late.
Humans saw the flood as an enemy that needed to be destroyed from the beinning, humans saw the threat that the flood posed and tried to destroy it, and because they saw what the forerunners could not see the humans were punished for their actions.
The arrogance of the forerunners and their blind dedication to their mantle of responsibility ultimately led to their downfall and failure to protect the galaxy.
I don't understand this though.
In reality, when technology is that advanced, a small group could design a weapon to kill them all. If you're a purely biological species using built in physical weaponry you are no match for a spacefaring society complete with millions of colonies, gravity bending technology, and the ability to build planets and advanced droids.
Think of how tech evolves on earth. A gun allows a child to kill dozens of people. In 20 years, AI will allow a child to destroy a power grid.
If a serious group of people on a planetary government decided to fight them, it's over for them. Imagine all of earth using forerunner level technology against the flood. There's no way that every single person in a species thinks one way about the flood, they're sentient, they have opinions and individuality. At least one planet would have fought right away and sided with humanity.
Not to mention that human toy was fighting them.
No one would be using guns and trying to shoot the flood like that.
We would build huge armies of drones that would enter an area and do a super fast bioscan to detect flood and human. They would move in and deliver killing blows to every single flood simultaneously. We would develop a floodphage pathogen by altering the floods biology using forerunner tech (they had extremely advanced synthetic biology tech, which is why they could legit turn people into machines). We would genetically engineer the plants across multiple planets to produce little attack spore nanites for the flood.
The possibilities are endless. You can't invade on a spacefaring civilization that's THAT advanced without any kind of advanced tech. Simply trying to integrate organisms into your species using biology is not enough. They don’t have the advanced neural physics capabilities of the precursors and even they were defeated by the forerunners.

The covenant killing off their gods, like the forerunners killing off the precursors. The graveminds line by Jason Jones, 'I am a monument to all your sins'. All of it gone, because Frankie poisoned the lore, and forced Greg Bear to write amazing books to enforce this garbage change in the lore
Overall this story has everything. History, understandable motives, culture and pure roots as to how its constructed into what we play as a game. I play this game mostly for campaign and it's breath taking complexities, that become simple once understood. Also it takes place in Space, the fonal frontier. Which gives the story even more gravity and speaks volumes. The forerunners are by far one of the most interesting species, as being peacekeepers.
I find the library in a most intriguing and interesting character in the halo universe cheers for love wisdom and knowledge toward the end of the video she seems very sad

Ahh the 343 retcon where Frank O’Conner doesn’t understand the prexisting cannon of Humans being forerunners and he turned the forerunners into another species…. Bad times.

@@josephgoldstein4054 when Bungie ran things humans were forerunners, it was Joe Staten’s original vision. You can do your own research if you like research. But look at the Bungie media not the 343 media. Because it was heavily retconned by 343. The original Halo 2 ending concluding the entire series was the Arbiter finding a forerunner coffin in the ARC on earth and he was shocked to find it was an a human. Yes, the arc is on earth, not another place. It is poetic really. Humans were the ones that fired the rings then tasked Guilty Spark and the sentinels to repopulate the areas after the rings fired. The sentinels find the planet Earth, then start adding humans to the planet in Africa.
Another fact backing humans being forerunners is because Spark originally try’s protecting you, and says in Halo CE to Chief, “Last time you asked me, if it were my choice, would I do it? Having had considerable time to ponder your query, my answer has not changed. There is no choice. We must activate the ring.”
Spark says this because Spark mistakes you as another human. That human was one with the title “Didact”.
This is why you’re called a reclaimer and Spark also says in Halo 3 “You are the child of my Makers. Inheritor of all they left behind. You are Forerunner! But this ring... is mine!"
Again because forerunners and humans are the same species.
Marty O’Donnell the original Halo composer and Audio Director for the Bungie Reclaimer arc I quote: “Subtext? Wasn't it obvious? Humans are and will always be forerunner.”
The book Contact Harvest which was published after Halo 3 by Joe Staten also proves this too.
Jason Jones the Bungie founder also said humans are forerunners under their vision.
C3SABERTOOTH a youtube channel did a really good video of it. Where the original Bungie lead story board artist Lee Wilson released the storyboards of the original Halo 2 ending for C3SABERTOOTH to document the original stories. It’s really fascinating.
The whole plot got retconned by Frank O’Connor because he disagreed with Joe Staten after Halo 3. Microsoft/343 also wanted to change it into another species because it would be able to have more content for their future Reclaimer Arc with more factions.

Forerunners were always Humans under Bungie’s vision with Joe Staten as the lead writer. I would like to mention that Joe Staten is the founder of the Halo story. Without his imagination we wouldn’t have Halo’s story with 343 or Bungie to begin with.
This topic has really divided the community from people who started Halo with 343 and love the Forerunner books by Greg Bear/Frank O’Connor. Then on the otherside those who love the reclaimer arc story under Bungie who grew up with it in the 2000’s.
I suggest you do your own research if you really care about it.
But you cannot deny Joe Staten, Jason Jones (Bungie’s founder), Lee Wilson (lead storyboard artist), Marcus Leto (lead artist) and Marty O’Donnell (head audio director) all stated Forerunners were human under Bungie.
Marty O’Donnell even tweeted it last year saying quote Subtext? Wasn't it obvious? Humans are and will always be forerunner.
The original Halo 2 ending to end the entire series was the Arbiter finding a Forerunner coffin on the Arc on Earth. And being shocked to finding that it was a human body.

I've been a Halo fan for a long time and I'm glad Halo 4 is so in depth about the once-mysterious Forerunners.
That Didact returns in Halo Epitaph. After being Composed in the comics, which cured him of the corruption and insanity he'd gained from the Gravemind, the Didact was sent to the Domain. He managed to destroy the Warden Eternal and helped Cortana realize her mistakes and that she too had been affected for the worse by her captivity with the Gravemind, setting her on her destructive path. That was right before her confrontation with Atriox. At the end of the book, the Didact expels the surviving Created from the Domain and seals it off before finally finding peace and reuniting with his wife.
To think, the human-forerunner war lasted over a thousand years. And Forthencho was at least present before the battle of Charum Hakkor, which lasted 50 years, and he must have been in his 30's or 40's during the scene when cleansing the forerunner planet of the flood given his military position. This dude was that spry at about 80-90 years old, commanding the defense of the siege of Charum Hakkor. Wonder how long the ancient humans must have lived in the Halo universe. I wish there would have been a spin off game or series folling Forthencho, even a book series would have sufficed. We know so much about the forerunners but we know almost nothing about the ancient humans in the lore other than the regressed humans on Erde-Tyrene.

That was just the highest ranking member of some of their rates: masterbuilder (builders), Librarian (lifeworkers), Ur-didact (warrior servants). There are more rates as well and there is a counsel. In all honesty the masterbuilder is the most influential one here and decides a lot and convinces the counsel to do things. He is the one that made the halos because he knew it would make his rate more important

Here is a question, why didn't the forerunners preserve themselves like they did the other races?

They simply left the galaxy to rebuild their civilization as far away from the Milky Way as possible.
Why? They felt shame/embarrassment to have been so utterly annihilated by what was essentially a plague that they couldn’t bare to return to the stars they failed.
