How do you feel about Harakiri? Do you have a favourite Masaki Kobayashi film? Which films would you recommend similar to Harakiri? Thank you for watching, and for helping the channel reach 20k subscribers!

I can't lie, I saw the remake probably 7 years ago. The hara-kiri scene was so shocking and intense that I had to take a minute. I didn't realize that it was a remake for a few years and kept telling myself I should actually watch the original. Someday I really should get around to it. Still, the remake stuck in my mind for a good few months.
I kept thinking of my dad's words watching this video about his thoughts after fighting in Vietnam and about patriotism. In a small burger bar that served unlimited peanuts leaving peanut shells covering the floor he said 'Patriotism is a word used by the old to send the young to die'.

The Takashi Miike remake is such an admirable, faithful tribute that I can't blame anyone for watching that version beforehand! I love that Miike can be such a wild, hyper-surreal eccentric director, but that he can also tell (and retell) these masterfully crafted period dramas and epics too. I absolutely love his 13 Assassins film (which is also a remake, but a very loose one). If you like the remake, you'll love the original. 😁
Your dad's right, I can't even begin to imagine how it would be to fight in Vietnam, but I'm not surprised he'd feel so critical of those with power like that.

@@YouHaveBeenWatchingFilms I forgot Takashi Miike was the director. I think that's what drew me to watch it since I had recently seen Dead or Alive and Ichi the Killer for the second time. Been awhile since I watched his movies.

A wonderful film, possibly the most intense scene of suffering ever. I love his folk horror anthology Kwaidan from the year after I believe.
EDIT: Congrats on reaching 20K subscribers, you certainly deserve it with all your great work, research, editing and, scripting. I know how much work that is and admire your ability to do it so consistently and for so long.

Kwaidan is fantastic! Hopefully I'll cover it one of these days. 😁
Thank you! It feels so encouraging to hear that, I really appreciate it. This week in particular has felt a bit hectic with piecing this video together, planning a live stream, and then working on the next video for the month of horror 😅

I have just included this film in my own most recent video. I just don’t like this as much as everyone else seems to. It’s good and the final fight is stunning, but I just don’t understand the (almost) unanimous praise this film gets.
Congrats on the channel’s success 👍
