only 25 mins into this pod cast, thank you so much bringing michael malice to our attention, the man is bang on the money, finally a sane human being, very rare these days, onto the rest now..)) wow 37 min am blown away, ps grew up bilingual now speak 4 fluently. ah ¨do what thou wilt¨ alistair crowley.
In regards to their "rules at the pool" analogy.. Who owns the pool? Who sets the rules? Who ENFORCES the rules? What about the land around the pool? What if someone decides to draft a conflicting set of rules? What agency are people who disagree with the rules, left with to shape the system in a manner they deem to be more agreeable?
I'm only 30 mins in and so I might have to edit this, but the issue of anarchism comes from the inability to stop groups from foruming. Any Anarchist community must be individual and as soon as a group of people start to develop rules and laws around their community you start to develop an overarching structure known as government. Weak people group up to stop the strong from using their power against them and this group always makes rules for staying or being disenfranchised. Therefore Anarchy only exist as an idea and as the temporary when there is nothing else. When groups of people come together and make rules for their community it becomes a government. I think a structure or system can be made which keeps the powers that be off the wheel. That's why you have three branches of government and the power of the government is supposed to be balanced between three different groups. There are many issues with this one being that because laws are so hard to pass you get into a government that only two forces exist so that your laws can be passed vs the others laws not be passed. Which has lead to a dysfunction of the system overall. Also laws being striped back that do no pertain to modern issues is another problem. No one has the ability to look back and take laws out that have no functionally or worst case dysfunction in the system of modern governance. So we slowly make laws and sometimes the next administration strips the previous laws away but eventually over 200 years it will become over bloated without any real ability to take away all the laws or a real function of government to administer review of those law which have become void do to the era its in. Ok obviously this was recorded before the debate, but can you believe it was that bad? like not even in the realm of decent that these guys wish it were, but just an awful mess in which everyone including the moderator is embarrassed.
"The problem with democracy is that those who need leaders are not qualified to choose them" - Michael Malice This is probably going to give me nightmares.
Okay Michael, what's your solution to this age old question, aside from pithy soundbites? The master of knocking down the Jenga tower, let's see him come up with a better design.
Josh Wallace But why do we assume competent people don’t need or want leaders? There are many competent people like Lex who would benefit from some sort of teacher, mentor, or leader. I’m starting to think this podcast series is more just about showing us a window of Lex’s journey of learning about life from all of these wise men/women in fields inside and outside AI research. Maybe I’m thinking of leader as teacher/mentor too much in this sense.
I really think these two should have a regular show together. They have great chemistry and perspective and balance each other out very well. Great conversation.
Really? Most of what I heard from Lex is that he doesn't have adequate knowlege, knows little on the topic, will have to read up on it to the point , or he would regurgitate some tripe the media tried to sell us that were self evident lies the moment they were broadcast.
it always feels to me like it's rehearsed, but I don't think it is. he just really knows what he wants to say. he does practice by having a podcast and a lot of public conversations, but damn this guy can very very quickly give an answer to a question he was asked without even flinching
@@chicoktc he actually addresses that pretty often when someone says “that’s a good rehearsed line, but say something original.” He’ll come back with “ that is a huge compliment because I am actually speaking impromptu, and if I seem so polished that you think I rehearsed, that says great things about my speaking ability”
@@shilohsanders5475 even that response sounds rehearsed haha. But I know it's not I'm a big fan, I watch everything he puts out, and he is like that about any topic any day. So yeah, it's a super skill he has
Oh my god. I never could have expected this. I am excessively excited to witness this strange and wonderful intersection that could only be made manifest in 2020. Keep surprising us Lex, your podcast is becoming one of the best that there is.
26:55 Michael Malice: "...this lock down gave some very nefarious people some very valid data about how much people will put up with under pressures from the state."
Just adding some two-cents here that this also gave a lot of really smart people ideas of how to combat state or governmental pressure that are already in design or development. This is a like a data security game between developers and antagonists. This information comes open ended and all of us, whether or not we're actively building counter-measures, are in the game. I believe our current case in 2019/2020 shows that we've made significant progress (compared to the last 10,000 or so years of human organization) in our abilities ("our" I guess is the proletariat in this case) within this game, but there are a number of vulnerabilities that must be patched to avoid tipping the scales to those "nefarious" actors.

After lex talked about his comments on Joe organs podcast I definitely want to make a habit of commenting something positive. Even though Joe Rogan told him not to look at the comments I feel like seeing positive comments on your videos pushes you to try even harder on your content. Love y’all.
This is the first Lex Fridman video I have ever watched, I'm embarrased to admit I've never heard of him. I really enjoy his perspective on things, and his willingness to try to understand how and why Michael Malice thinks the way he does, and his genuine confusion when he hears about something that he finds to be odd or curious really demonstrates to me what a pure soul he is. I look forward to seeing more of Lex's videos, and am now subscribing to his channel.
JackCojiSan I’m not sure if they’re ready for Joscha!! Perhaps some Richard Dawkins or Penrose for starters and gradually move to the Kellis’, wolfram’s & Bach’s! Although there is many great significances in each episode, Joscha Bach is like Gods’ ontologist for all epistemologies.
I always knew Lex was a good guy with great intentions for humanity and always tries to look at the positive side of humanity...but Michael showed me how naive he really is. Great episode.

I think this is the best podcast I've ever seen. I agree with Malice on some things, and with Lex on others, and sometimes I agree with neither. @metalshredmetal1 “next time just listen with a critical ear” may be one of the funniest comments I’ve ever read. You should attempt to hear, with those ears, the words which are streaming out of your own mouth.
Yeah, totally agree. I feel like Mr. Malice's initial comment there is more a generalization of all Americans based on a caste difference between him and the gentleman he's referring to and less on a Russian/American difference.
A debate is an argument between two opposing sides that are not willing to change their minds, with a winner and loser decided at the end. This is a discussion between two perspectives with the goal of learning, not winning. A debate is a debate, a discussion is a discussion.
I'm an American, and would never even think of opening the door while at a friend's house or apartment under any circumstances, just like wouldn't answer their phone or open their fridge.
I agree and I’m not sure if I know anyone who would. Like this, I feel like Michael made many large generalizing and inaccurate brushstrokes as presuppositions that flawed downstream arguments.
Just because someone is unstoppable does'nt make them top of anything other than the game they are playing. I like Malice, but he is an extreme extrovert that is intelligent with hints of " ruler technique with a smirk" (trollish behavour that is somewhat disrespectfull). He is very hard to controll by anyone. That is dangerous with the wrong ideas.
he's a joker and he's an intelligent smart ass. Ultimately anarchy doesn't work because somebody wants power and the state is a compromise on that unfortunate fact of mankind. Unfortunately, that's hard to tell someone nicely. Anarchists can be anarchists all they want until someone who makes their vote heard (by force) wrangles them up. Power abhors vacuums. Even if they don't make an official 'state' there will be some sort of power structure, probably a cartel. Maybe it'll evolve OPE they made the state again lol.
@@SaturnVII Cartels exist because laws exist. Plenty of anarchist communities have existed and thrived until GOVERNMENT comes to stop them from living peacefully. The government exists because they take money from the people without consent. People stop paying taxes, government runs out of money and ceases to exist, no one would work for a cartels when there are safer options and don't need protection from the government. Humans are naturally peaceful. That we are not is propaganda to control us and make us fear each other. We become corrupted by being taught to fear/hate/retreat from confusion and by having our consent removed from us. For humanity to evolve, I see only two options: Anarchy, or a form of government where each individual has a say or can have someone speak on their behalf and can remove their consent at any time. This would of course require the abolition of Federal governments (via simply businesses and individuals no longer paying taxes) and would have to start from neighborhoods and grow from there. (Ex: Neighborhood A has 3 different people speaking for those in their neighborhood, Neighborhood B has 4, 5 of these 7 consent to one of them represented them for the a larger neighborhood coalition, the other 2 pick another rep, so 2 people are now going to represent both neighborhoods. Keep going from there. No consent is removed. Every single person has something they agreed to speak for them and can remove consent at any time. The more we stop making excuses to take people's consent, the more trusting people will become and the less "grey area" situations would occur. It's just the math of the consciousness.)
@@Panaceamedia OK, whatever. I already said that anarchists can behave all they want until someone else comes to wrangle them all up. The relationship to the state is one of force, is this even up for debate? Humans may be peaceful by nature but they're also pretty damn disagreeable too and if everyone's off doing their own thing, then nobody's doing anything. And regardless of whether your perfect anarchist system works, it is an evaporating system that will be absorbed by government powers of any variety that see the need to. I'm a laissez faire guy when it comes to philosophy but I also really don't have this patience for "oh wah the government makes me stop squatting" like yeah, duh. And that's all if in your system you don't just make a de facto state at some point.
@@SaturnVII I did not think my commented warranted a "whatever." I'd have preferred an "okay boomer." Anyhow, we've been brainwashed for millennia that a system based on a foundation of force is necessary to build a society. This is false and will be our demise. If you make excuses why it's okay to remove consent from one group/person (or by proxy), someone will make an excuse why it is okay to take it from you. People are disagreeable after they've been punished for approaching confusion with curiosity and when their consent has been removed. The less this happens, the more effectively and peacefully people will work together. You are going in the wrong direction if you are still defend, or resigning, to societies built on a foundation of force. Kids see parents making excuses and go all in on acting hypocritical and thus the cycle continues.

Michael Malice is one of the only people online who I've come across who has made me question my beliefs. Every time I hear him and understand more about his point of view I move closer and closer to that same view myself.
Lex, I lover your interviews but this has to be one of the best. Sure, Malice can be a bit abrasive, but you have to actually listen to & understand what he’s saying and then it’s beautiful. You did a masterful job, especially given your lack of sleep. Loved it!
Lex elevates what I, at first, thought was most interesting about Joe Rogan.....which is to say Rogan's natural curiosity and willingness to sit down and discuss interesting topics with interesting people in a long format that affords the guest an opportunity to unpack their ideas. Rogan is really good at this. Lex is next level. Perhaps more importantly, Lex gives a much stronger impression of wanting to understand what the guest thinks, and thus provide the audience with a better understanding of what the guest thinks. Rogan is a smart guy who's interested in a wide variety of topics but his talent rests in juxtaposing what Rogan thinks against what the guest is articulating. Lex's superpower is an apparent genuine desire to get the guest to fully articulate what they think. Where Rogan pits himself against the guests ideas, Lex pits his lack of understanding against the guests ideas and generally only inserts "himself" to help the guest understand the potential limitations of a lay audience.
They’re very different animals. LF is too smart to have such mass appeal. The mouth breathers would struggle to get through a LF podcast. Thank you, Lex, for allowing Michael Malice to speak on your platform. He is one of the most important voices of optimism in a country full of pessimism and ignorance.
An often overlooked aspect of Michael Malice: He is a vocal optimist. I wish I could say that I share that view, but it is at the very least refreshing!

I cannot adequately express how tremendously helpful this CD has been on my spiritual journey!! Two thumbs up and 10 stars!
Yes!! It's not that Lex is "out of his league" as many have mistaken, it's the quiet measured approach Lex has that really does lend a dynamic to the conversation that brings out the best in both. I think many are missing the subtleties and stoic wit peppered throughout. The shared culture allowed Malice to shine in ways not seen in other interviews. Definitely up for a part 2!
I'm also a refugee from the USSR, grew up around LA, you should check out a book called "The Naked Communist" by Cleon Skousen. He warned about Marxist infiltration of America back in 1950's. Judging by the comments I've seen from you throughout this comment section, you have the education of a parrot. You speak many words while saying nothing.

Thank you.
Malice did a shit job explaining it tho. Which tells us he really doesn't understand chan culture. Before understanding tits or gtfo, you need to understand "there are no women on the Internet". In life women get treated well. The reason for that is tits. On the Internet the tits are not on display like in irl. Therefore there are no women on the Internet. On the same note, there are no men on the Internet either. If there were people would be a lot more polite like in irl for fear of getting their ass kicked. No women or men on the Internet. Rather the Internet is genderless. With this in mind, when a girl shows up on Chans starting the post with "as a woman" expecting it to get her extra privilege, as it does irl, the only logical next step would be for all the other anons to demand..... Tits. Or GTFO.
I had to listen to that 4 times before I knew what was going on and I was laughing the whole time. @unlocking your energy - thanks much for that explanation

It's not a wholly true statement, despite it being amusing and superficially true-sounding. I vote for someone who is competent at their job. I don't necessarily want to do the job myself, so I realise that I need somebody competent to do it for me. If everyone did everything for themselves, it would be so inefficient. Little would get done. that's why we have organisations and governments (in theory, and mainly in practice). Many people don't really know what is best for them or their country, so that part of it is true, but to say it as a sweeping statement for all people is the height of stupidity. He should choose a leader, otherwise he is admitting that he's also too stupid to. Therefore, why listen to his opinion? He does seem a fun and interesting person to talk to, though.
I've come back to this several times, and I think it's Lex's highest quality philosophical approach to an interview/discussion yet. I really like this take on the discussion of ideas.

This is such a naive take. We have been coexisting with tools that we created for most of our existence. Instructions written in Python are not going to be any different from a spear, a chisel, a rope, scythe, raspberry pi...
its probably because politics is messy, irrational and a very open system. If determined decisions could be guaranteed to have fixed outcomes (more or less) in politics, more and more intelligent people would take part in it. All these geniuses and prodigies don't venture into politics not because its difficult (they generally love difficult problems), its just because the solutions are inelegant unlike science and mathematics. The few who have, have created solutions that are ingrained in more rational software worlds (satoshi, vitalik)

I would just make an addendum to that statement, i think it's salvageable: "Those who need leaders are not necessarily qualified to choose them." I think that adds a bit of nuance
I think leadership is something that would naturally arise within anarchism, and to act like it’s a function of democracy and not human nature is wrong. Also to believe that our qualifications dictate our power of influence is a structure that naturally creates hierarchy and escapes from anarchism. I might be struggling here, literally NEVER encountered Michaels perspective before. !!
@@urin1337 it's a thought provoking idea intended to cause the mind to consider an alternative view. That's definitely not stupid. Just because you disagree with it or are unwilling to consider it doesn't make it stupid.
Michael's view on people and their opinions, as animals with emotions, is psychologically very useful. Given that one applies it to oneself first, to understand one's internal forces and how they want to react to external forces.
"nuanced conversation can only happen if we are patient with each other", that's how I got into your show, I think that sentiment is so important right now. You should definitely share your videos at Hive too. Your viewers would love it there and they'd come over if you did.
Wow 3:06 the candid nature of Lex is so endearing. I was just visciously attacked online by someone and it completely brought back being bullied in middle and early high school to the point of being suicidal. the ostracism and hatred was so intense I internalized it and became depressed for hours.
1:06:55 I think maybe Lex just doesn't understand that being "mean" to someone can be love if it is coming from the right place. "Tough love". If you are just nice to people all the time and give them validation for anything and everything you create spoiled brat monsters. Sometimes even taunting people can be healthy if it forces them to look at their selfish/bad behavior.

Malice is still a top representative for anarchy. Never seen anyone stop him at all.
Just because someone is unstoppable does'nt make them top of anything other than the game they are playing. I like Malice, but he is an extreme extrovert that is intelligent with hints of "
ruler technique with a smirk" (trollish behavour that is somewhat disrespectfull).
@@SaturnVII I did not think my commented warranted a "whatever." I'd have preferred an "okay boomer."
Anyhow, we've been brainwashed for millennia that a system based on a foundation of force is necessary to build a society.

@Fato DelaVeritas exactly. they are the "qualified" ones to choose leaders for others, but don't recognize that they are the ones who need them. e.g. believing that the internet is making everyone else less intelligent, then suggesting "banning 'viral' algorithms".
@@Arkantos117 the Security risks will be dealt with by coming innovation. Why should voting be harder, Why should People not Take the Initiative rather than politicians who can Simply lie. The people will take power and nobody will prevent it.
@@xjohnny1000 indeed.
@@Arkantos117 this is an extremely retarded argument. Maintaining useless effort that can be avoided is stupid. People will vote on issues whenever they like.
This is just great. Being what I can only describe as a "Stoic Libertarian", I am surprised to find I enjoyed an anarchists take. I could speak to either of these guys for hours.
Lex, your style is cutting-edge. Only the best deserve your time matey. Keep up the great work.
Have you ever red about anarchocapitalism?
Great to finally see the brothers Karamazov on a podcast together!
Malice is Ivan and lex is lebyadkin?
Lex I doubt you will see this but thank you so much for all that you are and the platform you provide. It's a real joy to watch the future unfold with all you good folks.
"So... you attribute that to your Russian upbringing, has opposed to you having deep psychological issues?"
I like 'tired Lex', he's way more straight to the point.
This is the longest I've ever been able to listen to Malice talk. Thank you for being a conduit to hearing him speak with less distraction.
Lex, you should have Dave Smith on. You will love what he has to say about anarchism and culture
Big yes
Dave does volunteerism/anarchism justice
And also Dave Smith the engineer who created the first polyphonic synthesizer 👀
What I love most is the great affection followers express towards Lex. I feel the same way. We may like Rogan, but we love Lex.
Rogan and Malice in the same week? Bravo my good man, bravo!
Thank you so much for not plastering your content with YT roll ads, Lex. I hope you know how appreciated that is 😊
These two, while disagreeing on many issues, are incredibly good at letting the other finish their thought. Very refreshing.
Even though research and teaching are conceptually distinct, I think that having professors (and advanced students) participate in research keeps them at the top of their game. It serves as demonstrable proof that they know what they're talking about, and that they're at the cutting edge of their field.
The comments on Chris Wallace being a good moderator didn't age well, but otherwise great conversation.
He was better than the ones I saw in '16. Back then it was "no holds barred". Wallace at least tried to stop the speakers from interrupting each other.
He was working with a 78 year old with dementia and a 74 year old toddler What did u really expect
@ No holds barred is fine. Siding with one candidate is not fine. Failing to ask challenging questions or press equally is not fine.
He is good but noone could've stoped what happened.
He was definitely biased towards biden. No doubt about it
“Those who need leaders are not qualified to choose them”
Love it!
Blux totally opened up on the second interview thank God I was getting worried with this one
Did Michael Malice vote?
Albert Gysels
If your asking a serious question, the answer is no he doesn’t vote. If your being cheeky well then kudos to you sir 😬
No. People are qualified to pick who governs them. That is what democracy is built on.
I've come back to this several times, and I think it's Lex's highest quality philosophical approach to an interview/discussion yet. I really like this take on the discussion of ideas.
Been listening to Lex all day and he definitely is an inspiration. Amazing listener.
great podcast :) most other podcasters actually have nothing to say and they talk for hours and hours. content like this is a breath of fresh air.
You guys had me going back and forth on this one causing me to understand my own beliefs better..good work 👌
This is by far the best duo and friendship dynamics on the internet
Holy shit this was a good podcast.... first time listener....
Thank you for being reasonable this time Comment Section. Appreciate you!
Same! I stumbled upon it through being a michael malice fan and I absolutely loved it, will definitely be checking out more of Lex's podcasts
You should see lex when he's rested, he was a bit off this podcast
Your constant sense of message of love, awe, curiosity and compassion are a true inspiration. Your vision of a future where we partner with AI in a positive, healthy way is truly the vision I share and I just want you to know I love you man, you are one in a million and the world needs more like you. Thank you Lex
This is such a naive take.
We have been coexisting with tools that we created for most of our existence. Instructions written in Python are not going to be any different from a spear, a chisel, a rope, scythe, raspberry pi...
@@olayinkaoladimeji approaching tools with a kind heart is never naive.. garbage in garbage out
This has been one of the best Podcast I've seen in a while, you watch this kind of discussion and end up like wow.
Two Geniuses. Love it
Love Micheal and Lex together. Those jokes are the most intelligent one :D Love from Poland !
"Mechanisms for social control are outsourced to low quality people.." woah. That just clicked.
Yup. Wow
its probably because politics is messy, irrational and a very open system. The few who have, have created solutions that are ingrained in more rational software worlds (satoshi, vitalik)
not even halfway through and this is one of the best podcast episodes I've listen to already.
This is one of the most interesting and thought provoking podcasts I've ever listened to.
i'm really gay for you right now
Did you skip all of the actual brilliant thinkers that Lex has had on his podcast?
I like someone who knows people and language well better than intellectuas.
That guy doesn't know nothing about political science at all,in fact his just a con-man that know how to impress uneducated teenagers at chans,he calls himself an anarchist while not being an anarchist lol, being anarchist doesn't mean only "i hate the governement"
@@svadia he only wants to hear what he wants to hear
Michael just made me rethink society and politics. Cool dude!
Malice is the best. Never get enough of him, he is never repetitive and always bring you to a more positive view of the world.
Lex, I love how sincere and authentic
you are. It’s amazing to feel so much connection with someone just through a podcast!
It kinda looks like Lex is talking to an older version of himself.
i can't stop smiling while watching this ep. love this conversation and breakdown and trying to understanding , love this bromance .
I have loved getting to hear from so many different people I wouldn’t have otherwise heard, thank you for doing your podcast Lex!
People I want to see Lex interview:
1) Putin(English/Russian with subtitles whichever way he prefers).
2) Thomas Sowell.
3) Ben Shapiro.
4) Andrew Yang.
5) Donald Trump.
6) John Stossel.
7) Ben Eater.
add to this list guys. You can add whoever you want. Let us get Lex to watch this. He does read the comments.

"Those who need leaders are not qualified to choose them" That's a bar
bzeee its also stupid
I would just make an addendum to that statement, i think it's salvageable: "Those who need leaders are not necessarily qualified to choose them."
I think that adds a bit of nuance
I think leadership is something that would naturally arise within anarchism, and to act like it’s a function of democracy and not human nature is wrong. Also to believe that our qualifications dictate our power of influence is a structure that naturally creates hierarchy and escapes from anarchism. I might be struggling here, literally NEVER encountered Michaels perspective before. !!
In order for it to be a "bar" it would have to have a corresponding line to form a couplet, typically a rhyme but as it sits, it's just a sentence.
@@urin1337 it's a thought provoking idea intended to cause the mind to consider an alternative view. That's definitely not stupid. Just because you disagree with it or are unwilling to consider it doesn't make it stupid.
This was one of the best podcasts to which I have ever listened. Some really profound ideas being expressed here. Thanks, Lex. You’re the man.
Michael's view on people and their opinions, as animals with emotions, is psychologically very useful. Given that one applies it to oneself first, to understand one's internal forces and how they want to react to external forces.
Wow, a Russian bot vs a Russian troll! This is gonna be good
Lex you are a beautiful person inside and out. Greetings from Belgium
@Fato DelaVeritas what hahah
@Fato DelaVeritas he is growing. Give him few years.
Malice is one of the most interesting public intellectuals/personalities of our time!
Is he?
Great interview. I hope the two of you do many more interviews and share them with the rest of us in the future as well.
I love how open and honest about yourself you are my friend
"nuanced conversation can only happen if we are patient with each other", that's how I got into your show, I think that sentiment is so important right now. You should definitely share your videos at Hive too. Your viewers would love it there and they'd come over if you did.
Wow 3:06 the candid nature of Lex is so endearing. I was just visciously attacked online by someone and it completely brought back being bullied in middle and early high school to the point of being suicidal. the ostracism and hatred was so intense I internalized it and became depressed for hours.

I think maybe Lex just doesn't understand that being "mean" to someone can be love if it is coming from the right place. "Tough love". If you are just nice to people all the time and give them validation for anything and everything you create spoiled brat monsters. Sometimes even taunting people can be healthy if it forces them to look at their selfish/bad behavior.
There’s a British expression- cruel to be kind. Nick Lowe wrote an excellent song with that as it’s title. Listening to it now-fun-it’s on TH-cam. Enjoy!
