When we removed all the ICE bits from our electric 928 project our weight came right down to 910 kg (from 1500). So I'm sure you can find a bit quite a bit more, Richard. Some other comments: - we decided to sacrifice the back seats, which are almost as useless as those in a 911. Nobody is ever going to ride there and certainly not if you're gunning for 200mph. That gave extra space for all the electronics I nicked from my donor EV, and also the 12V battery, fuse boxes, etc. - so we'll need to do a bit of trimming to enclose our rear luggage/EV motor area. We're no longer a 2+2, just a 2-seater. - we are only using 18 CALB cells in series, as opposed to your 32 in series/parallel. All ours are going in the front, but you will need to spread them front and rear to get weight balance right. Luckily you'll have plenty of space back there where the fuel tank, auto trans went. Unfortunately the tunnel is too narrow to accommodate CALB batteries, but I expect two battery boxes for you. Large one front, smaller rear. - unlike your project, we're not building a 200mph hypercar. We have a national limit of 110km/h and I just want a brisk daily driver. Consequently I expect your weight will be around 1700kg. Ours will hopefully be around 1350-1380kg, lighter than any petrol 928! Which is a surprise to many of the petrol-heads objecting to my project. - As someone who has owned 6 x 928S, and currently own 4, I would suggest you aim for a weight balance around 45 front/55 rear, not the original 50/50. You will find this leads to a better balanced vehicle. You don't want a car that is nose-heavy. - we retained the Porsche instrument binnacle, which is a classic and trademark feature of the 928. But I added a screen to the centre console. - most 928s came with a sunroof - the smallest and most useless sunroof ever. And heavy. They leak, they don't work well, barely wide enough to get your fist through, you can save some weight by ditching it and filling the panel. Even the roof panel behind the vinyl/leather panel above you head is made of galvanised steel. I don't know what Porsche were thinking when they went to such trouble to save weight with Aluminium panels and suspension arms, etc. Consider ditching the sunroof. You'll never use it. - how dare you describe that dash as acres of plastic. Fi on you, sir! Some were quality vinyl but many were the finest leather Porsche could offer in its day. Sadly the Australian sun takes a terrible toll on it and it's rare to find one that isn't cracked and warped. In the UK your dashes often look OK, but the body / undersides are ravaged by rust from your soggy salty roads. We rarely find chronic rust in 928s in Australia unless the cars were imported from the UK. As many were. - and you're right about the seats. From memory I think they're about 25kg each. So lightweight seats will save you a bit. A shame though - the 928 seats are more comfy than they look and fabulous for long trips. - Also, as we're using so many bits from our donor EV, we will have niceties like reversing camera, DAB audio, Eco/Normal/Sports modes, driver-selectable regen (KERS), and possibly some of the radar based systems if I can be bothered. Pretty amazing in a 40 year old Porsche. ECC viewers are of course invited to watch our progress with our Porsche 928 EV on the inCARnation Australia channel. EVs rule! 🏁 👍Hope this helps👍and all the best from the 928 EV8 in Sydney.
Thanks for the tips. We’re already quite far along with the other 928 so are going to copy the basic template we used on that one. We need a battery pack that is not only 80kWh but can maintain 1200amps for 10 seconds so we’re still looking at a couple of options on that.
First thing I thought when I saw those back seats was that nobody will ever use them so more room for batteries. It will be fun to compare your two projects. I get the sense that EV’s are going to take off in Australia with no domestic market to protect and so many choices.
All the childhood and in the '90 when I worked in Porsche, I never understood why the people like the small loud stressy 911. For me the 928 was „the one and only“
Always loved the 928, when I was 14 in 1982 I wrote to Porsche in Germany and asked for a brochure for the 928 and they sent me one, I remember how exciting that was at the time. Can't wait to see how this turns out!
Long ago when you converted a 944 (i have owned one as a daily driver) I was hoping you were going to convert a 928 S4 in the future. Thats because I always wanted to own and drive a 928 S4 but the V8 maintenance cost of ownership prohibited that purchase. So I am really looking forward watching you go crazy on your donated 928 S4. A dream come true for me. (Too bad that the steering wheel is on the wrong side ;)
Can't wait to see what you do to both the 928's. I had a boss that had one and every now and then I had to move it but unfortunately it was less than a mile each time. I've always preferred these to any other Porsche.
Fabulous! years ago drove a early automatic 928, had gorgeous Body style and build . Interior was an ergonomic nightmare. Drove and power like a base Camaro,
This is the one I have really been waiting for Richard, and with you being given Carte Blanche to do as you will with a foc donor car, the limits are boundless. I share your excitement in this project and look forward to its development. 👍🏴😎
Well, that's fortuitous! I bought a non-running 928 earlier this year with the intention of electrifying it as well. Hope to learn a thing or two by watching you take it on!
It’ll be 80% similar to the 944 conversion we did a while back. Except the 928 will have a large performance motor in the back and a battery pack with a higher C rating. 👍
Looks like a fun project. I remember a lot was made, at the time, of the 928 not having bumpers - The squishy body being the bumper with special paint(?) that didn't flake off when the body/bumper was 'dented' and then returned to its original form. I don't remember a lot of people talking about the 928's performance. I probably moved in the wrong circles.
Fantastic, I'm just skipping about with joy to see this project come to fruition. I will be keeping a very close eye on this , unmissable. 😁😁😁😁👍👍👍 . Cheers !!
As the proud owner of a S4 928, I am watching this and InCarnation with interest. That V8 makes such a great noise, but I can see why a 928 would make such a good EV - it was a digital car in an analogue age. You are correct, the electric seats are very heavy, so switching those out will save you quite some weight. The rear spoiler is also surprisingly heavy, but you can buy a GRP version that is far lighter. The battery is a big old lump and the spare, even as a spacesaver is not light - both those will no doubt be gone, so you've got 15kg there. Maybe a kilo in the amp as a modern head unit won't need it, then God knows how much internals thick cabling - Porsche used more copper than the Space Shuttle. ....
looking forward to seeing the updates on this build. Especially how you overcome the engineering challenges. Brilliant to give such an iconic car a new lease of life.
Looking forward to your new project. I adore the 928 since it was released in 1977 (!) it still looks modern and fast as it could be put back into production.. I know you will treat it with respect as always 👍 and i am excited to see what will happen to this one.🍀
Very exciting!! I remember the first time I saw one, which was at the Motor Show. From memory had one positioned vertical, which meant you could depress the rear bumper, which was something I’d never seen before. I’m really looking forward to seeing the results of your build!
9:00 Ha..! I've always thought the fact that the steering wheel adjustment on my VW ID3 was pretty cool because the whole binnacle moves with it, allowing a consistent view through the wheel. So VW got the idea from a sister company's original, from way back when.
Down under, we're 34 episodes into our Porsche 928 EV conversion. About a year ago I recognised the 928 was the perfect classic for conversion for many reasons that I'm sure many viewers will agree, Richard. Viewers are invited to follow the progress of our novel approach / budget build 928 EV8 (c). First episode is here ... th-cam.com/video/vbEqtlWsHFk/w-d-xo.html But good for you Richard, I'm sure you'll do it properly. Who will get their car registered and on the road first. Probably you but the race is on. Our donor car is a 1983 928S, but somebody at some stage fitted a S4 body kit. Our car won't be a rocketship as I'm transplanting everything from a MG ZS EV into it. Motor in the back, batteries front. The intention is a daily driver for suburban use - it's so rare to see the beautiful 928 shape on the roads today let alone on a daily basis. I intend to change that.
Funny how most people seems to love the 928. And I thought I was alone, I never imagined it was that popular. Anyway, if you can keep the weight close to standard and make it go 200 mph. I'll be very impressed and I can't wait to see if changing the ratio will work as intended. Good luck.
My grin has gotten very large after you started talking about removing the heavy steel panels. Might as well have fun with this project. I'm sure you can sell it afterwards for more than the money you put into it. I'd still like to see an Austin Healey 3000 Mark III conversion. It might be tough because that car was pretty small but it had a nice inline 6cyl with plenty of power.
I’m keen to see how this goes - and the other 928 project. I daily drove a 928GT for 14 years and owned it for another two before transferring it to its next custodian. Fantastic cars. What I’d really like to see is you do one with just slightly better performance than original but great range and AC. @IncCARnationAustralia is a mate and his 928 project is actually walking distance from my home. Stu is going down a different path to you but should end up with a nice EV. The alloy guards, bonnet and doors really cut a lot of weight in the 928 and it would be a shame to lose the really comfy, if heavy electric seats.
I remember you when you have mechanic show I’ve forgot the name of it but I used to watch it. He had a nice Volkswagen Carmen. I think it was or it was a beetle. You do good work. Keep it up.
You missed the opportunity to slide into the workshop with bob sever playing old time rock n roll just like in Risky business, as that is where I first remember seeing a Porsche 928. Maybe you can save it for the finale 😂
New lightweight alloy wheels could save some weight as well, I love the project, and it will probably be my second favorite just behind the VW camper van 🙂
Alright! We need some good 80's sound tracking to back this project series up! My vote would be The Police, Ghost in the Machine. If only licensing didn't stand in the way... maybe Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner might see fit to give you a break. Hmm, on second thought Scorpions, Love at First Sting might also be appropriate.
I rode in a 928 back in 1979 when i was 12. It was superfast but a bit of a boat. I think i preferred my brothers 924 which he would throw around a tight corner blazingly fast.
Giving ECC free range on a eighties Porche? Be afraid. Be very afraid. Just when you thought it was safe to go back on the roads of Wales. Looking forward to this series.
Have you seen the InCarNation electric MG-powered 928 being built in Australia? It’s a good series; the build is interesting and the videos are quite professional.
I’m a little skeptical that a single Tesla drive unit will have enough power to get to 200 mph but it should be a pretty killer car even if it comes up a little short.
@@ElectricClassicCars It gives it another option if you take the car outside of Wales, you will know a modern electric AC unit will weigh less, options are good 👍
Interestingly, this was my first encounter with the 928 S4, back in the days at a waterpark while I was in primary school. I spent hours on that game. Then I saw the first one in the flesh in 1989, age 12, and it left me speechless. It became my dream car. Fast forward to 2012, and I got the amazing chance to purchase one for not much on ebay. I have been a (mostly) happy owner until a couple of months ago when the engine and gearbox "went bang". I then had what seems to be the best idea in the world: let's ask Electric Classic Cars if they want it for a project! The story continues 😊
This is right on time for me! I purchased my ‘85 with the same intent. Ironically enough, when I started it up I almost changed my mind because of the quality of the engine note - although more brutal than boxster elegance… until I couldn’t even get a Porsche mechanic to even take my money to ascertain what it needed, much less fix it. Needless to say, THIS Porsche - more than any other - deserves an electric n*- sack. PS: I will buy the kit when you make it available so I can ballsup mine as well - Q1-25. 928E - baby
@ how long until you post your 928 kit? Also, since you’re across the pond, will you also consider selling the harness and things separately if I just source the battery and motor locally? I am a few months out from starting mine but I follow all of your videos and trust that I could not improve on your ideas (except software, if you guys ever want a partner on that experience since that is what’s left to really improve this space: a real aftermarket UI for controls and the like).
Please leave the Auto shifter in if possible! I don't think the little twisty knob or buttons for drive modes would do it justice, would love to see if the Auto Shifter can be adapted for different modes too (like L, 2, 3 and D) can all be different Regen or drive mode settings)
In the 80s I and a couple of mates would drool over 911s. We never even stopped to look at 928s - they were for old men (as we thought then). But I was wrong: I'm now an old man, but the 928 still does nothing for me. Soz. But fabulous project. Good luck!
Cool project. Maybe don't go too overboard on the sound deadening removal. Some of it will be just to quieten any road noise. I'd remove the rear seats though.
Thanks for the content, great content as always with the added bonus of reading all the boomer's in the comments section complaining....." It's got no soul"🙄🤣
What a superb project! Is there any scope for replacing the awful grey plastic with carbon fibre? It would definitely look better (in my opinion) but would it save weight? Is it even possible?
Richard, would you be prepared to show details of the motor mounting in the rear (obviously done without any modification of the actual shell)? Would you consider selling a mounting kit? I've been toying with the idea of converting a 928 for a while now and even mentioned it to you at the Farnborough show a few years ago. Also been chatting to Stu in Australia, but although it's great to watch his progress, massaging an MG drivetrain into the 928 is not the route I'd take, but a Tesla motor has always been a possibility. Getting the motor mounted would be the greatest challenge for me, but if some sort of mounting kit was available, it would make using a Tesla motor very attractive and then I can do the rest myself. Would you consider selling such a mounting 'kit'?

I love 928's, and I can not wait to see how this turns out!!
Have fun and "go absolutely nuts", Richard...!!
We're all looking forward to seeing just what becomes of this 928 supercar... 😎
Very cool project, can’t wait to see all of it.
Can't wait to see what you do to both the 928's. I had a boss that had one and every now and then I had to move it but unfortunately it was less than a mile each time. I've always preferred these to any other Porsche.

Me too! Any plans to document the project in some way? There’s very little info out there besides Stu of inCARnation’s excellent TH-cam series
Now that's what I was looking for!!! My dream car with unlimited performance! Can't wait to see it start.
928s are awesome cars and as I like EVs too I am very interested how these projects evolve! Good luck!🎉
Love how you improve these cars and the engine in that was hideously expensive to maintain- youll make it better and cheaper to maintain!
This unit looks to have some real possibilities. Hope to see more. Thanks. Jim Bell (Australia)
"What a cool project" - Yes! My thoughts exactly, I can't wait to see the result.😎
Always love your work and projects. Excited to see how it goes.
Looks like a fun project.

Maybe a kilo in the amp as a modern head unit won't need it, then God knows how much internals thick cabling - Porsche used more copper than the Space Shuttle. ....
The spoiler was broken so we’ve ordered a new grp one. I was also surprised how much that old one weighed. Where’s the amp? 👍
looking forward to seeing the updates on this build. Especially how you overcome the engineering challenges. Brilliant to give such an iconic car a new lease of life.
so looking forward to this conversion, this is the car I am interested in doing a conversion on!!

This will be awesome, beautiful cars! Glad they did not end the 911 but the 928 sure is an awesome machine!
This project is exciting, love the ideas, the wider fenders will drag down the topspeed as is the rearwing, but the looks will be nice.
As someone who sold their 928 GTS to get into a Tesla Model S85D I'm very interested in this project. Looks fascinating.

Great idea. 😆👍

Interesting project. Maybe ditch the back seats too, no one fits in those anyway...
New sub and liked, thanks YT for this pop up, should be a great build series
This will be interesting.
Brilliant! You must invite the original owner back to see the car when completed!
Definitely 👍
Great video, look forward to the next one 👍
More to come!
LOVE 928s!!!!!
Go Man GO👊
This is going to be cool
As a teen of the 60s, my fave Porsche will always be the 911. But this is deffo an interesting project!
New lightweight alloy wheels could save some weight as well, I love the project, and it will probably be my second favorite just behind the VW camper van 🙂
Love this project so much.
Awesome car and project! 😍😍😍
This is EXCITING!
Secondo me la Porsche più bella mai costruita. Ottima trasformazione
Alright! We need some good 80's sound tracking to back this project series up! My vote would be The Police, Ghost in the Machine. "Who's the U-boat commander?"
Great choice!
80 kwH that's more than enough👍
Really hate the boring wheels but the car has potential.
Awesome project ❤❤❤
I rode in a 928 back in 1979 when i was 12. It was superfast but a bit of a boat. I think i preferred my brothers 924 which he would throw around a tight corner blazingly fast.
I don't know but I'm guessing you could save weight with different wheels, even if they're bigger(?). Looking forward to seeing this!
Giving ECC free range on a eighties Porche? Be afraid. Be very afraid. Just when you thought it was safe to go back on the roads of Wales. Looking forward to this series.
Looking at that without all the ICE weight it looks like a dakar spec car. Make it 4WD!
Amazing!!!
Cool project! If I still lived in the UK, I'd be asking you to convert a Ford 1600E, my favourite car from back in the day.
That would be cool!
Cool Project 👌🏻🇬🇧🇩🇰🏁😎
Mate of mine had a 928 a few years ago. It was in excellent condition and def did 270 kmh. Poor car only lasted a few months before he destroyed it.
I would save the air con, it is soo worth it
I would look at replacing it with a modern unit. This probably ran off a belt from the now missing engine, and has probably seen better days, anyway.
I’ve never had AC in any of my classic cars. Just open a window. 🤷♂️ Maybe it’s because we live in Wales and don’t get enough sun. 😆😉👍
@@ElectricClassicCars It gives it another option if you take the car outside of Wales, you will know a modern electric AC unit will weigh less, options are good 👍
Oooh, same colour as my 79 manual!
Been thinking about an electric one. :)
Obviously my one is prettier ;-)
Ooh. Nice. Not many manuals around. 👌😎
I always loved the 928. But I'm more of a fan of quick cars, than top speed cars. But it will definitely be a challenge.
Challenge accepted
Nice.
Maybe put in some RECARO PODIUM CFs for seats ... and locate some lighther 18" rims.
Chase HQ.
LETS GO MR DRIVER!!

928E - baby
Excellent. Another electric 928 in the world. 😎⚡️👍
Good luck!
lovely car one of Clarkson's fav all time cars.
I hope to see 600bhp ev power in this min ❤❤
Oh, oh, free reign, 200 +.
Incarnation in Australia are doing the same with a 928 but using and MG BEV drivetrain for it!!!
Thanks for the plug!
Really ;looking forward to what you do to a no rules car
Have you done any hybrid electrics? With a motor and generator and smaller batteries, driving an electric axel?
Thanks Mikhail for being a donor. 👍💪✌
Another great project. It would be interesting to see how little paperwork there is in the UK to make a converted car like this road legal.
Wow! what a great project. could you put a 48v system in it, too? It might help reduce the weight.
Interesting idea. 🤔
This futuristic machine now gets the soul it deserves. 😄
lol.... bad joke
What ever happened to the Jensen Interceptor????
Episode coming soon 👍😀
It’s finished. Just need to find time to do an episode on it. 👍
The original seats were not electric, so you will easily find seats without the electrics. :)
True. I’ll do a weight comparison and see if it’s worthwhile losing the luxury of electric seats. 👍
Just wondering .... what the budget is for this conversion !! ? thanks
Cool project. Maybe don't go too overboard on the sound deadening removal. Some of it will be just to quieten any road noise. I'd remove the rear seats though.
We’ve removed the sound deadening in the engine bay but left it all in the cabin. 👍
Thanks for the content, great content as always with the added bonus of reading all the boomer's in the comments section complaining....." It's got no soul"🙄🤣
Of course it doesn't! Its a stealthy silent soul snatcher, all it eats are ice cars souls mostly being driven by sad insecure male boomers!
Thanks 😀
What a superb project! Is there any scope for replacing the awful grey plastic with carbon fibre? It would definitely look better (in my opinion) but would it save weight? Is it even possible?
Interesting idea 🤔👍
Call me on the workshop number in the week. 👍
