    your build looks good so far, but you won`t be happy with your Roofinsulation. You should put a Vapor-barrier between your insulation and the inside cladding.

    • @buildaway
      @buildaway  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Should have used the vapor barrier indeed. We're misinformed by the hardware store and in a bit of a rush. We hope it will be ok because the small house will be used as a summer house for friends and family. We will do this differently in the big house.

  • @olalindberg833

    I must agree with some of the other comments. You really should have a ventilation gap between the roof and the insulation, and then a vapor barrier under the insulation. There’s a good chance you’ll experience moisture damage in the roof with your construction. I really hope you’ll pick up some knowledge about these things before you start working on the big house.
    Another thing: consider using ecological insulation and a breathable vapor barrier in old wooden houses. Using modern insulation as glass wool requires to put in a plastic vapor barrier, but these old houses are meant to be able to breathe …

    That ceiling has never been insulated before so it is not "reinsulation", insulation was only ever done between the attic floor and the ceiling of the downstairs. As other people has commented, the ceiling insulation you did now is not a good idea as there are layers missing, this will cause condense water on top of the ceiling boards and will most likely cause mold longterm if not fixed in the future. And you will have a lot of mice living in it. But maybe that was a short cut you chose for a temporary solution to save time.
    Please read also the "negative" comments before you start on the big house so not to make same mistakes twice. Or answer why you think your way is a better one. There is a good number of educated comments and you should really take advantage of them 🙂
    Anyway I really like watching your videos, you have a really nice an calming voice and the setting is beautiful.

    The room looks great. All that insulation in the floors and walls and ceiling are going to make a huge difference in the winter. The cost for drilling and adding plumbing to the "cottage" is going to be worth the cost - definitely - in the winter.

    You have way to little insulation under the floor planks which you probably already know by now cause this winter 2023 to 2024 turned out to be the coldest in years. As others already said you cannot insulate the roof like you did it will cause you (or others if you sell the property) health problems in the future but besides that you will have to redo it.

    Warm inside air carry more water vapor. It will travel up through the ceiling boards and into the insulation. There the cold outside air will cause condensation of the moist air inside the insulation and on the roof structure. Every board under the tin roof will be blackened by mold growing in a few years. Study building codes before you do anything to the big house, please. Wind barriers, vapor barriers and gaps for ventilation are not there for no reason in a new house.

    • @buildaway
      @buildaway  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Should have used the vapor barrier indeed. We're misinformed by the hardware store and in a bit of a rush. We hope it will be ok because the small house will be used as a summer house for friends and family. We will do this differently in the big house. Gaps for ventilation are present though maybe not clearly visible in the video.

    • @tortap
      @tortap 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@buildaway this is a very common mistake in renovations. Old houses had soft boards and wood, with wood fibre insulation or saw dust as insulation. This acts as a buffer, absorbing and drying with temperature and proper ventilation. A roof with improper vapor barriers and glass fibre insulation will create mold on the rafters. It can sometimes be seen from one section of a house to the next renovated one, under the same roof. So there are ways to build without plastic but then you really need to read up on the subject.

    My best friend and her husband built an off the grid 3 story cabin . Are you getting solar panels ? They had back up huge battery packs and 3rd back up gas generator . This because New Hampshire is very cloudy and solar was not 100% reliable for power . Heat source was only 2 wood stove though. They had huge one in basement to heat all 1st floor areas and one very large for living rm/ loung area . They live in upper New Hampshire close to Canadian border, so ver very cold. And in that climate you need back up to solar. There are certain kitchen appliances lile refrigerator for anything on solar ( Im not sure if that is just a US requirement?) The only line they were connected to from town was water/plumbing She does have compostimg toilet for guest house though. As far as windows 🪟, her spouse wanted 2 windows only , as for they suck the heat right out of your home . So no large wrap around windows in their cabin . Theyve taken turns every few hours to pack the stoves with wood 🪵 during the night . It has been 25yrs later they are exhausted for living off grid . And moved closer to town hooked up to all main water , gas , electricity but still out in white mountains of new Hampshire ❤😊.

      Nice to read your story. We will get solar panels. The only line we are connected to is electricity so next to fireplaces and solar panels we have this as an option as well.

    Mhmmm… you don’t store firewood in your living room.
    If the wood gets warmed up all the little crawler will come out.
    Fire wood can be stored outside, just cover it with a metal sheets or use the barn as firewood storage.
    It’s a tiny house, it would be a real waste of room.
