      You cannot advance with old thinking. However for me personally he is still a gem's, but the type that can't shine anymore.
      Im thinking thier teh tarik is instant probably, unless they have someone skilled that can make it and "tarik" it closeby, which unlikely unless they are in Malaysia.

    Tq for featuring Malaysian food. ❤
    1. Nasi Lemak is considered as national cuisine. The rice is cooked with coconut milk, a bit of salt and various other ingredients like pandan leaves, or/and lemongrass, ginger, fenugreek, bay leaves (daun salam/serai kayu). Often served with sambal, crispy anchovies and peanuts, boiled egg and few slices of cucumber. They usually wrapped with banana leaves. This is the basic nasi lemak, (the healthy and complete one plate meal) but nowaday people always take nasi lemak with all the extra side dish like fried chicken, chicken rendang. So I understand when they were surprised that nasi lemak used to be eaten daily by farmers. The one that they eaten is the one that is popular in Malaysia today, not the one that dubbed as the complete one plate meal that I learned in school.
    2. Wow, one man really spot the meaning. Jala is what we called the fish net here. 😂.. Roti Jala often accompanied with chicken/beef curry or chicken kuzi, a sweet stew in Kelantan. I think kuzi is influenced by Middle East stew. The kuzi powder (mixed spice powder) can be bought easily in Kelantan.
    3. Teh Tarik is also well known drink in Malaysia. The trademark is the foamy sweet milk tea. This drink is also dubbed as the culprit that contribute Malaysia as the one of the countries in South East Asia that has highest number of diebetic patients. So please drink moderately😅..

      During the 70s and 80s, sambal ikan bilis (anchovies sambal) is the actual sambal unlike now. Nowadays people use sambal paste either they grind the anchovies in or just use onions and serve anchovies separately, commonly practiced by the seller to avoid sambal getting rotten easily. The cucumber also replacing older version of ulam which is kangkung celur. And yes, peanuts and full boiled egg.. At least this is how Nasi lemas was served in 70s and 80s.

    oh this is so interesting! I've been following Reactistan for years but it never occurred to me they'd try food I was familiar with, since my country (Singapore) is so small! Singapore and Malaysia used to be 1 country and we share a lot of dishes (I literally just had teh tarik and nasi lemak for breakfast today - these are very common dishes here) so this was interesting for me to watch :)

    • @TheHothotheatlive
      @TheHothotheatlive ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@muhammada2445 I knew some childish person would start in the comments 😂that's why I said we used to be 1 country - to emphasise that it's impossible and pointless to try to pinpoint origin. Malaysia is wayyy bigger, so there's a high chance dishes originated from Malaysia, especially Malay dishes like nasi lemak.
      On the other hand, most of Malaysia was rural and Malay (apart from the West Coast states where races also mingled), while Singapore was the main port of entry/immigration with the highest concentration of Indian, Chinese, Malay and European mingling. So there's an equal chance that dishes with clear multiracial influences (many of which involve pork lard) like chicken rice, fish head curry, hokkien mee, katong laksa, Peranakan dishes, etc were invented in the port city of Malaya (Singapore).
      I used to live in the UK and I find when we're overseas, Malaysians and Singaporeans tend to just embrace our common identity - we have the same accent, same food, same traditions, same ancestors, and many have grandparents or relatives across the border... Thanks to the historically porous border between both nations, the great great grandchildren of the same guy who invented laksa in Katong (in Singapore) could be Malaysian in 2023, and the great great grandchildren of the same person who invented nasi lemak in Malaysia could be Singaporean now. No point fighting an imaginary war lol.

      @@TheHothotheatlive You NEED to try roti jala (aka roti kirai). Malays usually eat it when we break fast so you could try joining one of your Malay friends next Ramadan. Or I'm sure you can find it in Kampong Glam or something.

    • @aldenteh9412
      @aldenteh9412 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Fun fact: Nasi Lemak originated in the west coast of the Malay peninsula, mainly from the Malacca Sultanate around the 14th century. This is because the side dishes are common only on the west coast of the Malay peninsula. The dish is later introduced to Singapore by Malay migrants around the 17th century.
      There is a dish similar to Nasi Lemak, which is the Nasi Uduk from Indonesia. Both dishes look similar but actually only the method of cooking the rice is similar, the side dishes and preparations are completely different. Nasi Uduk does not have the strong taste of Coconut milk, but Nasi Lemak has a strong taste instead.
      3 countries serve similar dishes, Indonesia's Nasi Uduk has no relations to Nasi Lemak and consists of chicken meat and green samba with shredded eggl; Malaysia's Nasi Lemak has a strong coconut milk taste and is accompanied by dried anchovies and Red Sambal with hard boiled egg; Singapore's Nasi Lemak consists of the same rice as Malaysia but the side dishes are usually processed food.
      We enjoy similar food and we feel no difference together. We should maintain a close relationship to one another.

      @@aldenteh9412 interesting, thanks (: in SG nasi lemak is usually served with ikan bilis, egg and sambal, cucumber, peanuts, fried chicken or fried kuning fish, and sometimes otah. Sometimes you can get it with luncheon meat, sotong (squid), etc but that's not very standard
