My first open mic was honestly great - I had a few beers, went up first, and acted like I had been doing it forever. When I was done, one dude put $10 in my hand and said "Great job, buy yourself another drink." I've had plenty of train wreck nights since then though

I used to play this bar in my tiny home town every week. When I started I sucked so bad, after a couple of months of playing live I became a better entertainer, singer, song writer and guitarist. I became a respected and even locally popular act. I also made a lot of friends and even met a few ladies. My advice, go play an open mic, a lot, even if you suck.

I‘ve been on stage to play for worship services, I‘ve been on stage to perform in the theater, but NOTHING holds a special place in my heart like my first open mic while I was in Williamsburg, Virginia and after a few spirits, and playing the guitar I brought to the conference and jamming in the hotel bar, someone pipes up and says, „Hey, Mark! The bar down the road has an open mic tonight, grab your guitar and let‘s go!“ And before I knew it, I was swept up into an Uber, pulled into the bar, someone put my name on the signup sheet and handed me another drink! After a few minutes, they called me up there, and realized I brought my Yamaha acoustic, NOT my electric! So, just like you, Tony, I had to borrow the house band‘s guitar. I didn’t‘t mind........it was a Thompson! So, there I am with a bass player, a drum kit, and a rhythm electric guitar player asking me, „So, what are we playing?“ Luckily, I‘d already memorized, „Margaritaville,“ so like a nervous pro I yelled out in this loud college-town bar, „MARGARITAVILLE IN D“ counted out a 4 count, then sprang into action. Thank goodness I learned that one a long time ago! Everyone joined in for the verbal riffs in the chorus „SALT! SALT! SALT! SALT!“ It went over so well that they asked me to do another one, so one of my favorite songwriters and singers, Chris Stapleton, had just released, „Broken Halos,“ and I told the house band to come in on the second verse and they, of course, nailed it. Oh, and no, it did NOT go perfectly. I forgot some of the words to the 3rd verses along with some of the vocal modifications that Chris does, but we soldiered on! The place was packed and the clapping and hollering was addicting when I finished! It was a young crowd so when this ‚ole timer got off the stage they started a rapping sequence and the place was on fired. So, I packed up my Yamaha that wasn‘t used, grabbed an Uber back to the hotel, and relished in the moment. My advice to my fellow guitar geeks; SEIZE THE DAY! LIVE A LIFE FILLED WITH JOURNEYS, NOT REGRETS! #guitargeeksunite

I like the list Tony, I’d add- if you’re new to the open mic circuit attend a few before you play. Get to know the people there and the process of getting on the list to perform and how many songs you’d like to do.

A lesson I took from your first open mic experience is "Just do it!" A bunch of things went wrong and you still got through it, & it was a great experience. Most people would have used any of those momentary setbacks as an excuse to not go through with the performance. You pushed through & look at all it has led to. Thanks for doing what you do. Love the show.

When i went to my first open mic, it honestly wasnt that bad for me. But i was kind of in the background playing lead for the band i was in at the time. When i played solo at that same open mic, i was shaking like a leaf, to the point where i had a hard time playing basic chords, but, i managed to get through it with only a few fumbles. Ive been playing at the open mic every Wednsday at That Damn Mary (shout out for my favorite brewery in my area) for over a year now and have made some great friendships with the regulars and the brewers there, so much so that i consider them part of my musical family. As for helping to prepare, i would tell everyone to print out the lyrics to the song their playing. Many times ive practiced and rehearsed the songs im playing, only to forget the lyrics the second i get behind the mic. Anyway, great show as always Tony, see you all next Tuesday.

Great show Tony. I laughed out loud at your first open mic story. I have no memory of playing at a live open mic although I look forward to trying it out when things open up. Been really enjoying both playing and listening to the virtual open mics on TAC. I can't recommend these enough for anyone who is trying to overcome "performance anxiety". They are the most support forum for sharing your music on the planet! Not to mention I have heard performances now from 4 continents! I do have about a decade of frequent gigging in my early music history. I totally agree with the strength in numbers idea. Being part of a group - even if just a duo or trio - took so much of the pressure off that I had a lot of fun.

Thanks for your story on your first open mic gig. It's realy encouraging to hear you being so humble about it. I am a worship leader in a local church in a small town called Secunda in South Africa and I often think back on the first time i got on stage doing a live show...I realise that one gets better with time, but its something i constantly work at. For me talent in singing and playing the acoustic guitar don't come naturally. Thanks for a great channel.

Fantastic episode and great advice! I think there are 2 very important things everyone needs to be a performer: 1) the ability to laugh at yourself and 2) have fun at what you are doing!
I've never done an open mike, but I was asked to lead a Folk Mass when I was about 12 (1968) - pretty nervous. I did know all the chords (just strumming) - but I had not practiced singing (or at least singing loud enough lead a group of kids)! But like you, I had the support of friends and I ended up having a lot of fun!
Yeah, E-E-E-E-b-e: definitely a Stephen Stills tuning!

I believe I hold the world's record (for better or worse) for open mike performances at 2600 in person and 400 online. The trick of the first performance is that if you get through it without throwing up ONSTAGE you've done well! If you throw up later offstage that's a problem. The first time is really about getting past the emotion of doing something that is somewhat unnatural, IE in nature you don't normally have one animal the center of attention like this, and our biology rebels against doing it.
After you've done it 1000 times it's a piece of cake.
Thank you for your video it's one of the best overviews I've seen on this subject.

My open mic night never happened because I was too nervous play. I was 24 and my guitar teacher at the time wanted me to play a classical tune in front of other students , parents etc. I never went back for practice and pretty much haven’t picked up the guitar until I got Covid in January of 2021. I decided then to pick it up again and have been practicing since at the age of 55! I just received an orangewood sage mahogany today .I didn’t want to put it down but unfortunately I have to go to work . Thanks for your tutorials it gives me inspiration to keep playing. My goal is to play gigs when I retire.

  • @MrMikeX

My first time was a nightmare. Hadn't planned it but got pushed onto stage by friends. No one (12 patrons) was really paying attention except for my 3 friends and my son. I tried playing an original but was so terrified that I couldn't even remember my own lyrics!. I eventually played and sang an acoustic version of Plush by STP, which turned out "ok", but not really.
I've gone several times since but prepared before hand and had a much better experience each time.
If you're thinking of jumping up there, please just do it! You will be nervous, but it's a normal part of it. And that does subside. You’ll be glad you did it, and it's definitely worth it. Good luck!

My first Open Mic was in 1983 at a place called Folkville World Faire in Austin, TX. It was a small bar converted from a convenience store, but had a stage & a mic with PA. I had a lot of family there, & although nerve wracking, I had a good time & even played an original I had written with the coercing of friends. I wish I had the skills I have now (& am honing in TAC) back then, but I was proud to make it through. I played a set of 6 songs.

My first? Had a few beers for a bit of dutch courage, the in house guitar had a different neck width and profile to what I was accustomed to and due to nerves I forgot my own song half way through (I had practiced honest!)
Lastly, my leg started visibly shaking and it took great efforts to keep it tapping in time.
Even though it couldn't have gotten worse, after I finished and made a beeline to the bar, I had a massive endorphin rush.
I have only done a few open mics and that was a while ago. Time to get back on the saddle methinks.

My first open mic went, in a sense, too well. I was prepared with some songs, I closed my eyes to get in my own little world and played. The audience reaction was polite, maybe even a bit enthusiastic. When I finished, the host looked at me intently and told me to play one more. Luckily I had one in reserve. On the way past the bar to my table some woman remarked that that was awesome. Someone came over to the table to enquire about my guitar and someone else remarked that I sounded like Don Henley. On leaving this brewery I felt apprehensive about coming back next week because it might not feel anywhere near as encouraging and, sure enough, it wasn’t. In fact it’s never been like that again but it was a good way to start out.

You had me crying with laughter at the "...so I'm enebriated, my guitar doesn't work, I've borrowed somebody elses guitar, and their tuner, and..." Sir, my very first open mike experience was a Gong Show (yeah, it was that long ago!) game night at a bar in the Chicago burbs area, I was first up, I borrowed a guitar, attempted Harry Chapin's "Mr. Tanner", and promptly got "Gonged". Think about that...you are doing Harry Chapin's "Mr. Tanner" and you get gonged! Talk about irony...
    Anyway, great episode, thanks!

Before you begin, take a deep breath, count to ten, or whatever trick you have to take a moment to relax. Before doing open mic I had done karaoke but I had never accompanied myself solo on guitar. I was comfortable getting on stage, but I was so excited that I started the tune way too fast and ended up rushing through it. I needed to take a moment to just chill and think of the tempo of the tune.

Hey Tony, you alluded to one. Go to the open mic place once just to listen first. That's when you find out how nice the organizers are, and connect with the others who are going up to play. You find out that that you are not going to play after a Molly Tuttle type, but people more like you, some a a little better, some maybe not as good. I recorded the rehearsed songs and listened to them before hand. I also did as you suggested, and played the 2 songs with a friend. I did screw up though. Out of nerves, I guess, I forgot to take the capo off from the 1st song, and noticed something terribly wrong going into the 2nd song. We stopped, I took off the capo, and we went on. I'll confess I had a pint of Guinness and some fish and chips to support the hosting bar beforehand, and was none the worse for it.

I would recommend practicing at home with a mic, even if it's not plugged in, to get used to singing directly into a mic. If you're used to playing and singing on the couch, looking at your fretboard, and do that live, the people won't hear you.

I played my very first open mic in 1973 when I was 16 years old. It was at the Lions Den in Stockbridge, MA. The Lions Den is a little Pub attached to the Red Lion Inn. That weekend, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Alan Ginsberg's Rolling Thunder Tour was performing at Tanglewood in nearby Lenox, MA, and they were staying at the Inn. I signed up on the chalk board and waited anxiously for them to call my name. (Did I mention I had smoked a joint beforehand, hoping to calm my nerves?) The performer listed on the board ahead of me finished his last tune and it was now my turn. As I picked up my guitar and headed for the stage, who walks into the pub but Joan Baez. Immediately recognizing her, the MC of course asks her to play a song or two. Joan gladly agrees and proceeds to perform 3 or 4 songs. She finishes to thunderous applause and then the MC calls me up. If I wasn't a nervous wreck before, I was a total mess now. (I know the only way I'm following Joan Baez is out the door . . .) So, I start to play my first song; After The Gold-rush by Neil Young. There is a young girl sitting at the table nearest to the stage, and she is trashed. She starts to sing along with me. When she repeats the second verse I follow right along with her. When she abruptly stops, dazed and confused, so do I. Needless to say, it was a nightmare. When I left that pub you could have bought my 72 Guild D-40 for about $12. I really thought my days of playing guitar were OVER.

Yes, some aspects are familiar! Tune up guitar before (tuning can change in a different, warmer more humid room). Yes, have fun...smile, look at the audience, take humour, like public speaking don't rush. Choose songs with not many lyrics to remember first...less to forget, or songs you can ad lib alot. Things we wish we had known, but you have to live and learn.

Had my first open mic last night. Train wreck. A friend of mine puts on an acoustic showcase once a month at a Roadhouse in Drake, Colorado. He owns a music store and invites friends up to play there. Somebody backed out and he called me to ask if I had enough songs to do 30 minutes? Well, I did. I had played these songs flawlessly for my wife, dog and two cats. Facing live bullets was soooooo different. I followed a guy who got thru his set but wasnt great. I was relieved not to be following somebody who was really good. All the players there had played in front of audience's before. I took the stage and began with an easy campfire strummer "Some Beach" by Blake Shelton. Got thru it at about 150 beats per minute. The chord changes were coming so fast Billy Strings would have been struggling to keep up! Then I did a couple of Waylon songs and for some reason thought I had to try and sing like Waylon. I dont. Not even for a second. Not even for a nano second. I pushed thru the bad Waylon Tribute and realized I wanted to exit the stage. I still had 20 minutes. Forgot some chord changes and words to several songs. It was jawdropping to me that songs I played pretty good at home I bumbled thru in front of people. The crowd was very kind. I actually was having fun with the crowd between songs and shared with them that this was my first time. I will do this again. It motivated me to come back and play and sing the way I know I can. Thankfully none of the video my wife took was good. She was off to the side of the stage and the PA was in front of her. I did not want to be reminded of what I subjected those people to! Just do it. And do it again. The experience was humbling and a motivator for me. Good luck!

    1. Assume that somebody in the bar is going to be rude and talk/shout while you are performing.
    2. Yes - BE PREPARED
    3. Understand that the longer you have to wait the more drunk some folks in the audience are going to be and they may get rude/in your face - shouting "play Free Bird!" or some other stupid stuff. Be prepared with something witty (NOT nasty to say).
    4. Have fun because chances are pretty good only one or two people may actually really listen to you. Most of the others are either too drunk, use it as a way to pick people up or like being rude (see #1).

How did I end up at open mikes? A friend wanted to try it and new I played guitar and sang so she asked if I would come with her. ANd then she never showed up at the place.
I could write more about my performance but don't want to discourage anyone.

Perform, perform, perform. Practice & prepare, practice & prepare, practice & prepare. 25 years playing almost weekly and I still have some nerves and yes, almost anything you can conceive (and more) WILL happen. You just roll with it; most of the time the audience is wanting you to succeed and rarely even notices the mistakes, so don't draw attention to them. Oh, and practice & prepare. :)

Open mic: they asked me to come up, sing & play. So I didn't have time to get nervous and they asked me to sing what they wanted to hear. So I did it as if I was singing to family or Church and it went well. Well they asked me back.

So it wasn’t really an open mic but I had a buddy who made the realization that he couldn’t sing and play at the same time so he asked me to join the band and learn 3 originals and 3 covers for their gig
Then on the first practice I was at he said I had two weeks.
Fast forward to the “gig” it was at a small church in the sticks in Indiana. There were 16 or 17 people there. All members of the congregation and 2 of which were someone’s grandmothers. Oh boy. Our covers were 2 Black Sabbath songs and an AIC song. The originals were post grunge and not very well written. I have night terrors about that performance lol

@AcousticLife 20:19 Hey Tony so in regards to your statement about "remember they used to have Blockbuster?" Well there still is one left. Thats right right there is one left Blockbuster that is alive. I'm not promoting for anyone or anything just so you know. But there is a new documentary on Netflix about it. It's called The Last Blockbuster. Check it out it's a good one bud. Just a little info.. :)

You should do one on an open mic, audition, or a solo gig where you did have all you sh*+ together and tell us how that went!
I have had a few bad nights myself, the worst always seem to be when either myself or circumstances put high expectations on your performance... psyching yourself out is just a disaster waiting to happen!

My first open mic was a total disaster, got up on stage, opened up my lyrics started strumming the intro, and singing the first verse of the new song I wrote, and realized I had forgotten to put my glasses on and couldn't read the lyrics without them, After the first verse I had to stop playing and go get my glasses from my wife in the audience- it sure sucks getting old and going blind, the audience sure got a good laugh though..

So I was up with a girl, because I don't sing well, and I hear the oddest tone ringing out beside me. I look over and she's capo'd the 2nd fret not realizing that she's now not in G. Luckily there was someone's capo laying there and I grabbed it quickly.

This bar I used to play at years ago was my first open mic experience, and it was mixed. I got better, but I had to stop halfway through the song on more than one occasion because I forgot the lyrics. Yeah, the host of the open mic was not my biggest fan. Make sure you really like the songs, I think I didn't actually like one of those songs where I forgot the lyrics.

A buddy and I had been playing together for a few months and figured let's try an open mic. We picked the song el Paso. So we got there and our names are called and we get all set, tune up and where about to play and I say "any grateful dead fans".....one guy yells "yeah!". We play and that one guy was so happy and no one else payed attention lol

Been playing for 30 years, including for festivals, churches, libraries (and all paid), but had never played an open mic.
So I thought “I got this. I’ll be the star! Heck, people pay me to play,”
First song went well … or at least okay. Then it just kind of fell apart. I capoed wrong. I played in the wrong key. Then I capoed wrong AND played in the wrong key …
What happened? We’l to begin with, I somehow decided to re-invent myself instead playing my usual style. Looking back it, I think I could have held the audience the whole night if I’d just played my usual stuff.
Right before I went on, some 20 something drunk chic started hitting on me. I was 52, happily married (still am!) and had zero interest. Plus .. the guy right before sang some really offensive (to me) song about sex with animals. No I’m not making it up …
So … I was a little rattled to start with on top of making poor song choices. Plus I was a little full of myself.
Sometimes, you just have to hit that chord with open strings in first position, let it resonate against your chest and then remember why you wanted to play guitar in the first place.
Was glad to sit back down. Then the drunk chic came back over and sat down.
    First and last open mic.
But after your video, I think I’ll try it again. But either my wife or one of my daughters is going with me!
    Drunk chic insurance.

@@ellie698 Never too late to start though :) Back when I was doing a weekly commute to London, I'd go to an open mic every night. Had some magical nights across the city, including one fabulous night at the Green Note where the organiser forgot to turn up, so we started a list and ran an entirely acoustic night because none of us were confident to man the mixing desk. Just a marvellous night.

It was the worst day in my life. i practiced for two weeks. i thought i was ready. My mom said I sounded great. In the middle of the song blackbird this guy yells out cheeseburgers in paradise. So I want to get back to all the people laughing so I started singing 100 bottles of beer on the wall. To my surprise there all started singing then stomping there feet and some dancing around like ballerinas. The song ended when one of the girls was swung around and took both my legs out and down i went to the floor guitar and all. Ill never do it again

Worst experience: a guy stood up in front of the mic for the whole show! Asked him for some space and he never moved! Nobody from the pub organizers asked him to move! I think the crowed enjoyed the performance, but that guy ruined the whole show for me!
Also, have a second guitar ready or a set of strings!
Have 2 tuners (pedal and clip)!Sometimes electric plugs fail! And sometimes the crowd is too loud or the bar has music in the background!
If you use loopers or drum machines be ready to play without them! They will fail eventually!
Learn how to work with a mixing table! New bar owners sometimes don't know their own gear!
Label your gear - your case, cables, stands, pedals, tuners, etc! Sometimes they get mixed up!
Interact with the audience! At least look at them! I've seen so many guitar players arrive, eyes on the guitar, played 2 or 3 songs and never took the eyes of the guitar!
