The interview given by prof. Haile Lerebo was very interesting. Speically the idea of how different tribes intermingled and mixed across the country in different Language groups. He was mentioning how Arsi, Bale, Harrar, Wellega, Shewa, Guji Oromos differ from each other and how they assimilated other language speakers to become Oromiffa speaker. At the same time how Gojjam differs from Gonder, shewa, Wollo. It would be great if you can present it in Oromo language please.

    Professor Haile Larebo’s inconsistency
It is very good that Professor Haile becomes Ethiopianist, but he should also explain his writings in 1980s and his PhD dissertations about the Ethiopian history.
Professor Haile Larebo wrote in 1988 that: “With the constitutions of 1931 and 1955 the state attempted to ensure that power, which was the essential prerequisite for success in this process, remained preserved in the hands of Christian Amhara and the Solomonic dynasty.”
Professor Haile Larebo wrote many articles in the 1980s which can be considered anti-Amhara and anti-Ethiopia, his name was Haile Mariam Larebo but after 1991 (sine TPLF’s rule in Ethiopia) he uses only Haile M. Larebo or Haile Larebo. Now he wants to create division and hostility between Oromos and Amharas. It is not only TPLF, but there are also many individuals that are working to create hostility between Amharas and Oromos.
Some scholars from the south could fear that Amhara and Oromo cooperation could mean Amhara and Oromo domination of other ethnic groups in Ethiopia. This is a legitimate and genuine fear, but doing intrigue to sabotage Amhara and Oromo cooperation is deceptive and unscholarly. Let me show Professor Haile’s inconsistency.
In his 1980s article titled The Ethiopian Orthodox Church and Politics in the Twentieth Century: Part 1 (Northeast African Studies Vol. 9, No. 3 (1987), Haile wrote that Ethiopian Orthodox Church as an instrument of Abyssinians expansion and a political tool to impose their culture and identity on other groups (Page2-4). He argues that Debteras training books were translated from Coptic and Arabic literatures (Page3) [ = means not purely religious books.] He writes …the monasteries played a role in the expansion and consolidation of the Abyssinian empire (Page3).
He even went to the extent to call them colonialists …”What was unique to these institutions from the beginning was that their leaders were explorers and colonialists at the same time” (Page3). He continues : “Christian soldier and colonists were stationed in the conquered territories as part of the program of evangelization” (Page4). … He argues the program aimed at spreading Christians rather than Christianity… (Page4)
    The Abyssinian nation (Page5)
He also criticized the Kebre Nagast ..”the claim of divine election of the Ethiopian nations to pursue a mission assigned to it by God amounts to defication of nationality. …the legacy of the church’s teaching contained in the Kebra Nagast is the inevitable ethnicization of its orthodoxy and reduction of its ecumenism into a parochial nationalism that often borders on chauvinism, (Page6).
On Ethioianess Page6: “The corollary of this is that any group confessing an alien creed cannot be Ethiopian nor can any Ethiopian adhere to any other creed, since the cardinal criterion of “Ethiopianess” is an acceptance of Christianity. Thus, in popular usage, the terms “Ethiopian” and “Christianity” became synonymous and are, indeed, interchangeable” (Page6).
On the Church Page6.: the church to serve the ends of national politics, interpreting its pathetic jingoism as an evangelical enterprise. Page6
Southward expansion of the Ethiopian Kingdom Page6: “In the light of this, church documents have invariably depicted the wars of national conquest and the continuing southward expansion of the Ethiopian Kingdom as a struggle between good and evil, light and darkness, attributing victories to the might of God, while describing the enemy as being guided by Satan”. Page6.
….assimilation of the vanquished people was promoted. Page6
Page9: “At the beginning of the twentieth century the situation was compounded following the internally induced process of southward expansion, carried out in the classic style of military conquest, that doubled the domains of the Solomonic realm and radically altered its social composition” Page9
In his 1980s article titled The Ethiopian Orthodox Church and Politics in the Twentieth Century: Part 2 (Northeast African Studies Vol. 9, No. 3 (1987), (Northeast African Studies Vol. 10, No. 3 (1987). Haile Wrote the followings:
Church and State after 1955 “Church and state were merged under a governing power with undivided and supreme authority, and they continued to reinforce each other at all levels within the single entity which stood as a symbol of Ethiopian nationalism. The church’s central organization was structured parallel to the political hierarchy of the state” Page6
Haile Wrote: “The diocesan and subdiocesan organizations were duplicates of the state administration” Page6
Haile Wrote: “For each governor-general in the fourteen provinces there was a bishop, and for each administrator in the 102 subprovinces there was one liqa kahnat. There was hardly a state institution or department, whatever its size of importance, in which the church was not represented, and equally there was hardly an ecclesiastical establishments in which government did not make its interest present through its officials”. Page6
Page 6: “Christain laws were imposed as state laws, and most state holidays were church holidays.” “Under the cover of moral education, churchmen taught Orthodoxy in all state schools”.
Haile Wrote (page 6): “With the constitutions of 1931 and 1955 the state attempted to ensure that power, which was the essential prerequisite for success in this process, remained preserved in the hands of Christian Amhara and the Solomonic dynasty.”
