If you put in an LED bulb, it will stay on all the time because LEDs require such a tiny amount of current. Whirlpools dimmer switch design will always let a tiny current through even when it says off. Put the original style incandescent bulb in it and it will likely then shut off. This was my problem.

Thank you for your video. It was very helpful. Have a Whirlpool model WMH31017HZ-0, 10/17. Changed the above range bulb WITHOUT unplugging it. Heard a large pop. Fried the light socket and that part of the control panel. Had to replace the light socket and the electric control panel. Repair vs replacement costs were close. Customer service at Whirlpool was not helpful. This video was what was helpful! Thank you. Side note: If you replace the electric control board, the black mechanism that the green ribbon goes in is “tricky”. The black piece does elevate about an eighth of an inch when you pull those tiny black tabs up. When you carefully put the ribbon into the slot, you have to push down gently on the black mechanism to lock the ribbon connection.

Thanks for this video. I was able to follow it exactly and perform the replacement without major difficulty. I was surprised at the trickiness of getting off some of the connectors, especially the two individual wires (black and red). And just in case someone else didn't take enough pics while disassembling--the black wire goes toward the back.

The Triac P/N BT136-600D on my control board P/N W10800189 was shorted between terminals T1 and T2. There are two triacs on the board. The culprit is 7919 (marked on board). Amazon sells them cheap. Replaced it and all is well. Saved some money. 😁

  • @DeanoKelley

Thanks for the video. Experiencing the same issue. I pressed the Light button and heard a pop and bright flash. I thought the bulb blew, which it did, but apparently it also zapped the control board. Mine is from 2016 (WMH31017FB - 0) and Whirlpool chat was not helpful once they got my S/N and saw that it was well out of warranty. They won't do much of anything beyond confirming for me that there were no recalls on this model. Before seeing this video, I just bought an LED bulb off of Amazon. It's a 5W LED (40W equivalent) and used about $.52 of electricity per year if left on 24/7, so decided to go that route and will likely stay that way unless I decide to buy the triac. Thanks for the video.

I discovered the failed triac a couple weeks ago after locating the schematic online. I ordered the part and soldered it in replacing the tested bad part. This took slightly longer time and required a little more skill than board swapping. The money saved was substantial compared to the board-swapping option. David Shaddock beat me to posting; and wrote a thorough posting at that. I am sure others can make this same fix, or at least try because it is cheap to do.

There is an easy way to take it off the wall and put it back on again. When I installed my Whirlpool I constructed a wood platform to sit on the cook top, 2 " lower than the microwave sits installed. Releasing the front mounting bolts dropped it at a slight angle, enough to lift the back out of the wall bracket clips with it resting square on the platform. I am a 73 year old DIY'er lacking the strength I had when younger, though I am still strong enough to lift it from the lower counter top of the island to the platform or the reverse. It was easy as pie :)

That was a great video explanation for my problem! Moved into a home the end of last month that has an otr microwave with this exact issue. The bulb was burnt out and been trying bulb after bulb, all staying on as soon as they're screwed in and the power is plugged back in. Nice to know there's a solution, but I'll have to weigh the decision of spending that much to replace a part or just buying a new one, because it is a bit older and who knows what kind of maintenance the previous owners of the home actually did.

This is a great video that covers the easiest way to fix. The board cost around 100 bucks tho...the component on the board that controls light dimming is called a Triac, and if you can find the schematics and are handy with a solder gun, you can replace just that part for much cheaper. Not everyone can solder tho, so this is best for most folks

This morning, I replaced the burnt out bulb with the same: a 40 watt Feit Electric 40-Watt EQ 2.2-in T7 Soft White Dimmable Appliance Light Bulb. Question: The bulb burnt out on my Whirlpool microwave. When I went to change the bulb, the bulb broke off of the base and got stuck in the socket. I unplugged the power and used pliers to unscrew the base that was stuck. It was a challenge because as you know, the socket faces towards the wall, and it's nearly impossible to see directly inside of it without pulling several muscles in your neck and back, or pulling the whole stove away from the wall to be able to stand right underneath it. So after struggling, I finally got it loose and unscrewed it, screwed in the new bulb, and plugged it back in. The button on the microwave that controlled the light worked perfectly fine before the bulb burnt out and I fiddled with it. So my question is...before I go replacing control panels or anything like that...is there something I might've done while I was trying to get the base of the bulb un-stuck? Like maybe loosened a connection of some sort? The microwave is only a year old, and that was the first time it needed the bulb changed since it was installed. Sorry for the novel about my bulb battle. Any advice would help! Thanks!

When the light won’t shut off the only way to fix it is to buy a new motherboard, and they range in price from $155 to over $350 plus tax and shipping. I looked at the replacement LED bulb... "not to be used with dimmers" in very small letters but nowhere mentioned on the packaging
The only way to turn it off was unscrew it and screw it back in and then it was off.

I found a cheaper fix for my Whirlpool WMH53521HZ-3 over range microwave that the bulb blew out and would not run off after replacing the 40W bulb (8206232A). The cause was on the control board. The Triac (BT136-600D, labeled 7919) had shorted. I unplugged the microwave, removed the control board and checked the resistance between MT1 (pin 1, nearest the white 6 pin connector ) and MT2 (pin 2, middle) there is a low resistance and it should be open with no power to the board. I purchased another Triac from DigiKey (Digikey 1740-1018-ND, $0.63 each), removed the old triac, and soldered the new one in. After installing the repaired control board, replacing the bulb, plugging in the microwave, the light can be turned off and controlled again. This is a lot cheaper than buying a new control board.

    • @chrissimon8368
      @chrissimon8368 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Why not use a relay instead of a Triac, to save a few cents? Then this problem could be avoided, and an LED would work. They ship new micros with 25-watt bulbs instead of 40 watts to save a few cents.

    • @williamhasenjaeger9732

@@chrissimon8368 Thanks for the tip! Put the new Triac in and the light works as it should. My microwave is a Maytag but the item was the same. Saved me the $250 Maytag wanted for the control board (plus a 4 - 6 week delivery). Such an easy and inexpensive fix!

I just changed the surface lightbulb on our 2020 model and used a 40w LED replacement. It cycles fine from full to half light but now the light won't go off. It worked fine with the old bulb and I can't believe changing the bulb affected the board. Odd though. I don't think I'll spend the $ on a new board, it's very dim when it should be off.

If the light stays on, then a relay may be stuck in the on position providing constant power to the bulb socket. Removing the bottom panel provides access to the bulb socket. Adding a switch to the positive line to the socket and installing the switch on the side of the case, would allow you to turn the light on and off.

OK, you asked for a cheaper way to fix the light problem. Here goes: I bought a single pole, single throw toggle switch and installed it on the bottom cover and wired it into one of the leads going to the light socket. Took about half hour and it is fixed. There is only one setting (full) but it beats paying a couple hundred bucks for a new board when you can buy a new microwave for a little more than that.

The Part# w10892389 - Search that, looks like amazon is sold out. The main site I use is partsselect if Wilmar is sold out of them. Whirlpool also sells them directly on their site. Keep in mind that they are expensive, so a more risky, but cheaper option would be to search eBay, or Facebook Marketplace. I know some techs that sell old used parts but if they have good feedback then it may be worth the risk and save you a bunch of money. Hope that helps.

Customers need to think twice before buying the Whirlpool microwave- wmh53521hz-5. When the light won’t shut off the only way to fix it is to buy a new motherboard, and they range in price from $156 to over $300 online plus tax and shipping. Also $150 for service call to install it. And it’s an inherent problem in this Whirlpool model. You can buy a new microwave for $450 or pay that much for repairs or buy an LED stick up under cabinet lights for $12 to $18 as a alternative solution.

A few months or so after receiving a new one, the door sensor was acting up where it wouldn't send a signal saying that the door is closed, so I had to do some internet searching and luckily I found a video on You tube. And now, I'm here again trying to figure out how to get the light to turn off after replacing the bulb. It's like the company pushed the product out w/out thoroughly testing it.
