I am surprised and shocked because I was under the impression that senior military Officers approach a crisis in terms of a plan A, plan B, plan C, etc. But perhaps this was a technique of the 80's, and not the 70's. What I am hearing here is that only plan A as seen from ONE perspective is the correct one, and that a 20-year old preparation plan is dismissed with impunity in favour of one which appears to be largely unknown. This is a lack of foresight that perhaps it is plan B that rescues plan A, and there is even a good possibility that they compliment each other in such a way as to render the final outcome a success. We must not be led into a false sense of comfort by past career successes and project them as ultimate knowledge. I think it was Patton who applied WWII thinking in Korea in 1950 and was humiliated. Think, think, and think again.

Plan B and C are for those planning to fail. One sticks to Plan A and improve according to situational demands. There is no management in the military; instead, we lead by example.
