Artograph Tracer and Inspire 800 projectors w/ Lachri

- Whether you want to trace your whole project or just project a larger version of your own sketch onto your canvas or wall, projectors can be a huge help! They are not created equally though. I'm sharing my experience with the Artograph Tracer projector and the Artograph Inspire800 Digital Projectors. I will do a full review and tutorial on the Inspire 800 at some point, in this video I'm just covering the basics and showing you how bright each projector will get.

This is so helpful! I've been wanting a projector for a while, but don't want to invest in one unless I know I'll use it a lot. If I actually start painting more, then I might get one!
I was a bit hesitant myself just because I almost never used my old one. I find myself using the digital one all the time now just because it's so much easier to set up. The really helpful thing with this one is how bright it is during the day. I could see myself using it at workshops to have some of my videos playing in the background or for presentations. It can do a lot... although I think for the price it should also clean my studio :P
It did clean your studio, You were taken to the cleaners and that made buying other stuff less possible since you're BROKE!!!!

Yeah, don't push that battery into place when it resists lol. Found that out the hard way haha! Hopefully they will have fixed the problem though so others don't have to deal with it.

Lisa, one day you should check out the fabulous documentary, Tim's Vermeer. In it, a man, Tim, tries to figure out how Vermeer painted his works.
As an artist, I can't recommend it more. Vermeer never told anyone how he made his paintings, and for decades we've been trying to figure out how he did it.
The film follows his 5-year ish journey to reproduce a Vermeer, and he fricking did it. Anyway, the point is, the technique he used is FASCINATING and I would LOVE to try it. You should check it out!

Erin Yes! When Lisa flipped the Tracer over to display its mirror system, I immediately thought of Vermeer's camera obscura and "Tim's Vermeer".
So what did Vermeer do? Trace it somehow?

I too have been looking at projector. There is such a wide variety of machines, prices and capabilities it is hard to choose. Like all of us, price is a big concern, but I want something also that will perform well for my needs. I only need a machine that will help me to transfer my drawings to canvases and possibly a mural where I work in a school. So there is dilemma about which one. Have been looking at a larger table model of the Artograph that takes a 7-inch drawing. I am considering that one at $250 or so. Thanks for the very complete video. This helped a lot.

i was just looking into getting a vertical monitor because the 16:10 ratio is not at all ideal for displaying images for reference. this seems like an even better idea. i have a flat-white wall right beside my desk. do the images show up well on walls (i noticed you were using canvas)?

wow thank you for the info, I use an old school type overhead projector, it was around 250.00 ten years ago. Its hugh compared to the projects you've shown us, it gets hot, I have to pull it super close to the canvas's and drawing paper that I want to transfur. But the biggest draw back is that I have to trace my drawings out onto clear asate, for me thats not easy when you have to make the drawing super small to begin with. OMGoodness these that you've shown would be fantast for me even the one you first showed us.
Oh my I'ed really like to have the have is that last one, :) I know what I want santa to bring me :)
You can also take your drawings to a printer and have them printed on acetate, I have an overhead too.
How does the artigraph compare to presentation projectors? Is it more color correct, or have less lens distortion? I've heard the distortion is an issue in projection.

It is a surprise to me (after seeing the interesting comments of other viewers) we all struggle with proportions etc.. the idea of not using any devices is to train your eye to become a better artist. How fulfilling would that be Knowing you can draw without using this kinda stuff? Saving some time on tracing! That was the ridiculous part. Paying 800 bucks is another. Use a prospek or a measuring tool instead of these devices. Btw a regular projector, one that used in let's say meeting rooms won't work? It would. So if u r not interested in getting better at drawing, save urself alot of money and just get urself a 50 to 100 bucks projector that connects to ur phone or computer. (I do not recommend it). I am glad this video came up as a recommended video while searching for how to become better at drawing lolol. The lady in the video seemed very exited, for that alone I will give this video a thumb up and thx for uploading. Note to whoever reads this:" plz save me your what about verneer and other great masters. Lol when you become a master of light and shadow, color theory and edge control master I shall kneel and worship you lol . Thx".

Can I use ordinary portable projectors for artphojectors
I usually just blow up the image on my computer screen and trace it off of there. Using a projected would save me a lot of time though because I wouldn't need to transfer the traced image onto my panel. Maybe someday if i can afford it after I've updated my camera and other equipment.

Many buttons batteries are the right diameter, but slightly thicker or thinner.
I found that out a few weeks ago.
Would a normal cheap projector (100 Euro) ,connected to a PC, also work or couldnt´t you project an image which is relatively high and narrow?
How about replacing the bulb inside the Tracer with a very bright LED bulb? that would solve the heat issue und produce a much clearer image (providing the lens is sharp).

With "any projector," there will be distortions. Using a "grid," is tremendously helpful, in correcting those distortions. A proportional divider is also helps to make quick adjustments.
So do you draw this way usually or do you freehanding too?? Just wondering ^_^
Thank you for this, Lisa :-) I gather the resolution on the Inspire 800 is very high? I do a lot of street scenes, where detail is key, and the projector I have now reduces the fine stuff to little rectangles.
Also, how close to the canvas or paper can you get it? A lot of my work is at 9"x12" or 12"x18" size.

does the 800 have a zoom function I normally work on 9 by 12 or 12 by 16
You just control it by how close you have it to your canvas. Further away will be larger, closer will be smaller.
Do you know where you can purchase the Autograph inspire?
im really confused now... it seems like every artograph model is the same as the lg version but cheaper, do they project the same quality if someone knows the answer thank you
Can't buy these in the UK, anymore it would seem at least. I've been looking to buy a projector to blow up photos onto my canvas, no idea which to buy. Some pretty decent multimedia ones for £52-70 but not sure how the images come out.
The Tracer hasn't changed in 30 years until yesterday when I modded mine to cordless Lithium ion LED
have you heard of a new tablet calked the slate. You draw with pencils or colored pencils. as you draw it but it on the screen. Just as you have drawn it. Wow it looks anazing
How big is the distortion the First Projector makes ?The distortion does not Look so much Different to the Second ,expensive one.
don't mind about colour too much for good painter artist just copy good form for large painting projection is the most important , just need win time ittle more ! thanks !
The Artograph Tracer and Inspire 800 projector is no longer available on Amazon. Is it available anywhere else?
No, I think they've been discontinued. Any digital projector should give you similar results though as long as there is a way to have a static image.

I actually contacted autograph through their youtube page and asked about the 800 model here is the response they gave. The Artograph Inspire800 is able to zoom when using reference images via a USB. Thanks for the info. One can buy a much lesser projector. After all, it's about proportion that can make or break a repro. As long as I have that, I'm good. In all due respect, I think you could recite the entire library of Congress in an hour and a half. ( Jk)😝

How big can the inspire project the image? 14ft tall?
I'm not sure. I've used it up to 36x48" but that's no where near the size you're looking at. They don't make this model anymore so I can't look it up. For the newer models I would recommend contacting the manufacturer.
I love it when bad design is blamed on the user. Every time our washer breaks in the apt building "we put the clothes in wrong".

Ok some things here:
1- I LOVE your wristband, I have 4, metal, skulls, blood, on them.
2- Copy paste of a comment I made a day or two: I have to go to the postal office the next week, want some Faber Castell's borracha pencil erasers? NO, they are not expensive, NO I don't mind, the art store is literally infront of the postal office and send them costs like a dollar or less, so it all takes me like... one minute or less to do.
3- Why don't you use a pantograph? cheaper, easy to use, gives you the general idea.

3- Those are really cool but don't allow for as much placement control as you can get with a projector. It's so easy to end up too far to the right/left/too small/large with those. They certainly are helpful devices though!

Unfortunately this specific model was discontinued, but any digital projector should work well as long as it can display a static image.

I have a tracer and it does all she said very limited and everthing has to be just right darkness and level up for projection too many issues plus the focus only gets clear to certain extent. i want to get the 800 but it cost 6-800.00 that's alot i wish they had one for 400.00 thats more affordable.
I bet you could use a cheaper projector and get similar results. I don't think they even make this one anymore. I've not seen it online anyway when I looked.

this unit or units like it hard to find , seems risky to invest 5 bills on this unit
I love the image on the digital projector but I cannot justify paying several hundred dollars for one. Maybe I'll get a mini or used LCD worst case scenario.
I honestly suspect the cheaper ones will work well too. The main bonus of this one was the software. :)
I think there are several HD 1080p projectors for like $70 would work to just project a digital image... but certainly not as nice as what I'm dreaming of, like that Artograph 1000 that's out now. Definitely for someday, when I can no longer find a decent workaround, or for when I just have to have it. LOL! Right now the Artograph 1000 is at $667...but it is certainly awesome, with awesome features for artists....You know, AmazonStore card has 1 year financing for purchases over $600, so..... LOL!!
HOOOLY.. so the biggest difference is the contrast ratio. The way lower priced projectors are 2000:1 and the Artograph and LG are 100000:1. But then again, would I notice this? idk.. I need a TH-cam video review and comparison. Hmm... maybe I just really need this new toy. lol
