    I'll be honest, I don't pay attention in class because I know for a fact that I'll just come home and watch Fort Bend's Tutoring video about our lesson in Math. The bonus factor is that I will understand in under 15 minutes what my teacher struggles to explain in 50 minutes.

    I love these problems where you need to incorporate other skills (like finding the LCD, factoring, etc.), especially when they make the problem so much easier. It's all coming together and starts to make sense, and I get the idea that all this will be applicable to real world engineering and science solutions. Just think, you might be influencing some young (or older) mind to become the person who saves planet Earth from a swarm of rogue asteroids. (who ya' gonna; call,? Asteroid Busters!) in 2:31 where did that -10 come from? why did you subtract 10 to both sides?

    • @FortBendTutoring
      @FortBendTutoring  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +tao pisten It was to isolate the term with the variable. I used the additive inverse of 10, which is -10, so that I could eliminate that term on the right side of the equal sign.

    Question. . . at around 6:08, you are setting the equation to 0. In my calculations, I did so by subtracting 2x from each side. I ended up with an answer identical, but, with the signs reversed. Why wouldn't this work? I subtracted 2x from each side to get 0 on the left, then rearranged the remaining numbers on the right to fit into a quadratic equation... but doing so made the leading coefficient -6 vs positive six, and while this gave me an incorrect answer, I'm curious as to why because I don't see how it broke any "rules"

    • @FortBendTutoring
      @FortBendTutoring  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Beethoven1111 You can use that process just add the step of dividing or multiplying the equation by -1 which will change the signs. Once that’s done, your leading term will be positive.

    • @Beethoven1111
      @Beethoven1111 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do see what you're saying, however, how would one intuitively know to do that? Because to me, as I'm learning this, I wouldn't have assumed to do that - because when I subtract 2x from each side, then re-arrange to fit within a quadratic equation, I don't see anywhere where I'm messing with anythings positive or negative value. The equation ends up as -6xsquared + x + 1 = 0
      I appreciate the reply, it is always nice to see a TH-cam Channel where the talent replies back and interacts with the community.

    • @jonwill
      @jonwill ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FortBendTutoring Is a more complete answer that: once you reach a point where further factoring is not possible, you check your math tool box for something that could help you continue. In this case over by the 'difference of squares' tool is the 'divide or multiply by (-)' tool. So, while intuition is invaluable this instance doesn't really require it, but more so good process and sound foundation.

    • @FortBendTutoring
      @FortBendTutoring  ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely Jon! Thanks 4 your input! Additionally, we can focus on the goal and that’s solving for a positive variable with a coefficient of one that doesn’t make the original statement undefined.

    Ok, so my teacher gave us a word problem.... here is similar one ...Bill and Will are brothers who are both taking graduate level art classes. To help pay off their student loans, they decide to sell watercolor replicas of Andy Warhol's art. To produce one piece of work, Bill takes 0.5 hours less than Will. Working together, it takes them 2 hours. Find the time it would take each of them if they worked individually. Round your answers to 2 decimal places. When I do the total time together word problems I get it. But I am un clear how to find individual time. Would the equation be st up 1/t +1.5/t = 1/2

      +Wilmari Eckerson The setup is 1/t + 1/(t-.5) = 1/2 Check out the following video: th-cam.com/video/X8dxgr-cIu8/w-d-xo.html

    why do you need to subtract 10 both side. i mean don't you have to add 10 to both side

    • @FortBendTutoring
      @FortBendTutoring  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Eric chhun In order to isolate the term with the variable, we subtracted 10 from both sides of the equation.

      +Fort Bend Tutoring but I thought you have to add the 10 to both side
