I completely agree about "learning on the job". So many of the highest paid people I've ever met just happen to be charismatic, not necessarily super smart
Omg I felt that. I’m in sales and sometimes I get caught in my imposter syndrome thinking how many meetings I get just because I’m more charismatic than smart or with a amazing sales pitch at first..
The way my mind was blown in my tech job when I looked at some excel sheets and told my boss what the numbers meant, and he turned around in a meeting and said we'd "analyzed the data and recommend XYZ" truly turning what was 15 minutes of nothing work by me into some buzzy impressive BS. Honestly, this was when I realized I was doing the work, but it wouldn't be recognized because I was explaining what I did like a human instead of a patagonia fleece with an MBA. Anyway, I work in a museum now and absolutely love it. Crossing my fingers for you!
As an English major who decided not to go into teaching, I have to live with this same delusion 😅 when your livelihood depends on it, most people can learn anything!
@@TheBeatlesToday it’s kind of a trope that there are not a lot of “good”, specialized, or attainable jobs for English majors (see the Avenue Q cast album) I majored in English Ed so it was even more unusual for me to change fields
I feel this so much. I set my cap to apply for 5 -10 jobs a week when I was in my first month of unemployment. Then it slowly fizzled to 3 a month bc I was so tired of rejections or companies ghosting me. And the few interviews I got led me to nowhere so i actually started to deeply think what I want to do for a job. I don't care about a career, I just want a job that's not mentally draining and that I like doing day-to-day tasks. So far, to pay the bills I had to take up teaching jobs which I dislike to my core. I have an English/Art History double major degree and there's a huge shortage of English teachers so that's all I could get so far.
Don't feel bad at all. Teaching has taken me all over the world and I may just go back to teaching abroad. Teaching abroad I love, teaching in the U.S., not so much.
The part about buzzwords and bs terms is so true😂😂 I was so overwhelmed when I got my first professional job and entered the workforce now I straight up ask, "what does that mean?" and "could you clarify that?" and a good 70% of the time they can't lmao
I appreciate your content so much. It's so refreshing, honest, and on point with what's going on today right now as we speak. I think you're helping people pull themselves out of the matrix, take a good look at themselves and not be afraid to sort themselves out. Btw there is nothing "narcissistic" about you. You are warm, humble, adorable and a sweet heart.
Yes this is EXACTLY why I love her content! She’s so refreshing and relatable and makes me feel less alone in my sentiment. Also makes me feel like the way I see the world isn’t wrong
This video really hit home for me. I'm in my second month of job hunting, and I find the whole process so demoralizing. Thank you for reminding me to treat myself with grace and kindness during this stressful process.
I am in charge of hiring in my lil department rn, and I totally get the struggle of tailoring resumes 😫 however on the hiring end it DOES spike my endorphins when I read an application that someone actually did thoroughly
These types of videos are so comforting for me. I’m so glad you are open about this. I recently just quit a job that I was forced into really young by my parents because of family business. But, finally leaving close to the middle of my 20’s and having no idea what to do, but wanting to change careers. You really feel like a friend, it’s so nice to hear someone else in a similar but different situation
I just had a job interview last night, one that I am fully qualified to do and I got off the zoom call thinking "I dont want to work!" 😅 But at last, I like to travel and eat sushi which both require money. I'm trying to refrain my mind and speech to say "this job is a means to an end, it doesn't have to be a passion, it just has to not stress me out." So we shall see where I end up professionally.
This video came at the perfect moment! I have been job hunting for a month and finally got 2 interviews this week including one tomorrow for what look like an exciting position in a cool company! Dealing with rejection has been pretty hard but I completely agree with you and I have been applying to only jobs I really want, not just applying to any jobs blindly 🙏🏻
@@ritacunha7045 My number 1 tip would be to not loose hope and keep going no matter how defeating it is to get rejections 💪🏻 This job I was so excited about fell through as they decide to hire internally and I was so gutted, I kept having no luck but now I did 3 interviews last week, I'm in last stages in all of them so it's looking good 🤞🏻 I'm also so glad I didn't gave up and took any job I didn't like that much as one of the job I'm in the running for now is my absolute dream job!
My contract ends in July and I’m so scared to find a new job because I literally don’t know what I want to do. So your videos are very comforting so I know I’m not alone!
The structure of the job is such an underrated aspect. I'm a double major (English Lit and Media&Comms) and my original goal was to work in either tv or the film industry. I think reading scripts and evaluating them has been the only job where I truly love the activity I was doing (ironically, I've only done it as an unpaid intern), but I realised super fast that was not the life I wanted. I am a friendly introvert with TONS of hobbies, fuck the career, I knew I could live a happily and have fulfilling life anyway. At some point in my life, I ended up in film/tv post-production and I worked with this company for almost 3 years. I knew nothing about post, but they needed one person for the back office/ops team willing to do the nights (something I have always wanted to try). And daaaamn, did I love that job. I found the perfect middle ground between a structure that worked for me (some people scattered around a gigantic building I could find and talk to if I wanted, but plenty of one-person jobs and complete control over my own tasks) and a final goal I cared about. My line of work was "below" what ends up in the credits, but I felt truly part of the process, every time I carried around a hard drive and plug it in, I told myself stuff like "wow, there's Poe Dameron in here, I'd better be careful" 😆 I knew that me doing my job contributed to the actual making of a movie (yes, perhaps anyone could do my job, but I was doing it with love and excitement and that was enough for me!). It made me really happy. Now my life is very different and my current job has mostly been chosen because of the structure (completely flexible and remote, with a very cool and supportive team) and it's working put super well. Sorry for the wall of text 🤣 job hunting is a hell of a process and not something I have found a lot of videos about, so thank you for sharing! x
I’ve been working retail for 2 years now and just stepped down from full-time work to part-time after the craziness of the holidays and seeing few improvements with my depression. Ngl, you were low key my inspiration. I’m hoping to pivot and start looking for full-time work that isn’t in retail in March. All of it seems very daunting, I’ve definitely grown to feel comfortable in retail. So anything outside of that feels really scary. But at least I’m comforted by knowing that you’re also going through the same shit. Excited to hear about the rest of your journey.
omg i'm so honored to inspire any part of this! having worked retail for just a few months i can say that those skills are soooo transferrable you are so capable!
I looove this series thank you so much. I'm unemployed due to moving to France from the UK with my husband and it's tough to know what the hell direction to take and feeling v alone in that so this gives me a little reassurance and guidance aha
I’m a recruiter and think you have a great strategy and mindset for your job search! Being selective is a good idea especially if you have the privilege of doing so. Good luck! I’m sure you’ll find something in no time.
I work for a labor union in Seattle and we have openings but I'm not sure if you'd like it. All positions are 5 days a week and most positions are 90% remote except for a few departments but those positions typically require that you have a car (there is a car and gas allowance) because you have to drive around and organize. Staff-level positions at the union are themselves unionized. Feel free to reach out if you have questions! 🙂
I’d love to see a video about how you choose which jobs to apply to/what questions you would ask in an interview to make sure it’s a good fit and has a culture you could see yourself fitting into. (As someone who’s also about to start a job hunt this would be really helpful!)
I am an occupational therapy student!!! It was cool to hear you like the content of the field. USC has a great OT program and I considered applying. Anyway, I believe OT helps all, not just those who "qualify" for services. Like to me, OT is the ultimate life coach given how vast the scope of practice is and how it is evidence based. Thanks for the genuine content!!
I've struggled a lot with not thinking I can do certain jobs, when really, like you said, the people at the "top" usually don't know what they're doing!!!! You feel a lot better about yourself when you start to realize that.
I needed this video right now!! I am in the middle of looking for jobs and i totally agree with the demoralizing aspect of job descriptions. I’m trying to do two jobs a day 😢 but if I hit one I’m proud of myself. Best of luck in your job search! I know we will both find our right places. Also it’s funny how similar our thinking is in this process. I just stopped the spray and pray approach and I hope it pans out
I am in tech and I wish I could be hired based on my learning agility, but from my experience I have been told I didn’t get the job because there were competitors who had all of the hard skills.
I've followed you on and off for a few years and it's funny to run into this video now because I recently left my job in IT Change management to take some time away from work and decide how I want to refocus my career & work on hobbies. Thanks for sharing your experience, nice to know I'm not alone!
I quit my job before xmas and have done my applications to go back to uni, now that the initial thrill of leaving a job I wasn't happy in has worn off the fear is def settling in... I'm trying to stay positive and seeing your mindset and approach is really refreshing!
Those intro memes I felt in my soul. Thank u for sharing this journey cause I’m on it too lol. Tech busted me up I literally cannot fathom listening to tech as a hobby. And tech influencers who make videos on how to optimize I’m like damn you are a very different person from me lol.
i love this thinking "well i could learn that and be at this job" yes!!! i feel like job descriptions make it seem like you'd need to go to college again to learn some stuff but it's all quite simple actually
I will say, in my experience, one role that’s hard to do well is being a manager. It’s not hard to be a manager, but it IS hard to be a good manager. Most people get promoted to management roles because they were good at the specific duties of their job, not because they have demonstrated any people management skills, so you end up with a lot of bad managers. I love being a people manager, but it can also be very emotionally taxing. You often wear many hats, as a teacher, a professional mentor, a conflict mediator, a brainstorming buddy, and sometimes even a shoulder to cry on - so just keep that in mind!
I took 8 months off, jumping back in shortly. But honestly I dont want to work at all. This time around, im going to work 3 full time engineer jobs with the goal of quitting in 3 years with no debt. I want to build my own things, do my own activities.
If your job is a non-technical, i.e not engineering, trades, doctor, accounting, you can quickly learn the skills. Unfortunately, these jobs don't pay as well and you're more expendable because you can be easily replaced.
Super interesting cause I work in social media marketing and it’s super fun but the thing is I’m quitting cause social media marketing is 24/7 like if you have the passion for it, go for it but if you want a job that never ends even after hours and on the weekends, social media marketing is for you!
I don't think that's narcissistic at all. Once I started my job, I realized real fast I could have done it years ago because all you really need to have is the willingness to learn. It's both annoying and encouraging as who is also job hunting and trying to pivot career paths. And I'm right there with you in having to stop just applying for jobs I could learn or get and start figuring what I actually want to do. That feels like the hardest part! Thank you for this video. You described what I was feeling so well!
lol FACTS on the you CAN do any job. I also learned 99.9% of what I needed to know on the job and came in with like 0.01% of what I needed to know lmao will keep you updated if I hear of any job listings with said criteria!!
thank you so much for this video!! i went into a job straight out of college that i don’t really like, but i hate job hunting, so i’ve been putting off finding a job that would be a better fit for me because of that. your honesty around this topic is refreshing and i think i’ll start looking for other jobs soon ❤
So refreshing to hear! I was laid off from my data science job in big tech and decided to take time off until it makes sense for me to pick up the job hunt again. You pretty much sum up how I feel about taking the next role, I wish more people would talk about this. Good luck in finding the next thing! :)
This is so in tune with where I am in life omg - I left tech in the fall of 2021 and decided to spend more time in the acting/entertainment world while working part-time , but now I'm starting to think about if there's another career I want to pursue full time, so I appreciate this video so much because I think I'm kinda in the same boat and I appreciate you sharing so much!!
Just as a heads up, vision insurance is STUPID cheap (I'm in the industry) so if you really gotta do it, just get that alone at least for now until you are "with job" haha
the beginning of this is how i'm feeling (2 months into lay off) 100%. My heart hates the idea of even applying for a job, better yet getting one. Meanwhile my bank account and ability to live freely is cursing me out every day.
Hey! Recent graduate from Seattle Tacoma area here. Your videos are great. I’ve been an overachiever my entire life and I’m trying to find a way to chill lol it’s definitely a process.
The way leadership in any field is full of people who just use buzzwords and bs to get to the top! I work as an admin assistant for a nonprofit and the leadership in the agency partnership that I support are often times just using language to seem like they know what they’re saying. Clearly they have somehow bullshitted their way into leadership roles. I fully agree that almost anyone can do anything if you have the willingness to learn, being adaptable is so important!
Yep. It's mostly about if they like you and whether you have a head on your shoulders. The whole issue with these jobs is that they want someone who "fits" the role. It's only really in super technical stuff that you can properly sort people by skills. Obviously there's always going to be differences, but they're much smaller than people in these high up positions pretend they are.
I've been job hunting for almost 2 months now and it gets to a point where it feels like everything is stacked against you. I've had a couple of interviews but no offers which sucks a little bit more. I try to pace myself. Apply for 3 today, 1 tomorrow, maybe 5 the next day or none. I try not to apply when I'm feeling depressed or just over everything. I don't have the motivation anyway. But i'm slowly getting out of a depressive episode where i went a week without applying to any jobs and i found this video. It feels like right timing to get back on it. 😅 Thank you!
i love ur attitude because genuinelyyy you can learn most "soft skills" jobs in like 3 months top. i'm interning in a sales dept rn and i'm doing a lot of things that i was never trained for and it's totally fine. i was scared because im very messy and disorganised in my life but turns out managing other people's schedules is quite easy and fun. one girl started working here a year ago she barely speaks english, mind you we're from a small country so none of our buyers speak our language and all of the deals are negotiated in english. they hired her because she was there when the position was freed, kinda batshit!! last year the govt didn't have enough teachers so they would just hire anyone with a masters degree and give them 2 weeks training and off they go teach K-12. i was kind of disappointed by my masters but tbh i can do such a wide range of things and even teach with it so i'm not too worried about the future
Also consider a local coworking space for a remote job- I love mine, and as a extrovert working remotely, it's been so beneficial for my work life balance and mental health
I feel you. Got a new job at the beginning of this year which seemed to be a dream job for me, but sadly it became a totally different job once I started working there. I quit during my try-out time and now looking for something new. Curious to see more of your journey! Thanks for making this video, needed this during my job hunt 🙂
I highly suggest you look at employee-owned companies. I think if you feel you were overworked and undervalued at your previous job it might be a good fit. The pay is usually a bit less but the benefits are high and employee satisfaction is usually top notch as well
I've had the same experience breaking into the workforce with it being nowhere near as serious as I thought it would be, and I work in public service. The thing with public service is it's like the Hufflepuff house from Harry Potter - you have the people who are caring and want to help others, and then all the rest that couldn't get jobs anywhere else. And tbh, I think a lot of management is made up of "the rest" because they last the longest (bc they don't stress) and people who really care burn out and end up leaving bc they are the only person in their own proximity taking things seriously.
I love your channel so much. I found your yt a few months ago and have binged watched all of your videos since. I relate to so much of what you talk about especially in regards to the shift you've made from being an over-achiever to now anti-capitalist. Not that I've ever been an overachiever myself but can still relate to the sentiment. I have especially love your oversharing in Seattle series. Please let me know if you are ever in Sacramento I would love to meet you in person!!
I am also looking for a job. I am trying to do a career change into online English teaching. It's been a rough application process. I have worked on and off customer service retail onsite and contract writing for hobby job (not paid). At least it has ignited a spark into my self-learning of language and courses.
So much truth to what you’re saying. I’ve worked as a Motion Designer for about 10 years now for like 6 different companies, 3 being tech companies (yeah I bounce around a lot). I have one of the few jobs in corporate that’s truly really difficult to learn. And I don’t say that to be full of myself, it’s just one of those things that takes a long time to get good at. But I’ve always said to anyone that would listen, I can learn pretty much any job if I need to. Most corporate positions are kinda BS to be completely honest. I even feel that way about my roll as a motion designer. Basically just creating a whole lot of nothing for no reason. I’ve been contemplating a career shift for a while now because being a creative in the corporate world is driving me insane and taking a real toll on my mental health. I know the grass is always greener on the other side, but I want a job where I don’t have to constantly be churning out a from scratch digital product like an animated video. Still don’t know what I want to switch too, but I’m working on it.
Ahh that job rant and competency tied to titles was so good. I noticed the go-getters liked to make the jobs sound super tech-y and near impossible without their involvement. But really it’s not that bad lol.
I’m actually teaching a team from India to learn some of my responsibilities. And starting off they barely can put a power point together, and after a few months they can handle our tools and processes ezpz. Kinda weird thinking about that now… it was a lot of handholding but they get it down.
I hate the posturing of job hunting! Tailering a resume is the worst because I have to convince you to allow me to make you money?? It doesn't make sense lol. It's so artificial but such is the nature of working. Can you talk more about how you avoid being pigeon holed and how you were able to talk about your transferable skills? I have worked customer service for over two years and when looking for a change, I keep getting told to try something closer to the experience I already have. I stopped my job search to focus on building skills but I'd love to hear you speak more about the tactics you use to convince people you can do a job you've never done before (but you know you can do because we all have Google). Just a suggestion 😊. I appreciate the videos!
As someone who's an extrovert but who's been working remote for a while I JUST FIND THIS REASONING SO RELATABLE!! It's weird bc all my friends are introverts so I feel like I just adopted their reasoning from trying to work from home as much as possible. But I'm just not as happy that way, I think its not right for me.
Wow are we the same person? 😂 I have never put how I feel into words so perfectly. My friends are also all introverts and love working from home. I am starting to realize it is just not for me. I’ve been stuffing this realization way deep down for awhile because I actually love the people I work with, just not the job itself.
Why is this still so much more than I would do? I recently got a job that I love, but I was only applying to maybe 3 jobs a week. It took a couple months, but I thoroughly enjoyed the whole process. I would be so burnt out if I was applying to jobs every day.
my corporate job at a big retailer is like actually draining all my joy and i’ve been looking and applying for a while now for something else. idk it’s such a hard thing the job search
Yep! I was an art major in college, so once graduated I had a lot of unrelated day jobs as I worked on my art career at night. Most jobs are bullshit. If you went to college, no matter what major, and any college at all, you already have the capacity to learn a new job in a matter of months.
Im in Tacoma and work for the tribes. Lots of data/tech jobs and def at least some in-person work. Might be another avenue to explore in terms of environmental work.
I work as a travel nurse so I'm sure I probably change jobs more often that the average person, but I kinda enjoy submitting resumes and interviewing for jobs.
Have you noticed that we graduated from a certain field and then we end up in a different job that barely has any relation with our studies, or sometimes never. I mean not all people like that but at least me.
I'm 33 and thinking about my next gig (since my current one [also in tech] is ... aggggh), and your "why I won't be going back to big tech" section hit me like a ton of bricks. VERY INCONVENIENT but also thank you
Thank you so much for this video, as someone who has just finished law school, the job hunt can be brutal especially as a recovering overachiever trying to work in organisations instead of the law hustle. will for sure use your one job a day as my standard. Keep it up and all the best!
My first ever job was with my city government's Comms department. I ran the city's central social media, trained department heads in social media (for like, the parking team/ parks dept/ etc) & helped the Comms team with other things, like promoting the local arts festivals, back to school stuff, etc. I feel like that type of role would resonate with you? Local gov is very community focused, and most are unionised / offer flexible working ☺️ the pay isn't good but the benefits (dental, medical, etc) are usually great!
I currently work in tech (cybersecurity specifically) and word of advice - a job is a job imo. You should strive for financial freedom so you don’t have to work and focus on the more important things in life like traveling, family, hobbies etc. At the end of the day you’ll be working for a company that can take it all away from you at any moment if they feel like it, so why invest your life into it? My thoughts. Choose a job that will get you there the quickest.
This is exactly why my husband and I got into tech, for the remote work so we could finally move to a small town by the water, which will be doing in a few weeks - because of the financial freedom we have with our new jobs. It took a lot of work to get here & I feel grateful every day that we are here. I’ve worked jobs that fulfilled my friend and family and emotional needs but I’m simply not that person anymore. Huzzah for change!
This is so so helpful, thank you. I am a few weeks into my job hunt and just feeling like I am wandering aimlessly right now, getting so so intimidated by those dang cover letters/do I really meet the qualifications?, etc Thank you for uploading this
Working part time at a grocery store while looking for full time jobs and it sucks. I'm seriously considering just talking to my manager about going full time at the store, im already getting good hours and better pay than like half of the "benefits" listed for entry level positions. It's so frustrating man.
@T1duzz A different state by the beach! I took a few weeks off from job hunt burn out and then almost immediately found a full time job I already adore! Applying and interviewing sucks, but it did eventually work out!
I'm in the same place in my career, I'm not intimidated about ramping into new roles anymore. Nothing wrong with being confident in your critical thinking abilities. I don't tailor my resume, I try to make it a little unique and general. I'm looking for a place interested in an honest version of me. If I have to load in keywords for your automated system to pick me up... Not interested in doing business with you. The QUALITY of interviews I get has risen, cause I'm being picky this job hunt.
I burned out of teaching and am now a data analyst at a non profit. But, they got rid of merit based raises so I'm hunting for something else. It's rough out there
i'm a soc major I can relate. If i didn't have existentialism and my fighting arts I'd be lost. got laid off when the lockdowns started from a job I was at for 4 years and have been in a job limbo ever since.
brand of concealer? your chapstick is a rouge? That was a simple fantastic makeup routine. The look came out great on camera. Usually, i am exhausted by the fourth beauty product promoted. 😊i would consider buying that concealer.
This video came at the perfect moment, thank you for that! It's so good to know that I'm not alone, that this is not only in my head. I can relate to almost everything you said. I've been struggling with my professional life for a while now and while I'm currently employed, Im job hunting with the same mindset: trying to find a job that I really like and feel connected to. My anxiety is screaming at me because it feels like I'm not going anywhere, I'm never gonna find it (or if I do, never gonna get hired by it), and I'll never put my life on the right tracks, move forward, get settled etc. So just to hear you sharing your journey so close to mine is very comforting (specially cause I've been here since my preppy style!!! haha). thank you! and good luck 🤞
Cracking up that you called the people at the top 'bumbling idiots' bc I call them 'blundering dunderheads' hahaha loved this sentiment Also unless you have nothing else to do, 1/ day is a lot!!! My goal was 3/week and I felt like an overachiever 😆
I haven't had any fun lately, 😭❤🙂I love the kind and generous heartwarming atmosphere that you create, your kind, easygoing, warm vibe. ❤I like the essence how you live on. I need to be true to myself and find a job I am passionate about. I want to find a way to live as who I really am.
I’m getting ready to leave a decently paying job to teach abroad. So I’m taking a pay cut! I don’t know if I’m doing the right thing or not. 🤣 However, I really want to experience something different.
Sounds like u would be great at product management!! And I hear ya on urself treating urself with compassion and ur perspective being warped I did a design bootcamp and they told us to apply (though most were easy apply/didn’t have company specific questions) to 8 jobs a day mon-Fri That means 40 jobs a week By the end of my 4 month job search I applied to 300 but I was still a bit hard on myself for not meeting the requirement.
300?????? omfg were they trying to fry your brain??? since it’s a bootcamp their KPIs are about their grads getting jobs so i can see why they were so hard on you
@@Katherout it was also for their contract/legal. They had a job guarantee if you applied to 160 jobs a month. (i.e. by the end of the program if you did that for x amount of months and didn't have a job--you don't have to pay) I could afford to pay no matter what so I freed myself from that term and went a little "slower paced" but it was still brutal. spray & pray like u say. I'm guessing applying to a lot on linkedin also improves ur visibility to recruiters? but I'm not sure there.
The part about how most jobs are just about who can bullshit best is SO true. Also the part about trying to fit your essence into this company or job title every time being so tiring and gross....yep. The story about your mom btw is very common, many women do jobs without getting payed.
My internship is ending in april, its a very good job, small company, all super nice, bur the remote experience has been awful… i want to quit but almost all Jobs are remote 😢 I need to socialize and hace something that helps me more active and see day light and people I feel super scared to let go of this job , but its not good for me and i dont think i can take it anymore
Im looking for my first post-college job now in corporate New York as an architect. I’m definitely nervous and the whole process has been super annyoing. I’m waiting on offers and it’s making me a little crazy.
I appreciate the optimism of going for a role that maybe, *technically*, isn’t in your wheelhouse but the soft skills from other roles can be transferrable. My problem that I have had is that a lot of companies will not even look at you if you don’t have the hard skills they want. Maybe I’m just not wording something right on my resume, but I’ve just found that roles that are outside my wheelhouse, will not even give me the time of day.
I’m also in Seattle and looking for a new job 🫠 this video made me feel so seen lol i’m finding it really hard to find a company in Seattle whose mission i actually care about
idk if you’ll see this, but SEIU 775 benefits groups is unionized, supports the union of home care workers in Washington state, benefits are amazing. They’re a bit chaotic internally. But otherwise great!
Great video! I am in process of job hunting pretty soon and found your self-compassion and confidence in your belief inspiring Also, what’s the lip and cheek tint you’re using in the video?
You are 100% correct - most jobs can be learned by most people in 6 weeks or less.
It's only gatekeeping that prevents it.
I completely agree about "learning on the job". So many of the highest paid people I've ever met just happen to be charismatic, not necessarily super smart
Yassss i so agree with this
Seriously! If I've learned anything from my past office jobs, it's this.
Omg I felt that. I’m in sales and sometimes I get caught in my imposter syndrome thinking how many meetings I get just because I’m more charismatic than smart or with a amazing sales pitch at first..
ME! It's my mantra, "voy a aprender en el camino" and it worked!
I’ve been job hunting and i just hate having to describe myself within the context of a job - it’s humiliating for me 😭
The way my mind was blown in my tech job when I looked at some excel sheets and told my boss what the numbers meant, and he turned around in a meeting and said we'd "analyzed the data and recommend XYZ" truly turning what was 15 minutes of nothing work by me into some buzzy impressive BS. Honestly, this was when I realized I was doing the work, but it wouldn't be recognized because I was explaining what I did like a human instead of a patagonia fleece with an MBA.
Anyway, I work in a museum now and absolutely love it. Crossing my fingers for you!
Not Patagonia fleece with an MBA 💀💀💀
😂😂😂 why am I crying this was funny. This is why I hate the corporate world. I hate bulsh*ng and acting, I find it exhausting.
hahaha . i’m stuck in a corporate job rn that’s basically like that and this made me laugh
How did you come to work in a museum? What do you do there?
As an English major who decided not to go into teaching, I have to live with this same delusion 😅 when your livelihood depends on it, most people can learn anything!
i would think most teachers would actually have that attitude too since they're dependent on our ability to learn haha
Is that a stereotype, that English majors go into teaching? None of my friends who were English majors became teachers 😅
@@TheBeatlesToday it’s kind of a trope that there are not a lot of “good”, specialized, or attainable jobs for English majors (see the Avenue Q cast album) I majored in English Ed so it was even more unusual for me to change fields
Sammeee
same here!!
REAL
I am in charge of hiring in my lil department rn, and I totally get the struggle of tailoring resumes 😫 however on the hiring end it DOES spike my endorphins when I read an application that someone actually did thoroughly
there we go!!!
💓💓💓 glad we could connect on this
I just had a job interview last night, one that I am fully qualified to do and I got off the zoom call thinking "I dont want to work!" 😅 But at last, I like to travel and eat sushi which both require money. I'm trying to refrain my mind and speech to say "this job is a means to an end, it doesn't have to be a passion, it just has to not stress me out." So we shall see where I end up professionally.
so did you get the job?
This video came at the perfect moment! I have been job hunting for a month and finally got 2 interviews this week including one tomorrow for what look like an exciting position in a cool company! Dealing with rejection has been pretty hard but I completely agree with you and I have been applying to only jobs I really want, not just applying to any jobs blindly 🙏🏻
rejection is so ouchie but we will heal 🫶🏻
How did it go! I’m about to start this intimidating process myself *sigh*
I like how you have your savings account scenario
Sorry for the wall of text 🤣 job hunting is a hell of a process and not something I have found a lot of videos about, so thank you for sharing! x
How did you land that job?
I'm unemployed due to moving to France from the UK with my husband and it's tough to know what the hell direction to take and feeling v alone in that so this gives me a little reassurance and guidance aha
uncertainty can breed fear but self-compassion is the cure
I’m a recruiter and think you have a great strategy and mindset for your job search! Being selective is a good idea especially if you have the privilege of doing so. Good luck! I’m sure you’ll find something in no time.
I work for a labor union in Seattle and we have openings but I'm not sure if you'd like it. All positions are 5 days a week and most positions are 90% remote except for a few departments but those positions typically require that you have a car (there is a car and gas allowance) because you have to drive around and organize. Staff-level positions at the union are themselves unionized. Feel free to reach out if you have questions! 🙂
This is soooo great!!! You are good at observing the big picture and summarizing it!!! This is truly GOLD!!! I Love it!
I’d love to see a video about how you choose which jobs to apply to/what questions you would ask in an interview to make sure it’s a good fit and has a culture you could see yourself fitting into. (As someone who’s also about to start a job hunt this would be really helpful!)
this INTRO IS SUPERIOR OMFG
THANK YOU MY DEARRRRRR
I just stopped the spray and pray approach and I hope it pans out
it’s all a shot in the dark we’ll find the light soon 😎
@@Katherout no lies were told in this statement 😄
Tech busted me up
I literally cannot fathom listening to tech as a hobby. And tech influencers who make videos on how to optimize I’m like damn you are a very different person from me lol.
TECH BUSTED US UP!!
i love this thinking "well i could learn that and be at this job" yes!!! i feel like job descriptions make it seem like you'd need to go to college again to learn some stuff but it's all quite simple actually
Sounds awfully similar to being a teacher teacher. Tonne of different interpersonal jobs all of them deeply taxing.
I absolutely loved the learning from your mom’s past and just listening to you basically gush for 3mins about your mom 💗
thank you so much for this video!! i went into a job straight out of college that i don’t really like, but i hate job hunting, so i’ve been putting off finding a job that would be a better fit for me because of that. your honesty around this topic is refreshing and i think i’ll start looking for other jobs soon ❤
So refreshing to hear! I was laid off from my data science job in big tech and decided to take time off until it makes sense for me to pick up the job hunt again. You pretty much sum up how I feel about taking the next role, I wish more people would talk about this. Good luck in finding the next thing! :)
Can confirm based on my own job(s) past and present, you can for sure figure out most of these jobs on the go.
Never have I seen a more relatable video title. We all deserve a job/place where we are treated well and can grow and thrive ❤
😅 Thank you!
i love ur attitude because genuinelyyy you can learn most "soft skills" jobs in like 3 months top.
i'm interning in a sales dept rn and i'm doing a lot of things that i was never trained for and it's totally fine. i was scared because im very messy and disorganised in my life but turns out managing other people's schedules is quite easy and fun. one girl started working here a year ago she barely speaks english, mind you we're from a small country so none of our buyers speak our language and all of the deals are negotiated in english. they hired her because she was there when the position was freed, kinda batshit!!
last year the govt didn't have enough teachers so they would just hire anyone with a masters degree and give them 2 weeks training and off they go teach K-12. i was kind of disappointed by my masters but tbh i can do such a wide range of things and even teach with it so i'm not too worried about the future
totally!!!!! you get it
Also consider a local coworking space for a remote job- I love mine, and as a extrovert working remotely, it's been so beneficial for my work life balance and mental health
do folks socialize or is it moreso just the ambiance of being around people at yours?
I feel you. Got a new job at the beginning of this year which seemed to be a dream job for me, but sadly it became a totally different job once I started working there. I quit during my try-out time and now looking for something new.
Curious to see more of your journey! Thanks for making this video, needed this during my job hunt 🙂
Absolutely. I always quickly figure out all the jobs I have had! I am a quick learner and I take direction and I am very curious.
I appreciate the videos!
i would try to find examples in your life that point to those skills, sometimes i talk about my volunteer work or patreon to show evidence!
Something about you calling project management just "a bunch of frameworks" is so funny because yeah you're right
I work as a travel nurse so I'm sure I probably change jobs more often that the average person, but I kinda enjoy submitting resumes and interviewing for jobs.
that intro 🤣🤣
I think you can apply to work at People First or More Perfect Union, although they’re usually fully remote positions
Yes!!! More Perfect Union could be an amazing job for you!! It’s a company that does a lot of good with their social media content!!
This is so so helpful, thank you. I am a few weeks into my job hunt and just feeling like I am wandering aimlessly right now, getting so so intimidated by those dang cover letters/do I really meet the qualifications?, etc
Thank you for uploading this
Working part time at a grocery store while looking for full time jobs and it sucks. I'm seriously considering just talking to my manager about going full time at the store, im already getting good hours and better pay than like half of the "benefits" listed for entry level positions. It's so frustrating man.
If it makes you happy, why not? Im curious as to where you ended up?
@T1duzz A different state by the beach! I took a few weeks off from job hunt burn out and then almost immediately found a full time job I already adore! Applying and interviewing sucks, but it did eventually work out!
I'm in the same place in my career, I'm not intimidated about ramping into new roles anymore. Nothing wrong with being confident in your critical thinking abilities.
I don't tailor my resume, I try to make it a little unique and general. I'm looking for a place interested in an honest version of me. If I have to load in keywords for your automated system to pick me up... Not interested in doing business with you. The QUALITY of interviews I get has risen, cause I'm being picky this job hunt.
ooo I like this idea!! how do you go about making your resume unique? (I’m still in college so I don’t have a lot of experience yet).
we all can george santos our way in for getting jobs.
hahahah
I burned out of teaching and am now a data analyst at a non profit. But, they got rid of merit based raises so I'm hunting for something else. It's rough out there
ROUGHHH 😢
i'm a soc major I can relate.
You are such a great fit for higher Ed! You can do anything in corporate in higher Ed but it has a great mission
HERE SINCE MYPREPPYSTYLE???? you deserve a medal for watching me grow upppp
Cracking up that you called the people at the top 'bumbling idiots' bc I call them 'blundering dunderheads' hahaha loved this sentiment
Also unless you have nothing else to do, 1/ day is a lot!!!
"he got fired"
me: *chuckles*
the way i said it was a lil comedic it’s true
she reading my inner feelings and thoughts..
Sounds like u would be great at product management!!
And I hear ya on urself treating urself with compassion and ur perspective being warped
I did a design bootcamp and they told us to apply (though most were easy apply/didn’t have company specific questions) to 8 jobs a day mon-Fri
That means 40 jobs a week
By the end of my 4 month job search I applied to 300 but I was still a bit hard on myself for not meeting the requirement.
300?????? omfg were they trying to fry your brain??? since it’s a bootcamp their KPIs are about their grads getting jobs so i can see why they were so hard on you
@@Katherout it was also for their contract/legal. They had a job guarantee if you applied to 160 jobs a month. (i.e. by the end of the program if you did that for x amount of months and didn't have a job--you don't have to pay)
I could afford to pay no matter what so I freed myself from that term and went a little "slower paced" but it was still brutal. spray & pray like u say.
My internship is ending in april, its a very good job, small company, all super nice, bur the remote experience has been awful… i want to quit but almost all Jobs are remote 😢
I need to socialize and hace something that helps me more active and see day light and people
I feel super scared to let go of this job , but its not good for me and i dont think i can take it anymore
Im looking for my first post-college job now in corporate New York as an architect. I’m definitely nervous and the whole process has been super annyoing. I’m waiting on offers and it’s making me a little crazy.
Im in the process of this now. Getting the first full time job is hard forsure, it takes a long time!!!
i was in a state of psychological distress trying to get my first full time job this is so much more relaxed by comparison 😅
@@Katherout I bet!!
I appreciate the optimism of going for a role that maybe, *technically*, isn’t in your wheelhouse but the soft skills from other roles can be transferrable. My problem that I have had is that a lot of companies will not even look at you if you don’t have the hard skills they want. Maybe I’m just not wording something right on my resume, but I’ve just found that roles that are outside my wheelhouse, will not even give me the time of day.
it’s true a lot of them won’t! sometimes takes a connection or a reach out to the hiring manager directly
agree lol. I think anyone can do any non technical jobs, everything is learnable
thank u for making me feel sane
I’m also in Seattle and looking for a new job 🫠 this video made me feel so seen lol i’m finding it really hard to find a company in Seattle whose mission i actually care about
This makes me feel better at looking for jobs in Seattle now 💀 even if layoffs are happening. Anything is possible.
I'm a programmer in tech and I think my coworkers are pretty smart tbh.
@katherout, what did you learn from your occupational therapy classes? so interesting that it stuck more than your major-related courses.

idk if you’ll see this, but SEIU 775 benefits groups is unionized, supports the union of home care workers in Washington state, benefits are amazing. They’re a bit chaotic internally. But otherwise great!
Great video! I am in process of job hunting pretty soon and found your self-compassion and confidence in your belief inspiring
Also, what’s the lip and cheek tint you’re using in the video?
