I've never looked into any Witchfinder (or most of the Hellboy-verse stories, actually) but you make it sound fun! Maybe one day you can make up a crazy reading order for all the other series around Hellboy?😊

Happy Christmas brother to you and yours. Just seen your comment on near mint conditions review of his book of the year Monsters. We share an opinion of that book with the bleak destruction of innocence being unbearable at times but I'm about to re,-read it and know I'll love it more now knowing what's to come. But...seeing your comment reminded me that I've read quite a few books you've reviewed so he's my take. Witchfinder omnibus vol 1 blew me away. On first reads it's the best Mignola work I've read so far. That said, as I've mentioned before, I'm going to re-read hellboys entire main story collection through again next year and it will vastly improve for me. Kinda like Grant Morrisons work...they get better with re-reads! Loved the Victorian setting in Witchfinder and look forward to omnibus 2 which should eventually come out very soon! Hope it lives up to the first book. Happy new year :)

Genuinely if he had just edited a handful of pages out and made the science fiction and domestic abuse sections blend better it would have been one of my favourites of the year; a very near miss of a perfect book for me that. So glad you liked witchfinder, it was only the western story that was a little run of the mill for me; still lived it but the 1st and 3rd story arcs were by far the strongest. And the third with all the eel madness was superb. I have volume 2 lined up ready! 🤞
This video reminds me that I read this book last Christmas, and as you say, it doesn't knock the wind out of you, but is still a solid read. The second omnibus volume of these is just around the corner, is it not? Fairly sure we'll be feasting our eyes on that book on the channel here soon enough then! Have you read the Baltimore hardcovers? I just got them a couple of weeks back, but haven't got around to starting on them. I'm a fan of Mike Mignola and have enjoyed much of his "verse", i have yet to dip my toes into this set of books or Baltimore but this makes me the more eager. I have most of his collected editions in hardcover and am now considering moving this up the "buy' list. I'm running out of shelf space...again
Hey Chris. I read vol 2 of Witchfinder recently. To get myself in the mood I re-read the first Witchfinder and was even more impressed second time around! Vol 2 is good but it's certainly not great and doesn't live up to the firsts high standards. It reminds me of the two Baltimore books with the first being allot better.

This is one of my books to order for Nov. I've just received Baltimore omnibus vol 1 and 2 so I'm looking forward to reading them all. I loved the Hellboy main series but it did taper off about for me halfway through. I sensed that with re-reads I'll be more impressed.
If I’m anything to go by I was more impressed with darkness calls and so on after a 2nd read through. It certainly different in feel, has much more of a knightly quest feel that the pulpy adventures before it. I have read a bit of Baltimore but that is on my to do list fully.

I really liked volume one, but felt like volume two of Witchfinder was a bit bland. Edward grey is such an interesting character, i would be excited to see mignola’s own take on a witchfinder comic, since i feel like he does such a great job writing for Ed in the main hellboy series. I feel like volume 2 was a bit of a wasted opportunity as it felt like a lot of the stories existed to either set up more spinoffs, or specifically tie into existing canon. Volume 2 wasnt bad, but i was pretty disappointed with it
I love Hellboy and Baltimore but I passed on this when it first came out. I read some of the first story arc but the religious themes turned me off. Does religion continue on as a top-level matter in the other stories too, or does it just become more background to battle monsters and such?
After the first story arc the religious nature of Grey does get less and less, certainly he does not pray out loud as much in the 2nd and 3rd arc. I think that’s how it’s meant to be tbh, as his devotion changes as he gets deeper into the monster world.
Read Baltimore Omnibus Vol 1 of 2 bought both And must say What a great read Are in 150 pages in Vol 1 and so impressed by Story quality and art follow are Just so hard stop read Wait for food so have to but soon in book again a Real page Turner Just need be more talk about those Baltimore Books to good to not spread to more readers Vampire hunter in a Totalt unique way 👏👌👍🙏❤️🇪🇺🇸🇪

@@niclaslindman I agree about the absolutes, one maybe two volumes I would commit but there are too many so the cost is steep and there are som many other good ways to read it I will never go the absolute route with sandman. I have the deluxe editions and for the price they are excellent, obviously some minor issues but solid, oversized and readable, which I’m fine with. Hope you enjoyed the Ethernaut I loved it. And o have not got round to Valarian as yet but will hopefully jump on that too soon!

Witchfinder omnibus vol 1 blew me away.
