There's no explanation why he's no longer relevant to stories of the sun or moon, just that the collection of myths that got written down stop featuring him. 3. Compare this story with Orpheus and the Underworld or Sodom and Gomorrah. The main story features of each myth, of descending to a place where the protagonist is not meant to be, of seeking a prize but not being allowed to look upon it and looking upon it and having the prize ripped from you, they are all similar enough to imply that there is some older Ur-myth that was popular when the ancestors of these cultures still talked to each other and shared stories. It gives us a peek into what our culture might have been like before agriculture.
Silverhawk100: The time when the ancestors of these cultures still talked to each other probably isn't as long ago as you think. 4000 years ago, both Egypt and China were making bronze from tin imported from modern-day Afghanistan.
Perhaps. However given how we are talking about religious mythology and how some cultures kept their version of the story and others let theirs go (intentionally or not), I want to err on the side of caution and keep the number of cultures transmitting the story low. However, given that the Bronze Age is the oldest internationally cosmopolitan period that we know of for Mesopotamia, I can see an argument for "If it wasn't transmitted pre-Agriculture, then it was definitely done then." Especially since that by the time that story is written down (712 AD), it had acquired Confucio-Buddhist characteristics. Though that could easily be inserted propaganda given that one of the points of writing the Kojiki was to justify how the Emperor (who is descended from Izanagi) could be Buddhist.
Not before agriculture - all of these cultures are descendants of Eridu, the first city (ironically, when you spoke of an "Ur-myth", well, Eridu founded Ur). Before agriculture, we did not care about such things as "what day of the week is it?" nor keep a calendar, but agriculture relies on keeping precise track of planting and harvest times. The invention of time, as we know it today, was an invention of farmers. And how were the days of the week named by the ancient denizens of Eridu? They named each day of the week after the things in the sky that were not constant - what the Greeks called the Wanderers, or "planetes". The ancients knew of 7 such "planets": Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and the Sun and the Moon. Thus in ancient Eridu the first day of the week was Moon Day, then Mars Day, etc., and though English replaced the names of the "planets" with the names of their folk gods a few of them still retain the ancient Eridu naming conventions: Saturday is Saturn's Day, Sunday the Sun's Day, and Monday the Moon's Day. It was the same throughout the ancient world, wherever the armies of ancient Eridu spread their people they influenced the later languages that would come - the Romans and Greeks also had Moon Days and Sun's Day in their respective languages. Just about the only culture on Earth that doesn't follow this pattern is China, but it is likely that agriculture began separately in China at the same time that Eridu was being founded. And thus we come full circle to Japan - the Japanese follow the same naming principles as the ancient city of Eridu, with the name for the first day of the week being "Moon Day", and so on. This indicates that Japan is likely founded not by colonists from China, but by wandering peoples with origins closer to the Middle East. This myth further cements that idea - the trinity system of deities also comes from Eridu, and was passed on to their descendants. The three Eridu dieties each rules their own sphere, and those spheres were the Land, the Sea, and the Sky. Thus Greek mythology has Zeus, Hades, and Posiedon, and Japanese mythology has Susa-no-oh, Amaterasu, and Tsukuyomi-no-mikoto as the chief three (though by the time the mythology of Eridu made it to Japan, it had become a bit muddled - sometimes Tsukuyomi acts as the god of the Sea, sometimes the god of the night and death, sometimes simply as the Moon he rules only over the tides. Meanwhile Amaterasu's is both the skies as the sun Goddess but also the Earth as she makes living things grow and thrive and is known for venturing into the underworld herself, and Susano-oh is similar to Zeus both in his ruleship over storms and lightning as well as his tendency to get into misadventures with mortal women).
The descent into the land of the dead appears to be an Ur-myth, as it is present in many cultures. Orpheus and Eurydice is the closest parallel in Greek mythology, although as you mention the Persephone myth has many analogues as well. In Norse mythos, Hermod descends into Helheim looking for Baldur after his death, although the outcome is different. In Christian mythology the concept of "don't look back" (seen in both Izanagi and Orpheus myths) is seen in the story of Lot's wife. Humanity draws its tales from the same well. It's but one of the reasons we should have more empathy for our fellow human, regardless of where they are born.
Yeah its interesting how many cultures have many stories that developed more or less individualy yet share eerily similar plots and lessons. Take flood stories for example. there are many stories about a great flood in many different myologies from places all around the world.

Isn’t that first part just to Greek mythology stories mashed together. Hades kidnaps Persephone and she can only go back to the mortal world in one condition, and also when Orpheus couldn’t look back at his wife when they were returning to the surface, but he did/ when Psyche gets taken to a palace but cannot look at her husband Eros when he’s sleeping and he got mega angry when she did
The slapstick bit was so abrupt and strikingly jarring from the horror atmosphere leading up to this moment that I felt too confused to laugh. And I love corny jokes.
The two mythologies have asurprising amount in common. Though Izanami got a worse death than Eurydice, she would go on to be queen of the underworld, much like Persephone.

Japan's Mythology is a lot like Greek/Roman. Where there's still connections to China in the foundation. (With Izanami and Izanagi more than likely the children of the Chinese Pantheon.) Though in some versions its not that Izanami ate food that sealed her in the land of the dead (Like Persephone in Greek) Rather she had to talk to the Gods of the Land of the Dead. (She was a resident not the ruler at the time. Much in the same way that all the Gods and Goddesses that she had with Izanagi have been replaced by Gods that came exclusively from Izanagi.) But yeah. Much fun to be had! Also I love these! Thank you guys for doing it!

'Slapstick Time' is hilarious! Do more of that crazy, random music and events!!! 😋
There is nothing that can’t be improved by yakaty sax.
Literally finished Persona 4 last night and I was curious on the story of Izanami and Izanagi
2:44 NANI?!?!
I know he was distraught at losing his wife, but still, murdering his own child?! Yeesh!
Tsukuyomi: TSOO koo YOH mee
Susanoo: SOO sah noh (with the last syllable lengthened)
Susanowo
@Joseph Parkes I was thinking more along the lines of Hawai'i, but yeah.
Okay. So about that music.
*WHY. WHY IS IT SO BEAUTIFUL.*
Red looks so disturbing, the way you drew her. Other than that great video, love your channel.
They look like vampires.
They look a little like elementals, imo. Very ice/fire, snug in the uncanny valley.
They look they demonic albinos
Immediately thought of Naruto after reading that title lol.
I only clicked on this because of that
Clicked it because of Persona 4
For me it was because of Persona 4.
For me was Persona >.>
I was looking for this
It was...SLAP STICK TIIIIIIME!!!
THE BENYHILL MUS- Wait...how...ugh. The literal river of p**s and peaches?! Geez
Cool! Red and Blue look so weird in this style but cool nonetheless. Well done!
I guess Kagu-Tsuchi was
too hot to handle
He really lights up my life.
lack toes intolerant Izagani- im dying-
PUN CITY!!!
Sky Fantasy World what? I'm just getting warmed up!
Yeah he burn his mom hooha so....
3:06 - 4:16 I couldn’t stop laughing for the past few minutes, that was WAY too hilarious yet confusing for me to handle 🤣
Izanagi and Izanami at 0:30 is possibly the cutest visual I've ever seen on this channel. It's so sweet!
This is why I love mythology. It’s so weird sometimes. And that chase scene was beautiful. Absolutely beautiful
That’s so weird I wrote an essay on these two just a few weeks ago!
Did you add the fact about who he pissed a literal river?
Eating food from the underworld makes you stay, he can't look at his wife in order for her to leave...hmm...why does this sound so familiar?
The two mythologies have asurprising amount in common. Though Izanami got a worse death than Eurydice, she would go on to be queen of the underworld, much like Persephone.
I guess is a common theme in myths about the underworld, once you got there you should never go out again.
Extra Credits and Overly Sarcastic Productions!?
Best crossover ever!
Gotta love the loop I keep getting myself into as I was just watching Overly Sacrastic Productions: Jorogumo. Just found this channel recently too, and holy moly Extra Credits got some great stuff!
Even Japanese mythology *had* to be weird. And that is why I love it.
Every mythology is weird, that's why I love it so much
Really if you read any Mythology. They are all weird. I mean did you not watch anything of the Greek Mythology??? Heck, even Norse?? Stay away from Ireland though. It gets even stranger and tragic too...
So, Zeus turning into a swan to seduce a human woman is perfectly normal and not weird then? All mythology is weird bro, this isn't a "lol! japan so wacky!" thing.
@@fireaza It was a compliment. I fucking love it.
Not weird still weird for me(pls not weeb)@@fireaza
I really like the idea of the Shikome looking at the peaches and just being like "Well shit... peaches. Guess I lose."
If death was unknown what did he need a sword for?
Cutting bamboo?
to cut dem peaches of course
I spent hours looping between the Jorogumo from Overly Sarcastic Productions and this video.
I love the variations on the theme song. Wish I could find it somewhere, but oh well. Keep up the good work!
Who else came here from overly sarcastic productions????
Well I did so........HELL YEAH!!
Red and blue do not good in the extra credits style they look like creepy albinos or ghosts
ME!!!
3:06 My favorite part.
Gotta love Japanese mythology. Now, I'm gonna hold out hope for Sun Wukong, (and the interesting contrast between his Chinese and Japanese depictions) but I'll enjoy this until then.
Given the cross-channel effort, check out OSP's Journey to the West videos. Not yet done (as in, they're in the middle of the journey, and I imagine Red has one more video to cover the remaining notable shenanigans the insta-preggo river, the Bull Demon King and the Red Boy (aka Kougaiji. Yes, Saiyuki fans, THAT Kougaiji), and some more I don't remember that wasn't already covered, before she covers the ending.
everyone's mad for Overly Sarcastic Productions' Journey to the West series. (me included, mind you)
Ack, help. I just binged the entire Journey To The West series in one go and now will proceed to binge the rest of their content and subscribe/ding that bell but I WANT MOOOORE
Reds sun wukong is too much fun. Yep, check that out. Its till the laote teasures and the demon brothers so far.
i found here on youtube a subtitled version of a live action TV series of Journey to the West... worth a look... (its an earlier version i think, but its one i sort of like)
This is my favorite episode of extra ANYTHING, EVER.
Naruto fans hit like
Kaguya is my mom
@@devpatel3559 Brother!!!!
@@thebuttedemonslayer The entire Uchiha clan is made related to Shinto mythology. But the myths are thousands of years older than your fantasy jutsu.
What about p4 fans?
Two *Master* Channels Co-operate ?
What's Happening ? :o
Whatever it is, it's glorious
I was just listening while cleaning and I heard them and was like 'wait is that Red and Blue?!'
Yes! My favorite story tellers have come togather!
“Good-good peaches”
I love that
I don’t really like any other myth videos but yours. I literally watch them over and over and over. Yours just have something about them that keep me I interested. I think it’s the enthusiasm. Keep making these please!!!!
I'M HYPED FOR THIS COLLABORATION
Small Brain: huhu rEmiNdS mE NArUtO
Cosmic Brain: Persona 4 prepared me for this
Agreed
For sure
that's offensive
Anime seems less weird when you learn about Shinto mythology.
Seeing Red and Blue pop up near the end and seeing them in the Extra Credits style was such a shocking crossover to me for some reason for some reason my brain completely assumed this was impossible for some reason
Love you guys here at Extra Credit and Blue and Red at Overly Sarcastic Productions! Thanks for all the good mythological and historical content!
I watched my cousin play Persona 4 and got curious. And this popped out on my recommendations, didn't disappoint.
3:22 of course
3:40 yeah i mean for sure
3:56 the master tactician he is
4:12 i mean yeah those are some great peaches
So like when are they gonna be Izanagi and Izanami no Ookamis?
When you use the Orb of Truth at the end of phase one
@@raghavbhasin1165end it with myriad truths
And now I know why Naruto is so complicated
Extra History and Overly Sarcastic Productions together. So cool!
Thx btw. When this vid first came out I discovered one of my favorite channels since then
This was a very strange episode, even for mythology
i feel like most mythology started off as bedtime stories when the parents/grandparents just got high and spouted off whatever came to mind.
Great use of the Benny Hill theme!
OMG!!!!! How did I miss this beautiful cross over 😍
I’m loving it! The videos just get better and better
0:45 Or as Izanagi would say, he's a little...
"Too *hot* to handle. He really *warms* the heart. Really *lights up* my life. He's positively *radiant* ."
(Izanami: "Izanagi, I'm dying.")
"What? But I'm just *warming up* !"
(Izanami: "Izanagi!")
"Whoa, come on, where's the *fire* ?"
I can see you have good taste in videos 👌😁.
"Wait a moment, where did you get that peach?"
"Somebody threw it at you earlier".
Went back and paused at 4:15 for the demon waving the white flag over the peaches and have been laughing for six straight minutes. Good peaches.
I loved the red and blue featured.
I love these videos. Your narration is so comical and attention getting
Came bc of red and blues cameo, stayed for the production value and content. +1 sub. Keep up the good work.
Oh, OSP covered this story too. They left out the peeing and fruit though...
That moment u click on this vid because Izanagi is a sharingan technique forbidden in Naruto.
Edit: now he has amaterasu Susanoo and TSUKOYOMI?!?!! Nani
He would be the most powerful character in naruto lol
Lol facts
Ahh now it makes sense why Amaterasu and tsukyome are related to the eyes on the uchihia clan
Anime is just mythology fanfic.
This explains every golden era Anime I ever saw in the 80's & 90's, ever.
