There is no specific number of helpers he has. They are all called Pete (Piet) and in the In modern variant they have different tasks, like Music Pete, Navigator Pete, etc. and they arrive with a boat.

Fun story. As a DND Game Master, I always hold a Christmas themed game, usually trying to build around less known or more weird Christmas traditions. A couple of years ago, the idea was simple: the players will be Subkraampi, a race I created as a "Lesser Krampus", and their goal was to cause mischief and havoc in a city. They had one night to do so.
Long story short, the characters realised that religion is the biggest mischief you can ever do, so they founded the Church of Kramplikan, with the Krampope leading the church.
I am a proud member of the Kramplikan since that.

The Tió is the log; they have those in Catalonia and Aragon and yes, they treat them for days like they are guest - they cover him with a blanket and leave food for it.
Then the night of the 24 the children go and ... beat it with rods or walking sticks, singing a song that basically says "Caga tió" - "Shit, Tió!"
And then when they rise next day, surprise, the Tió shitted sweets and candy, lets share them.
And you want to know what is even weirder?
      ...
It is not the only shit-related Christmas tradition there.
There is the custom of, in the middle of your "belén", your nativity scene, have a "caganer". A figure of somebody squatting to shit.
It is so popular than now there are "novelty" caganers, with famous figures of the news or the arts or sport.

He rings a bell and threatens to stuff the children in a sack and take them to hell if they’ve not been good this year. As if that wasn’t enough psychological torture, he also encourages the children to sing and recite poems for him, one of which goes “Bertik, Bertik, what’s in your sack?”

Belsnickel is not the same character as Krampus. Belsnickel is from the Palatinate, which is also the region of origin of most of the Pennsylvania Dutch (and mine too btw). Belsnickel looks more man and less goat-like than Krampus. His name comes from how we pronounce the word "Pelz" (fur) and the name Nicholas. In Nothern Germany there is another similar character called "Knecht Ruprecht", who unlike Krampus and Belsnickel, isn't a demon at all, just an evil man.

  • @SasuKrow
    @SasuKrow 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

The Krampus creatures remind me so much of a tradition in my own country.
In Bulgaria somewhere around the end of Winter there are people called "Kukeri" who dress in furs and wear big intricate masks with horns and fangs portraying animals or monsters. And, guess what, they also wear GIANT BELLS. Sound familiar, eh? Their scary attire and the noise the giant bells make are supposedly used to scare away the evil spirits of winter (in similar fashion of how scary halloween costumes ward of spirits). They go on parades, dance, jump and play out scenes (agrarian/fertility related if I'm not mistaken). It's most probably an ancient pagan tradition and the same thing can be seen throughout the Balkans and I've heard about similar traditions in other parts of Europe too. The Krampus parades in central Europe are quite similar I suppose. I think scary wintery monsters like the Krampus and in the ones the Kukeri portray definitely have some ancient common roots. Just goes to show how far back the origin of this myth probably goes.

In Czechia and Slovakia, we have a slightly more friendly version of Krampus called "Čert". He's the kind of devil that may appear on a cartoon character's shoulder, and he's usually accompanied by an angel (as well as Saint Nick of course). He doesn't whip kids, but usually just gives them coal (or smears it on their face). Čerts (plural) are commonplace in Czech folklore, and they often appear in fairytales just like fairies or giants, usually as servants or pawns of satan.

They freed the Krampus from the tree he was sealed in by santa, Nick's father, kris' grandfather. The order of things had been long since broken, before the kids were getting coal, and with Kris ' lack of care, presents like the good ones.
Krampus beat Kris to death with his switch and the head of the teddy bear department was elected the new Santa. Christmas was saved. I mean, bad kids are being beat with a switch again but the nice list will be much better next year.

:0 the Belschnickel! I always heard he was the German Santa Claus, and every new December I would go to a nearby furnace and see the Belschnickel. It's always fun, and the time period they base it from is the late 1800's.

I've never heard of Belsnickel, but that tapping on the window pane had brought up flashbacks to those snowy nights I tried staying up (just to prove to myself I can). Each of those 3 nights, I heard it about 2:15-2:20; and each of those nights, I was too terrified to see if it was a branch from the tree too far away from the window to be making the noise. Especially to the upper half of the window...

I always thought of Krampus as more of an Austrian thing, with the counterpart up here being Knecht Ruprecht, whos like an attendant of either St. Nicholas or Baby Jesus himself (In Baden-Würtemberg) Pretty much the same options of either whips or savory treats apply tho. Despize what you might think from the similar language, the Austrians very much mind the distinction and like making fun of us, much like the attitude the Scots have toward the English. If I'm not mistaken we even went to war with them sometime in the 19th. century.🤔
IDK about Bavaria its like the Texas of Germany.
