    Great tutorial.I think you can use the B&W layer with the Blending Mode set to Color or Saturation which will give you the same luminosity representation as the color fill.

    Very Good! I use curves. But this one is faster. Thanks

    Nick! Came here after your recommendation during the live show yesterday. Great technique. I have been learning frequency separation, and it seems that I do a kind of dodge and burn when using a brush on the low frequency layer. I am constantly looking over the face to see the skin hue and luminosity I want to paint with. I will pick up a darker color or a lighter color based on how I want to "sculpt" the face. I also got out my Xbox 360 and Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and am playing the non-campaign small-map single-person games on easy and low sensitivity to practice on my shooting panning. I have to get to the point where I pan TO the target instead of panning PAST the target.

    Hi Nick i am a great fan of your all your work and videos - your patient and well reasoned explanations are clear and make a difficult topic easy to understand . Is this now your preferred method to dodge & burn over using curves ?

    Thanks for the tutorial! Very helpful. With curves I use masks. Why not masks for this method?

    • @NoahDanteSmyth

      The reason you usually wouldn't use a mask is because the great thing about this method is being able to quickly switch between dodge and burn with just the X key to switch the color if the brush, white for dodge black for burn. I used to use this method when I was new to dodge and burn and I would frequently switch between them. Although i suppose if you wanted to dodge and burn the traditional masking way with the softlight effect, you could make solid color layers, one black and one white, set it to soft light then mask it. Doing so would effectively double the precision in which you could paint since having only 50% grey and lightening and darkening from there only leaves 49 points of opacity where a solid color masked would have a full 100 points of opacity. If you wanted to be even more accurate that would definitely be the way to go.

    Nicely covered but I see a bit of grey introduced when the local dodge is done , perhaps a bit of colour correction would have helped here too ........just a suggestion.

    Thanks for this! Is there a difference between adjusting opacity and flow? I notice you adjust flow down and not opacity. Just wonder why. Thanks so much!

    • @NoahDanteSmyth
      @NoahDanteSmyth  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Flow can be built upon in a single stroke just by back tracking, opacity has to be seperate brush strokes repeatedly over an area. I'll do a video on it soon! Hope that answers your question for now!

      Nick Smyth that helps a lot. Thanks. Do you use a tablet to edit? I'm using an intuos pro with pen pressure sensitivity so was just curious if you're also using pen pressure as well as manually adjusting flow. Thanks, nick!
