    The Nano Metal Muff from EHX is a Fuzz or Distortion pedal that includes a noise gate and in the new nano sized enclosure so it will actually fit on your pedal board! In this video i play a selection of guitars in the demo to find out what kind of effect pedal this really is! My review is at the end of the video.

    The word "Muff" in the name of the pedal implies some relation with the Big Muff family. I thinks it's a metal distortion that can make fuzzy sounds.

  • @Screwhead
    @Screwhead 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I think it's both as well, and I think the EQ affects what characteristics come through the most. I think if you'd have had the bass up around 2 -3 o'clock, the highs at 3-4, and scooped the mids out slightly, it might have come out a bit more like a fuzz. I really felt like it was starting to fuzz out when you maxed the high and bass.

    I've bought the original - with silver knobs - in 2006 or 2007. I agree with your statement : you don't care if it sounds good because this pedal makes you feel so good riffing. Even with a basic Marshall solid state amp - sadly not so much with a tube amp, but I guess that's what it takes to become older.

    I have the previous version (the Micro, which would be the mid-sized one) and if someone says that that is a fuzz pedal either they don't know what fuzz is or haven't even listened to the pedal, because it is a full blown distortion and a damn good one at that.

      @@clinteastwood6875 side by side with other high gain distortions it has a looser feel leaning more to fuzz. Wouldn’t use this for articulate palm muting, more half-muted noisy chugs. Lots of low end on tap which you usually wouldn’t get with the more modern proggy stuff. The other guitarist in my band uses one of the old ones (has the top boost but he doesn’t touch it) so I’m well aware of what it sounds like in direct comparison to your typical metal distortion.

    Crushing video. I think it is both fuzz and distortion. Depending on what pickups and or amplifier and its settings and whether or not the amp is clean or dirty and whether or not its tube or solid state and whether the pedals before or after it is buffered the scale will swing one way or the other and it may even swing toward the jar of angry bees. The Metal Muff Nano is a fuzzstortion 😊

    Defo a distortion, a filthy, thrashy, 'old school' brilliant one. Really shined on the low tuned stuff u did with the Chapman and the baritone, a bit too bright on the SG but still fun. NOT a fuzz in any sense, kinda reminds of a cranked Rat! Brilliant video as always, full of positivity and pure fun, cheers!

  • @danstoneguitar8249
    @danstoneguitar8249 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It really boils down to the topology. A fuzz in a traditional sense is a discrete overloaded feedback amplifier. Distortion typically does not use discrete technology, but integrated circuits - such as the HM-2, yet people often refer to the HM-2 as a fuzz. The big muff is discrete technology but utilizes soft clipping which from a technical standpoint puts the big muff in the ball park of an overdrive circuit. The reason I would say the nano metal muff is not a fuzz: from a non-technical point of view - the way a note decays and pulls apart is not present like it would be in a traditional fuzz design.

  • @conorfowler
    @conorfowler 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Krüshing!!!! Definitely a distortion to my ears. I know the Black Russian specifically says 'Distortion' on it, and the modern Green Russian says 'Overdrive', so I think EHX is having an identity crisis. Would love to hear this against a RAT and maybe a Boss metal pedal for comparison!

  • @IAmKillEveryone

    I own the big box version of the MM. Absolutely love it. If you've got a good tube amp to run it through, you can get everything from slight dirty OD, to fuzz, to metal. One of the most tweakable pedals I have.

    • @ithemba
      @ithemba ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have the old big box as well and really enjoy it as well, because it gives you all the 'ugly' kind of distortion with hairs on its teeth as well as a 3 band EQ - however its easy to dial in shitty tones as well. Also, the top boost as roughly 10% of usable width of the poti. In this range its glorious, but everything above 9 - 10 o clock really is only usable for lo-fi broken black metal kind of sounds.
      However, compared to the lengths people go through combining pedals (ie fuzzes) and trying to give their hi gain amps some kind of flavour, this thing can do a hell of a lot for the price and gets way more usable tones out of it than just cramming a big muff into your driven amp.

    i wonder if it's a fuzz with a compression circuit in front to tighten it up. Running an OD or compressor in front of a fuzz, can tighten up the sound and allow for palm mute clarity when playing faster riffs, but you retain the very aggressive clipping of the fuzz.

    This was quite the tone journey, Andy. Certainly changed my opinion on the Metal Muff!
    As far as metal pedals are concerned, I think nothing trumps the Friedman BE-OD right now. It is at the top of the giant heap of pedals that claim to do the high gain metal distortion thing. You should definitely give that a shot. But apart from that, there is also the Diezel VH4(?) Preamp pedal that is HUGE both in size and in tone.

    The original (big) one with the boost was a great pedal so this was always going to be amazing! I can do without the boost: love the gate: love the size. Gonna have to buy this :D

    You were getting some crushing tone out of the EHX Metal Muff Nano when you turned up the gain!

    Been playing through a metal muff since they came out....I do not play metal. You can hear it on any live songs on my channel. Leave tone knobs low, follow with an EQ...gotta have the EQ for MOST situations, IMO. I took it to a boutique store and tried it against several other pedals recently...you name it, if it is a common store stocker...nothing else worked right. I bought a $350 pedal online, returned it for another $350 one...sent it back too...sorry, nope. Got a fancy analog programmable EQ instead. The old Muff (I don't use the top boost, but at about 8 o'clock it does have a nice sound...makes it less metal, imo) is supposed to be the same circuit...so I'm ordering one...cheap, works...and now has a gate? Yes. Not restrictive or nasal...just gotta deal with the ice pick w/EQ. Distortion and Fuzz are terms guitarists made up that are immaterial to me. High gain w/lot of bass will 'fuzz' it. Low gain not so nice, but med-high gain with a low level p/u into a clean warm tube amp is pure rock and roll...for me. I boost it with a mojo mojo when I need metalish sounds...seems to control the ice pick a bit with a boost...used several boosts over the years. Mojo mojo does not sound good to me...except into the Metal Muff. COMPARE IT TO AN EMPRESS HEAVY...AND NOT ONLY METAL SOUNDS...PLEASE :o)

    I just ordered a nano muff. also ordered the EHX Hot Tubes OD pedal....so I can stack them. from everything I've read about stacking is putting the fuzz at the front end and the OD last. My experience tho is just the opposite. I'm really curious to see how the Nano Muff will stack with the Hot Tubes. if it doesnt I'm still getting 2 great pedals and I can always use the Hot Tubes with my Rams Head....or my Big Muff....or my Rat....or my 3 Series Fuzz.....or my Hammertone Octive Fuzz.....or.....or....😊

    Electric violinist, here...I have a standard Muff Pi Nano, but thinking about the Metal Muff specifically for the gate (bow stops = distortion stops). Great video! Might make this an easy swap for me.

    Good pedal but sounds bad through a solid state amp.have a fender 100w solid state.love the mxr fullbore metal. boost and tone it with a tubescreamer and sounds amazing,add my CFH crybaby and that's all Ive ever needed for metal and thrash.love your vids,you shred!!

    Is it a fuzz or a distortion 🤔? ..... it's a MUFF so it can be whatever we want it to be lol
    Nice fun demo.
    Sounds like you may have some metal songs waiting to come out of you 👍🏻

    this can be either a distortion or a fuzz depending on the mids, if they’re scooped it resembles a fuzz, but if its 12 or higher, it sounds more like a distortion.

    Man, your review is awesome. You transmitted the fun properly. I had the big metal muff for 10 years aprox and recently sold It to taste a Proco rat clon (with the classic chip on It) and definitely preffer the metal muff (I loose control with the rat on volume and, for me, It's not a fuzz nor distortion, something in between). Recently I bhought the Tone tattoo from Electroharmonix because, in theory It has the delay, the chorus and the distortion at the same time (in theory, the nano metal muff). At the moment I am satisfied BUT, don't know actually if is exactly the same amount of distortion as the big metal muff or the nano. Would be very nice a video comparing the 3 pedals (because It doesn't exist in TH-cam at the moment). But if you casually know the answer I would be glad to hear your opinion. Thanks for your video

    i'll be looking for this on reverb now. but i dont know if i've ever witnessed anyone enjoying a putting out a review. sounds to me like a CRUSHING distortion pedal. I think you should check out some pedals from Fuzz Imp. he makes some cool stuff too.

    you know what would be really crushing? Make another video of this pedal boosted with a Tube Screamer at the front (Max Level Max Tone Zero Drive). DO IT!!!! I mean, KRVSH IT!!!!!

    A lot of people hate this pedal ! I personally I like it quite a bit. it’s not a fuzz but it gets into this very sludgy territory when you boost the mids and cut the treble somewhat. I like it for leads and even to boost a guitar with low output pickups like single coils to sound gnarly. Don’t know it just works for me. It is sometimes difficult to control but a very nice box for experimentation.
