Headphones are the only way to really hear the distinct differences!!!!!
Comparing the Rickenbacker 325V63 VS 325C64....But just using my 1996 as a substitute!
Both were played through my 1965 Vox AC100.
FORGOT to mention my string choice. Both guitars were using the same Thomastik .012 changed around the same time about 8 months ago with virtually no play time.
ALSO yes I do wish I tested each pickup by moving the switch, but kinda forgot and realized it too late lol.
But every time I played it, that switch needs to be down for the best most crisp Beatle sounds.

The black one sounded more like I remember if I closed my eyes as I listened. Especially the 'I feel Fine' intro.
Wow, that 1996 model is the wet dream of every CCR/John Fogerty fan
The red is what I’d pick, perfect jangle and clarity. But I bet the black would slice through a mix really well with the more pronounced mids. Great stuff, have a nice weekend! ✌️
I own a '96 325v63 with hot toasters. I prefer that guitar over all. These are also better suited for distortion and overdrive and other modern effects. These maintain clarity in the notes which is why I love these pups so much.
Remember, anyone can change the middle screws to flatheads on the v63s, so measure the output with a multimeter. Don't go based on looks alone.
The hot toasters have a rounder sound and have more punch without the brittle character of the other hi gains Ric makes.
Thank you for your response to my question about the difference between the mod. 325 and my mod. 320!
I prefer the black because the vocals could sit better in the mix… also, a lead guitar can do what it does best, which is lead lol :) I’m definitely using this video as a reference! Great job!
I thought I’d prefer the c64, but I liked that v63. I hope to get one someday, but as a lefty, I’ll have to take what I can find 😂
I somehow found a 4001v63PMC back in 2009
I do love the way the V’s sound too! Both have that beatlish sound.
The black one sounds smoother and is preferred. Can't remember which one has the lower gains.
THe red one.
The black Ric sounds more like the Beatles to me. Was that one with the lower output pickups? Great comparison.
Thank you! And no! The black one had the high-gains.
I'm with you; I definitely prefer the vintage style low gain PU!
Finally. An example of what a 325 sounds like, might sound like and should sound like. Good work bro.
There is no comparing the two. Lennon's guitar quacked and was a bit muddy. Like the black one you’re playing. If it had the pickups with more high end, the Beatles would have had quite a different sound.
Thank you! And agree 👍
Black all the way
No question the black on has the right sound. Nice job!
The lower gain ones are janglier, thus sound the best to me.
The pickups are completely differents....
Love the video!
Thank you!!
My old ears can hear any difference. 🇺🇸👍🙋♂️🖖🏻
I like both but if I had to choose I’d probably go with the pups in the fireglo
The black guitar sounds perfect a very vintage style
The "circle" thing is no universal rule with toasters in general: Carl Wilson Signature 360s have pickups with no circles which are pretty low-output (ie 5.75kOhms neck, 5.71kOhms bridge).
Nice!!
Thanks!
1996 has much better clarity and closer to an 60’s Rick. Not sure if an AC100 is the best choice to emulate early Beatles. A ‘63 Top boost AC30 is the sound most associated with Beatles tone to me. Although it was the AC100 that She’s a Woman and I Feel Fine we’re recorded and played live on..
Tough to tell! I know all of Beatles For Sale and Help was all AC100, plus lots more after and in-between. But I really was going to use the AC30 first since it’s a more relatable amp.
I have a rick mod 320 that I bought in 1980 can you tell me what the difference is between the 325 and the 320. Mine doesn't have the toaster p/u's, is that the only difference between the two guitars? Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Yup you got it! Tiny things here and there of course, but overall your body shape is spot on to the 325 “V” Series
Then there's John Fogerty, who modified his Fireglo 325 to feature a Gibson humbucker as the bridge pickup. That's your intro lick to "Green River".
And It does sound amazing!
@@guitargearconnection I doubt anyone today would rout and drill a $4,000 325 for a PAF and Bigsby B5!
Apparently Fogerty screwed with his 325's wiring too. I can guess he was seeking hum cancel once the Gibson was in place.
I have a 1989 325v59, I wonder how much an EQ pedal could accomplish in dialing in the tone to get it in line with a C series guitar.
Hey Brian!
With today’s technology, I bet you would be able to get the exact tone with pedals/boards. I also have seen some guys unwrap their pickup, which isn’t hard!
@@guitargearconnection Thanks Paul! My folks will be visiting Japan in the Fall and bring my 325, once that happens, I'll have to give it a try 😁
I needed this, I bought two 620’s and intend to add toasters to one of them.
I play punk and country, I need to find lo gains for one of my 620’s…
@@WillyRaschke Ric makes and sells them on their accessories page. There's also a guy out of the U.K making each decade's iteration
@@roughcutguitars The Creamery.
The 620 is a great all around guitar, my '02 has been my #1 since I got it. Are you on the Rickresource forum by any chance?
Red one is too jangly for me. Prefer the black which I am pretty sure if the vintage one. Right?
Yup! The black one is the V series. It definitely sounds great!
V series is killer for both vintage and modern tone. My profile pic is not that Ric, it's a modded 320. I am getting back my exact 325v63 that I sold 9 years ago because I love that guitar to death. It's very versatile. It can do anything you want, you just gotta dial it in like anything else.
@@joellebrodeur1015 Sometimes you don't know what you've got till it's gone. But getting it back, that is sweet.
Funny how the V (presumably for 'vintage' is a misnomer since the C series actually has the value of the early 60s ones and you definitely hear John's tone in em here.
The 1996 definitely sounds more jangley than the 325
Agree! Love the lower gain pickups
Both guitars with flatwounds strings right? Which one ?
Both have .012 Thomastik flats
PPP loan 5:24 😊
1996 for me.
Seems like many of the “sweeter frequencies” low outputs would be lost in a mix anyways
Very true!
