    Scatterwounds, by a mile. They have a sweeter tone with more "shimmer".

    Having played Ricks for 30+ years -- and owning a '58, '60, '65, 68, '87, a recent 1993+, and a Rose Morris 1997 reissue from right before the scatterwound era -- what you call the "hot toaster" is my favorite Rickenbacker pickup. Caveat -- only one of those is a 12 string, and it has scatterwounds. It's lovely. For a 6, though, it's not close for me.

    I think the scatter wounds sound a little “acoustic” - a bit more resonant with some nice string separation. They’re also brighter without being too trebly

    Thank you so very much for the excellent excellent information.
    I have the vintage scatteround pickups in my 1979 Rickenbacker 325. I love them they sound amazing. I bought my 1979 Rickenbacker in January 1981. It came with 3 Hi Gains pickups. In 2012, I had replaced the Hi gains to vintage scatteround toaster top pickups, along with the accent vibrato tailpiece and the KK knobs. I gave the guitar another 33 years of playing life to it. I had bought the guitar used. It was already road worn in, who ever had it before me didn’t give it the love and affection that I have given the guitar, even though I didn’t play the guitar for 23 years. It’s been my baby since 2012 when I had alot work done to it. I modified it to look exactly like Lennon’s 1964 Rickenbacker 325. The Rickenbacker 325 I always wanted. I remember how excited I was when I bought it in 1981. I was super excited when it was modified in 2012.
    Love your videos- especially the 1964 Rickenbacker 325 video. Love the sound of your toaster tops in the guitar.
    Are they scatteround pups or the hot toaster pups in the guitar? They sound great through your Vox AC-30 TB.
    Hope to see you do videos on your Vox AC-30 TB and Fender amps.

      @@sampopkin I've never owned any "hot toasters," but I've had various windings of Hi-Gains, HB-1s, and two different toasters over the years. Right now, my main Ric (a 620) has toasters from The Creamery, namely their "Mid-'63" set, which clocks in about 7.4k at the neck and 8.7k at the bridge, and sounds great. Still, I've been wondering what a set with slightly higher winding would sound like. I was hoping to like these "hot toasters" better here. I'm playing 6-strings, though, so not a direct comparison.
      Thanks so much for doing this comparison! Would also be interesting to see some stock Hi-Gains compared in a 12-string.

    I have a 360/12V64 that had the hotter pickups. What I did was unwind the pickups to 7.4k ohms which is what the 60s specs were . I also added a .0047 uf tone cap in the treble circuit. It sounds killer.

    • @sampopkin

      I should try the tone cap replacement! Nice to hear you had good results with the under-winding thing

  • @davidkieltyka9
    @davidkieltyka9 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’ve owned a few vintage Rickies, and the pickup winding does vary. My fav set are in a model 450 from 1959: neck at ~6.5KOhms; bridge at ~9KOhms with a low-cut capacitor giving it more jangle. The neck & bridge outputs at full volume are well balanced compared to most Rics.

    • @sampopkin
      @sampopkin  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s super interesting. I’ve googled a lot about vintage rick windings and it’s nice to hear real life numbers. They seemed to be all over the place output wise?

    • @davidkieltyka9
      @davidkieltyka9 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sampopkin The vintage toaster pickups I’ve had have been in the 7-7.5K range aside from the 450. But I’ve heard & read from Ric owner/collector folks that there are plenty of outliers, especially in the 1950s.

  • @PeterPug
    @PeterPug 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I wonder if the Flat-wounds accentuate the difference more? I still have rounds on my V64 and its a very bright guitar when the two pickups are used together.

    • @sampopkin
      @sampopkin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great point. I think either way you'd hear a difference but rounds would probably work best with hot toasters, and flats with scatterwound. You should check out my video I did on flats vs rounds with the scatterwounds. Thanks!
