What Does Tesla Do With Old Batteries?

  • Cars as we know them have been around since the early 1900s, but for over a century we have been burning fossil fuels at an alarming, almost careless, rate. Only in the past decade have we seen the electric vehicle market really taking off.
However, all EVs draw power from large battery packs placed deep beneath the car, hundreds of times the size of your latest smartphone’s battery. Have you ever wondered what happens to them once the car reaches retirement age?
A ban on petrol and diesel cars is fast approaching for many of us, meaning electric cars are becoming a much more common sight on our roads.
What happens to tesla batteries once they go bad?

There is a company with a environmentally friendly process to recycle Lithium Ion batteries. The process recovers close to all of the valuable cathode material ready to go right back in a battery manufacturers front door. The large battery manufacture's are well aware of this company.
Tesla has likely know of the company for several years but as it is with all large companies decisions are made at a snails pace. I'm thinking Tesla is and will continue to be slow to properly recycle its batteries. Tesla has never been a company about the environment, as usual it's all about the money.
I believe the company's process will soon come to the market place but as to which company will pull the trigger first, that is the billion dollar question.

i don't think you know this. But the guy just owns the company, and he memorizes a script to make himself sound smart. I am sure he is decent at coding but he is definitely not the one behind most of teslas and his other companies' ideas. Search up JB Straubel patents, that guy and most likely some other people probably came up with most of the teslas slightly more innovative designs(judging by his patents). Elon musk is more of a mascot, his awkward personality appeals to most losers and makes people who don't pity him, great marketing tactic. But you shouldn't put the person on a pedestal, cause in reality he isn't all that smart, probably the dumbest person working in all of his companies.

Car companies are not involved in the recycling of the vehicles they manufacture. Never have been. The EPA can require that manufacturers make products out of materials that are recyclable, and Tesla is doing that. Battery recycling is already happening, although Tesla's batteries are lasting a lot longer than anyone predicted. There are many Teslas on the road today with more than 250K miles on them and still using the original battery.

Yes, unless these batteries are recycled, there is nothing renewable about them. It's no different form fossil fuel, its another none renewable materials. When we run out we run out. Plus, the battery dumps are highly toxic to the environment. Same thing with those electricity generating "flowers" aka wind turbines, each blade is 10+ tones of fiberglass and epoxy. Which after 10-20 years go into landfills. Sadly, so far all these products are only great for making money, not the environment.

Also, if they prevent the use of these fossil fuel cars after this date, they will be reducing the freedoms of their people. They will also reduce the gas-station industry as well since most people won’t need to charge their car there unless traveling. In the EU there exists a producer responsibility to make sure their products are recycled.
This is the producer or importers responsibility and concerns Chemicals, Plastics, cardboard, paper AND BATTERIES.
    It works like this...
There are companies that work with recycling, in the case of batteries the importer/producer declare amount and type of batteries sold each month and pay an amount/Kg and type then the recycling association takes care of the rest (collection and recycling) so it is already going on.
In the case of EV batteries they are mostly being stored at the moment and will be so for 2-3 years while building up recycling capacity for this kind of batteries.
There is the possibility for giving EV batteries a "second life" as storage for another 10+ years before recycling but the volume of batteries has to go up quite a bit before this industry get going.

Can't recycle gas or oil without very convoluted means. EV's may seem expensive at first glance, but they easily make up for it in lower maintenance and long lifespans. And unlike gas cars, which have stagnated in terms of efficiency, EV's see big advancements every couple months. Only thing gas cars have going for them is the huge preexisting infrastructure to support them.

Tesla do recycle, and of course they will in the future. Because its the right ting to do, and the economic of it ensure it to be a sustainable buissiness .. We should not worry about batteries at the end of veichle life. They all are used as a kind of stationary storage.. just look at the crazy prizes..and they will last decades. And when they are done, cost of metal inside will ensure recycling 👍🇳🇴
What we should worry about is the waste gasses and particular matter from the ice veichles during their 10-20 year life...how in the world could that be cleaned up and reused??

by 2030, we will be short of raw material used for lithium ion battery and we again have to think hard for new ways of running automobile... then hydrogen cell will be talked.... then something else....
are we in a viscous circle of uncertainty for future ... or it's a big scam all together....

At solar and wind producing less than 5% of our Electric Power where are you going to get all that Electric Power to charge a complete Electric fleet. We can't produce enough now at Peak Summer times? It's going to take far better Battery Tecknolegy & far more Electric Production to be Viable.

Yes, if I decided to save my money and purchase another car, and I won't, but if I did I would use a company that recycled their batteries.
Although, the truth behind powering the future is actually Green Hydrogen power,
so I would buy one of those simply because Green Hydrogen is the future of all transport systems on earth.
With 33 million cubic miles of water at our disposal it is absolutely the fuel that will outlast all other fuels,
unless we somehow devise a means of running our transport and heating systems on air, without depleting the air supply of course.
When we devise a mass system that takes power from the air then I will go with that, but it's perhaps a little too early for revealing this possibility yet.
    Kind regards
    LM

I don't see, AT ALL, how using electric cars is reducing pollution. I mean, if you aren't burning the fuel on the car, you are probably burning it at thermal plants to feed the power grid. Renewables can't support the power grid even of small countries, so coal and petroleum derivatives are still used quite a lot.
While yes, you can certainly use renewable energy with electric cars, which you can't with petroleum based cars, I don't think that it's sustainable if everyone started to use electric cars.

I like how "everyone knows" that ICE engines will never be better than they are (I. E. they are discarding possible advances in the future) and the same people praise EV cars for what the batteries will/may be in the future (I. E. praise is based on predictions and promises that may not happen)

What a nonsens Question. Old batteries are raw material. Instead of digging it out again it should be made economically to reuse the materials. Companies work on maximal profit.Recycle companies cost money to build. As long governments don't push the car producer they always go the easiest way.

  • @Geargrinderc15

There is no such thing as 100 percent clean and renewable. Windmills for instance use a massive amount of fossils fuels to produce, ship and install.
Not to mention the blades are and have to be replaced filling landfills with massive amounts of fiberglass.
The turbines also need to be replaced and or rebuilt.
I'm all for alternatives to fossil fuels. But I hate misleading and bias information.

Silly title. Why would the vendor have to take care of the crap of the buyer? Other car manufacturers also dont cleanup for their customers. Anyway, Tesla has no recycle initiative yet, because almost all of their cars are stil running. And there are commercial recycle companies starting up when enough cars reach the EOL.

Now, Where do people think the energy comes from? Solar pannels require glass, coal, and quartz, all materials mined. Most power plants also run on fossil fuels or biomas (grinding up trees) to make it. this produces much more pollution on the environment, and will hurt it much more. Also, people are going to think that they shouldnt buy the already made gas cars, meaning all the steel and alluminum and other metals, aswell as all the electrionics and things, are going to be wasted, and rot. Also, teslas arent somehow going to save the world, as they require the same amount of steel and alluminum, but with even more electronics that require rare earth metals. The myth of teslas saving climate change and such unfortunately just isnt true.

Of course everyone agrees with what you tell .... but you forget that, in fact, everyone forgets .... how is the car's batteries filled ... so how is electricity generated ...? Every form of energy that enters (gasoline, sun or any other energy) pollutes nature to the same extent as your electric car spends ....

How do you just undo a chemical bond? You don't, sooo I would like to see the science behind this. This sounds fishy. Because the bond is degraded over a period of time, it literally dies, hence why you need new batteries. Just thinking out loud here.

  • @franciscoshi1968

Everyone is so concerned about EV batteries going to landfill. As it is now it is so difficult to get used EV batteries that you pay over half the price of a new battery for a second hand one. They are being repurposed for energy storage to the point that recycling plants can't get enough to operate unless they refuse to give you back the old battery.
